Last season, Motin played 34 AHL games and 14 ECHL games. If we use just games played at level, we can get a very good view of where Motin ranks in the organizational depth chart.
- Ryan Whitney
- Tom Gilbert
- Ladislav Smid
- Cam Barker
- Theo Peckham
- Andy Sutton
- Jeff Petry (35 NHL, 41 AHL)
- Taylor Chorney (12 NHL, 46 AHL)
- Alex Plante (3 NHL, 73 AHL)
- Corey Potter (1 NHL, 75 AHL)
- Colton Teubert (59 AHL)
- Johan Motin (34 AHL, 14 ECHL)
Vying for pro employment will be people like Taylor Fedun, Martin Marincin. You've got AHL veterans signed for the sole purpose of taking a roster spot in Okla City (Bryan Helmer). Plus you have the waiver wire that could bring someone in. The Oilers are extremely close to the 50-man limit. There are a lot of pressures on that number this fall, including:
- Junior players who could turn pro like Brandon Davidson and Ryan Martindale.
- The possibility that Colin Fraser gets returned.
- RNH could play well enough to turn pro, as could Marincin.
The Oilers will keep 7 defensemen and could lose Chorney via waivers, but one suspects they'll keep him and send Petry down. If that happens, the OKC farm club would have Petry, Helmer, Plante, Potter, Teubert and Motin before we get to the new pro's: Fedun, Marincin, Davidson.
Motin was in tough a year ago to make the Barons and it looks the same this season. Stay-at-home types sometimes take time to develop and you'd hope the Oilers would keep him all three entry level seasons in order to make sure they know what he can offer them. However, the numbers game suggests Motin is a strong candidate to be sent away. Training camp is going to be very important for Johan Motin.

Motin remains a long-shot
ReplyDeleteIn other news, Scott Howson continues his trend giving lengthy contracts at favourable terms for the players, such that there is little room for overperformance of the contract.
The possibility that Colin Fraser gets returned.
ReplyDeleteGiven where LA's cap is and that they still haven't signed their golden boy, the odds of that happening are very slim.
I'd give you 8-1 and feel pretty good about my bet.
I think it's possible Bettman returns Fraser to the Oilers and rewards the Kings with a draft pick instead.
ReplyDeletePossible, but I think WG has nailed the unlikeliness.
ReplyDeleteI think LT is suggesting that Bettman returns Fraser to the Oilers and awards them a pick instead.Smyth and his cap hit isn't involved in the ruling.
ReplyDeleteI can easily see Bettman returning Fraser in return for a pick.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing that Fraser goes on the injury list so his salary does not count against the cap...but his contract would and that creates more issues for the Oilers vis a vis RNH, Marincin.
It also would not surprise me (although I hope I'm wrong) if Whitney is not ready to start and Petry is in the Oiler lineup on opening night.

ReplyDeleteIf we are playing the 'I think LT' game again, I am going with "I think LT wishes that he were a bottle of coke"
That link didn't work bookie-something about linking photos without permission-Diane Lane chugging a bottle of coke?ScarJo?Inquiring minds want to know.

ReplyDeleteWell, he is a product of the Oilers school of GMing.
Why does everyone keep wondering if Chorney gets claimed on waivers? Surprising thing is lots of guys asking the question. Sometimes conventional wisdom is not conventional
ReplyDeleteIs there anyone that needs someone after a couple of years out of junior/college who could not crack the 10/11 Oiler D?
Like I posted here, I think Motin is too much a defenseman because of being pushed too soon into pro hockey in Sweden.
ReplyDeleteInstead of having a legit junior league(ie. CHL) to mould talents, the best prospects end up in the Eliteseries playing against pros. My impression is that they learn first how "not to screw up" and "defense first" instead of dominating opponents and scoring lots.
The AHL experience for him has been a re-training of sorts on hockey basics.
He will be a solid d-man, but still not likely this year.
Bah, that's disappointing - it worked for me because I had already opened it on my computer, but it doesn't work otherwise.
ReplyDeleteHere is the link
Yes, its Diane Lane chugging a bottle of Coke...
