Rookie Camp Roster

Anton Lander will be one of the featured players for the Oilers rookies at this year's camp. The roster is up on the Oilers website and damned if it isn't impressive again.

Despite losing Hall, Paajarvi, Eberle, Omark and a bunch of others from the cast of prospects, the reload didn't take long.

It's real and it's spectacular.
  • GOAL: Olivier Roy, Tyler Bunz, Adam Brown
  • DEFENSE: Colten Teubert, Taylor Fedun, Martin Marincin, Jeremie Blain, Brandon Davidson, David Musil, Martin Gernat, Ryan Lowery, Tyler Schmidt, Wes Vannieuwenhuizen
  • CENTER: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Anton Lander, Milan Kytnar, Ryan Martindale, Travis Ewanyk, Chase Schaber, Colin Smith
  • LEFT WING: Curtis Hamilton, Antti Tyrvainen, Phil Cornet, Drew Czerwonka, Tobias Rieder, Brett Ferguson
  • RIGHT WING: Tyler Pitlick, Kristians Pelss, Toni Rajala, Cameron Abney
There's plenty to look forward to here. These are the 6 guys I'll focus on:
  1. RNH: This is going to be an interesting 8 weeks for the kid. It's going to be fun to watch him.
  2. Lander: How good IS he? How much has his skating improved? Man, he could be key.
  3. Musil: I have a feeling Musil is going to move up the depth chart in the next 12 months.
  4. Hamilton: Is he a tweener or the real deal?
  5. Rajala: What do the Oilers have here?
  6. Pitlick: Is he healthy? Any good?
Can't wait.

  1. LT-I'll give you a few minutes to change that photo to Teri Hatcher:)

  2. Think you're right about Musil LT.

I've listened to a couple of interviews with Don Hay and he advises that Musil has more offence than he was able to show in Vancouver.

The Giants used him in a purely shut down role last season but in 09/10, he put up 7G 25A 32P and was +33.

He may be topping your defensive prospect list fairly soon.

  3. Speaking of tweeners, I'll be interested in watching Rajala in addition to Hamilton.

Chase Schaber is an interesting addition. The former Kamloops Blazers captain has had some decent seasons and it looks like most of them were cut short by injury. Makes you wonder about whether if some guys could stay healthy (the Whitney effect?).

  4. Watching Martindale should be interesting, his stats and size are very compelling, but the red flags in his scouting profile kind of jump off the page. Maybe that lack of an entry level deal hanging over him will be enough of a fire under his ass?

  5. If Vannieuwenhuizen makes the NHL, will he have the longest name in NHL history? Nugent-Hopkins is 2 characters less. Who has/had the longest name?

  6. Re: Musil's offence - I seem to recall interviews with Musil right after the draft where he was told by Giant's coaching staff that he was going to be used in a more defensive role this past season, so he knew his offense would suffer in his draft year, but still bought in.

In my fantasy world, Lander-Pitlick-Hamilton become the Oiler's version of the Grind Line in about 4 years time. Size, speed, 2-way play.

  7. 3 questions

    1) I thought Pells signed a deal to play in the KHL or the Latvian pro league or something, no?

    2) Where is the other Finn? I thought the Oilers signed two?

    3) Anybody else hear Derek Laxdall coach of the Oil Kings describe Martin Gernat as a "Griffin Reinhart clone"? They will be d partners to start the year. Considering Reinhart is projected to be a top 5 overall pick this year and that Gernat is only a few months older, maybe #35 overall ranking by Stu was low!

  8. Chase Schaber? I could have sworn I heard he signed somewhere this summer? I guess I was way off.

  9. On a semi-related note, if anyone is in Jasper on Sept. 10th the Oil Kings and Prince George Cougars are playing an exhibition game to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the arena there.

Good chance to see a bunch of Oilers prospects close up.

  10. oilersfan: C&B had an item on Pelss recently, he did have a tryout over there but will return to Edmonton.

The other Finn is quite older,so won't be a part of the rookie camp (his name is Petrell).

Oilers organization appears giddy about Gernat. I've spoken to one person with good hockey knowledge who said he looked very good.

  11. The lack of 2-way prospects on the right side could be a very significant issue moving forwards. This list really highlights the weakness of the right-hand side of the forwards.

I'm curious to know if there is as big of a balance gap at the lower levels of the organization as there is at the pro level. Does anyone know the breakdown of the defensemen prospects (L or R)?

  12. That's an interesting fantasy Clay. I'd think bigger though man.

My fantasy world involves a bottle of scotch, some cigars, a turtle pool filled with jello, Caroline Dhavernas, Molly Parker and Amy Adams.

  13. Funny you mention Amy Adams. I'm old enough to be her grandfather but she's quite an attractive girl.

  14. Am I the only one excited to see what the Feisty Finn brings to the table??

I can't remember the last time the Oilers had an actual agitator.

They desperately need to become tougher to play against and I'm hoping Antii is part of that solution.

    Besides, he's Finnnish

  15. I love the fact that this blog prompts me to google Caroline Dhavernas and Molly Parker first thing in the morning.

BD seems to like them earthy (i.e natural and approachable). I prefer statuesque and unattainable!

With that in mind, feel free to google Adriana Lima or Brooklyn Decker if you've not already done so today.

  16. Hey, apparently the Oilers aren't the only canadian team to have a recently aquired star arrested for being intoxicated

Maybe they would like to trade for Khabbibulin so he can provide a good role model for how to behave after getting arrested for commiting such a selfish and dangerous crime?

  17. Not sure if its been mentioned or not 'round these parts, but Pitlick hasn't even attended the MH Tigers camp.

I assume that means he's written into the OKC lineup in ink rather than pencil.

  18. @victor....the longest NHL name ever might just be Pierre-Luc-Letourneau-Lebond, who has spent time with the New Jersey Devils.

  19. It used to be Sheldon Kannegeisser, who at one time was paired with Darryl Edestrand on the Pens blue.

  20. LT - my old man is pushing 80 and he still finds the young women attractive. I think it never goes away.

Lee - I googled my wife last night, it was terrific fun, but I'm doubting your claim that you googled both of those lovely young ladies this morning.

  21. I haven't heard/seen the name Sheldon Kannegeiser in forever.

I remember growing up and reading a book by Brad Park about the NYR's of the late 60's/early 70's. The equipment mgr comes up to Pete Stemkowski and comments that his last name goes all the way across the jersey. Stemmer tells him he's filed papers to change his name and shortern it...to Joe Stemkowski.

  22. Jordan: I do not think that "star player" means what you (and Steve Tambellini) think it means.

  23. I think we have an answer for Zimbardo, who pioneered the study of enforcer culture. He's made quite a name for himself stirring the pot.

Philip Zimbardo: The demise of guys?

Dr. Jennifer Melfi: Do you have any qualms about how you actually make a living?

Tony Soprano: Yeah. I find I have to be the sad clown: laughing on the outside, crying on the inside.

The reason we all loved Tony is that he's the only banker who shows remorse.

  24. @ S.S.

I don't think I've ever been so insulted. I've been compared to a lot of people in my day, but to suggest taht I might have the same understanding of what makes an impact hockey player as someone who has been working inhockey operations for a decade and is currently one of only 30 people to be imployed managing a multi-million dollar sports franchise...

You know, that's not that insulting. Actually, that's quite the complement. Thank you.

Just for $#!*s and giggles though, what's your definition of star player?

  25. Lee - I googled my wife last night, it was terrific fun, but I'm doubting your claim that you googled both of those lovely young ladies this morning.

Lee sounds like a ladies man.

If you gave him your wife's name and a bit of her personal information, I bet he would google your wife too.

  26. Just for $#!*s and giggles though, what's your definition of star player?

Potter Stewart. But whatever it is, Khabibulin isn't included in it.

  27. On Byfuglien, from the Winnipeg Free Press: "When he was booked, Byfuglien was weighed and he came in at 286 pounds. He played at approximately 245 pounds last year."

The probably says almost as much about the accuracy of measurements in media guides as it does about his off-season conditioning, but it doesn't really make me want to give up Sam Gagner for him.

(For comparison, TSN has Zdeno Chara at 255 pounds. 286 is a hell of a lot of weight.)

  28. @BD - good point. I'm going with Ron Zacapa XO, this place, Linda Fiorentino, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Paz Vega.

  29. That's it Clay, dream big buddy, dream big.

That's why I never think of the Oilers winning a Cup, its six or seven in a row. Why the hell not?

  30. Alright BD, I'm in... my fantasy world involves a secluded rustic cottage in the dead of winter with a large fireplace and shepskin rug, Captain Morgan Private Stock, a case of Dom Perignon Champagne, Freida Pinto, Keira Knightley and Jessica Alba.
