Trade Winds

We're going to see these rumors until the Oilers sign Hemsky to another contract or trade him. The Blue Jackets are on a mission to save Scott Howson's job (I'm hoping Howson stays 25 years and wins 5 Stanley's in Columbus, and with every win dedicates the victory to his biggest supporter: Doug MacLean), and what with a skilled winger down (Huselius) many helpful people are making suggestions.

Howson no doubt has fond memories of 83 from his time in Our Town watching the sublime winger. The Oilers might listen to an offer that features and overpay which brings us to the major problem marrying these two teams to a deal: The Jackets don't have a lot to offer.

Howson dealt this year's first round pick in the deal for Jeff Carter, and he dealt 2007's first rounder (Voracek) in the same trade. Ryan Johansen would certainly qualify as full value, but the Jackets aren't going to trade a franchise center for one year of Hemsky.

The Oilers could deal for young defenseman John Moore, a fleet defender sometimes compared to Jordan Leopold and probably a couple of years away from helping. The Oilers may also have interest in the Jackets 2013 1st rd pick because it could be a good one (despite improvements the Jackets have some problems in goal and on the blueline, or so it seems).

The Oilers sleep from mid-July through end August, so I don't think anything will happen. In fact I know it. Will not happen. No chance.

My opinion is that the Oilers should work extremely hard to sign the man. Since drafting him ten years ago, Ales Hemsky has been one of the few things we can count on over these (mostly) difficult seasons. It would be terrific to see him hang around long enough to enjoy the party.

  1. Trading Hemsky does not sound like a good idea.

Except for this one glorious summer they acquired this big tall dbag defender who could play. Cant remember his name ;)

Always a smart ass in the room I know.

Ryan Johansen or bust I say.

  3. Nobody is going to trade for Hemsky coming off of two injury plagued seasons.

Between Game 40 and the trade deadline, after Hemsky has demonstrated his health, is when the Hemskyites have to worry about a trade.

I'm back firmly on the fence, waiting to see if Nugent-Hopkins or Lander is one of those universal pegs.

I'd think Gagner has a better chance of being traded this summer than Hemsky.

  4. Would they take Gagner and Ana 2nd for Johansen? It helps them be a better team. Maybe 2013 Oilers 1st instead of the Anaheim pick?

I like Gagner and all, and Johansen is magic beans at this point, but he could be the big centre this team needs for their playoff runs in 2014+

  5. According to the Journal, Hemsky expects to be 100 percent in training camp and would like to stay in Edmonton long term.

“I don’t like change,” he said. “I’ve met lots of great people in Edmonton. I’ve got friends. I’ve got a girlfriend living with me. I can’t complain.”

Christ, if that's the situation WTF is Toonces dithering about? Throw out a 5 year at 4-4.5M per and see if he bites.

  6. Well if you're Columbus you want Hemsky over Gagner, right?

  7. Also that implies that Hemsky has an Edmontonian girlfriend.

All you Edmontonian ladies out there you know what you have to do. Take one for the team and lock up Hall, Eberle, Pajaarvi, Omark, and RHN post haste. Loxy et al, mobilize whatever forces you have, fire up the troops, and get them out there.

  8. The more I hear Hemsky say that he wants to stay here, the less I want him traded. Great player, although very injury prone. But I'll take that risk with the reward of what a good season can bring. Plus we have guys who can fill in when he gets hurt.

If he does get traded though, I hope it's for a more established young, all around D-man.

  9. Trade Omark and Gagner for their 2012 1st pick

  10. For sure Hemsky over Gagner.

Not sure Gagner is enough to excite Howson, so yeah probably just nonsensical.

  11. Hemsky as a second line winger is a talent most teams will not have for their second line. Why would we give that up? I suppose he could be replaced by Omark, but he's unproven. If Omark shows Hemsky-like abilities this year, perhaps then the team can consider its options.

  12. There were rumours that Tambi offered up Hemsky for Johansen at the deadline (or maybe I mentioned it so often it seems like there were)

Hemsky is likely to be more valuable at the deadline, and EDM is in no rush.

I agree with the consensus, at this point, Johansen or forget it.

  13. Trade Omark and Gagner for their 2012 1st pick

Huh? That is a massive overpay for pick that will likely be no higher than 10th. In 10 months you might be able to get a first rounder for each of them.

  14. There aren't 5 players in the league that have the puck on a sting like Hemsky. He can dangle with the very best. I'm a big fan and would be sad to see him go even if a healthy Crosby was the return. I'm not saying I wouldn't make that trade (I obviously would) but I'd still be sad.

Can we have one elite forward be drafted by the team and kept until retirement before Hall and Eb's please? If not the return had BETTER be and overpay.

From what I hear they don't need your urging.

When Hall and Ebs walk into a bar 1/2 the girls immediately fall on their back with their legs spread.

Oilers will re-sign 83 unless someonme overpays for him. CLB doesn't have the currency since they pulled Johansen off the table.

  16. For Hemsky I'd ask:

Johansen, Moore, Kubalik, a 1st and a 2nd. No less.

  17. Tracy Lane

    TreenasOil Tracy Lane

Oilers feel they have a roster that will compete for a playoff spot and will tweak it as the season goes.

I don't expect Brule to be a part of the Oilers moving forward. Once healthy he will be on waivers and sent down if no one picks him up.

  19. Fussy britches has a good track record, I think Brule's on his way to LTIR. The rest is just one side of the story (we don't know what the other team is offering) but I'm not surprised teams are calling about Omark or Hartikainen.

  20. Would anyone be willing to trade Hemsky for Bouwmeester?

    ReplyDelete
  21. fpb: I like the way you are thinking. If a team wants Hemsky or any of the other young or youngish talent, they have to pay and pay. Signing Hemsky for 4 years @ 5.5M then trading Omark for a very good defenseman and slotting Hartikanen to Omark's spot makes this team quite competitive going forward.

  22. I'd prefer to keep Hemsky now that we've fleshed out the bottom 6 and added a little balance to the
forward lines-but if a GM was willing to overpay I would move him.

The problem with moving him at the deadline is getting him there healthy and in one piece
    -unless we're trading with LA(rimshot)

They really need to make a decision before the season starts-there is no harm to listening to
offers over the summer, but they really to make a decision whether Hemsky is part of the future
    or not.

  23. I might even consider taking Huselius back in a deal to help our good friend Howson, but it'll cost you

    *insert evil laugh*

    ReplyDelete
  24. @hg10

Taking his salary back in a deal for Hemsky would give Howson an opportunity to pay dearly to complete the deal. And we could then move Huselius for a pick at the deadline.

  25. Isles have this guy listed as a UFA

    D JACK HILLEN 64 4 18 22 -5 45 0 0 1 81 4.9

never heard of him. -5 though but it is the Islanders. and we are the Oilers.

  26. Howson will win a cup - never mind 5 - in Columbus around the time I marry Angelina Jolie. Which is to say, around the First of Never.

  27. Please don't trade Hemsky....Please don't trade Hemsky.

I was talking with a buddy about the Jackets looking at Hemsky earlier today beacuse of the Huselius injury. Outside of Johansen+, I don't think there's anything there that's worth it.

It's interesting that Bikini Girl keeps telling us that teams are asking about Omark. Is it the Youtube effect, or are they watching him play? It's good to know he has some value, in any case.

    ReplyDelete
  28. To extend Hemsky, they would have to start at Horcoff's numbers no? And if so, where does it go from there?

Unless they're Slovakian...then they just politely decline to fraternize with Eberle and flash a shy smile.

Sign that man to a long-term extension. Right. Now.

When was the last time you heard a player of his quality say that?
