Hockey Canada released their world junior "Red" and "White" teams for the summer development camp early next month in Edmonton. Three Oilers are on the teams, including #1 overall pick Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, goaltender Tyler Bunz (quickly emerging as a quality prospect) and defender Dillon Simpson, Edmonton's 4th rd pick in the most recent entry draft.
The list is here.
No Hamilton?
ReplyDeleteVince: I don't think he's eligible, although it's an interesting question. He is still a teenager so technically might be able to (don't know what the cutoff time is).
ReplyDeleteCutoff date is December 31. Hamilton turns 20 earlier in December.
ReplyDeletei swear i saw this list at least a month ago.
ReplyDeleteGreat....maybe OKC this year for him?
ReplyDeleteVince: I think Hamilton will make it.
ReplyDeletefancy dan: Really? First I'd seen it. I wonder if Simpson's status on this list came out before the draft.
Bruce: Thanks.
oh, i think i saw this list:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.hockeycanada.ca/index.php/ci_id/170658/la_id/1.htm
which has now been pared down. great to see DS there.
fancy dan: It looks like the list was released June 17 BEFORE the draft.

Crazy.
I don't know if he's past the cutoff or not, but they really have a thing for not inviting Ryan Martindale don't they?
ReplyDeleteWow.
ReplyDelete10% of players from Edmonton and area (Duncan Siemens, Joe Morrow, Tyler Bunz, Dillon Simpson, and Mark Pysyk.)
Local development programs appear to be working...
I think Martindale is in the same boat as Hamilton. Not eligible on account of him turning 20 before December 31st (Oct 27).
ReplyDeletePlayed Baseball against Louis Domingue a couple of years ago.
ReplyDeleteGood guy, glad to see him up there.
The same deadline of December 31 applies across the board to junior, indeed minor hockey. As I understand it, any player born before 1991 December 31 would be considered a 20-year-old for the CHL and ineligible for the WJC. Whereas the deadline for the Entry Draft is Sept 15 for reasons we discussed in a recent thread. Thus every year the first-year draft class split about 70/30 between having two years of normal junior eligibility left, or just one.
ReplyDeleteOne of the unusual things about the 2010 draft was the Oilers chose a shitton of late '91 birthdays - Hall, Pitlick, Hamilton, Martindale, Davidson (who was in fact a second year eligible with a '91 August birthday). Thus all these guys are potentially graduating to the pro ranks for this upcoming season; either that, or they'll be overagers back in junior.
Whereas in the 2011 draft every single player picked by the Oil was born in '93, so there will be no such influx of "extra" players into the pros next year; indeed there will only be the other ~half of the 'class of 2010 - Blain, Bunz, Czerwonka, Pelss, (theoretically) Jones. Marincin is also a '92 birthday but with options. I wonder if Oilers will hold him back simply due to the numbers game.
Any word on other nations? Particularly interested in Klefbom and Perhonen.
ReplyDeleteIs Musil a Czech or a Canadian?
I assume Gernat will make it by default, given how thin the Slovaks are these days.
The most wonderful time of the year.
Also, has the Nuge stated that he'll be attending camp? Or will he be pulling a Taylor Hall and declaring NHL or bust?
ReplyDeleteFinal thought for the triple-post:
ReplyDeleteHow long will it take before the "Morrow v. Klefbom" debate is settled?
I'll admit, I was rooting for the local boy. That said, he may be better off getting away from the pressure of being the hometown hero. For every Pisani there's a Lupul or a Comrie (part 1, not the sequel).
Klefbom was not a part of the Sweden camp that will play exhibitions at Lake Placid, US. I haven't been able to track down why he wasn't included. USA blue, USA White and Finland will also participate in the tourney.
ReplyDeleteKlefbom was not a part of the Sweden camp that will play exhibitions at Lake Placid, US
ReplyDeleteNo kidding. That's unexpected.
Klefbom is not included in Svenska Ishockeyförbund's list but he is listed by Fox News to be attending... but we know better than to trust Rupert Murdoch's media machinery, right?!
ReplyDeleteNevertheless, this is a bit odd. Klefbom apparently missed the Oilers development camp in early July due to a scheduling conflict with his Swedish club Färjestad.
I've emailed a source here in Sweden to try and get to the bottom of his exclusion.
Wait, Murdoch owns Fox News? I learned something new today.
ReplyDeleteSo why isn't Keegan Lowe on the list, first rounder?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteKeegan Lowe drafted in the third round...He's American.
ReplyDeleteAccording to hockeydb, Keegan was born in Edmonton on March 29, 1993.
ReplyDeleteYea, he's listed as being born in about fifteen different places. He's played for US teams though.
ReplyDeleteImpressive roster. We are enjoying a real renaissance with Canadian hockey at the moment. Hockey Canada should be commended.
ReplyDeleteThe Jets farm team in St John's is going to be called the "Ice Caps".
ReplyDeleteNo word on how much input Tim Horton's had in the name selection.
Last year, Musil was selected for the Czech WJC team but was injured, and played for the Czech U18 team. My guess is he makes the Czech team again this year.
ReplyDeleteOn a list of 30 NHL GMs, where would people put Turner and Murdoch? I once mentioned my theory about life trajectory as adrenaline, perspiration, spittle. In the spittle department, the worst NHL GM barely holds a soggy candle to Rupert Murdoch.
ReplyDeleteI never heard much about the Oiler cheerleaders after the initial announcement. Hot or not? I think Murdoch would also install roller-girls in the beer canteen. Bad allegorical political cartoons would run on the J-lotron between periods, possibly as a cynical effort to drive more fans into the beer concession. (If you're worried about the video programming on the J-lotron between fights, you should be.) Somehow he'd find a way to circumvent ownership rules to buy three other franchises, with the runt of the litter engaged in dubious survival tactics. In homage to Harper, the official statistician would be replaced by the organist, who can do both jobs. This would have no bearing on his circumvention of the ownership rules.
Moral of the story: It's best not to mention Fox News. Mentioning Fox News in a serious discussion thread is like walking onto an airplane waving a box cutter.
Plus, according to the hockey code, we're supposed to yowl that our incumbent GM is the worst imaginable transgression against sanity, acumen, and virtue. A mere mention of Fox News takes all the fun out of the game.
Boy, there is some beef on that list. How about a shutdown pair of Gudbranson at 6'4" 211 lbs and Oleksiak at 6'7" 244 lbs? Ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteI see that TSN sat down one-on-one with Lombardi. Apparently they discussed Richards' partying and the Doughty talks. I didn't see it but was there anything about the Fraser-Smyth spat?
ReplyDelete"forkstr" as in put a "forkstr" in it, the trade is over.
No Mark MacNeill? Hmmm...
ReplyDeleteSomething that made me happy in a spiteful way was that Calgary has only 1 invitee on that list (no chance of making the team) and Vancouver has NONE.
Is anyone else thinking Simpson was invited because of his name?
ReplyDeleteBank Shot said...Is anyone else thinking Simpson was invited because of his name?
ReplyDeleteNope. You've scouted him I guess?
Nope. You've scouted him I guess?
ReplyDeleteSorry, Mrs Simpson, I'll explain the reasoning.
He's the only player at camp drafted later then the second round from the 2011 draft, and he's a college player.
Seems like a pretty odd choice for Hockey Canada as they usually stay away from college players, especially 18 year olds.
Promethian:
ReplyDeleteThe Canucks are in "win now" mode, so they aren't unhappy about not having some spot faced teenaged prospects.
In 5 years, once the Sedins are gone, then it kicks in as an issue why the Nucks won't have won a cup for 45+ years.
Flames are like Oilers were 10 years ago...desperately trying to remain "respectable".
You have to wonder what Flames fans make from all the crazy young talent Oilers are amassing.
Khabibulin news...No jail time now..
ReplyDeleteFrom ESPN ....
According to reports, a judge has moved Khabibulin into a work-release program that will allow the goaltender to leave the facility from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day. Prison officials told The Journal that as long as he follows the rules and doesn’t exhibit signs of having been drinking, Khabibulin will be allowed to spend his daytime hours as he pleases.
Link
ReplyDeleteI guess he does have to sleep there by the sounds of it.
ReplyDeleteNice, somebody should check that judge's bank acounts. Good to know that Khabi won't be inconvienienced or anything. It's not like anyone was ever hurt by drunk driving.
ReplyDeletebookje: Please, it's not like he hasn't suffered enough. He's also going to jail.
ReplyDeleteTake your extremism to a Murdoch media outlet, where it will be guaranteed full coverage.
book¡e, nice one.
ReplyDeleteIs there anyone that actually believes Khabi isn't done?
b.r.u.t.a.l.
Helene Elliott just tweeted:
ReplyDeleteColin Fraser, acquired by Kings in Smyth trade, had ankle surgery on unhealed fracture this week. Agent says not sure how long recovery
Hmmmmmmm
Ooops, more in follow up tweet from Helene Elliott:
ReplyDelete...recovery will take. Opened door for Kings to file grievance w/NHL
*insert dramatic organ music here*
He's also going to jail.
ReplyDeleteNo, he's going to "jail." MacTavish went to jail.
More from Helene Elliott:
ReplyDeleteKings have filed formal grievance over Fraser's fitness/injury.
And there you go.
well good for Lombardi. If you have the courage of your convictions then you follow through.
