Oilers Trade for Sutton

The Edmonton Oilers are adding size and truculence by the minute. Andy Sutton has been acquired from Anaheim in exchange for Kurtis Foster. There may be a pick involved, I'm still checking it out.

Like Cam Barker, acquired earlier in the day, Sutton is coming off a subpar performance in 11-12 (39gp, 0-4-4 +1 with 87pims) but at 6.06, 245 he's big, tough and mean. His secondary numbers imply a third pairing enforcer and a guy who can help out on the PK. I'll have a blog post up later today about what this means for the 11-12 roster, but the addition of Sutton and Barker cannot bode well for Taylor Chorney and Jeff Petry (likely OKC bound).

The Oilers are getting a major makeover.

  1. I like it...you can never have enough D...this should mean Stu has more bullets in the draft come trade deadline day this year...sutton should be worth a 3rd or 4th.

    ReplyDelete
  2. The Oilers get tougher yet slower. I thought they would have learned from last years defense.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Lieno with a monster contract. Too much money

    ReplyDelete
  4. @ Dangerman

I am not sure you can get slower than Foster. And Sutton is actually better at defense.
Now the Oilers are hoping Barker can be aPP QB taking over Foster's role.

    ReplyDelete
  5. well no one will push us around this year anyways. Slower yes, but vet players who know their roles and play with nastiness. So only a centreman left to go

    ReplyDelete
  6. Much better than Vandermeer and Strudwick. Again, we needed guys like Sutton and Barker, only I was hoping for better players

    ReplyDelete
  7. Petry does bode well...he only one of 2 RH Dmen on the Oilers team atm.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Sutton is a decent skater for his size.

Petry has nothing to worry about. He plays the starboard side.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Who's playing the right side on D??

Why give Barker that much money? Dumb

    ReplyDelete
  10. Do people realize that the cap went up?

Its still a slice of the pie, just a much larger pie.

  12. Well I'm not certain about all these deals (I need time to think, dammit!) but Foster was about as bad as anyone at defense since poor Igor Ulanov came from Montreal those years ago and wore his ass for a hat for a few weeks after the deadline.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Sutton's a #4. A legit #4. Competent, but dirty as hell. Headshots every which way.

    ReplyDelete
  14. TSN saying trade NOT done yet. Here we go again...

    ReplyDelete
  15. we all wanted actual nhl players to fill out the roster, and tambo is doing just that. Belanger takes the cake. not a perfect day if it happens, but it makes us a better grittier team. And so far only eager is on anything more then 1 yr deals which gives us options at the deadline.

    ReplyDelete
  16. foster had to go. I like the trade overall if there is apick its gravy

    ReplyDelete
  17. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? The trade's not done? Holy hell, Tambellini.

    ReplyDelete
  18. It turns out Foster has dengue fever and cannot be traded.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Sutton isn't a legit #4 anymore than Foster was.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Stocking up on Beef..

    Haha.. Compensating for RNH much!..

(I like that Hordichuk is encouraged to protect the young'ns when on the phone w TSN..)

  21. Your 7 d-men are now:

    Whitney
    Gilbert
    Smid
    Barker
    Petry
    Sutton
    Peckham

I don't see Petry going down, but having one of Petry or Peckham not play regularly makes no sense. My guess is that Gilbert is on the block.

  22. I'm looking at gabe's numbers at behind the net and I can't get top 4 pairing out of Sutton's numbers.

Like the player, but he's not the #4 guy we're looking for today.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Jason Arnott would be the ultimate Cherry on the cake...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Send Foster to Anaheim. Any limbs, etc. he may be missing can go out on next flight.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Sutton however is a legit bottom pairing guy, adds meanness and size and can PK. And he's an improvement on Foster. Sign Vandermeer and Belanger and let's start the damn season.

Well, considering the Oilers have sent all their cannons away in the last 24 hours....Arnott would fill a lot of nees in one body.

  28. I will pee rainbow Skittles if we sign Arnott.

  30. lt: I think they'll pair barker with Whitney, and have the all nasty peckham and sutton slow 3rd pairing.

    ReplyDelete
  31. and the picks may be from us to anaheim to dump foster's salary

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oilers will get a lot of practice shorthanded this year.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Gagner and Gilbert for Mike Green per Treenas

    Oil mulling it over

    ReplyDelete
  34. V3.01. Doing things. About time.

Anyone else notice how the new Oilers are Renney-type players?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Had a chance to watch Sutton for 3 games in the Anaheim/Nashville series. He was pretty brutal.

Only way he's top 4 is if he's playing in the AHL.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think Barker is the guy that will get moved to the right side. Smid doesn't have the head for it and Peckham is too slow for it. Barker has some mobility, at least better than Peckham and Sutton.

    ReplyDelete
  37. spOILer: Yeah, agreed. I don't think we should look at this addition as anything but positive.

The big issue now is that some of the kids aren't going to be here. A quick depth chart:

    1. Whitney
    2. Gilbert
    3. Smid
    4. Peckham
    5. Barker
    6. Sutton

That's how I see it, anyway. Petry on the farm.

    ReplyDelete
  38. LT, I would put petry over Peckham. I think Peckham becomes #7 guy which is good

    ReplyDelete
  39. Green is supposed to be available. We would finally have some shots from the point.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Gagner and Gilbert for Mike Green per Treenas

Whoa. You know what....Green shoots right.. but so does Gilbert.

But a Whitney/Green top pairing would be something nice.

    ReplyDelete
  41. i hope the gilbert/gagner deal is just a rumour. that would not be good in my view

    ReplyDelete
  42. Wonder if Bikini girl is Bob Stauffer

Now where did I hear that before?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Punjabi sez: "Wonder if Bikini girl is Bob Stauffer"

That is a really bad visual. Really, really bad.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Mike Green career high 31 goals

Sam Gagner career high 16 goals

What a steal that would be. I don't believe it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Make it Cogs and Gilbert + prospects/picks for Green and I'm all for it.

Gagner's still got upside, we shouldn't sell him low.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Does anyone know if Green is healthy? He ended the season on a concussion, didn't he?

    ReplyDelete
  47. I can't find that Mike Green rumor on bikini girl's site. What time did it hit?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Rishaug now watching bra and panties. Can't blame him. Giguere to COL? He's gonna love playing in the same div as Smytty.

    ReplyDelete
  49. This trade was reported, right?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hopefully Vancouver's going out and getting a tough guy, because I'm coming after them. Calgary, too. It's payback time.

Wow, Hordichuk sounds a bit pissed.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Souray to Stars.

Potulny gets a two-way/one-way 2 year deal with Wash.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Gagner's arrows are not pointing downwards, his secondary numbers hint of improvement this year.

If you want a face-off artist and a defensive center, you're not going to get that, but he's still a solid player.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Finally some other team will be dealing with Souray's injuries.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hordichuk was pretty uncermoniously dumped by Vancouver. Don't blame him for being pissed.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Green - he's an RFA after this year, 1 year away from becoming a UFA. He's making 5M/year.

You better be convinced you can extend him, otherwise you give up two good pieces in Gagner and Gilbert.

I'd try to push Gilbert + Lander + Hamilton

    ReplyDelete
  56. Tencer: Belanger and Arnott talking to the Oilers.

If the Oilers were to add Arnott, Eager, Hordichuk, Sutton and Barker on one day, can we finally stop talking about the need for "team toughness"?

Also, did Brian Burke take over for 3.1 today?

    ReplyDelete
  57. "If you want a face-off artist and a defensive center, you're not going to get that, but he's still a solid player."

You just answered your own statement. The minute that RNH was revealed as an Oiler, the clock started ticking on Young Sam. Can't have two of those types of centers rolling on the team.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I don't buy the meme about too much losing when the kids look around the room and clearly see a better future. Many tracks in life are all about sucking it up on the crest of greatness.

What I do see as a risk is losing the *same way* year after year. This teaches the kids nothing, and impairs their capacity to adapt to shifting circumstance, which every championship team must learn how to do.

With the D line up as it appears to be shaping up, the kids are going to learn some harsh lessons about becoming too preoccupied with one end of the ice. On the other hand, they won't be losing the same way, which is at least a small sop to someday salvation.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Speaking of Brian Burke, did someone forget to tell him what day it was?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Mark-Ryan: We could if Arnott would use his size and hit something.

Nicest guy in the world, but like the old expression goes, if he went into a corner with eggs in his pocket, they wouldn't get broken.

    ReplyDelete
  61. still a long way to go but Oilers are incrementally better and at a low cost and risk

Barker is a gamble but who gives a shit if he doesn't work out? One year and this is it for him. Last chance Texaco. Maybe he's Cleary or maybe he's Pouliot but we'll see.

Eager and Hordichuk are better than SMac and Jacques, Sutton helps a bit.

    Need that centre though.

    ReplyDelete
  62. "I'd try to push Gilbert + Lander + Hamilton"

No way in Jebus I would do that. you would rather move a two-way center and a two-way winger, noth of whom are stronger than Young Sam.

Give 'em Gagner and be done with it.

Green being a UFA is an issue, but I might want to make sure he would sign here long-term before I pull that trigger. They could start negotiating with him now if they wanted to.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Sorry if this gets posted twice.

@ Mark-Ryan: Arnott has hit anything in years. He's a great guy in person, but the complaint on him is he does not use his size.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Burke is in Iran. Nonis is the leafs rep today

    ReplyDelete
  65. Which is why I think Gagner will be a RW within a year.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I love Andy Sutton. Shot blocking machine.

I kind of hope he can mold Peckham to his style.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I dont like the Green rumour..

Although Green is a (fringe) All Star, if he is on the block Washington is passing on him.. they must not believe they can win big with him in the mix.. is this the play we wont to bring in?!..

Maybe.. He would provide some high end skill, but i dunno..

    ReplyDelete
  76. I see that LT has changed the original post; now that the Sutton trade may not happen, this will get deleted @ 3.

In which case, I'd like to admit that I'm chuffed to bits that we've signed Brad Richards to a $1M per year, 10 year contract, and that the Stanley is now 99% guaranteed.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Now the bikini is saying Belanger is close to signing here.

    ReplyDelete
  78. TreenasOil - Belanger close to signing with the Oilers

    ReplyDelete
  79. I seriously doubt that the Green rumours are true, but even as a believer in Gagner's long-term potential (I think he's going to be a 70-80 point player). And I think Gilbert is a legitimate, quality top-four defenseman. But if you can get an elite talent on the blue-line, especially a player that's going to have a massive impact on the powerplay, you do it. They've got some guys who may be several years away, but man... Mike Green? I don't care. Add in Hemsky. Throw in a second round pick. Give them Cogliano too if they like. Just get it done if Washington is even considering moving him.

    That said... I don't think it's happening.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Yes Petry> Peckham

    If you check out C&B
Petry was one of the few Oilers to come outpositive in scoring chance differential while Peckham was absolutely destroyed.
So if there was 1 spot ot hand out my vote goes to Petry. Peckham can play as a 7th D man.

    ReplyDelete
  87. This is the most bewildering day I've had as an Oiler fan. That's saying a lot.

Addressed toughness, addressed C, may or may not have some of the best wing depth in the league (I would argue we currently have a legit #1 LW and RW, #2 LW and RW and #3 LW and RW).

Still some shakey legs on D and a big question in goal, but damn.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I actually have a ton of beer, and wine. Long weekend. God I wish i was 20.

    ReplyDelete
  89. $1.75 per for 3 years for belanger. solid

    ReplyDelete
  90. $1.75M x 3 years for Belanger, per Dreger. Not bad at all.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Any idea who/what this Garfield is that bikini gal keeps referencing?

    ReplyDelete
  92. I hate Sutton. I will actively boo him.

Great day to be a fan of winning games though. Get Arnott!!!

    ReplyDelete
  93. Belanger had 40 points and won 55% of his draws last year, BTW.

He's probably on Horcoff's plain as a hockey player right now.

1.75 per. 3 years. For a guy who just dissed Winnipeg.

    3.1 did good.

    ReplyDelete
  94. "beauty...3 years 1.75 per"

Good numbers. The depth chart has an interesting look now. Belanger will be Horcoff backup.

    ReplyDelete
  95. better terms than i was expecting, nice signing.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Now if they only had a competent veteran goaltender....

    ReplyDelete
  97. Agreed on 20, LT... And here in Cochrane the altitude adds to the hangovers... I may have to move.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I'd be happier if Belanger had Arnott's size. Still, IIRC, he's great at the dot.

Andrew Cogliano's tenure as an Oiler is in great jeopardy.

    ReplyDelete
  99. regarding petry vs peckham

Petry was one of the few Oilers to come out on top in scoring chance differential while Peckham got demolished.
As a better skater and possibly a better defenseman Petry gets the nod from me over Peckham esp now that we have Sutton in the mix.

    ReplyDelete
  100. The C position is getting more crowded, not sure if its better but definitely more crowded.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Unbelievably, Vokoun is still available. Wonder who's still in the goalie market? Washington on a short term basis maybe. CBJ just signed Sanford.

    ReplyDelete
