Some late morning signings to begin the day, this is lifted from Bob McKenzie's twitter:
- VAN: Sami Salo, 2M times 1.
- MIN: Josh Harding 750k times 1.
- DET: Patrick Eaves, 1.2M times 3.
- CBS: James Wisniewski, 5.5M times 6.
- VAN: Chris Higgins, 1.9M times 2.
- PIT: Tyler Kennedy, 2M times 2.
- NJD: Andy Greene, 4 years.
TWEET FROM MCKENZIE 9:08AM: Jan Hejda is going to the open market and is drawing significant interest***
I have to wash the car, buy beer, fill the propane tanks and find a clean shirt, but will update as able.
Lordy, that Salo signing makes me relieved we got Smid at $5 million over 2 years. sarcasm alert...
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, Matheson quoted smid as saying "I was surprised I got so much" and something about him being surprised at how quick the deal was done. Too bad I don't anticipate any news today for the Oilers...
ReplyDeleteThere could be plenty of news. "Souray buyout denied--he's hurt!" or "Penner trade revoked--he's missing a leg!"
ReplyDeleteLots of news could come out today.
Wiz gets 6 yr $33M deal - that's gonna hurt them at some point in Columbus.
ReplyDeleteJay: A lack of news might be a good thing today. I'm kind of afraid at what they might find at the end of their hook.
ReplyDeleteHowson is going "all in" with a pair of 2s.
Oh yeah, there could be news... sorry. Just not good news about us signing an actual NHL player, I meant. :p
ReplyDeleteWhat's going to happen with Teddy Peckman? I wonder how the Smid signing impacts his QO? Peckham's counting numbers look far better than Smid's. I have no idea how the RFA process works, can Peckman get awarded $3 million per for four years by an arbitrator based on Smid's contract, lol?
I wonder what Peckham thought of Smid's contract? Did dollar signs light up his eyes?
ReplyDeletePeckhsam is farther from free agency (Oilers bough one ufa year from Smid if I'm reading it correctly) and he hasn't passed Smid on the depth chart imo.
ReplyDeletePlus there's almost 2 years age difference and lots of gap in pro experience. i don't think Peckman can take much from Laddy's windfall.
I remember reading a column in the Journal after Souray signed. He had been looking for at least $10 to $11M over 3 years from the Habs but they were thinking less money over a shorter term. The phone rings at his agents office and Klowe offers him something like $22.5 over 5 years right out of the blue. (Numbers might not be exact) The agent calls Souray and asks him what he thinks. Souray says to call back and accept the deal before they change their mind!! Fast forward 4 years to the office of Smid's agent... Some things never change and stupid people don't get smarter.
ReplyDeleteHappy Canada Day!
“They made an offer on Monday and we had it done on Wednesday. I was kind of surprised (at the speed of negotiations),” said Smid. “I didn’t expect this much.”
ReplyDeleteWeak job negotiating Tambo.
Clarkenstein: lol. Maybe we can have the phones disconnected?
ReplyDeleteToo many dollars chasing to few real NHL players.
ReplyDeleteThis will make next year's CBA talks pretty interesting.
Have to admit I was hoping we might find a way to bring back Hedja, but will be relieved if we can just come out of this realizing there's no reason to bring back Struds as anything other than a coach.
hope tambo sends a few deals to the lesser ufa's who may not get interest thjis early. Maybe a gy like Belanger who sees a 2 yr $1.5 mill per from the Oil jumps at it in fear of being left without a dance partner by August. Same thing with Fiddler. 2 yrs $1.5 mill per solidifies our 3rd/4th line centre position, brings some experience and allows us to take our time on kids.
ReplyDeleteAs for Hejda, with the lack of quality dmen out there I expect someone will give him $3 mill per season over 3 yrs, and I think the Oil would not go there for that money.
regarding Peckham... the club hasn't filed for arbitration, right? Even if they had, I don't believe an arbitrator would give out a four year deal. IIRC, two years deals are rare.
ReplyDeleteStauffer said he talked to some players who wouldn't be surprised to see Edmonton born Vernon Fiddler get $2.5MM/year.
ReplyDeleteBig raise if he gets it.
Stauffer indicated that kind of money would take the Oilers out of the Fiddler sweepstakes.
Why?
Isn't having a BatKatz supposed to help in these situations?
This is a player the Oilers *know* would be a perfect fit as a transitional player.
If he's willing to sign a 2 year deal, shouldn't v3.1 just get it done? They paid $5M for Souray to play in Hershey last year, surely they can pay Edmonton Prodigal Son Vernon Fiddler the same to mentor some young centers?
Why would a matter of $500K or so more than they want to pay put the Oilers out of the running when they spent that on Alexandre Giroux to play in OKC?
There is a disconnect between the actions and words.
I guess all we can do is wait...
Does anyone know if there is a patron saint of Edmonton so I know who to pray to when I light a candle in an Edmonton Cathedral hoping for Edmonton born Vernon Fiddler to play in Edmonton?
As long as the deal comes off the books before Hall, etc are eligible for new contracts then the dollar amount isn't as big a deal. jmo.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with getting Fiddler signed is NOT money for the Oilers. It is duration.
ReplyDeleteHe will be getting three or more years.
Ditto for Hejda.
He will be getting three or more years.
Agree with your comments LT. A little overpayment for a 2 year deal before Hall, Eberle and Paajarvi coming off entry level deals is not bad for someone who fills a gaping hole at center.
ReplyDeleteAnd by that point, Lander should be ready to take over.
He will be getting three or more years.
ReplyDeleteIf someone offers Edmonton Native Son Vernon Fiddler $2.0MM x 3 years, and Edmonton offers $3.0MM x 2 years, which do you think he takes?
Edmonton can get him if they want him.
If someone offers Edmonton Native Son Vernon Fiddler $2.0MM x 3 years, and Edmonton offers $3.0MM x 2 years, which do you think he takes?
ReplyDeleteEdmonton can get him if they want him.
Does Edmonton-born Vernon Fiddler want to play for a rebuilding team or a potential Stanley Cup Champion? Because that's may be the difference in those two potential offers to one of Edmonton's favorites sons.
What a craptacular batch of FAs.
ReplyDeleteI'd like Ian White, Hedja, Fiddler. But with thing so thin, they'll have to pay a boatload to bring them in.
It may be a blessing in disguise as it pumps up Cogliano/Gilberts trade vale.
The Oilers should hope the Rangers get Richards.
ReplyDeleteIt might shake a centre loose there (Richards, Dubinsky, Stepan, Anisimov, Avery, Boyle)
so the Oil have two ways to go in regards to ufa deals.
ReplyDelete1. Overpay for 2 yrs
2. go for length of contract
both can attract UFA's. The older guys may go for more money in shorter term since injury and buyout's limit their long term earning potential. Term is more important to younger players, so maybe a fiddler goes for 4+ yrs (not in the cards as an oiler).
So if those are the options, then early to mid 30's mid level ufa's on 2 yr overpays become the goal.
1. Belanger - 2 yrs $2 mill per
2. Hejda - 2 yrs $4 mill per
3. Reasoner - 2 yrs $1.75 mill per
4. Konopka - 2 yrs $1.125 mill per (yes I know he has warts, but would you rather have him or Macintyre. Basically he is Stortini but can win a faceoff and kill penalties a bit)
5. Hamrlik - 2 yrs $4 mill per
6. Handzus - 2 yrs $3 mill per
the numbers are not the order I would necessarily target them in. But those are the over 30 guys who may go for a 2 yr overpay. I'm sure there are more, just the ones off the top of my head.
Higgins 2 yrs $1.9 mill per as per MAckenzie
ReplyDeleteHiggins 2 x 1.9 in Vancouver
ReplyDeleteHejda is lkely getting offers of $4 million for three years.
ReplyDeleteI'll take the "over $4.9 million per season" on Hamrlik's 2-year deal.
If I was a imending UFA player and my agent had me sign before July 1, I'd fire him. What a lean ufa year.
ReplyDeleteRaffi Torres is available.
ReplyDeleteTorres will get signed, but not until Jacques decides where to go.

Oilers are working on Andy Green and Ben Eager
1 minute ago
eager and Greene. both would help. greene may be underrated. he is a top 4, can pp and pk. sill need a centreman
ReplyDeleteI was going to post something about the Oilers and free agency, but decided against it because it doesn't seem like the Oilers are all that interested in being active.
ReplyDeletethey are in a funny spot, the free agency pool is shallow enough that I'm not sure they could make the playoffs even if they "cap out" over the next 48 hours. Or am I underselling?
Add Fiddler, Vokoun, Hamrlik, Hejda, is EDM a playoff team?
According to TSN, the Pens have pulled their offer to Jagr. Apparently, some other teams are now interested and it looks like the price might be going up.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if Brad Richards would seriously look at Buffalo. Nice young defense, a top tier goaltender in Miller, some forwards who can really put the puck in the net and a stable management group with a loaded owner. Could be a great situation there, much better than the Rags or the Leafs.
If it's true about Eager and Greene, than I like what V.031 is looking to do so far.
Wow, Andy Greene should bring a ton of toughness to the blueline. Being just a hair smaller than Sam Gagner, he's just what every blue line needs. Maybe they should convert Cogs to D?
ReplyDeletePardon my ignorance but why is EDM born Vern Fiddler such a prince and Konopka such a toad?
ReplyDeleteFiddler had 46 pts last year which is nice but if he is supposed to be a great defensive centre why does he have the 26th best (second worst) Rel Corsi on the Yotes (-16.4)?
Konopka had a -23 Rel Corsi but only had 30% of his faceoffs in the offensive zone. (Fiddler had 36%.) Konopka had 300 PIM's and 9 pts.
No doubt there is a difference there but I don't think it is as much as some here are making out.
"Add Fiddler, Vokoun, Hamrlik, Hejda, is EDM a playoff team?"
ReplyDeleteThe team would be deeper, but it would still come down to the health of key player, such as Whitney, Horcoff, Hall, Hemsky, et al.
Jagr continues to dick around clubs. With Smyth in the fold would it be worth sending say a $3 or $4 million dollar contract offer his way?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure it makes sense as it would likely come at the expense of a guy like Omark.
Ben Eager would be a nice catch for the Oilers.
ReplyDeleteA real 4th liner that can make a hockey play....whatta concept!
Greene was profiled at length by the elite In Lou We Trust. Must reading if the Oiler sign him.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.inlouwetrust.com/2011/4/24/2130383/how-andy-greene-stacks-up-among-ufa-defensmen-at-5-on-5-part-1
http://www.inlouwetrust.com/2011/4/25/2132537/how-andy-greene-stacked-up-among-ufa-defensmen-at-5-on-5-in-2010-11
and there's more on ILWT.
Don't really care for the fact that Greene was -23 last year. I know NJ was bad, but damn thats ugly.
ReplyDeleteBesides if the LD is Whitney, Peckham and Smid, not sure where he fits, I guess he would be nice Whitney insurance.
speeds: good question. i think the real question is what ind of leap do last years kids make because that is who will determine our playoff chances. Will Hall have a stamkos kind of jump? 23 goals to 51 for Stamkos. 35 goals becomes a legi goal for Hall. Eberle makes a bit of a push up to 55 pts/25 goals. MPS to around 20 (ice time may be the thing that hold shim back). Add Smyths 20 goals, a full year of Hemsky (20 goals), a full year of Horcoff (15) and by adding some depth on D and bottom 6 maybe we do make the playoffs. IS it too early to drink?
ReplyDeletethey are in a funny spot, the free agency pool is shallow enough that I'm not sure they could make the playoffs even if they "cap out" over the next 48 hours. Or am I underselling?
ReplyDeleteNo, you're spot on. Which is why gnashing teeth over Tambo's "inactions" doesn't make any sense.
No more than the pleas for "overpays" and the subsequent complaints about how some guys are overpaid.
I forgot to factor in RNH's upcoming contract, so you'd have to drop one of those 4 guys I mentioned - I doubt you could afford all 4, along with RNH, Peckham, and Cogliano, under the cap, if you want them on 2 year overpay deals.
ReplyDeletepBoy, good points, I'd say Buffalo or Philly are the only real considerations for Richards if he's serious about competing for a cup and making some decent coin.
ReplyDeleteIf he goes to the Rangers it'll be for the payday, and I can't imagine why he'd want to go to Toronto.
I fully believe the Oilers are going for a lotto pick again this year, despite all their huffing and puffing.
LT: can't recommend that inlouwetrust article about ufa defenseman enough. wow. that is a great look at all the ufa's available. Greene comes in somewhere in the middle. Solid, not great. Played against tough lines with not best teammates. Put up some offense, but not much more then the stay at home types. Basically he is gilbert esque, and on this team that is an upgrade on everyone but WHitney and gilbert.
ReplyDeleteAnd boy that article exposed Erhoff as not good against tough opposition. And it really shows how amazing lidstrom's year was. One of the best of all time.
And Greene resigns with the Devs for 4 years.
ReplyDeleteAndy Greene has signed a 4 year deal with NJ.
ReplyDeletegreen just signed with NJ, per theforthperiod -
ReplyDeleteforget greene. signs a 4 yr deal with jersey.
ReplyDeleteAnyone for Cam Barker as a reclamation project. I wonder what kind of offers he'll get today. He could be good for a 7th Dman type signing that will kick some guys in the ass to play better.
ReplyDeleteGreene to NJD, 4 years.
ReplyDeleteBarker's finished. Slower than Struds...
ReplyDeleteGrean to NJ, 4 years.
ReplyDeleteThat girl in the bikini said the Oilers asked after Vokoun but there's no interest.
ReplyDeleteGaron signs in TB.
ReplyDeletegaron 2 yrs $1.3 mill per in tampa. nice move by yzerman. Smith now available
ReplyDeleteRoloson and Garon can duke it out for global supremacy once again.
ReplyDeletewould anyone want the oil to make a play for Tim Connoly? maybe on a 1 yr overpay. he's a bandaid, but he actually killed penalties last year, has obvious skill and of healthy could be either a solid #1 or a solid trade chip at the deadline if we are out of it. I seem to be talking myself into him, allowing Horcoff to be our 3rd line centre and cogs our 4th. Or even have Connoly between the swedish lads. I haven't looked up advanced stats for him, but Connoly if the price was right would be an interesting option.
ReplyDeleteCheer, we got Ben Eager.
ReplyDeleteoilers sign eager 3 yrs $1.1 mill cap hit
ReplyDeleteEager an Oiler!
ReplyDeleteBen Eager signing... not bad.
ReplyDeleteBen Eager signed in EDM, three year deal, $1M, $1.1M, $1.2M. Done deal.
ReplyDeleteMeh. Better value than Stortini and MacIntrye, but the holes on the team still need to be addressed.
ReplyDeleteOilers sign Eager
ReplyDeleteDoes Eager push Hartikainen off the roster for now?

Well you have to figure Jones plays the other side. Unless Harts or Eager plays the middle...
ReplyDeleteright now Haartikanen has no spot. Unless they move Omark or Jones, Eager has the last LW spot, with Jones playing RW (he said himself he basically played there all year). I'm happy to let Haartikanen be an injury call up ala Omark last year. Let the kids take their time.

ReplyDeleteAnd sure can use Joel Ward.
I have Jones on the 3rd line much to many people's chagrin.
ReplyDeleteNow Hannan and Fiddler please.
ReplyDeleteNot clue who this guy is but it's all I got:

ReplyDeleteEdmonton 'Eager' to get into the UFA market.great 3 year signing.provides protection for younger, skilled players. 'Ben'ificial move for Oil

ReplyDeleteformer flame adam pardy signs 2 yrs $2 mill per with dallas. Smid signing looks better

If LAK signs Brad Richards........ Trade for Stoll? Fits RH face off specialist, kills penalties, 2nd unit PP
ReplyDeleteUpshall to Florida.

This trading of Foster and Cogs for a defensemen talk I'm hearing could be a very important Tambellini moment.
ReplyDeleteUpshall....3.5/yr...yike. I guess thats how FLA gets to the floor.
ReplyDeleteTorres to Phoenix. 2 years. 1.75M per year.
ReplyDeleteMike Smith to Phoenix.
ReplyDeleteGuess that leaves Vokoun to Colorado.
"This trading of Foster and Cogs for a defensemen talk I'm hearing could be a very important Tambellini moment."
ReplyDeleteHow many gold coins does that get you is the question? That might get you maybe a #4.
Flyers sign Jagr
ReplyDeleteIf it's a #4 who can pair with Whitney or Gilbert then imo it's a deal the Oilers should seriously consider.
ReplyDeleteThe blue is death currently.
if Tambo deals foster and Cogs for anything, and signs fiddler and hejda it is a banner year for him. Just disconnect his phones and let it ride for the summer.
ReplyDeletejagr signs 1 yr deal in philly
ReplyDelete"The blue is death currently."
ReplyDeleteIt is. I'm with ya, I'm hoping they get a Dman out of all of this.
gordon in phoenix for 2 yrs $1.3 per. would have been nice here
ReplyDeleteso phoenix again gets a bunch of mid level depth guys. Smith, Torres and Gordon
ReplyDeleteI wonder how Jagr and Pronger will co-exist. Two very strong hockey attitudes there.
ReplyDeleteDucey,
ReplyDeleteIts the type of minutes they play and how good they are on the PK.
Konopka
CorQC 5v5 8/10
CorQT 5v5 10/10
RelCor -23.5 10/10
Takes on the dregs with the dregs and gets beat
Zone Start 30.2%
Zone Finish 43.8%
Net Zone Finish +13.6%
4v5 TOI/60 5/5
4v5 GA/60 10.60/60 5/5 - Almost twice the next closest NYI
Fiddler
CorQC 5v5 4/10
CorQT 5v5 9/10
RelCor 1-16.4 10/10
Takes on 2nd toughs with the dregs and gets beat
Zone Start 35.9%
Zone Finish 46.7%
Net Zone Finish +10.8%
4v5 TOI/60 2/5
4v5 GA/60 7.89 5/5 (next closest 7.32, best was 6.64, so not far off the mark)
So Fiddler takes on 2nd toughs and sees some 1st toughs with the dregs in the Western Conference and comes out slightly ahead of Konopka who takes on the dregs with the dregs in the Eastern Conference.
Fiddler played the Keslers of the world and Konopka played the Darche/Rolstons of the world.
That puts him heads and tails ahead of Konopka.
Konopka also does not skate at an NHL level. He did not get to the NHL with hockey ability at the age of 28, he got there with his fists and FO ability, but he will be on his 3rd team in 3 years for a reason.
Also,
No more than the pleas for "overpays" and the subsequent complaints about how some guys are overpaid.
We can complain about giving a plug like Jones 1.5M for playing below NHL replacement level and also bitch about not overpaying to fill a real hole on the roster (3C)
Its pretty obvious why this is.
Fiddler to Dallas. Same with Dvorak.

Belanger wouldn't be a bad option. Is a 3 year contract that much of a problem.
ReplyDeleteObviously you want some flexibility when Hall and Ebs need new contracts but you still need some players under contract.
Is Belanger the type of guy you want when the real push for the Cup comes along or is he going to be a little too old?
Right Edmonton isn't Winnipeg. Edmonton also doesn't have nearly the french presence that Winnipeg does.
