Bono Wants to be Gilbert Brule

Gilbert Brule is in the news. I can't begin to explain, details here.

70 comments:

  1. I'm not sure what's worse: Brule's facial hair, that hat, or that fact that his girlfriend calls him "G".

At least this solves the mystery of why David Staples relayed that Bono wanted to be "Gilbert Brule".

  2. That's awsome. Bono is like that. I met him in Nice, when he walk across the street from the restaurant he was going to in order to bum a light. After dinner, he came back and bought a round of $5/bottle wine for the bar (It was the most expensive stuff at the bar) and stuck around for a couple swigs out of a bottle.

  3. hmm go to the first game of the stanley cup finals, or.. see the biggest piece of shit in the world perform in edmonton?

    ReplyDelete
  4. This all happened and Gilbert didn't get injured, or contract an illness, or lose a leg?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Norman:

Wait til he boards the plane back from Edmonton.

    Snakes on a motherfuckin plane.

    ReplyDelete
  6. DG: Only if there's ol' Samuel.

Braedenc: Pretentious maybe, but asshole, I bet there's a lot of Tyrants ahead of him.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Good karma for the charity work he did last summer. Lord knows the hockey gods didn't appreciate it, but the music gods did shine down upon him.

    That's such a bizarre story.

    ReplyDelete
  8. For everyone hand wringing about Erixon not wanting to play in Calgary due to climate/city/etc and therefore wouldn't play in Edmonton, please read please read Eric Francis' article explaining the situation

Its all about cap space and the availability of a spot on the NHL club.

There is no reason to think he wouldn't have signed with the Oilers.

I have no idea if Feaster would have traded Erixon within the division, but if v3.0 wasn't in there pitching, he wasn't doing his job.

The Oilers could have trumped the Rags' offer easily and still not given up key assets.

This guy is 20, NHL ready and was projecting top 15 if he went back in the draft.

Would have been nice to get the guy who pushed Larsson down the depth chart on his SEL team.

Don't worry v3.0 whatever Dman you pick this year might be ready in 3 years for the NHL.

    ReplyDelete
  9. When Bono was relating that story at the show yesterday I thought "that's a strange story to curry favor with the crowd/city that you're playing in. When making up a story like that, why would you pick Brule?"

Then it turns out to be true.

    Strange.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Jeanshorts beat me to it but that hair and hat just isn't sensible and have you Ever known anyone who Is sensible who has a nickname "G."

Bono's always likeable but he'd be even moreso if he could write new music that was good.

  11. Read this morning That Mr. Gudbranson might be loathe to signing with Florida. If that's the case, ot's time to pick p the phone and see if the 19th pick + gets you in the conversation for a trade.

6' 4" 200+, mean, big shot, good skater. Make it happen.

    If it's true.

Do you have a source for this? If true, very interesting...

  14. There is a balance thing that applies to luck in people's lives (not karma, 'cause that stuff is tyrannical; warning, link has religious content) and Brule's struggles this year were all apparently the flip side of him driving down the road to pick up one of the most famous people on the planet. Unbelievable

    ReplyDelete
  15. The article was from a Sabres blogger so I take it with a grain of salt.

It just seems to me that after the Erixon ordeal (read: missed opportunity), even if it's not true, it's worth a call to the Panthers to find out.

  16. re: cool to be a Canucks fan. Well, everyone loves a winner. Let's see how they do in a few years when the sisters start declining and the inevitable rough times arrive. (Cue DSF to brag about the depth and quality of the Canucks prospect pool).

    Nah.

The team is built to win now.

    Seems to be working.

Should be good to go for another 5 years or so.

    ReplyDelete
  18. in five years, the Oilers might decide that the they've gotton enough #1 picks and should try to make a run for the playoffs... sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Its too bad that Brule is more known for his stuff off of the ice than on the ice. You would figure that all of this good karma would be thrown back his way real soon.

    ReplyDelete
  20. DSF: well, whenever the shine does go off the gem, be it in five years or whenever, I'm sure you'll be back here pretending to be an Oilers fan again. I'm sorry your kids don't call you more.

  23. Anybody know what this "large" news is coming from Terry Jones at noon? I'm in fucking jury duty.

  24. Woodguy, I recall seeing you comment your wife "dragged" you to U2, so I take it you are not a big fan, that said how was the show? They announced yesterday here in southeast NB they are starting to excavate the site here for the big show in July.

    ReplyDelete
  25. HF boards suggested Erik Gudbranson may not want to sign in Florida. If so, if I am Steve Tambellini I would do whatever possible to get his rights. Here is my suggestion: The Oilers trade the 1st overall pick and the 19th pick and Brule or Cogs for Florida's 3rd overall pick and the rights to Erik Gudbranson. Too much!?? or not enough??

At the #3 pick we could pick either JONATHAN HUBERDEAU or SEAN COUTURIER and we would have a big stud defenseman in Gudbranson. Will it happen? Probably not, but sure is nice to think about.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I thought the same thing as Woodguy. Nobody around me was really taking it seriously, then on the bus back to our car i read this. Crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Jake,

No I'm a big fan. My cassettes of BOY, WAR etc had the writing worn off them.

Saw them before and really didn't plan on going, but my wife lucked into a pair.

I should have put the *bookie thingy* at the end of it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Jake70, I'm a pretty huge U2 fan so I'm probably biased, but it was an absolutely amazing show. Don't miss it.

  29. No suspension for Burrows.

Not because they felt the punishment on ice was enough, or that a fine was appropriate...

No, no suspension for Burrows because "there was no evidence he intentionally bit the finger of Bergeron."

    Are you fucking kidding me?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anybody read Cam Cole's defense of Alex Burrows. Apparently, Bergeron needs to suck it up because "it's a man's game."

A man's game played by biting, hair-pulling sissies.

As an aside, I sure don't remember there being this much media fellatio of a Canadian team in any of the last three occasions one has made the SCF. Is it market share? Or is there simply something about the Canucks that invites shameless bandwagoneering?

    ReplyDelete
  31. No evidence of biting? Are they kidding? It was obvious enough to be making major US news outlets in non-hockey markets.

I hope Shanahan brings some respect to the position.

    ReplyDelete
  32. She's hunched over to get down to Brule's level, but standing up straight, I would guess that Brule's gf is 3 inches taller than him.

Hmmm, I wonder if she has a good first pass, can skate backwards, and how well she can close the gap on the wingers? Actually, we probably have room to lower our standards a little more than that; Does she have non-pink skates and a hockey stick? She's got size, and we could really use the help on the blue....

    ReplyDelete
  33. Whoa. No suspension for Burrows. Is Air Canada going to threaten to pull it's sponsorship?

    ReplyDelete
  34. A man's game played by biting, hair-pulling sissies.

You bite the finger off. Shove the glove portion up his ass for pulling a C. Perry classles move with the glove. Skate over to the trainer with the finger portion, save it, let it rot, then place it in bergerons cube in Boston.

  35. Maverick: I like that trade idea.

Jones getting in the HHOF makes me almost puke. Someday I'll have to share an email he sent to me after I wrote him a message suggesting that EIG should sell the team for the good of the city/franchise. Jones was always an EIG apologist just because they were a bunch of swell guys.

I sure hope he's okay. Those meanies.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I just hope the bullet proof vest stopped any major damage from occurring..

    ReplyDelete
  39. Interesting to think about them doing Maverick's trade and then still taking Larsson if he's there at 3.

    ReplyDelete
  40. an opening fail by Mike Murphy in what will be his only series as the punishment czar before Shanahan takes over.

Bottom line? The NHL is still toothless when it comes to making a decision that might actually make a difference.

Note: unless your Bertuzzi and anyone could tell you tried to maim someone.

    ReplyDelete
  41. "there was no evidence he intentionally bit the finger of Bergeron"

Don't you just hate it when you accidentally bite people?

  42. "For everyone hand wringing about Erixon not wanting to play in Calgary due to climate/city/etc and therefore wouldn't play in Edmonton, please read"

That's like saying, "for anyone who thinks "3.0" is doing a poor job make sure you read Dan Tencer's latest article."

Erixon didn't want to play in Calgary. Period.

"There is no reason to think he wouldn't have signed with the Oilers."

Unless he wanted to play for the Rangers. His dads old club. Did you know that Erixon is taking his entire family over to NY with him?

Probably not. Dan Francis didn't mention it.

    Here's an interview with Feaster.

Rangers were after him long before the recent stalled negotiations.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Toothless, ha!

Watching Oil v Jets Game 4 from 1990 on NHLClassic. Oil lose but I still love watching Tikkanut play.

    More Finns please.

I also like reminding myself of the obscenity that goaltender equipment has become.

Gudbranson... can't see Tallon trading his first ever pick. And knowing that Dmen take the longest to develop he takes a stud first to anchor his re-build.

Which is what we should have done in either the Gagner draft. or in the Penner picks year. This team would be far futher on and we wouldn't even need to talk about Larsson.

Dale Tallon is smarter than an head in our office. No way we end up with Gudbranson.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Loosen up people.

Biting is the gag reflex for people who prefer to skate to where the puck is going, rather than where it came from (I'm parroting Gretz on Keenan's coaching style, if it's not obvious).

If someone sticks a stinky hockey glove into my maw, I hope my body elects to return a pint of stomach contents to the miscreant, but if my body tries to bar the gate instead (in a hair-trigger coin toss), so be it.

Sally short-finger should have known not to lean out the window in a dinosaur park, unless the speedy varmints resemble Bobby Clark in his vegetarian phase.

If there was more hockey in the Sopranos, I could add a joke about Alan Eagleson flying off with your penis, if you don't keep your wits about you.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Traktor,

So if Erixson goes back in the draft no one but the Rags takes him eh?

No question he ended up exactly where he wanted to be and his agent probably told Sather what was going down and to start pitching.

I'm not a huge fan of Eric Francis or most MSM writers, equating him to Tencer is a stretch, even for you.

Francis write for a nation chain and Tencer is a lickspittle.

Francis wasn't to apologetic towards the Flames in the article.

There are other articles out there saying the same thing, can you give me a list of you approved writers so I can keep it near my computer and quote only off your approved list?

Also doesn't change the fact that v3.0 should have been in there pitching.

    ReplyDelete
  47. LT has a post up on ON about Whitney tweeting his dislike of the Canucks and how hard it is to cheer for them. Music to my ears! *spits*

    ReplyDelete
  48. woodguy:

You can cite all the articles you want but they would hold more weight if you weren't the guy referencing them.

When you harp on trivial things that you're basically guessing whether or not Tambellini made an offer all it does it make people take everything you say with a grain of salt.

Believe or not, you're actually doing Tambellini a favor.

People read this shit and all it does as frame Oiler fans as idiots.

    Way to go.

    ReplyDelete
  49. "Don't worry v3.0 whatever Dman you pick this year might be ready in 3 years for the NHL."

    Congrats, champ.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Trashing other NHL teams in the league is usually considered a career limiting move for some NHL players, especially one traded as often as Whitney. Between that tweet (I know it's been a few years since that technology has arrived, but "tweet" still sounds ridiculous to me) and his recent appearance on TSN as a panelist, I might speculate that his foot surgeon has given him the word that he needs to hang them up sooner rather than later if he hopes to still be able to walk after his pro career. Perhaps he's already planning for the future with a retirement contract out of reach.*

    * The above is raw speculation and may not be true in whole or any part.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Stu Bastard would've watched Erixon in the SEL final against Larrson.

Perhaps he didn't think he was all that?

The bottom line is you don't agree with the managements currently philosophy and everything that falls under it, rightly, or wrongly, you will disagree with.

I know you want "3.0" to employ Columbus' shoot for 8th place philosophy but its not going to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Traktor,

Francis' thoughts would have more weight if I didn't reference them? Wow, I did not I had that power.

I will now reference all writers I diskike if it brings their standing down.

As much as DSF enjoys trolling, he never gets personal, all we are talking about is game we love.

You on the other hand, dengrate those you disagree with and try to make things personal.

If that's what you need to validate yourself, no problem. I got big shoulders, I can handle it.

  53. 6 says what a lot of people are thinking about the Dys but when you read through his twitter you'll see compliments HNIC's intro work for games and some of that stuff is off the hook unintentionally funny.

    Still, yes, awesome Dys comments:)

  54. woodguy:

You're the Rob Schremp of trolls.

At least DSF knows adding Jim Dowd doesn't make us a contender.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Trak,

    I don't troll anyone.

But should I get my shine box?

I've never typed the words Jim Dowd in my life.

You remind me of what MacBeth said in his Act 5 scene 5 soliloquy about life after the queen dies.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Spoiler: You mean that same smart guy who doesn't know how to use a fax? And traded a 22 years old tough playing outscorer for his own bust?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Woodguy:

    Jim Dowd/Wes Walz/Dom Moore

    They're all the same.

None of them turn this club into a contender.

If you want to hate on Tambellini go ahead, just do it for this right reasons.

You remind me of a vegan harping on someone because they are eating a Tofu burger.

    Its quite sad, actually.

  59. Bitch at Tambellini for sitting on his ass while Brian Burke signs a half dozen goaltending prospects for free via NCAA and Europeans leagues.

Under HIS philosophy that is unacceptable.

Bitch at Tambellini for not picking up vets that can be traded at the deadline for draft picks.

Under HIS philosophy that is unacceptable.

But don't bitch about Tambellini not conforming to your "playoffs or bust" philosophy.

    ReplyDelete

  60. Jim Dowd/Wes Walz/Dom Moore

    They're all the same.

    Never typed those names either.

    I agree that this comment:

"Don't worry v3.0 whatever Dman you pick this year might be ready in 3 years for the NHL."

    Was a little much.

It would be nice to see the GM of the team I supported with 5 years of season tickets do something other than hand draft picks to Stu and sign marginal hockey players.

You can disagree with everything I say, I don't care.

In fact poster Ducey disagrees with pretty much every I post, but does it by attacking the arguments, which I always welcome. It challenges me to make sure what I believe and why I believe it.

What I can't stand is your personal attacks because you disagree with what I post about hockey players and the business of the game.

Disagree with me all you want, I'm not the burning bush and am sure I'm wrong from time to time.

But disagreeing is not what you do. You talk about me like I kicked your dog or stole your girlfriend. I don't get it.

Mind you, when I see what you wrote about LT, Zona and others after Horcoff was named captain of the Oilers, I do get it.

I'm not sure what in your life filled you with hate and aggression towards those who disagree with your beliefs, but its not healthy.

Life's too short to be angry with those you disagree with.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Please elaborate on Tambellini's philosophy is, I have no idea what it is, outside of "high draft picks good".

I do not have a playoffs or bust philosophy.

I have a philosophy of any time you can upgrade your roster, you do it as long at it costs you less than what gain.

i.e. You don't give up good young players for short term solutions.

What you don't do it sign poor players with little ability to play the game at the NHL level.

Enough very good players are found outside the top 5 that tanking isn't the only way to build a franchise. (although 2 #1's a #10 and a #22 who gets re-drafted in top 10 are a very good place to start, but remember, they didn't plan on finishing 30th last year when they got Hall, they spent to the cap, signed Khabby and tried to get Heatley)

What you don't do is sign over the hill goalies to long term +35 contracts.

My biggest problem is that based on the decisions that the Oiler management has made, they cannot critically think, or they are stuck in what they think and don't know how to think differently ie) Khabby won a cup therefore Khabby is good goalie

They seem to be behind the better minds in the game all the time, and when you hear them talk it doesn't inspire confidence.

Listen to a David Poile interview then listen to a Tambellini interview and tell me what you think about each person.

Better yet, play those interviews to someone who has no clue who they are and ask their impressions.

Their performance (and LaForge's act in regards to the arena) drove me to stop buying their products.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'd have to say that there was probably little likelihood of Erixon coming here. Judging by what was given up and the number of teams that probably could have made better offers, he must've been headed to NYR. Warning bells go off too when you're pulling what Erixon is pulling. If you're good enough, you will make the team, competition is a big part of what it is all about.

As far as unlikely scenarios go, how about offering NAS a chance to get back into the first round and help save them some money so they can give Weber and Suter their raises? Offer the 19th and Smid for Franson. Considering he's probably only getting 2PP time, his numbers are decent.

    Then go hire O'Brien.
    ;o)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Gilbert Brule is MY hero too! He should be our #1 Centerman playing between Hall and Eberle. It's a crime that with his great talent, he gets wasted playing with Cogliano etc.

Brule of course, would then be bumped down after Hopkins is ready to play in the NHL. By the way, since Columbus is so desparate to move the # 8 pick, and they want a star player to step in and play right away, we can help each other out. We'll take the 8th pick for Hemsky - Thank you very much! Oh and one last thing. I would address the "big D man" problem by trading Sam Gagner (as much as I like him as a player) for that quality young defenceman i.e. Straight up or package for Bogosian or Del Zotto or even Gudbranson. Take your pick. Hartikainen (I believe) is ready to step in as a #2 or #3 Center. If we are in rebuilding mode, let's make the moves now that will make us contenders for a very long time!

Message to Tom Renney: Although I think you are a good coach, you need to realize the fact that Gilbert Brule is a NATURAL Center who can ACTUALLY take faceoffs!!!
