Oilers sign Marincin

The Edmonton Oilers signed a big part of their future today. Martin Marincin, the 6.04, 187 pound WHL defender from Kosice was a standout in the WHL for the PG Cougars.

Marincin (67gp, 14-42-56 -12 65pims) finished 8th among WHL defenders and led rookie blue for the league. In fact, Marincin finished 4th overall in the WHL among rookie skaters, a terrific season that has him at the front of the Oilers prospect list.

Marincin's splits are a concern, as the entire Cougar team struggled badly in the season's second half.

First half: 33gp, 10-25-35 +6
Second half: 34gp, 4-17-21 -18

Marincin went 4gp, 1-4-5 -4 in the Cougars short playoff run.

For reference, here's what Redline said on draft day:

Redline Report: "Tall Lanky D with a huge frame to fill out. Good skating ability for his size; Pivots well and shows good agility, though he lacks balance and acceleration. Skates with head up and looking for plays - smooth puck handler with good passing touch. Reads play quickly and makes good decisions. Doesn't force things that aren't there. However, once he makes his outlet pass, his arms sag to his side and he's not interested in trying anything else offensively. Lacks an aggressive mindset and rarely ventures off the blue line at offensive end. Inconsistent defensively - positioning in own zone needs improvement. Tough to beat 1-on-1 off the rush because of his mobility and long reach, but can be beaten in tight by quick, shifty forwards. Counts mostly on the pokecheck and skating ability rather than using his big body, but is improving in the physical aspect and does a good job pinning men against the wall."

  1. After Marincin's strong start, I couldn't tell you how many comments I saw saying "we drafted our Chara" in the 'sphere. That talk sure died down during the second half of his season...

I'm hopeful it's a conditioning thing that he'll be able to adjust to, but it's probably safe to say that young Marty needs a few years to work out the kinks.

  2. James L: Yeah, I tracked it pretty closely and the other Cougar defenders fared better in the second half. That Jesse Forsberg kid is an interesting player.

  3. Acolatse also had a killer season, and I think he helped boost Marincin's numbers on the PP.

    ReplyDelete
  4. At least one positive: Marincin came into the WHL weighing 187 pounds. The Barons currently list him at 196, while the Oilers appear to have "rounded up" in their press release, describing him as a 200-pounder.

So he's progressing away from "lean lanky daddy" status, at least.

    ReplyDelete
  5. He may not be Chara, but it looks like he's holding Chara's stick in that picture!

LT - Do you have the other Dmen's splits handy to post? It would be an interesting comparison.

    ReplyDelete
  6. By 'other Dmen', I'm talking the other Dmen from the Cougars.

    ReplyDelete
  7. JamesL,

The press release also listed him as 6'5". I don't really believe the Oilers on those stats. At the Rexall season ticket event I have a picture with Eberle and I am taller than he is in the pic - we both wore similar shoes. I am 5' 9 1/2" or 5'10" on my tippy toes. Eberle is listed as 6' 185lbs on the Oilers website. I could believe the weight, but not the height.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I don't believe the Oilers, either, but I'm willing to believe OKC. (The Barons, by the way, actually list Brandon Davidson as 1" shorter than his WHL profile claims he was last fall, but also eight pounds heavier.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I stopped believing the Oilers webpage when they still called the Oilers an "NHL hockey club" in April.

I was probably one of the kid's harshest critics during the course of the year and while I'm happy to see that some other posters are starting to see his flaws as I have, I will admit we still have a solid player on our hands here.

He's just, well, raw. I hope to be seeing him back in the Dub next year, where he can get #1 minutes instead of playing as a 5/6 in OKC. This is one kid we can't afford to rush.

  10. DG: +11.

as in +1 with another 10 thrown in for good measure:)

  11. Could be an interesting team in OKC next year, if Hamilton, Pitlick, Marincin, Davidson and Lander all end up there.

Lander is a curious one... he hasn't signed yet, has he? And he declined the contract offer last year, IIRC. Are there any time frame issues with his signing?

Considering that RLR scouting report, and his minus number, I think we have to say reasonable expectation on Marincin playing a regular shift at the NHL level is at least two years away. Obviously he has made a stride or two offensively from those numbers, but will need to improve his defensive game. I wish a PGC game had been televised this year, I would've watched it.

Anyone know when Pitlick is slated to return to the Tigers? 8 weeks recovery on a broken ankle should make him available this week.

  12. Re: Lander. I don't remember the exact timeframe, but I believe if the Oilers don't sign him in the next 1-2 months, they lose their rights to him.

    ReplyDelete
  13. My understanding is the Lander deadline is June 1.

    ReplyDelete
  14. @Lowetide & @Bruce:

Any idea how close we are to the 50 contract limit? I wonder if any players are candidates for buyout.

Hopefully they buyout Khabibulin and he "retires," since his cap hit would still count if we didn't buy him out right?

    ReplyDelete
  15. @Spoiler: Is Pitlick our last junior prospect who may see playoff action?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Lander spoke well of his time in Edmonton at the rookie camp.

I hope it bodes well to his signing. I don't think there is any need to wring our hands just yet.

As for Marincin staying in the WHL or moving to the AHL, I'm of the opinion that if he's physically mature enough to play in the AHL, he should go there.

For this particular player at this particular time:

2 years AHL > 1 year WHL, 1 year AHL.

I understand the 1st pairing WHL argument, but he did that this year.

Learning the pro game in a protected role, then expanding it as he progresses is a good way to grown Dmen.

If he were an undersized forward another year in the WHL would probably be best, but given who he is and what he is, the AHL is probably the best spot.

I don't think that's rushing, just logical progression.

The WHL is a good place to keep kids who need more physical or mental maturation. Its doesn't seem needed in his case.

    ReplyDelete
  17. raventalon40: We still have Tyler Bunz, too. Kid's been surprisingly good this season -- didn't think much of him when he was drafted, but it appears that Stu may have done it again!

    ReplyDelete
  18. June 1 is what I understand as well on Lander.

OKC is going to have a lot of kids who have a chance to learn the game without the pressure of having to jump immediately to the NHL next season. With the proper mix of vets again, the OKC and the Oilers can take another step to having a brighter future.

As a case in point, Craig Button made a very good point about Nashville on "NHL on the Fly" last night. They don't rush their prospects from juniors to the NHL but has them spend time in Milwaukee (AHL) to learn "their way". Looking at the contributions of kids like Spaling, Blum, Geoffrion, Rinne, Lindback, Klein, etc... - all played in the AHL and all know what to do and contribute to that team, it's impressive.

I think we may be there one day.

  19. Regwald

At NHL draft they showed picture of Marincin standing beside Oiler VP Bob Black. Black is 6'4" tall and Marcincin was taller. Now Marincin may have been wearing platform shoes but pretty sure they have not been worn by a male in ...like....40 years

    ReplyDelete
  20. So I've been thinking about the depth chart for guys who either have no contract for next year or are not on the list of "untouchables." In reality nobody is untouchable but considering who just got signed we can make some good guesses as to who WON'T be moved or dumped.

Which of these guys will get contracts for next year and which guys will be shown the door?

I have a feeling it will be a summer of movement and we might see a lot of depth picks acquired at the draft.

Omark, O'Marra, McDonald, Giroux, Reddox, VVV, Kytnar

Jones, Jacques, MacIntyre, Stortini, Abney, Fraser, Marquardt

Vandermeer, Smid, Peckham, Strudwick, Petiot, Teubert, Plante, Bendfeld, Motin, Bigos

Gilbert, Chorney, Petry, Davidson, Fedun, Blaine, Montgomery, Hesketh

Would the Oilers trade guys like Smid, Gilbert or Teubert, given the duplication of their skillset on the roster? Or is that the required level of "depth" we need in the organization?

Is it time to flush guys like Hesketh yet?

I would hate to trade prospects but if we're trading quality to get quality I'm okay with it too.

    ReplyDelete
  21. WG

I like to see prospects stay at a lower level till they can produce offensively at that level. Once they've learned how to get time and space, the techniques needed to score, and the confidence to do so consistently, I think they should be moved up. It is my belief that defensive sense is best learned at the higher level where the coaching is presumably better, the systems, and of course the opponents too.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @James: I keep forgetting to list him even though he was a big reason RNH's club lost. Good call.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Matty said on April 17:

"Lander, who turns 20 on April 24, turned down an Oilers’ contract offer last year and went back for a fourth season with Timra. He may have run his course there.

The Oilers certainly want to see Lander in North America, either in the NHL or with their American Hockey League team at Oklahoma City.

The six-foot, 194-pound Timra assistant captain talked to Steve Tambellini a couple of weeks ago when the Oilers general manager was in Europe scouting Adam Larsson."

I don't think there is any reason to think he won't sign.

    ReplyDelete
  24. RT....

Bunz too on that Tiger team, and Czerwonka with the Ice, who look like they're moving on to the next round.

Thanks, Bruce. I think ST went to Germany for the U18s, so maybe he'll swing by Lander's house on the way back. Really too bad Lander got cut from the WHC team after a great tryout. Would've been nice to get a couple of looks.

    ReplyDelete
  25. @Spoiler: James L beat you too it! :-)

But yeah, exciting play by Bunz. From rookie camp I remember he had a wicked glove hand.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I see nothing wrong with keeping Marincin in the WHL for one more year. I think one of the big issues with him was simply conditioning and not being used to the longer season of the WHL. There's no need to rush this guy. I say give him one more year in the WHL, then 2 in the AHL. If the Oilers draft Larsson I could see him and Marincin being one tough pairing if all goes well.

    ReplyDelete
  27. raventalon:

Here is a post of mine from a few days ago on the topic of the 50 contracts:

What is our current contract count anyways?

I think its about 54 (from my count at capgeek). But from that you can subtract some or all of:

    Struds (hopefully)
    JFJ
    Vandermeer
    Ondrus
    Stewart
    Petroit (likely gone)
    Pitton (goner)
    Bendfeld (goner)
    Moran
    Giroux
    JDD
    Gerber
    Stortini (he's a goner)
    Marquart (gone)
    O'Marra
    Souray (traded or bought out)

    54-16=38.

They will need to add Lander and two AHL goalers at minimum.

    So its 55 right now.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @Ducey:

I can see them keeping one of Ondrus or Moran, since they were are great role players.

I'm not convinced the Oilers are done with JFJ, O'Marra and JDD. Though I wish they were done with JFJ and O'Marra.

With regards to Souray, after this year's fail-bomb on waivers, I sure hope they buy him out.

And I would be willing to package Smid for a pick, but that would require us to retain one of the veteran defensemen.

So that would come out to... 40 something?

Also, just throwing this out there... but given the Oilers history with guys like Glencross, is it possible they just walk away from Jones without making an offer?

    @melancholyculkin:

I think Marincin has nothing left to prove at the WHL level. He can provide the offense, and he has gained a lot of weight. Davidson too.

Time for them to take leadership roles in the AHL because when they are "ready" for the NHL some day they will not be playing the Theo Peckham role. Rather, they will need to apply what they learned at each level of hockey and apply it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I can see them keeping one of Ondrus or Moran, since they were are great role players.

Oilers Jambalaya reported this morning that Moran is heading back to Sweden.

    ReplyDelete
  30. @Ribs: So I guess he must've seen the "writing on the wall."

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think Marincin could put up 40 points and be a PP quarterback for the Barons.

    Marincin - Petry
    Plante - Teubert
    Davidson - Montgomery
    Fedun - Motin

Not too bad a list but could still use some work. After seeing this list I'm not unconvinced the Oilers will draft Larsson instead of one of the other 5 forwards.

Anybody else on the Landeskog wagon here?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Marincin - Petry
    Plante - Teubert
    Davidson - Montgomery
    Fedun - Motin

Petry in OKC next year?Don't see it happening.

    ReplyDelete
  33. @Ribs: So I guess he must've seen the "writing on the wall."

Yup. I just hope they don't lose too many of those kind of guys in the off season.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Giroux was openly pissed at the Oilers org.

I don't think he's coming back after contract ends.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Souray in playoffs, if anyone cares, 6 games played, 1G 1A 2pts +2 16PIM. Hershey loses in 6 vs. Charlotte. And speaking of Charlotte, in those 6 games, Riley Nash was 0 1 1 10PIM.

    ReplyDelete
  36. @hockeyguy10: I think he's physically ready to play in the NHL but I'm not convinced he'll earn a spot at camp unless the Oilers make him a spot. We'll have to see in September/October

    @Ribs: Agreed.

@FPB: He must've signed last year thinking "hey, with an NHL team this bad, I have to make the show this year." But what he really signed up for was a babysitting role in OKC similar to the one Martni Gerber had. He did get his cup of tea, but whether he earned an extended stay is up to the eye of the beholder.

    Just a theory I have.

    ReplyDelete
  37. FPB, why was Giroux PO'd at the Oilers??

    ReplyDelete
  38. @raventalon40:You could be right,but I hope your wrong. :-)
I think he showed flashes of being a very good defenceman.I especially liked his play after the recall,he seems to have a head for the game.

"trict"--of course my eyes could have been trict!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think that maybe Giroux had a right to be pissed about getting fed a line by the Oilers when he signed. That doesn't change the fact that he got paid damn good money (1/2 M) to be a veteran AHL scorer. Frankly, that is all he really is, so he shouldn't be too torn up about it.

I will be surprised if he gets a better offer elsewhere next year.

    ReplyDelete
  40. @hockeyguy10: He's certainly better that Strudwick, Vandermeer, and I would argue almost Smid.

If Struds retires and they don't bring in any UFAs or via trade to replace him and/or Vandermeer, Petry makes it by default. Though I'd rather they sign a cheap veteran to make him earn the spot.

Plus, if it's a decent UFA signing at a decent price we don't have to worry about it since it's win-win.

    1. Petry is better, lose UFA on waivers.
    2. Petry is better, UFA plays as a 4th or 5th or 6th.
    3. Petry is better, UFA plays in OKC.
    4. Petry is one of the last cuts but one of the first callups, UFA plays instead.

    Win-win-win-win.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Jake:

Getting cut for the profit of JFJ, Strudwick and Macintyre.

Point 2 is relied to the first, he tought the dice were rolled before camp.

    ReplyDelete
  42. @hockeyguy10: To clarify, by UFA I mean a veteran guy at a short term (1, 2 year) contract who will not make more than 1.5 million. Not a top pairing guy!

Narrow definition, but that is the range of NHL player that Petry should at the very least be able to outplay to stay in the NHL.

I don't expect Petry to chug along at 6th or 7th minutes when he plays full time, but I don't expect him to become a worldbeater overnight.

  43. As many have noticed, Penner is not only the whipping boy of the Kings forum, but also blogosphere too.

    From the L.A. Kings Outsider:

That's just about right for Penner. He's a solid third-line player that needs good playmaking forwards around him to produce. If Kings fans expected anything more from Penner...well shame on us.

I was a fan of the d-train, so I'm not sure whether he looked good being a decent player on a crappy team or whether he's just having a hard time in L.A.

Solid 3rd line player that needs good linemates to produce. ouch that's harsh.

That's the Oiler way and a huge impediment to any objective analysis of Oiler players and prospects.

The Oiler "sphere" is notorious for not drawing comparisons between teams but pumping someone;'s tires because they are above average on the worst team in hockey.

Hopefully, the xenophobia ends sometime soon or the "math" is easily discredited.

    ReplyDelete
  48. That's really funny because Lombardi talked about envisioning Penner next to Kopitar. So obviously he thought Penner was a first liner.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Even funnier is what he gave up for a 3rd liner. He must be the laughing stock of the Nhl community.

    ReplyDelete
  50. DSF, I never bought the theory that playing with the worst collective bunch of players in the league somehow makes you look better than you actually are. It can make a non-elite player look like "the guy", but I don't think anyone ever suggested Penner was a franchise cornerstone.

    ReplyDelete
  51. ....and LA gave us a damaged prospect who can't manage to stay in an AHL lineup plus the ever useful magic beans that a mid-late 1st round draft pick represents. Seems like fair value if Penner continue to struggle - but he won't - he'll settle in next year if the King's don't make him the villan of their early post-season exit. If they do then he'd be welcome on my team any day.

  58. Really hope the Oilers have a D prospect pegged for that LA pick and wouldn't be unhappy at all if they could move up a bit to grab Oleksiak. I've heard nothing but good things from scout friends.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Penner is a better player than that. However, I am surprised that he didn't rise to the occasion.

The trade was fair value. Anyone not blinded by a 'fan' persoective knew it at the time. However, at this point I bet the Kings feel pretty burned. they wanted Penner for this season and he did pretty much nothing. In the end it's a 19th overall and change for what is now one year of Penner.

His trade value dropped a fair bit with his failure to show up in the playoff race and playoffs.

  60. Totally off topic...

  61. Now that Penner, Smyth, and Stoll are out, have any Oilers (apart from Pronger)from the 2006 run won the cup since?

I just checked, and the answer is no. A surprising number of them subsequently spent time with the Blue Jackets, though.

Many of them also never played another NHL game. Among them, Todd Harvey, who followed the Cup run by playing for a team called the "Dundas Real McCoys". You know who else played for that team at one point? Stan Weir.

  63. I'm not going to hold Marincin responsible for the decline of an entire Cougar team, which had an impact on his second half numbers.

He's got plenty of developing to do, but if he can get more of a physical edge, especially in the more-chippy AHL, we could have a similar yet obviously lesser version of Chara, which is still a pretty solid NHL defenseman.

  65. One potential compounding issue for sending Marincin back to the Dub next year is the overall strength of the Cougars for next year. Connolly's probably gone to the Lightning next year which puts a serious dent in their offence. Also, IIRC this past year was Sena Acolatse's 4th season in the Dub.

If those two are gone, expect Marincin to regress as he'll be the only big-name player in PG. I don't think he's enough to handle that.

On Penner; what? Nobody thought the loss of Kopitar did anything to that team? Penner was really the problem there? Surely it wasn't the loss of one of the Top 10 pivots in the league, was it?

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'd feel better if Marincin wasn't wearing pink skate laces - hopefully thats some poor forward's spleen splattered on them and not a commentary on his toughness.

Your lady lives there, duh on me, I am sure she knows the places I just mentioned, ignore...lol.

  80. I'm cheering for the Habs as well but only because if they make it past round 2 the Kings pick gets a little better.

    So there.

  81. Thanks Jake and FPB - sounds like Cage aux Sports Longueuil is the verdict, as it also came recommended by my ladyfriend's students. You might argue that we're lame for being adjacent to Canada's coolest city and spending the evening in Longueuil instead of there, but I would counter by pointing out that we're old and she works tomorrow.

  82. Well if you go there it doesn't really matter. Ambiance is always there during habs game.

Just for the love of god don't take the Ribs.

    The rest is dandy tough.

  83. fpb - What, you figure I'll get rowdy or something?

  84. Nicely played.

No they just serve some horrible versions of you there. Or at least from what i've experienced.

  85. I was talking to me 97 year-old grandfather during the Easter break, and the topic of who to take with the first pick came up.

I told him I would be leaning toward Couturier partly because of he's 6'4" and 200+, to which my grandfather quickly jumped in, "Yeah, but can he SKATE?"

If he could still see well enough to type, I'd try to get him RVD's email address.

TSN has an offseason assessment of the Oilers done by Scott Cullen. Not much new to us but its interesting in that he does some assessment using Corsi from Behind the Net. We don't see the MSM using these kind of stats - ever.

Makes me wonder if someone is lurking to get his material...Hi Scott!

  88. Well, being a fantasy guy is stats-based from the get-go, and he did attend that fancy-schmancy Stats Seminar in New England earlier this year.

  89. Cullen is a guy who has been using and exploring the new wave stats for some time. I don't think he is borrowing ideas from the comments section of this or any other blog.
