Oilers sign Lander

Details here.

  1. Yay! An excellent day for Oiler fans. Players do want to come to Edmonton!

Lander will be a key player moving forward. With a little seasoning in the AHL he'll be knocking on the door pretty quick.

  2. Good news for sure.

Would he have re-entered the draft if he didn't sign? I thought it was 3 years after the draft year (Riley Nash comes to mind).

  3. Jake70,

When you draft a college player you have their rights as long as they are at school. You need to sign them the summer they finish school.

    Yay! Lander!

    Very welcomed news.

You cannot have enough good hockey players.

  4. From About.com (don't know the site but...)

    Re-entering the Draft:

A player not signed by his NHL team within two years of being drafted can re-enter the draft, as long as he is 20 years old or younger at the time of the subsequent draft. Players over 20 become unrestricted free agents.

NCAA players are an exception: NHL teams retain the rights to a college player until 30 days after the player has left college.

A team that does not sign a first-round draft pick is awarded a compensatory pick in a future draft upon losing the rights to that player.

A player who has been drafted a second time cannot re-enter.

    Anyway, non-issue, he is inked.

  5. Edmonton... if it's good enough for me, it's good enough for Swedes!

  6. That's made my day - was seriously worried we'd never get him signed.

what chance does he have of makiing the big team at TC?

  9. Excellent!

Next questions: Does he play in the AHL or stay in Sweden?

If he stays in Sweden, does that burn a year of his ELC? Does playing in the AHL burn a year off his ELC?

(I am guessing "no" on the last two Q's as MPS supposedly would not have)

  11. The linked article indicates he will spend the year in NA whether it be with the barons or the oilers.

  12. Ducey,

He's committed to coming to North America for 11/12 season, even if he plays in the AHL.

He's 20 years old (just turned 20 on Sunday), his ELC starts to tick no matter where he plays.

Another good thing I have heard lately was from a interview Lisa McRitchie did with Drew Czerwonka

When asked if the Oilers ever contact him, his response was:

" I talk lots to the player development guys. They've been really good with us, they're happy with what I've done so far but we've got a lot of work to do in the playoffs. Hopefully we can keep it going."

The answer to that question used to be "No, they never contacted me"

That's a great turn around for the organziation.

Best thing the org did was retain Billy Moores as Coordinator of Player Development.

I've give v3.0 this, he has totally changed the way the Oilers develop players and work their farm system.

That will be his lasting legacy after his time in Edmonton is done.

Mr. Tambellini, clean house in your pro scouting like you did in Amateur and development please.

If you keep signing players like JFJ, Foster, Fraser and not Actual NHL Players, you may find yourself not around to see the fruit of your player development system.

  13. excellent news! so, does he stay in Sweden, or if he does come, does he play here or the AHL next year?

  15. Agree on overhauling pro scouts. Will be the linchpin of contending Oilers teams down the road. Start now.

  18. Though next year will still suck, things are looking up.

Besides, Brule, Fraser, Souray are all off the books after next year, just in time for Lander, Larsson (yes Larsson) to slot in.

Then, barring a catastrophe, it's contend time.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I can't help but feel we may see MPS' offensive game improve once he's playing with a centre he knows and trusts (assuming the lines shake down that way). Hopefully he won't be first man back and he can sustain the forecheck and jam in some garbage goals. Great news!

    ReplyDelete
  20. If a player like Drew Czerwonka is getting attention from the organization, that bodes well for the attention the organization is now putting on its prospects.

The theme for this team, especially as they trade off and lose players, is whether or not a team can be built ENTIRELY through the draft. The only key players on this team that weren't drafted are Whitney and Gilbert if memory serves, and even Gilbert was in the system for a bit before he turned pro.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @woodguy..Don't know if you knew,Czerwonka got carted off on a stretcher the other night.Went to make a big hit and missed. He got clearance to play the next night but they held him out.

  22. Players want to play for a winner. Get competitive through the draft and UFAs will start signing here.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Between Lander, Omark, Paajarvi, and if they draft Larsson, the Oilers have the makings of their own little Swedish mafia. First thing they should do is order a hit on the Sedin twins.

  24. Stu MacGregor: "Very excited about Anton. He's a player we look at as a potential second-line centre with for sure third-line ability. He's a great faceoff man, competitive at both ends of the ice. Smart, captain of the Swedish under-18 team. All of our interviews with all of the Swedish players this past year, everybody spoke extremely high of him. Their leader was Anton Lander."

    ReplyDelete
  25. Marty Reasoner with a bit more grit and less the faceoff prowess.

From my viewing of him at the world Jrs:
Smart player - excellent positionally, right place at the right time type of guy for his offense, but thinks defense first.
Likely won't create much for offense in the NHL.

So how many third line centres do the Oilers need?

By my count they already have 5.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Well they haven't had a 3rd line C since 06 so if 1 or 2 out of the 5 pans out in the next few years they're in good shape;)

Of course Traktor will say they have had one all along.

4 maybe? And ones playing first line minutes making first line coin, one is TBD and might shake out as a #2, one might make a suitable 4th line / pk type, and one should be playing beer leagues.

When the Oilers have 3rd line C's ala Maholtra, Pavelski and Bolland we might be able to talk. Until then we just aren't good enough.

  31. @Woodguy:

The news of Tambellini's improvements at the farm level is music to my ears. I have been very critical of Tambellini in the past but I am happy with progress so far.

    Lots accomplished this season.

Makes this year's draft really exciting.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Woodguy: Agreed on the Billy Moores (re-)hire as being a great move by the org. He really seems to have that house in order.

This year I interviewed a bunch of Oilers prospects at both the junior and AHL level and they seemed to be pretty comfortable with the level of communication within the org. e.g. Here's what Alex Plante had to say when I asked if the Oilers communicate much with him:

"Yeah. Obviously I'm not getting phone calls from Tambellini, but they do have a lot of guys in the system who are constantly emailing and coming down and checking up on everybody really, and it's good to have that line of communication so you're not working hard in the wrong direction."

Gave me a warm feeling, esp. the remark about "checking up on everybody, really". Very different vibe from what we were getting in the not-so-distant past.

  37. We have more than enough young pieces now. Time to start stockpiling useful parts. As was discussed in the other thread, that could start with picking up a goalie or two (Corey Crawford and Simeon Varlamov could both be procured, for instance). No harm in having too many useful players hanging around (as opposed to our practice recently of being terrified of losing players that aren't useful at all).

    ReplyDelete
  38. I read this morning that Crawford fully intends to stay in Chicago and that they should be getting a deal done soon.

Doesn't sound like he'll make it to RFA status.

Varlamov seems like the more realistic bet there.

    ReplyDelete
  39. We have more than enough young pieces now.

I disagree. We have the bare minimum number of young pieces. If they all hit their ceiling and stay injury free the Oilers should be okay.

But prospects will break your heart. They all won't turn out and some will be maddenly inconsistent. This includes guys who played in the NHL this year.

Great teams have depth at most positions. The Oilers are nowhere close:

In goal: DD. Bunz & Roy have a ways to go to be considered NHL tenders. DD has yet to prove he can handle the load.

Defence: Petry, Plante, Tuebert, Peckham, Marincin, Blain, Davidson. Lots of 3-7 guys. Only Marincin and Petry have any chance of being top pairing guys. Injury and the complexity of the position have always eaten up D prospects

Wing: There are not really any top 6 guys in the system below the guys who played in the NHL. Hamilton, Hartikanen and Pitlick are really the only guys you can see in the bottom 6.

Center: Lander, VV, Martindale, House. No top 2 C's there and only likely 1 that you can realistically pencil in at all.

So, we need to hope that the Oilers have a very good draft again this year and next year. Then you can start talking about having "enough" pieces.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Speaking of young pieces, Eberle with a pair of goals against Belarus this morning.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Lots of 3-7 guys.

Good. I would take lots of depth with some talent over a couple of high-enders and little depth (ie the current Oil D-corps). I would take a group of six to seven competent guys (ceiling 3 players) as something to work with. I am not convinced a Doughty or Pronger or Weber is necessary for every team.

  43. I'm between LMHF and Ducey - I don't buy that there's such a thing as having "enough" young guys (unless you're at the point where you can't stay under fifty contracts without jettisoning useful players, and we've already got the Cameron Abney counter-example to that). On the other hand, I don't think we need more, either - it'd be a nice luxury.

And Hunter, you know you're a complete fucking loon, right? I say that with all kinds of affection, but Jesus.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Enough pieces?

    How about the right pieces?

    Maybe NHL level #1 and #2 C's.

How about a couple of top pairing defensemen?

    How about a goaltending stud?

Jeez Steve we have a lot of third line centres, bottom pairing defensemen and backup goaltenders.

    Is it me?

    Yes, Kevin, it's you.

Time to start culling the herd and adding useful NHL players.

    ReplyDelete
  45. DSF - Eberle, Hall, Paajarvi, #1 pick, Lander, Hartikainen, Omark, Hamilton, Pitlick...that's more than enough of the good + depth young guys up front. At other positions, you always wind up bringing in other talent anyway. It's time to add NHLers. That was my point (not that it isn't ALWAYS time to add NHLers and I believe this method to be far less than ideal anyway, but you get what I mean).

Steve - Wasn't saying you could have too many, but anyone saying we don't have a wealth of young talent is full of it. "Planning" for more of it at this stage (losing on purpose such as last season) would be goofy (again, not that it wasn't already).

It should be GO time. I highly doubt it will be.

Guys who win early have a much greater chance to continue winning and being elite. That's true in every sport. Setting them up to fail is utter sabotage.

I get what you mean but a team that is overloaded with bottom six forwards and bottom pairing defensemen is not built to win.

At the moment the Oilers have two (fingers crossed) top 6 forwards and one (fingers crossed his injuries aren't chronic) defensemen who is likely outside the Oilers window to win.

    Their goaltending is just sad.

Dubnyk looks like an average backup.

    Have I missed anything?

    Jeebus SS.

    There is no quality here.

Hall, Eberle, Whitney on a wing and prayer and maybe Petry.

The rest is chaff on any good team.

How can you be so bad for so long and have so little to show for it?

    ReplyDelete
  49. DSF - Are you speaking of where they are right now or where they're going? I have trouble believing none of Paajarvi, Omark and Hartikainen will be top 6. I'd in fact suggest that at least 2 will be.

    ReplyDelete
  50. You know who's not good enough to be in the NHL? Every team in the NHL.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Skip Shirokov and try to wrestle Marchand out of Boston if you'd like another smallish forward. I don't know if I've just been seeing him good or if he really is as legit as he appears. A capstrapped Boston team might want to deal away some RFA rights.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I have it on very good authority that Shirokov is better than almost anything we got, save Eberle and Hall.

What about Gagner? Paajarvi? Omark? Haartikainen? The #1 draft choice? Or the older guys, like Hemsky? I can't reveal my source but he is top notch and assures me Shirokov is a sure-fire real NHLer that beats practically anything the Oilers can throw out there.

    ReplyDelete
  53. @ gogliano:

You can't be talking about Sergei Shirokov of the Moose. You must be talking about some Ruskie prospect I have never heard of. Your not really suggesting that a 25 year old former 6th rounder who put up .8 pts per game in his 2nd full year in the AHL is better than Paajarvi, Eberle, Omark, Gagner and Hemsky?

    Liam Reddox outscored him FFS??

  55. It would be nice if this guy learned on the job in OKC instead of at the big level.

interesting that macGregor talks of Lander as having potential 2nd line abilities though.

In watching the B's series I would love to have a Bergeron or a Krejci.

what can we take from Lander's SEL stats in terms of offensive projection?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Dennis: I get 14-19-33 as an NHLE82 for this past season.

I love the progression of Lander's numbers over his four years in the SEL:

    Goals: 1 -> 4 -> 7 -> 11
    Assists: 2 -> 6 -> 9 -> 15
    Points: 3 -> 10 -> 16 -> 26

The NHLE above assumes he doesn't improve any further, which seems to run counter to his track record to date.
