Oilers at Canucks G78 10-11

This is Don Lever. He was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks before most of the people reading this blog today were born. He is one of 5 Canucks draft picks to have played 1,000 or more NHL games (Lever, Harold Snepsts, Dave Lowry, Trevor Linden, Adrian Aucoin). Lever is 6th among Canuck picks all time in points (Linden, Vaive, Bure, Nedved, Cam Neely).

Someday, those old timey names will be long forgotten, replaced by Canucks drafted and retained for the heart of their career. Daniel Sedin, Henrik Sedin, Ryan Kesler.

The Vancouver Canucks are all grown up.

--

The Canucks have already clinched first overall, so tonight's game is about staying healthy, not developing any bad habits and rounding out the scoring numbers. Vancouver's depth chart is pure quality, they seem to have a replacement for any injury (save Malhotra, and even then how many tears can you cry for a team with a Sedin and Kesler at center?). This year's Canucks are not just historically good compared to their own past, this is one of the deepest teams we've seen in years. Quality, depth, few weaknesses and some exceptional strengths. You have to look very closely at the 10-11 Canucks to find flaws. Hodgson isn't where he should be, that's about it. Big freaking whoop.
--

Tonight's game for the Oilers sees them represented by Wile E. Coyote in the old Roadrunner cartoons. Order any damn thing you want from the Acme Corporation but it isn't going to end well. I can hear the sound of the Oilers falling from a high perch as we speak and we're miles from game time.

As an Oilers fan, I'm hopeful Tom Renney will remember the can of Whoopass he's about to open when the learned men of the Oil are discussing next year's team. Renney is a smart man, so after enduring this season I'm hopeful we'll see an outburst in Oilchange that goes something like "listen you clowns, I'm the one the camera points too after these idiots screw up breathing. And remember this, I held my tongue in 82-freaking post game scrums and never ripped you. But if you send me back out there with a cap gun and a prison spoon there's going to be more hell than a little bit."

Man, I'd like to see that.

Nation Radio is on at noon today, Team 1260. You can email questions to nationradio@theteam1260.com and I promise to get to as many as possible. Here are the scheduled guests:
  • Corey Graham, Oil Kings pbp man. We'll talk about the Oil Kings, the draft, RNH and WHL bus rides.
  • Tom Benjamin, the class of the Canucks blogger world. We'll talk about the Canucks, the playoffs and what Vancouver fans might do if the town team wins out.
  • Bruce McCurdy from Cult of Hockey. We'll discuss the Oilers 11-12, with special attention paid to summer moves.
  • Lorne Molleken from Saskatoon Blades. An absolute force, the Blades are having a tough time with the pesky PA Raiders and we'll find out why.
  • Jim Byers of the OKC Baron (he's their pbp guy) will explain the playoff situation. Please pay attention.
  • Gregg Drinnan from Taking Note. I have some connections in the junior hockey world (don't get excited, they don't run anything) and have been told Drinnan's blog is the industry standard. It's what the Hockey News was to hockey 35 years ago.

  2. The Sedins were drafted 1999, and didn't get ppg status until 2007, having played behind NasMorBert during their early years. Assuming some elements are analagous, a) who will shelter the Oilers blue chippers and b) is this team a decade from contention?

precodas = obviously, the beginning of the end

  3. No matter how deep the Canucks, until they win the Stanley Cup, they will always be the hapless Canucks. This team is ripe for an early upset, particularly if they draw the defending champs in the first two rounds.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Would I ever root hard for a Hawks team to pull the upset over the Canucks in a 1 vs. 8 series.

Granted, Chicago's my 2nd favorite team anyways, but I've run into enough absolute douchebag Canuck fans at Rexall during Oilers/Canucks games over the last, oh, decade or so, that I NEVER want to see that team succeed. I'd rather put up with the Flames winning a 2nd Stanley than see the Canucks win their first. That says it all right there.

soace: "So Ace", as in awesome. I think.

  5. So the wife and kids are out of town for the weekend. I think I've managed to line up three steaks in three days.

It's a shame there's no hockey worth watching.

  6. Put $100 on Canucks to win it all July. 16 to 1 odds then. I like my wager. Am very distressed at injury to Maholtra. Still like their chances. Am not a fan of Canucks, am a fan of good hockey teams. Same wager last year placed on Chicago paid out 6.5 to 1

Voxwah.......more like a small pocketknife. We are 10 or 12 straight losses and we are dressing an AHL roster. Not sure its even a particularly strong AHL roster

  7. "I've run into enough absolute douchebag Canuck fans... "

Aw geeziz, HBomb, I'm standing right here.

The Canucks traded Rick Vaive almost immediately upon drafting him to the Maple Leafs. Got Tiger Williams in return. As memorable as Tiger was in the '82 cup run for the Canucks, I can't help but wonder what the Canucks would have looked like in the early and mid
80's with Vaive-Neely-Smyl on the right side. Growing up sure ain't easy.

  8. Temujin: I've said in the past, you're cool.

It's the Joe-Fan types at Rexall that still wear Bertuzzi jerseys to the games that I'm talking about. Most of them don't know who Kirk McLean is, let alone Tony Tanti.

I'm sure there's some decent enough Canuck fans somewhere. The ones in Edmonton though? Bandwagon jumpers a plenty.

  9. Canucks better pray like hell for the Preds or Anze-less Kings to settle in 8th.

Not hard to picture Hawks or Ducks taking them out.

  10. wow, just returned last night from Mexico to winter storm warning down here in Calgary, and to add to my distress I see the Oil blew the lead against the hated flames and gave them 2 points. Ouch, that stings as much as the peeling of my burnt skin.

So the debate on who to draft and who to sign begins in earnest I see. Let me see if I have the needs correctly:
    - a tough minutes defenseman
    - a two way vet centre that can win draws and play physical
    - more balanced lineup with some grit

Same shopping list last the last 3 years. At what point do we as fans start to crucify this current management about ti's lack of icing a competitive NHL team. our current team may have trouble in the AHL right now. I know most on this blog have concerns on managements plan of tanking forever and hoping it works out, but I hope the average fan starts to get their dander up.

Unfortunately I think this current management team will have immunity until the issue of the arena is dealt with. Katz only sees the dollar potential of a new arena and not the dollar potential of long playoff runs, so he will do nothing to change the big boys up top.

  11. Can't stand the Dys - even when I lived there - but props to Gillis as it shows you what a real GM can do in a few seasons - too bad we signed their chai walla for our pseudo-GM position instead.

  12. 11 comments on a game day? Who was it that used to post cocktail recipes in the dark days after 94 was traded? That at least made the games fun. As I recall, that is where I learned what a Ninja was.

ephin- as in, I can't believe I am at home on a Saturday night watching the ephin Oilers.

  13. LT, you (well, someone) has gotta get the Oilers Nation broadcast downloadable somewhere. Itunes, right off the site, whatever. I'd love to be able to listen to it on the road, but in the house, sitting down... it's a lot more difficult.

  15. kk:

That was H-bomb. His recipes got kind of useless as the Oilers began their downward spiral and we all lost our sense of creativity. I'm drinking straight from the bottle these days.

There's a couple more things that you could point to as a negative on the Nucks roster this year. For one, their defense has more broken glass than ours. Also, a complete lack of Kyle Wellwood has left poor DownGoesBrown without a punchline.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hey HBomb, I need a mix for Everclear. I realize that by tomorrow morning it will all just taste like shame and remorse, but what can you recommend?

  17. When healthy the Canucks are the best in the NHL.

Losing Maholtra, Edler and Hamhuis, might be equalizer that brings them pack to the pack.

I agree with others that ANA and CHI are ripe to create an upset in the 1st round.

Would not shed 1 tear if it was Van leaving early due to a LOLongo choke job.

LOLongo posted a .913 in the regular season last year, but a .895 in the playoffs. Whoever plays them needs the Alphabet presence to piss him off.

I'm an Oilers fan. Schadenfreude is all I got left.

Playoffs are spring of 2014 at the earliest for the Oilers.

  18. Today is a good day for contemplating privilege at the top. I've always thought that finishing first was over-rated. It's nice to have home ice for G7 SCF, as we can all appreciate: how quickly your opponent forgets the can of whoopass in G6 when they're lacing up to lose the big one in front of their nearest and dearest. But how often does that play out?

You could have the 1st place team make a pick of first round opponent, and work your way down the line. The problem is that being picked as the feather-weight is likely to bring out the best in whichever team you elect to snub, and you always have to worry about side deals whenever a sport involves choice. Providing choice might even lead to top seed first round upsets, rather than fewer.

Just now I came up with another way to skin the cat. It begins with the 3rd place team selecting the opponent for the 4th place team out of the bottom four. Then the 2nd place team selects an opponent out of the remaining bottom feeders for the 3rd place team. Finally, the first place team gets to stick it to the 2nd place team out of the remaining chumps; by elimination, they've effectively picked their own match-up out of the two teams available, but perhaps no bulletin board will notice.

The way this works there's a built-in incentive when handed the choice batton to dispatch the team you'd least like to face yourself.

What's the likelihood that San Jose gains some discrete downstream advantage by gifting the winged Kings to Phoenix?

As these things go, it seems harder to game than most. And it might make the President's trophy worth something in the short term when fate is most fickle. The Canucks must envy the Rumble-Seat Tycoons, since we know to the flip of a coin precisely what we stand to gain from our stint in the stenches.

  19. Schitzo,

I'm no Hbomb, but orange or grapefruit juice were my favorites when I dared imbibe that. Coke works too, but as a dark rum and coke guy it left me wanting in terms of taste.

When I was 17 and spending a week camping in Banff (Tunnel Mountain), we saved money on mix one night by dumping a 60 of Potter white rum into a big Coleman thermos and then added just koolaid crystals.

It had the bouquet of Strawberry paint thinner. Worked though.

If I tried that these days I'm sure I would be hung over for 2 weeks or just simply die.

  22. I fear addiction above all for what my daughter will face in life.

    Addiction is a terrible demon.

Really sorry to hear that about anyone.

  23. I thought through the dynamics of that a bit more. If it were implemented this season, I think Detroit would conclude they were California bound in the 1st round. Vancouver would want it that way. Since misery loves company, Detroit would consign San Jose to Nashville or Chicago.

I suspect my mechanism would inflate play-off travel miles. I tend to find my car keys in the last place I look. The law of unexpected consequence works pretty much the same way: you get bitten by the next obvious thing wherever you left off thinking it through because you had other things to do.

    A bit dated, but interesting.

    http://www.ontheforecheck.com/2009/7/16/950950/how-much-does-your-favorite-team

Travel stress is less about miles than late arrivals into foreign time zones. Worthless, but interesting nevertheless.

If they're using the center point of major conurbations for this mileage chart, Toronto and Hamilton are the same pin prick. The buffalo don't roam very far.

Speaking of short flies, I was trying to buy a pair of jeans this morning. Never knew the TSA had so much fashion influence. Git yer hands off me: one look at these babies tells you more than you need to know. It's a new style known as "TSA trim" featuring a full three inch commute, available near you from the tennis-elbow section of Marks Work Wearhouse.

With short enough suspenders, I could pass off a pair of cargo pants as Bermuda shorts and still have more room to breath.

  24. Bohologo: in the early Sedin years, it's more instructive to look at productivity figures than ppg totals. At that stage they could be contained with a focused game plan, but it cost their opponent flexibility in other aspects of line matching.

It's rare to have a top line that no-one can shut down. But when you have a spent fuel pond that can boil off 70 cubic meters of water per day, it makes it hard for the opposing team to focus 100% of their disaster response on the melting pressure vessel.

Throw in some mixed oxide on the third unit, and you've got yourself a winning formula.

    ReplyDelete
  25. That is very probably the most laboured metaphor I have ever seen.

(Not That There's Anything Wrong With That.)

  27. Can I listen to Nation Radio online anywhere?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I didn't know the Oilogosphere rated a Wikipedia page, after so many greater notabilities consigned to the dust bin. No disrespect. FWIW, it's all true. But it brings to mind the comment I once read about Detroit's drafting success: that the bulk of their success could be laid at the feet of one good scout (who was named, and I'm ashamed I can't remember).

Guess I have to listen to the game tonight. Jack Michaels must be waking up in a cold sweat thinking he's been drafted by American Samoa to take over next season's play-by-play.

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704471504574441002980038542.html

That's one I actually had to look up, since I couldn't give a damn when I'm not poking fun at their yowls of ecstasy when they finally get some.

Theme for tonight's game: accidents happen. What does the great Mess have to say about how to properly celebrate pinking a sated dragon? Yowls of ecstasy? I think not.

For the pre-game highlight, we're going to need to break out some archival tape. Scratch Eberle: there's no one left for Eberle to look off. No-one would get the joke. It's a sad, sad day.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Karma is a bitch and now the Nucks are in string of it. The Oilers well it is like we are doomed every year to have a rash of injuries. I think even though they want a new rink that they need to upgrade the plant at Rexall and get good ice back. We actually have some talented players now.
I think we now have the shittiest ice in the league puck bouncing everywhere.

    ReplyDelete
  30. On the radio they're debating how "things get done in Quebec so quickly" with regard to the fact that Quebec city has a hockey rink (and Edmonton doesn't, seems to be the implication).

We should study this the same way we study the Winged Wheel.

  31. I'll be watching CVV's faceoff numbers tonight. If this (58.8%) is close to being his actual level of ability in that area, he needs to be working with 13 and 89 all summer.

    Its tough to teach:

True, but I mean he's only 6'2 and 190. Somewhere along the line the guy must have had some good coaching.

    ReplyDelete
  34. So...what`s the odds of Torres scoring a hat-trick tonight?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Jesus. Hartikainen hasn't just eaten JFJ's lunch, he's taken JFJ's woman and moved into his flat.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Was waiting for Linus to try that. Shame it was cogliano trying to cash the chance.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Omark just flipped that puck over the net purposefully.

Say what you will about his finish, but he is one creative player.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I really think Omark feels Hemsky's pain. They really should start a mutual support group.

Harsky is going to be a fan favourite though.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The slow motion on that shot just has me thinking Happy Gilmore.

    Can't defend, can't read the play properly...blah blah blah...but what a shot!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I love Lee and Weekes raving about Foster's shot but pretty much ignoring what an abomination he hasbeen on the PP. Just useless.

    ReplyDelete
  41. RiversQ, didn't you hear them state the problem? They need to get the puck to Foster more.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yes, Kurtis Foster. You can't stop him, you can only hope to contain him.

Going to have to come up with a new line for next year.

    ReplyDelete
  43. RiversQ, didn't you hear them state the problem? They need to get the puck to Foster more.

Oh yeah, that's it. Heck, Foster was leading them in shots after about 25-30 games and he wasn't scoring then either. He taught the glass a real lesson though.

    ReplyDelete
  44. There you go again RQ, letting facts and common knowledge get in the way of making lazy cliche ridden remarks on a national telecast.

If it was up to you, commentators would have to, you know, make an effort during broadcasts.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Vis with his 17th goal of the year for the Ducks, setting a franchise record for goals by a Dman.

Amazing what he can do when you put him on 1PP, and OTC isn't calling him Barbra Ann Scott for skating with the puck.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Omark with another doozy of a pass. I haven't ever seen a guy that creative behind the net.

And yes, I never saw Gretzky play in his hay day.

    Weak goal allowed there.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Do we pull Eberle for the rest of the season now? He's one point away from 42 - this year's tragic number.

    ReplyDelete
  48. How bad was Quinn? Just a ridiculously bad coach. No clue whatsoever.

I haven't been impressed with Renney either, but at least it seems he's intentionally trying to lose.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Wow, I turned this game on partway through the 1st and this is actually one of the most impressive games I've seen from Edmonton in months. This is a backhanded compliment in a way, sure, but some fun stuff from 23's line as well as 14 and 91.

My word verification is "fluke" :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. This late in the season, with what he's got, line matching is sort of moot.

Earlier in the season though I couldn't get why Renney seemed to be matching lines little better than Quinn's 1-2-3, 1-2-3-4 repeat.

MPS can not only fly, he can make things happen at full speed. Lordie, one day he's going to realize how good he is.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I got a good chuckle out of "These Oaklahoma City Barons are buzzing tonight".

    ReplyDelete
  52. I wonder if CBC's play by play guy fully appreciated the irony of saying "these Oklahoma City Barons are really buzzing tonight". He meant it about VdV but it sums up so much more about Edmonton in 2011.

    ReplyDelete
  53. No Hall to WC? Kinda dissapointing because I thought maybe it could've been a Stamkos-like "breakout" tournament for the guy. Oh well. If he's not ready to play, he's not ready to play.

    Hopefully Eberle gets the call.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yes, great play by Tanner Glass there Weekes. Recognizing that his team is trailing he tries to get them back into the game by getting his face pounded on.

That'll show them. Sure turned the momentum there.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Great pass by Teemu! And uni, I'm glad you also enjoyed that line.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Break up the Oilers! At least it's an entertaining game, plus I am drinking wine right out of the bottle.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Omark deserved that =). For some reason Hartikainen really reminds me of Harju in all those Youtube clips.

Would it be too much to ask the hockey gods to let Harsky and Omark tear apart the NHL like Harju and Omark did in Lulea?

Showerhead, yeah, the only thing that makes the talking heads bearable is the unintentional humour they spew.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Teemu's making a strong case for staying next year. If JFJ could fight like that more often he might take the enforcer role next year from Smac.

MBS draft strategy - fine more scandinavians.

    ReplyDelete
  59. The score almost makes listening to Lee and Weekes bearable. Ok, maybe not...

    "precc" What Alexandre Burrows is!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'd love for this to be Rod's last game called. The fun he could have with it.

Harski's already shown he's better than Fraiser and Jacques. Also Glass isn't really a fighter, one would think JFJ would be destroyed by a heavy weight...and you know he could throw his back out fighting.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Good point about Glass uni. Stauffer says JFJ may not be back because he hurt his hand in the fight.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Loses the puck and the edge, gets up, backchecks, gets the puck back, then sets up a partial breakaway =).

    Yeah, I hope Omark stays.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I'm doing scoring chances for Dennis (& David) again tonight. First period was 7-4 VAN with the 'nucks getting the first 6 in a row but EDM coming on in the back half of the period.

    Ohhh!!mark with another ballsy play.

Meanwhile, I knew Vancouver had a good club but it wasn't until listening to Lee and Weekes that I realized they actually have the first perfect team in the history of the game. It's positively fucking amazing that they could be trailing Edmonton after one period when they can apparently do no wrong.

    Brule hurt again, fuck.

Back to the game I go.

(Shit, post fail. Goddam word ver)

  66. It has been fun watching Omark figure out the game this year. He is doing interesting things all the time, and would have better numbers if he wasn't playing with guys who couldn't put a puck in the ocean.

And Harski is so good the unchaly commentators can't help but mention him.

    ReplyDelete
  67. @DSF

So this 8 FO sample invalidates the previous 85 draws?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Second period chances were 12-8 Oil, counting the penalty shot (not sure that Dennis includes them).

Omark does remind me of Nilsson ... Kent Nilsson. Disappears for weeks at a time but when he dons his wizard's cape and starts waving that wand, my oh my.

Loved the great hit by Smid on Burrows, not as spectacular as the earlier two by Rome but Ladi smoked that DB pretty good.

  71. First game I've watched in a month... I don't know what you all have been complaining about, but these kids look pretty damn fine to me. Damn, can I pick the games to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Omark's just taken this game over.

I'll take Larsson please, we need more Scandinavians on this team.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Vancouver really is pathetic. I think Omark's biff triggered their biggest cheer of the night.

    ReplyDelete
  74. 23 is worth the price of admission to this one. 3 or 4 goals would not have been out of the question tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Are the Canucks really going to be a team that gets away with a few calls per game?

    ReplyDelete
  76. The Canucks have gotten away with playing a garbage game since Naslund and Bertuzzi.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Best part of this game outside the score is that the oilers have been a "tough team to play against". They are taking it to the Canucks physically and getting under their skin.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Figures that the one game most people decide not to waste their time on is the game they win.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Been a long time since I could actually enjoy a game like this. No weak GA, the scandinavians looked good as did Eberle.

    Not bad at all.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I haven't felt this giddy and optimistic about the future since the 2007 run by the kids!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Someone needs to tell Dubnyk to take the articulate out of his interviews and start inserting some useless cliches. I haven't watched a whole lot of players who actually give good, thoughtful responses to questions after a game. Good on him.

  82. @ Bar Qu:

  86. I had the chances at 7-4 EDM in the third and 23-19 overall. 18-10 at EV.

That's after VAN had the first 6 chances.

Shots were 41-34 but Oilers gave at least as good as they got in this one. Deserving winners, and I can't remember the last time I said that. No matter that the team they whupped was hung the fuck over, we'll take it.

    ReplyDelete
  87. @Bruce - doesn't matter how they beat them at this point. I would even be happy if they played some games against junior teams when the season ends, just so they could win a couple more.

  88. All in all, in the downslide of another disasterous season, it's still a good night when the best Canuck Bible that DSF can preach is the Gospel of their Almighty Face Off percentage. Because, you know, Manny is hurt and stuff.

    Wnaker.

Time for DSF to have his dessert Ice Whine.

  91. Has anybody heard anything on Horcoff? He was supposed to be out 7-10 days, 20 days ago.

I guess Magnus has a harder shot than it looks like from my couch.

    Plague.

  93. So, do the Oilers send as many of VDV, Petry, Omark, and Hartikainen as they can down before the three AHL games this weekend? They could leave them here for 2 more games, then move as many as possible, if any, down, although that would be 5 games in 6 days.

  94. Canucks could have used some Vaive last night.

  95. At least we will know quickly where the Oil will draft. Number one or number two.

  96. Whoever drafts Tyler Biggs is going to look like a real clown.

The guy's got 0,5 PPG in the USHL and getting outscored by 16 years old kids on his team.

I wonder who'l get trapped by this year's ''Mr Upside''

  97. Watching Oil Change Episode 5. I am getting sick of Renney's rants. I know those guys are "professionals" and all that but how many years of losing do you have to go through as a player before it seriously gets to you? Praying for that smart off season.

  98. Well, shit. As soon as I say that it cuts to Tambellini pussy-footing on the phone: "Well, uh... I guess it's kind of, uh... whatever makes sense to you..."

Faith is so very temporary when you're an Oiler fan.

  99. When Stu is on the phone with Tambo saying "we don't have to make a deal", Tambellini goes straight into BS circle-talk mode. MBS had to know at that point something stupid was about to happen.

  100. I thought the Oil played pretty good last night, the Canucks supposed letting off because they are President's trophy winners notwithstanding. I am no Gilbert fan, but other than the gaff leading to the goal, I thought he played a real good game, one of his best by my eye (tired as it was last night).

  101. Showerhead- He was talking to Lowe there. It confused me as well because they show Tambellini talking on his phone in the other room.

Has anybody heard anything on Horcoff? He was supposed to be out 7-10 days, 20 days ago.

Ya know, I was wondering the same thing before the game last night. I didn't really believe them when they said 7-10 days though. It just didn't seem long enough. No rush. Heal up and go to the Worlds.

  102. That was a fun game to watch with my friend the Canucks fan last night. Poor guy.

  103. Ireland tweeted...

Win some , lose another? #Oilers defenceman Ladislav Smid left Vancouver with a walking boot on his left foot.

  104. 3 games to go for the Barons
and 2 back to back JDD shut outs have got the Barons in the final play off spot.
It looks like there is a CFL style cross over option with the NW Division in which case they would also qualify that way.

  105. how many of the current Oilers will be going back to OKC for the playoffs?
