Liam Reddox has been fighting for his NHL career since the day the Oilers signed him. He was selected 112th in the 2004 Entry draft but now ranks in the top 60 in GP from that draft season. He was sent out this past fall and recalled in time to help out on the PK, but one rarely sees it mentioned anywhere.
Liam Reddox looks like kid who delivers your pizza, but he's a smart hockey player with speed and a lot of try. It won't land him a one-way contract, but it should ensure an extended career on the fringes of NHL rosters.
Liam Reddox 10-11
- 5x5 points per 60: 1.09 (10th among regular forwards)
- 5x4 points per 60: nil
- Qual Comp: 8th toughest faced among regular forwards
- Qual Team: 11th best available teammates among regular forwards
- Corsi Rel: -6.5 (4th worst among regular forwards)
- Zone Start: 53.8% (2nd easiest among regular forwards)
- Zone Finish: 52.7% (2nd best among regular forwards)
- Shots on goal/percentage: 85/1.18% (worst among F's but DNQ)
- Boxcars: 44gp, 1-9-10
- Plus Minus: -8 on a team that was -52
- What do these numbers tell us? Liam Reddox is well outside the "useful offensive forwards" list on the Edmonton Oilers. However, that doesn't mean he can't help the team as a role player. Reddox led the team in SH TOI per game among forwards after his recall and the PK did improve as the season wore on. Also, although he isn't a main offensive contributor Reddox did have a very good AHL season going before his recall.
- How could these numbers be better? Offensively he's an end of the roster type guy. Your #8 batter, a utility player; like if Casey Candaele hit down in the order on those wonderful Expos teams. I think Reddox could be a useful roster player.
- Really? The Oilers will replace him this summer. That may well be, but there are bigger problems than Liam Reddox. If we make a list of the players who played in that 12-14F rotation this season Reddox has more talent than most of them.
- How many Oilers would you flush before Reddox? Steve MacIntyre, Zack Stortini, Ryan O'Marra, JF Jacques, Colin Fraser, Gilbert Brule. That's 6.
- How many Oilers would you keep before him? Hall, Eberle, MP, Hemsky, Horcoff, Gagner, Cogliano, Omark. That's 8, nine if Ryan Jones signs. If you add Hartikainen and VandeVelde that's 11 that are ahead of him. He still earns a roster spot, along with a knuckledragger.
- Seriously? You'd keep him. Unless the Oilers add some useful PK men and checkers then Reddox should have a roster spot. Liam Reddox has talent.
- What's his contract? Reddox is RFA this summer coming off a $550,000 deal. That's 275k less than Coliin Fraser.
- He's headed for Europe. Book it. Hey, the Oilers may cut him loose by not qualifying him. But it doesn't make it the right decision. Liam Reddox isn't going to score 20 goals, and he isn't going to be the team's enforcer. However, the things he can do are important, especially on a team that is in dire need of penalty-killers and checkers. Jacques can hammer, Reddox can play the game.
- Why do you like him so much? Renney kept him here once Reddox was recalled. Why? Here's a quote from OKC coach Todd Nelson: “He’s a big part of our team. He does everything out there. He kills penalties, he’s on power plays, he creates a lot of scoring opportunities with his speed. He’s just a solid, all-around player. I don’t know if he’s the fastest (skater in the AHL) but he’s right up there. He’s got that ability, he’s got that extra gear where he can pull away from guys. There are a lot of fast guys in the NHL and there are a lot of fast guys in this league, but he’s in the upper echelon of quickness. He can skate, and that’s his biggest asset. He uses that to his advantage, and people can’t keep up with him."
- When will the Oilers be good enough to replace him? Another 100 games should do it. My guess is that by that time another NHL team will pick him up. Same thing happened to Toby Petersen, who by the way boasted a 0.49 5x5/60 this season.

Wow nice Pic !
ReplyDeleteMatch penalty for Lucic. Sweet.
ReplyDeleteReddox just gets out of bed and executes.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you need to put a player on the ice who won't hurt you.
Liam is almost that player.
He is certainly more that player than the ones you listed as behind him.
Strong case for the Ginger here LT. And until this team can find some legit PK forwards, there has to be room on the roster for him.
ReplyDeleteWould absolutely keep him ahead of the guys you've listed. What becomes interesting though is what 3.0 and Vish do with the roster this summer and how they choose to address the remaining holes as to whether they qualify him.
If they bring some of the others over him, I'd be questioning the sanity of management for the umpteenth time. If he walks to Europe - can't say I'd blame him. I do think he's got a fan in Renney and iirc he was very upset when Reddox was sent down at the start of the season.
stedw - what Renney did when Ginger was sent to OKC
Hartikainen, VandeVelde and Reddox feels like a nice 4th line to me.
ReplyDeleteI think the useful thing is he can be dropped in almost anywhere in the lineup, say - just crazy-talk, I know - somebody in that Top 11 gets injured or needs to take a PB nite. People don't know what he's good for should remember you need to send 5 guys over.
ReplyDeleteEach time.
PISANI is on the bench!
ReplyDeleteBackhand 5 hole for the game winner.
any 4th line of VV, Hart and Reddox, would seem to imply that our development team is operating as we should expect: mature players ready for the grind, not junior aged rookies.
ReplyDeleteAs long as tanking is on, he's a usefull fill in player.
ReplyDeletehttp://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=363697
ReplyDeleteSince when did Scott Cullen start using behindthenet!?
His writing is not as bad as it used to be but even this was surprise to me.
Enjoyed the Habs-Bruins game. My girlfriend (who watched a fair bit of the '06 run as her introduction to hockey, but basically nothing since) was in the bathroom when Hamrlik took his penalty late in the second. When she got back...
ReplyDeleteMe: The Bruins have a power play now.
Her (completely serious): Oh, that's bad, because they can score even without.
Go Hawks.
SS: What?
ReplyDeleteReddox just gets out of bed and executes.
ReplyDeleteHe's a hangman?
I think Hartikanen and Hamilton will be eating his lunch by the trade deadline
FPB: It was a reference to the Habs only scoring on five on threes.
ReplyDeleteSS: Oh right.
ReplyDeleteWell we don't have Michael Ryder to make vezina gloves saves in the crease for us, so we need a bit of Lucician stupidity.
Pisani and Torres on ice together, reliving memories of 2006.
ReplyDeleteThe Poem receuil (ALcools) is definitely the worst thing I've ever red. Jeez it's putrid.
ReplyDeleteGod damn I hate those things.
I am finding it impossible to study for my finals with so many good series going on.
ReplyDeleteThis is great.
Well if the oilers draft RNH that gives us RNH, Eberle, Gagner, Omark, Cogliano, Brule, and Reddox. that is more than half of the forwards under 190 lbs, all but RNH under 6 feet , and that does not even count Hemsky who is also smallish thus leading to many injuries as his career unfolds.
ReplyDeleteAre there any teams in the playoffs with more than 3 forwards under 6' 200?
You can have a few small guys but for every one you should have a big guy who can play real minutes with some edge to his game, and try to play them on the same line.
If this team ever wants to contend it has to pick the 3 small guys they want to keep and go with it.
Assuming they draft RNH, they have to decide between 2 of Gagner, Omark and Eberle. To me the rest of them should be pumped and dumped to max effect this season while RNH gains 20 lbs in junior.
Of Gagner, Eberle and Omark, which 2 do you folks keep??? I don't have the answer but I don't think you can have 4 with RNH.
Are there any teams in the playoffs with more than 3 forwards under 6' 200?
ReplyDeleteHow about Montreal? Or Chicago? Or Buffalo?
hught
Oilers:
ReplyDeleteAll the teams who played tonight exept VAN.
Magic by Crawford.
ReplyDeleteRefs miss the checking from behind on Kane...
ReplyDeleteShutout Shutout Shutout Shutout Shutout
ReplyDeleteWhat a great individual effort by Jonathan Toews.
ReplyDeleteThat's a goal earned 100%.
Hahahaha 2 seconds after I do the shutout jinx, they score.
ReplyDeleteDanny: And what a goal it was.
ReplyDeleteNothing less than overtime would be a disappointment for this great series.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck to the Vancouver Canucks in overtime.
ReplyDeleteFbv I am pretty sure that was 110%
ReplyDeleteLet's talk about the draft.
ReplyDeleteactually being able to watch games like these are junk!!
Wow, that's a back breaker of a goal against the Nucks. It's been a crazy game with some exceptional goaltending by Crawford.
ReplyDelete90% of me hates the Nucks, but 10% of me wouldn't mind having a Canadian team remain in the playoffs.
Epic choke by the Nucks if they lose this one.
If there is a hockey god, he must really have it in for the Canucks and their fans.
ReplyDelete1) Lead the NHL in all categories
2) Go up on the Hawks 3-0 in games
3) Go up on the Hawks 1-0 with 3 minutes left AND give them a PP
4) Yank the freakin' rug right out from under their feet.
Toews with a beauty. Wow.
I think I am not alone in wanting to see Fernando score and send the piss-cutter twins to the World Championship.
There isn't a fanbase who I would wish a Game 7 OT loss on more than the Dys fans.
ReplyDeleteEven if they win this series, the President Trophy winners would have been pushed to the absolute brink by a team who was decimated by the salary cap and who overcame a 0-3 deficit. I'm sure when Hughson and Gillis get under the covers tonight, they'll talk about Kesler's stick being broken there.
Wow. If they win this they need to buy a beer for Crawford. And Toews.
ReplyDeleteCrawford looking good in net.
The only forward dressed for Chicago tonight under 6' 200 is Kane. Smith is 5'11 205
ReplyDeletePhilly has Briere, Richards (that surprised me) and Giroux.
Buffalo has a few small players and that is their weakness.
Yes Montreal has small forwards, maybe the only other team smaller than the Oilers.
LA and San Jose do not.
Anaheim and Nashville do not.
Yes Detroit does and if we had Lidstrom to qb our pp we could too.
Canucks in 2nd overtime at 9:21
ReplyDeleteBook it!
That Jonny Toews not a bad player.
ReplyDeleteBetcha St. Louis is thrilled they picked Eric Johnson over him.
Dennis why do you hate talking about the draft so much? The Oilers have the number one overall pick, it is a fascinating topic and an important decision. I don't get why you hate it so much.
Oilers: Bolland and Smith.
ReplyDeleteANA: Koivu, Blake, Sexton, Marchand.
NAS: Kostitsyn, Sullivan, Tootoo.
That doesn't make me happy.
ReplyDeleteWicked turnover to go out with
F'n Campoli
ReplyDeleteThe weather channel is forecasting a severe Smug alert for the next week in western Canada.
ReplyDeleteSJ: Wellwood, Pavelski, Mitchell
ReplyDeleteCrawford had a helluva game. It'll all be forgotten tomorrow but he was splendid. 2003 draft, tells us how long it takes sometimes for goalies.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the Oilers take another goalie in the draft this year. Dennis? :-)
Nashville wins in OT and an entire series, Thornton scores clutch in OT, and Van beats Chicago, what a first round.
ReplyDeletePuck presentation award on national television, for advancing to the 2nd round. Classic.
ReplyDeleteNYR: Callahan, Dubinsky, Avery, Zuccarello
ReplyDeletePHX: Whitney, Stempniak, Boedker
TB: St-Louis, Downie, Moore
PIT: Talbot, Kennedy, Cooke
Only WSH, VAN and LAK don't have 3 guys under 5''11
Crawford would be my first star.
ReplyDeleteDo you think Vancouver fans will realize they've only won the first round, like Kesler there?
FPB I said 3 is ok, it is more than 3 that is too much
ReplyDeleteAnd Bolland is over 200lbs
So is Dubinsky
fbv: Not sure what player site you're looking at but Stempniak and Downie aren't under 6' and Dubinsky is closer to 6'1 than 5'11.
ReplyDeleteLT:)
ReplyDeleteI don't know, I'll check in on the 10th thread where it's talked about:)
Fuck, that was a killer.
and was Hughson ever hateful tonight.
some examples:
- he bellowed "robbery by roberto" when the replay showed the puck him him in the fucking mask.
- he francophoned Burrow's first name in the aftermath of the goal.
I'm just gonna stop reading the van papers and I'll watch the nsh series with the mute on.
here's hoping det's healthy enough to take em out.,
I hope Tootoo runs a Sedin.
ReplyDeleteDennis: Burrows IS Quebecois.
ReplyDeleteThey still have three more chances to choke. Plenty of time.
ReplyDeleteWell now I have two reasons to root for the Predators.
ReplyDeleteTerrible turnover to go out on. When the Canucks scored Hughson sounded like an 8 year old at Christmas.
http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/3806
ReplyDeleteDownie (+Hockeydb)
Hockey DB for Dubs.
I hope Mike Fisher is a Canuck killer.
ReplyDeleteI know he is but how many times has Hughson made a point to make a point of enunciating it?
ReplyDeletehe was all about the flair tonight.
and I'm not gonna get into a battle about where people are from: i think people can be stupid and hateful no matter where they're from:)
I hope Mike Fisher is a Canuck killer.
ReplyDeleteIsn't he an ex-Senator, just like Chris "I Want His Head On A Fucking Plate" Campoli?
Hughson sounded like a 12-year-old who had just figured out how to masturbate. Repeatedly.
ReplyDeleteAnd it had to be AFB, the epitomy of all that is wrong with the Vancouver Dynastys.
ReplyDeleteSigh. I suppose we will now see a return of the Most Undeserved Swagger in Sports (TM).
ReplyDeleteTry this one fbv:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.forecaster.ca/thestar.com/hockey/teamindex.cgi
Pretty good site for seeing all teams depth charts, prospects etc.
Knew Dubinsky was at least the size they state, 6'1 205, but shows Downie at 6' 200 and LS the same but 195
Ten years ago I used to follow the text heavy "Coaching Science Abstracts". It was fairly heavy on endurance sports. I recall it covered swimming and rowing far in excess of their general popularity.
ReplyDeleteThere was one great article about fatigue in world class athletes. I think the focal sport was soccer (or perhaps basketball). What they discovered was that elite athletes lose hardly any hand-eye coordination after a long game at maximum exertion. What does happen is that the athletes begin to lose peripheral vision. You see the outlet pass, but not the guy one step to the side about to lift his mitt to autograph the puck with special delivery goat horns.
Decline in peripheral vision is always something to watch for deep into double OT. The guy might continue threading his outlet passes, but then completely fail to notice an opponent who is way out of position.
This is why as athletes it's wise to make a habit of the safe plays, unless your peripheral vision has elite stamina.
BTW, I'm not talking about the retina here. I'm talking about visual cognition becoming *more* selective than normal as glucose reserves diminish.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.livescience.com/6727-invisible-gorilla-test-shows-notice.html
Deadmanwalking: It has also been searched that you only see 10% at once and you fill the rest with what you expect it to be.
ReplyDeleteThat goes slower over time (You fill a bigger percentage) so more margin for errors.
Deadman-what's that gorilla's cap hit..?
ReplyDeleteAnd can he win a faceoff?
Was Campoli just in his invisible gorilla state or was he avoiding banking it off the boards because Toews was down on the ice?
ReplyDeleteGood riddance.
ReplyDeleteI'm very glad to see the Hawks lose.
They were probably the most arrogant, classless sack of dicks to be crowned Stanley Cup champs in recent memory.
They were probably the most arrogant, classless sack of dicks to be crowned Stanley Cup champs in recent memory.
ReplyDelete...and, thanks to their defeat, there's still a chance of their being surpassed.
Between the Dyns and Hughson I was swearing at the tv most of the night. When the playoffs started I decided I was cheering against the Dyns as long as they stayed in.
ReplyDeleteGood riddance.
ReplyDeleteI'm very glad to see the Hawks lose.
Anyone who would wish ill on Fernando Pisani's last shot to win a cup is not ok with me.
So now that all of Stoll, Greene, Smyth, and Pisani have been eliminated, here's who's left of the Cup-run Oilers:
ReplyDeleteFlyers:
Pronger
Habs:
Spacek
Lightning:
Bergeron
Roloson
Canucks:
Torres
I admit that I'm more enthusiastic about some of those guys getting rings than I am about others.
Happy Vancouver Canucks Day, everyone! When does the parade start?!?!
ReplyDeleteHopefully things go as swimmingly as they did last year for the Canucks.
Beauty Toews goal last night.
Well the consolation prize of this series is going to game 7 OT against the 8th seed (and having a -7 goal differential) doesn't bode well for the Canucks chances going forward.
ReplyDeleteBarons tweet...
ReplyDeleteAlexandre Giroux expresses a strong desire to re-sign with #Oilers/ #OKCBarons "I feel really good about things here.
That's good news for the farm!
Wow - I'd have bet money against him re-signing, unless it was just a case of dollars.
ReplyDeleteBut I guess whatever his relationship with the parent club, he realizes that he's likely to spend most of the season in the AHL, so Oklahoma City being a good fit might overcome a certain amount of bad blood with the brass upstairs.
Anyway, good news for the Barons indeed. They'll need some goaltending, though - not sure Bryan Pitton's up for the job, even assuming we qualify him (which we probably shouldn't).
Also this from Ryan Aber...
ReplyDeleteBrandon Davidson: "I really believe the American Hockey League is where I need to be next year."
Eberle skating with Spezza and Ladd this morning in exhibition game for the Worlds.
ReplyDeleteMan, doesn't the Springfield affilition experiment seem like eons ago.....hepe OKC is solid for years and years and years.
ReplyDeleteGiroux had 500k reasons to re-sign.
ReplyDeleteVancouver fans know enough to celebrate getting IN to the second round.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, good news for the Barons indeed. They'll need some goaltending, though - not sure Bryan Pitton's up for the job, even assuming we qualify him (which we probably shouldn't).
ReplyDeleteAt the year end presser v3.0 said that if they can't re-sign either JDD or Gerber they will grab a vet to work with Roy.
Giroux with an epiphany; It is far better to make half a million as an star in the AHL than to make nothing not playing in the NHL.
ReplyDeleteTencer tweet...
ReplyDeleteAccording to reports, Linus Omark is expected to play for Team Sweden, but has a nagging back injury that could jeopardize that.
WG: is that presser worth listening to?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, that would be nice news if Giroux does stay. We've got Pitlickm Hamilton and most likely Martindale and perhaps even Lander in OKC next year so we're gonna need three or four vets to carry the load and anchor the lines while the kids learn.
Dennis,
ReplyDeleteActually v3.0 said some very encouraging things. Its worth a listen.
I temper my enthusiasm as he has said good things before then gave JFJ and Struds contracts.
Maybe v3.0 had his own moments of clarity this year?
Also,
Here is the Giroux interview.
Seems happy to be a Baron and wants to come back. Therefore he won't be offered a contract.
Everyone was working off of one old interview when talking about how unhappy Giroux was with the Oilers and how he'd "never" sign there again.
Things change, people change. I still think Hemsky is here long term.
FPB:
ReplyDeletewhy dont you just keep listing players under 6' for the rest of your blogging career,..
It is really, really,.. REALLY.. interesting..
"faugg" (definition implied in post)
Corey Crawford appears to be an RFA...just sayin...
ReplyDeleteCorey Crawford appears to be an RFA...just sayin...
ReplyDeleteI think that's a great idea.
Offer $3.0M/yr so the compensation is only a 2nd.
They can pay Khabby not to play and not worry about the cap for 2 years.
Its time for the team to start building a good team, not just gather picks and prospects.
Offer $3.0M/yr so the compensation is only a 2nd.
ReplyDeleteThat is a really good idea. The Hawks seem almost as hamstrung next year as they are this (14 signed for $51M), so re-signing him for that much may not be something they can swallow. And having a proven keeper (even at this age) would be a great boost to the team and to DD.
But they'll naldff it, I am sure.
Didn't SJ offer sheet #4(not attepting to spell that name) on the Hawks last year? Then they had to match it and let the goalie walk.Which in hindsight was better for Chi-town.
ReplyDeleteYes Wilson OS's Hjalmasonsensionejdn
ReplyDeleteSo Neimi is now a Shark because they couldn't afford him as well.
3MM might be a slight overpay, but by much. He ran a .917 this year.
Even if they match, they are a conference compititor and you need to put the screws to them if you can.
Varlamov is RFA too.
ReplyDeleteWith Neuvirtth and Holtby in the fold, maybe it would take a lot less to sign him to something the Caps wouldn't bother matching.
Better to have a young injury-prone Russian tender than an old one.
Corbin: Idk why don'T you start just reading some more posts. Maybe you'l get explanations.
ReplyDelete
