Oilers sign G Olivier Roy

The Edmonton Oilers announced the signing of goaltender Olivier Roy this afternoon. Roy is a famous junior prospect, having played for Canada at the world junior championships.

Roy's resume contains positives we don't see from lower end prospects but lacks the consistency we generally associate with elite level goalies as they graduate their junior careers.

Roy finished 4th this season in Q save percentage (.911) which is a slight improvement over last year's 5th place finish.

Here's the all-time list of goaltenders drafted by the Edmonton Oilers and their career games played. It's an easy list to move up quickly.

  1. Grant Fuhr 1981 (868gp)
  2. Andy Moog 1980 (713gp)
  3. Jussi Markkanen 2001 (128gp)
  4. Jeff Deslauriers 2002 (58gp)
  5. Devan Dubnyk (51gp)
  6. Mike Morrison 1998 (29gp)
  7. Darryl Reaugh 1984 (27gp)
  8. Joacquin Gage 1992 (23gp)
  9. Mike Greenlay 1986 (2gp)
  10. Mike Minard 1995 (1gp)
  11. Adam Hauser 1999 (1gp)
  12. Rob Polman-Tuin 1980
  13. Ian Wood 1982
  14. Chris Smith 1982
  15. Dave Roach 1983
  16. Brian Tessier 1985
  17. John Haley 1985
  18. Gavin Armstrong 1987
  19. Tom Cole 1988
  20. Greg Louder 1990
  21. Mike Power 1990
  22. Andrew Verner 1991
  23. Evgeny Belosheiken 1992
  24. Chris Wickenheiser 1994
  25. Jeremy Jablonski 1994
  26. John Hultberg 1996
  27. Patrick Dovigi 1997
  28. Alexander Fomitchev 1997
  29. Kristian Antila 1998
  30. Glenn Fisher 2002
  31. Bjorn Burling 2004
  32. Bryan Pitton 2006
  33. Olivier Roy 2009
  34. Tyler Bunz 2010
Roy is one of only three goalies under contract for next season (Dubnyk, Khabibulin). Bryan Pitton is rfa and the AHL tandem of Martin Gerber and Jeff Deslauriers are free agents after this season. He is 6.00, 180.
Here's the Redline draft day report:

"Roy has great athleticism and flexibility and is a tough-minded competitor who never gives up on a play. While he's fairly advanced technique-wise, the problem for this typical butterfly netminder is his penchant for constantly going down to the ice too early and swimming around the crease. He gets by with that style in the junior ranks, but at only 5-11 and 163 pounds, he's too small to cover the corners, and we suspect that pro shooters will pick him apart up high and take advantage of his habit of overcommitting."

  1. Hope it works out. Except for the top two, I have doubts about the Oilers' goaltender drafting history.

  2. Inconsistant, Smallish for a goalie, Susceptible up high...that's alot of red flags.

Long way to go for this guy. Might have to add another to the bottom of the list.

What ever happened to Bjorn Burling? He was supposed to be the Oilers Backstrom or Lunqvist.

  3. DSF: True. I don't remember much about most of thoe guys. Fomitchev played in St. Albert, Reaugh is quite famous post-career but there aren't many points of interest there.

  4. SK: Not like we were risking anything.

    4th night results:

    Zack Phillips 0 G 3 A 3 PTS +3

    Gabriel Landeskog 2 G 1 A 3 PTS +0

    Sean Couturier 0 G 2 A 2 PTS +3

    Jonathan Huberdeau 1 G 1 A 2 PTS +2

    David Musil 0 G 0 A 0 PTS +1

    Ryan Murphy 0 G 0 A 0 PTS -1

    (3rd game) Duncan Siemens 0 G 0 A 0 PTS -1

So far Phillips wins the night. All best performances come from the Q so far. Another rough night for Musil it seems. Kitchener's kids having some trouble as they are behind 3-1 to Plymouth.

  5. The Pseudo-Cowboy Douches just lost to the Ducks.

They barely have a prayer left.

  6. I remember meeting Ted Green at a Saint Albert Saints game and he was there scouting Fomitchev. That was the year they drafted him. I am sure the list of Junior A goalies that made the NHL is very short.

Omporas..thought it might have something to do with the Olympics. Glad to see Calgary flame-out

  7. No tender is quite alike, but Roy sure reminds me of Ronnie Tugnutt. Similar size, pedigree, style, and ability to battle back. Tracking goalies is lunacy, but I've always been a fan of the position and would love to see things click for the kid while he's a part of the Org.

  8. The scouting reports make me think strongly of Jaroslav Halak.

If he has the same work ethique, man that would be good for the org.

  9. Roy definitely looked as if he went down too early at the World Juniors.

But really most young goalies are wildcards. They go from good to bad and back again, from month to month, and year to year.

You just keep drafting them with low round picks until one sticks.

I do like the look of Bunz.

  10. Hmmm, and this is from yesterdays Dreger Report.

Interest is picking up in 28-year-old Swedish goaltender Viktor Fasth. A number of NHL teams have contacted Fasth's North American agent, Joe Resnick who says he's looking at all of the options that may lure the AIK star to North America.

Five teams are believed to be keenly interested in the free agent, including the Edmonton Oilers , although Resnick would not comment on the specific teams.

Perhaps their not entirely sold on Dubnyk being the number 1 guy in the near future.

  11. Speaking of goaltending... Detroit let in 10 against tonight. wow. Their backup was from the ECHL. I guess it could be worse. Last year, the Oilers used a backup from the Oil Kings who luckily didn't have to play.

As for Roy, I'm hoping for the best like any fan, but I've seen him bad a few too many times as well. Goalies are a strange breed though, so you never know...

visesman: Hey man, the Oilers are on tonight, put my head back in the vise.

  12. Perhaps their not entirely sold on Dubnyk being the number 1 guy in the near future.

Possibly, but I would think if they bring in another G that Bulin will be the one leaving.

It is nice to see the Oilers seem to be pursuing multiple options on mulitple fronts.

  13. Ducey: That would be the hope, but I don't know where Khabibulin is going to go. Unless the team's willing to bury him in the minors and just absorb the cap hit for the next two years. It's not like thier going to be spending to cap anytime soon.

  14. Marincin's PG cougars eliminated tonight in 4 game sweep.

    1+4 for 5 points in 4 games, minus4.

I am hoping he stays in the WHL next year. Seems he can't play consistently based on his second half, and according to an article at the Cult of Hockey, he isn't even playing the PK in the freaking junior leagues. Why rush him to the AHL if he isn't dominant yet? Kid just turned 19. Let him gain some weight and some confidence playing against his peers.

  15. isn't Roy a longshot because of his size?

  16. Many of you slight the Oilers on their goaltender drafting history but I am not so sure that the problem is not more of a development problem. When I look at JDD my heart cringes for the young man as I feel his development was a total travesty by the Oilers. They must improve in this aspect of their game. We can only H.O.P.E. that the future in OK is better.
