Avalanche at Oilers, G72 10-11

The Edmonton Oilers 10-11 will be remembered for two things: losing hockey games and rookies. The list is already amazing, with Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and Magnus Pääjärvi leading the way. The secondary group includes Devan Dubnyk, Linus Omark and Jeff Petry--that's a helluva kicker and one day we may think of the "big 3" as the four horsemen if Petry or Dubnyk can play at a high level over a long period.

The "cup of coffee" brigade includes Ryan O'Marra, Shawn Belle (since traded), Alex Plante and the two new hires: Teemu Hartikainen and Chris Vande Velde.

Teemu Hartikainen (top photo) enjoyed an incredible amount of ice time in his NHL debut: 7:44 at even strength and 7:35 on the powerplay. Seriously. Incredibly, he earned it, working hard in puck pursuit and looking like he belonged when Edmonton was applying pressure. Those AHL nights have done him some good and the Oilers would appear to have a strong LW candidate on the farm.

Chris Vande Velde matched Hartikainen at evens (7:19) but did not enjoy PP time. He did impress in limited exposure on the faceoff dot: 75% in 4 sorties. I know, it's a small sample size but it is a strength for this player and perhaps gives him an edge in next fall's training camp.

The long AHL season gave these two players the opportunity to refine their skills. I think players like JF Jacques and Colin Fraser may get passed like a house on the side of the road in the fall. Oklahoma City's graduates appear to have learned their lessons well.
--

If the Oilers select Adam Larsson, I think we might see Taylor Hall at center in the fall. It makes all kinds of sense and his FO percentage (40%) trails Gagner, Cogliano and Fraser by mere percentage points. Placing Hall at center gives the team a more balanced look:
  • C: Hall, Gagner, Horcoff, Cogliano
  • L: Pääjärvi, Omark, Jones, Hartikainen
  • R: Hemsky, Eberle, Reddox, Brule
That race for 2line LW should be interesting in the fall, the organization might want to try Hartikainen on a skill line to see what happens. Hartikainen's skill set is a rare item on this roster, so elevated status on the depth chart and PP time are certainly possible in 11-12. Maybe he'll cure the Calder curse.
--

The Oilers are almost certain to buy out Sheldon Souray this summer, and I think some NHL contracts may spend the 11-12 season in the minors. Candidates include Colin Fraser and Nikolai Khabibulin. NK's established level of ability has eroded so much that his .891 SP ranks 70th of 84 NHL goalies in 10-11. Devan Dubnyk ranks in a tie for 28th in SP among goalies who qualify (.913), he's tied with Dwayne Roloson. Corey Crawford, he of the .915SP on a far superior team, is getting strong Calder consideration this season.
--

The RFA list is an interesting one this summer. Last summer, this is how Steve Tambellini managed the restricted free agents:
  1. Sam Gagner: signed a 2-year deal at $2.275M per season.
  2. Gilbert Brule: signed a 2-year deal at $1.85M per season.
  3. Andrew Cogliano: signed a 1-year deal at $1M.
  4. Jeff Deslauriers: signed a 1-year deal at $1,050,000 per season and spent the year in the minors. He is UFA this summer, so last year's contract made the decision on this player.
  5. Devan Dubnyk: signed a 2-year deal at $800k per season.
  6. JF Jacqes: signed a 1-year deal at $615,000
  7. Theo Peckham: signed a 1-year deal at $550k.
  8. Marc Pouliot: set him free.
  9. Ryan Potulny: set him free.
I have no real objections to these moves, although I remain firmly in Marc Pouliot's camp it was probably time for him to find another organization.

Can he do the same kind of things this summer? RFA's are Andrew Cogliano, JF Jacques, Liam Reddox, Ladislav Smid, and Theo Peckham at the NHL level. Ryan O'Marra, Taylor Chorney, Zack Stortini, Matt Marquardt, Kevin Montgomery, Bryan Pitton and Jordan Bendfeld are the minor league RFA's.

  1. Great article as always LT. Hoping Hartikainen has another strong game tonight, but not strong enough for us to end our current losing streak.

    Come on, Larson!

  2. although I remain firmly in Marc Pouliot's camp

C'mon LT, even his agent has given up on him :-)

I think they will keep all their NHL RFA's - even JFJ. As for their minor league RFA's Ryan O'Marra, Taylor Chorney, & Kevin Montgomery will likely get new contracts. Bryan Pitton, Jordan Bendfeld, Zack Stortini, Matt Marquardt will get canned.

The most interesting thing to me will be which of the draftees gets signed: Lander, Hamilton, Roy will sign for sure. I doubt they will let Abney go. I would hope they let the rest play their 20 yr old seasons.

  3. If Teemu can bring anything the last 10 games, then there's no way they bring back JFJ.

They are already looking at a contract crunch (with the probable signings of Hamilton, Roy, Lander, Pitlick etc.) and if there is ANY hope of bringing in some actual NHL players, then they cannot waste contracts on guys like JFJ

  4. Crap...Wrote a brilliant post on why it should be Hemsky, not Hall who moves to center. Trust me, it was terrific with stats and stuff but now it's gone.

So are we all in agreement then?

    ReplyDelete
  5. I look at that left wing with Hall at center and think it would be nice if we could find a player with some size that would be capable of playing in a power-vs-power role with Horcoff and Hemsky and maybe giving us 30G/30A. That would round out the top nine rather nicely.

Any idea where we can get one of those?

  6. how about 18-25 overall in the draft this year? ;)

Yeah, but that guy MIGHT be ready in 3-4 years. I'd prefer some immediate help.

  8. yeah, no argument from me. You're not going to replace Penner's production/role/size anytime soon.

  9. I wanted to stop reading after that part about the Oilers making good sense but I decided to trudge on.

This compares to the Titanic season of '07 and I didn't think anything could be that bad because it was the first time the scales were ripped from the eyes of those who would allow it.

but this is coming close because who'd bet we're not at least one more year away from playoffs.

and nothing ever changes except for the fact that Lowe has another job title.

They are at 46 contracts right now. They can dump 11 (Gerber, Bendfeld, Pitton, Petroit, Stewart, Ondrus, Marquart, Stortini, JDD, Souray, Strudwick) pretty easy and they would be down to 35. They only need to sign Abney, Lander and Roy. I am not sure on Hesketh because we don't even know where he is playing.

On top of that they will need a goalie in OKL to go with Roy.

So that puts them 46-11+4 = 39 contracts before they even look at turfing a Smac or JFJ. They will still need a few hired guns in OKL like Moran but as the prospects start to take the place of AAAA players, their contract situation should be fine.

In fact, I think they should aggressively try and sign a college senior C with some size and faceoff ability.

    1. Landeskog
    2. RNH

Talk about putting the call-ups in a position to succeed.

  15. spOILer: In the spirit of shooting the messenger, WTF?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Just out of interest, didn't MacIntyre used to play defence?

If so, why not stick him in a position he can't be any worse than he is already? Defencemen don't really have to skate far, when they knock people over like Derien Hatcher etc.

    Just trying to help out.

  17. If so, why not stick him in a position he can't be any worse than he is already? Defencemen don't really have to skate far, when they knock people over like Derien Hatcher etc.

Even your 6th defenceman usually plays 10-12 minutes a game. That seems like a bad idea.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Well I think it was pretty obvious Couturier was gonna drop, just a question of how far. And Huberdeau we have said all along should be in the convo. It is Hamilton that is most interesting, I think. If he's that close to Larsson, he will be a possibility come draft day especially if Avs take Larsson ahead of us. Tambellini is scouting him and Strome this weekend, I believe.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Starting Khabibulin tonight is indicative of an obvious tank-job.

Problem with sending Khabibulin to the minors next year is two-fold.

    1. He's over 35 - he'd count on the cap regardless, sans $100,000. Or he retires, and counts in full to the cap hit.
    2. Management may design another tank-job season next year. Having Khabibulin would assist in that.

Are the buy-out rules the same for players signed to contracts who are over 35?

    ReplyDelete
  20. MacIntyre-VandeVelde-Strudwick

A line that inpires *fearyo* in opposition goaltenders.

Think Billy...er, Brian Elliot is probably dancing a jig over that fearsome trio steaming down the ice.

  21. Are the buy-out rules the same for players signed to contracts who are over 35?

You can spread the actual dollars, but zero relief on the cap hit.

Better option would be to permanently IR him, or hope he fucks back off to Russia rather than serve any jail time.

Doubt he does that. His daughter and family are well settled in Phoenix. Facebook Sasha Khabibulin. Those Russian women...

On another note, went to Oil Kings game last night to scout Ryan Nugent Hopkins. Saw him good. Appears to be a smart, two way player. Beautiful vision on the powerplay. Also scored an even-strength goal with a hard, accurate quick shot from the top of the slot.

  23. The Oil are having a season ticket holder event tomorrow at Rexall.

11:00am – 12:30pm: Photo Stations with Oilers players

12:45pm – 1:30pm: Hot Stove hosted by Jack Michaels and Allan Watt featuring Patrick LaForge and Steve Tambellini

1:30pm – 2:30pm: Oilers Practice hosted by Tom Renney

I've got two tickets, but I can't make it. Anybody interested in going?

I went to the event last year and you were basically able to ask The Puppet anything you wanted. Some old guy went off on Laforge because an air conditioning duct was blowing cold air on his seat all the time. Maybe someone wants to go and ask actual hockey questions? Maybe Dennis can catch a flight out here and ask a few questions?

    ReplyDelete
  24. RiderGuy: I will take those tickets if you don't want them?

  30. So this year, being a goalie who's well below league average but signed to an expensive, inescapable contract gets you the staring job on the Oilers, but next year it puts you in the AHL? What's changed?

I'm fine with people talking about what the Oilers *should* do; I just wish they wouldn't frame those things as predictions.

As I said at The Site That Shall Not Be Named or Even Read Except When Willis or LT is Posting, I'd put money on next year's opening night roster being essentially identical to the current roster, minus departed UFAs, plus players returned from injury, plus some not-ready-for-prime-time rookies. It's The Plan.

You've yet much to learn, Mepashoo.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Go watch a practice?
    No way. Really?
    Aren't he games painful enough?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Only makes sense to play Khabby every game now the rest of the year. We keep losing and DD doesn't get thrown out behind an AHL team to face desperate-to-make-the-playoffs NHL teams.

And the best part is that it would significantly increase the odds of Khabby suffering a career-ending injury.

If only the Bolts and MAB were coming to town.

    ReplyDelete
  33. "Some old guy went off on Laforge because an air conditioning duct was blowing cold air on his seat all the time. Maybe someone wants to go and ask actual hockey questions? ""

Chuckling at this. I bet he was planted by the Oilers to emphasize this type of problem would not be an issue in a nice new arena.

  42. Sting's hit, "If You Love Somebody," should be the theme song for the Oilers summer. The refrain, "feel free to set them free," should apply to many former prospects like Jacques and Fraser.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Rider Guy:

Did you send in your question for the Hot Stove?

Mine basically was about the leftover "cap space" that Katz promised he would spend to.

    Where is it going?

    Top shelf ST guys?
    New arena top up?
Save until we need that "one guy" to win the cup?
Rebate for the suffering season ticket holders? Ha!

I doubt it will be one of the questions picked to answer.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh, boy, we get Weeks and Lee tonight on CBC.

The only thing worse than watching the Oilers lose on CBC is listening to Weeks & Lee describing the action.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Art - The practices are much easier to watch then the games, they have only lost 4 practices all year.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Oilers sign captain of Maine, Tanner House to 2 year deal. 6'1 195 lbs forward. Fourth on the club in points. Apparently a strong two way player.

Like how they're signing college FAs.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I wonder how many waiver pick ups ever scored 30 goals.

Probably one of the best looking pickups ever.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Another team captain, and this time a Mike Peca-esque player. Is this the Anton Lander insurance signing?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Signing guys with big brains and C's on their jerseys sounds like a good plan.

As per Oilers' site "He won the Gladiator Hockey Best Defensive Forward in Hockey East with a +13 in league play, which ranked 10th among conference skaters."

    ReplyDelete
  50. Magisterrex - they probably saw a lot of him because Dee plays for Maine I believe.

All it costs is a bit of cash to pick these guys up. I'll give Tambo credit here, guy may bust but it doesn't hurt to sign him.

I think it also speaks to the fact that they're trying to get guys who will show up ready to play every night.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Watching the last of the Leaf-Bruin game, they were talking about how quiet Kaberle's been in his return to the ACC. Then they said tongue in cheek that everyone who comes back to Edmonton scores, so this is odd.

I got a good chuckle out of that. I also love the college FA signings, hope they keep it up and find a gem or two.

  52. Oops, hit send too quick.

Good to see, I can't stand dogfuckers like Nilsson, Lupul and O'Sullivan. Talent but no heart or drive is useless.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Talent but no heart or drive is useless.

Totally agree. Guys who take every other shift off need to be sent to a new home.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I don't know if I'd lump Nilsson in with Lupul. Bastard could go balls out, diving to break up that play in the neutral zone, and getting stuck on the ice for that last face-off and beaming after helping clear the zone and going on about how it felt like scoring a goal.

That's what's so messed up about him. Guy would go into those greasy areas and had talent to burn, but he seemed to just...lose interest. I always liked him, followed him since he was drafted, and thought he'd make it.

I still think there's a player in there. He's certainly no Schremp or Lupul IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Colin McDonald with the hat trick in a 5-1 win for OKC last night. Good to hear. If I'm reading the AHL standings correctly the Barons sit in a playoff spot today, the website shows them ahead of the Chicago Wolves though both have 79 PTS in 69 GP.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Billy Moores with an interesting quote while commenting on his new Job Title at the Oilers' site:

"What prompted the change is that it became apparent that you can't buy a team," Moores said. "You can't make those changes quickly and the free agent market wasn't working out. We were getting some of the guys we wanted, but not the real top-end guys. It become more and more apparent that you have to develop your own players and that you have to have a system to develop them. That was the impetus of Steve Tambellini and Kevin Lowe. That became part of their organizational philosophy."

    ReplyDelete
  57. R - but that's exactly why I lump them together. Nilsson had the talent and after a game or two as a scratch he'd come in and be terrific for six or seven games.

And then nothing for weeks - he'd get comfortable or caught up chasing tail I guess.

He may still figure it out - the talent is there for sure.

I wouldn't lump Schremp with those guys, he's just not very good.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Black Dog: Kinda harsh on Nilsson.

He's been in the doghouse for 2 straight seasons, and to me when he came in to TC at season 3, he did all the right things, was in shape, played well, but you could see that did nothing.

As a player you begin to lose hope what you do to please the coach will do anything at all.

That or Robert might not like hockey that much.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think Nilsson likes hockey. Just not as much as booze and women.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Colin McDonald with another goal tonight, he's one off the AHL lead in that category.

  61. Play good hockey in the best league in the world and you can have your pick of both. Robert would rather not work than hard.

  74. Lordie, I can't wait till MPS realizes how good he really is.

Considering his size, and the relatively hulking defenceman on his back, Omark had absolutely no business coming off the boards with the puck the way he did there.

Great job by the wiley Russian veteran to ensure his team gets a better chance at 1st overall. Also when Weekes said "Steve MacIntyre's line..." I nearly burst out laughing, then got really sad.

    ReplyDelete

  81. Quick thoughts/questions on Couturier's slide in the rankings* since the new year.

Couturier's RLR ranks this season, month by month have been:
    Sep-1
    Oct-1
    Nov-1
    Dec-1
    Jan-3
    Feb-4
    Mar-8

Here are his stats this year, split at the new year when he started to drop:

    Sept2010-Dec2010:
    32GP, 16G, 36A for 52pts, +22 (1.63 PointsPerGame)

    Jan2011-present:
    25GP, 20G, 23A for 43pts, +32 (1.72 PointsPerGame)

What do we make of this? Other players getting way better?
Scouts see less potential for improvement, long term, in Couturier than thought earlier in the season?

Assuming that the oilers win the lottery and Ottawa picks third, would anyone trade the first overall for ottawas pick plus nashvilles and something else, then try to parlay those picks into a something in the top 8?

    ReplyDelete
  85. speeds: Jonathan Willis made a great point when I was talking to him today about Redline. Every year they have some wonky ranking for one player and this year it's Couturier.

There's no way he goes 8th. I still think he could go #1.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Speeds - reading the comments in the latest I think a few of these guys, like Huberdeau or whatever his name is, have really taken off while the feeling is that SC has kind of stagnated. I think he has been in the spotlight for a while so there is some nitpicking. And I think his game doesn't have that wow factor.

Plus he is a big guy so he takes a hit for not being physical and because some scouts think he is doing well because of his size.

Interesting was the note that there are 8 or 9 guys now and that if you talked to ten scouts they'd rank them all differently.

    ReplyDelete

  89. dooz:

Who knows what we'll see for trades, but say EDM ends up picking 1OV or 2OV after the draft lottery.

Depending who they like, is it possible they trade down from 1 to 4, pick up a 2nd, and then use LA's 1st, the EDM 2nd, and the 2nd acquired in the trade down to move up? Yeah, I could see that possibly happening.

Instead of picking 1, ~22, 31, maneuvering around to convert those picks into 4 and ~12?

    ReplyDelete
  90. LT:

I don't think Redline necessarily thinks he'll go 8th either - they are just giving their ranking, they aren't projecting where they expect guys to be taken.

I'm not saying there is no reason behind Couturier's slide, but I can't help but wonder if it isn't, at least partially, an overreaction to him not dominating at the WJHC. You'd like to think that doesn't play into it, and maybe it doesn't and it's just coincidental timing, but that's kinda when the talk started about him sliding.

  91. Woodlief normally does a couple on line chats before the draft, I'm sure someone will ask him where he sees Khokhlachev going and I'd be somewhat surprised if he said he expects Khokhlachev to go in the top 10, even though that's where RLR ranks him.

  92. speeds: I've been looking for some flaws in the math, because honestly Couturier looks really good (big C with terrific skills, size and 2-way ability).

And he's not slow slow (if you know what I mean). He's not Jack Valiquette.

  93. BD:

Yeah, I think that probably covers it.

I wonder if he's unfairly penalized for being "quiet" excellent instead of "flashy/dynamic" excellent.

Is there a legitimate concern that Couturier is getting underrated because his game is a bit more plain, but extremely effective, while others might look flashy, having more interesting tools, but don't get the results SC does? Or, is that lack of a dynamic dimension a legitimate concern for Couturier, in that he won't be able to excel at the next level without that dynamic nature to his game?

  94. I know that was a five bell chance, but its just automatic now: Move Rekhab laterally and there's enough room for Dustin Penner and his breakfast to fit through the 5 hole.

The legs aren't with him anymore. Opposing teams are making it look easy.

DD is sick right? Otherwise I'm sure he'd get the start.

  95. Nugent Hopkins with 2 goals already in a game which is in progress.

  96. 1-0 Anaheim over the Kings-10 min to go in the 2nd.

  97. Jimmy Vandermeer is sleepwalking through this game.

Typical quote from "Weak"es on the fancy between the legs shot by Eberle: "if Elliot wasn't sharp there that could have been trouble"

Uh, Kevin, he missed the net...

  98. With RNH I believe it's his 2nd half numbers which have really gripped him above Couturier.

Believe it or not, he got booed by the Oil Kings faithful when he was announced as one of the three stars last night.

  99. Giroux shoots from anywhere - often harmless shots - POS like. One of the reasons he hasn't had a NHL career?

  100. Kurtis Foster - you can't stop him, you can only hope to contain him.

  101. Omark...oh my.

nogic: what Oilers management uses instead of logic

    ReplyDelete
  102. I know its not saying much, but Omark is the best Oiler below the opposition red line at this point in the season.

Love watching this guy play hockey

    ReplyDelete
  103. If Omark had more breakaway speed and a better shot he'd be Marty St Louis light.

    ReplyDelete
  104. In honour of that Weekes comparison to the Sedins in his puck possession, I shall henceforth refer to Omark as the 'little pisscutter'.

    ReplyDelete
  105. If Omark had JFJ's size, he'd be a bonafide star, Forsberg light.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I think if they remain team mates Omark and Hemsky might benefit from a mutual support group.

Omark: "I just want someone who can do something, ANYTHING with all those passes I mak...I just..."

Hemsky: "It's okay Linus, I understand; let it all out."

  108. Let's say we pass the Avs and end up drawing the 3rd pick. Is there any chance whatsoever that we'd trade that and LA's pick for the first overall?

No team is going to make a deal like that when there's a cluster of debate around the top 4. If we want an additional first from trading the 1st overall, we aren't getting a lottery pick in the package.

  109. Did anyone else hear the "poor Edmonton..." caught on mic as they were transitioning to commercial?

    Indeed.

Like the Magnus move - great stretch by elliot.

  111. mportant game here by the Oilers. They went a long way to locking up a top 2 pick there =).

I like how Weekes keeps touting the goalies and how they've controlled the game.

Yeah, we all know it's 2 of the worst goalies in the league that kept this game close, not the fact that two horrible teams met.

Commonfan13, I don't know if the Oil would trade down and still get their man. I mean if they really want Larsson, he's not going to be there 3rd. If they're picking 2nd though, and the guy they want goes 1st, and they want Landeskog, then I can see it happening, maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Hopefully this locks up 1st overall for us. In Stu we trust.

    ReplyDelete
  113. COL is now 3 wins up on the Oilers. I don't see the Oilers winning 3 or their last 10, do you?

    ReplyDelete
  114. uni,

I just don't see why the team picking 3rd would give up anything to move up one pick this year though.

If that scenario happened, I think they'd just have to suck it up and pick Landeskog 2nd if that's who they want.

  115. I don't know, I think the CBC desk is going a bit far running down Linus. It's supposed to be entertainment, there's fans to please, two last place teams, no harm done.

Too often the league and media go to far with this code and earn your stripes line.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Brian Elliott: Two wins since Boxing Day, both in Edmonton, with the two worst teams in the league. Er, the second and third worst teams in the league.

    ReplyDelete
  117. The Anderson trade makes sense. Colorado obviously realized they weren't ready to compete yet, and had gotten 'good' too fast.

Bringing in Elliot has ensured them a lottery pick with one simple roster move without making it obvious.

What puts this at genius level is the second part of the deal, sending Anderson to Ottawa all but guarantees them 2nd overall.

  118. Did Ryan Jones just say that Jason Strudwick "likes to pull it off where ever he can" on national television?

  119. Courturier (and Larsson to a lesser degree) are suffering from the recency effect.

  120. I caught the first period and logged it for future reference and then tuned out until After Hours because quite frankly that's the only thing worth watching when the Oilers are the late HNIC game.

Though to be fair AH is a really good show because you get to see personality from a group where there usually us none.

Anyway, Hrudey is a mimbo and Healy is a goddamn stupe and what have they done to HNIC? Milbury's a cornerstone for fucksakes and that's a bad start.

Bring back Strachan. Make sure Lebrun's there all night.

Eric Francis is on the hot stove panel.

    Eric Fucking Francis.

Duthie tries to hard and Barnaby is beyond stupid but CBC's supposed to be the flagship station but TSN kicks it's ass.

It's like the NBA where ABC has the finals but there's no goddamn way you'd watch their talent over Kenny and Barkley on TNT.
