This is Tom Lysiak. He played for a pretty good Atlanta Flames club before being dealt to Chicago. The Flames--unlike the Thrashers--had an excellent expansion GM (Cliff Fletcher) and improved quickly. The Flames made the playoffs in 73-74, their 2nd season in the bigs. They made the playoffs seven times in their 9 seasons in the south.
Outstanding.
The current Thrashers had no Fletcher, but did get a ton of top draft picks to build around. Dany Heatley, Ilya Kovalchuk, Braydon Coburn, Zach Bogosian, Evander Kane. Lordy.
It hasn't worked and in fact the Thrashers have been as pitiful as the Oakland Seals when it comes to making the post-season. Worse really; the Seals made the playoffs in years 2 and 3, while the Thrashers have made it to the second season only once (2007, and they had to kill their future to do it).
I think Rick Dudley and Craig Ramsay will make a difference, but it's not certain to be in Atlanta. The ownership of the club is another Bettman headache and there's a real chance Atlanta loses its second NHL team before the middle of this decade. Crazy.
--
The Oilers have played extremely well over the last two games and it's been longer than that for solid 5x5 play. If they get the goaltending and these kids at F continue to do impressive things with the puck then another win is possible today.
I'll be interested to see how coach Renney matches up against Roger Neilson pupil Craig Ramsay. If Evander Kane is out against the Jacques line all day then we'll know how it is going.

The second edition of Nation Radio goes today at noon. It'll be a pre-game show on some level but there will also be a couple of solid guests. The email is nationradio@theteam1260.com and I hope you can tune in.
EDIT TO ADD: Souray on waivers. Jonathan Willis has the latest at ON.
Taking the three year old to the game today. Hopefully it's entertaining enough to keep him there for the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteSchitzo: I took my son at 5 and was glad I brought some hot wheels. Just saying.:-)
ReplyDeleteI remember my first Oiler game at 5. Tikanen knocked a Flyer into the oilers bench and they wouldn't let him out. Anyone know when that was, I was looking for highlights of it but I couldnt find it on youtube.
ReplyDeleteI helped start the wave. Best memory of my young life. Have fun.
Lets start a rumour that Bogosian only got a one-way ticket for the game today.
Where can you find the podcast version of your radio show LT? I am normally busy on Saturdays and won't be able to hear it again. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteBCB: We're working on it. Eventually, they'll all be available at Oilers Nation. I think it should be soon.
ReplyDeleteTom Lysiak great player. He's from my home town, played hockey with my uncle. It's funny his name was pronounced layshuk till the nhl announcers changed it. Anyhoo great blog LT been lurking for years, always great reads and the comments are never dull. Thanks and keep up the great writing.
ReplyDeleteLT keeps teasing us by hosting the show during game times and then not archiving it. He is punishing people not listening live
ReplyDeleteI love that old Flames crest. Used to draw it all over binders, notebooks etc (I was, and remain to this day, a doodler). Who knew back then that the Flames would become the hated arch enemy?
ReplyDeleteAnd not getting Bengt-Ake really pissed me off back in the day.
I was beside myself when it happened. The girl I was dating at the time sort of told me to stop ranting about Bengt but I couldn't do it. :-)
ReplyDeleteProbably worked out for the best.
Unless my wife is reading this and then it CERTAINLY worked out for the best.
ReplyDelete:-)
for you, maybe...
ReplyDeleteThat COL-STL deal is pretty bizarre with Stewart and Johnson switching teams. I would not have guessed either player was available. Shattenkirk too for that matter. There are all kinds of deals out there to be had.
ReplyDeleteGood buddy is driving up with his wife from Calgary this morning.
ReplyDeleteThe girls will set up for my daughter's 2nd birthday party (that goes tomorrow), and us boys will go to the hockey game and drink beer.
Excellent division of labour. I am a manager you know.
The Oiler can make it 3 in a row. Thrashers just did what the Blues did, trade their tough minute center with nothing coming back to fill that hole.
Sounds like they have Vish/3.0 disease in STL and ATL.
Jay McClement and Erik Johnson is pretty much exactly what the Oilers need right now. Not sure the Oilers would have what STL was looking for, but damn those two would help fill the holes in a big way.
I expect the Oilers to do very well 5v5 today, hopefully they survive the ST.
Anyone hear why they pulled 23 off of 5v4? There was some excellent player and puck movement with him back on the blue. Looked stagnant again last game.
Nick Kypreos has the Oilers putting Souray on re-entry waivers this morning.
ReplyDeleteAs per his twitter.
Whoever wrote that LT wife line made me laugh, so I owe you a beer. Unless it was "Steve Smith."
ReplyDelete:-)
Bengt, the Gretzky rookie thing... I had a good hate-on for the NHL back then.
ReplyDeleteWG
Wasn't there only two PPs last game? It might just be that, or given the firewagon hockey, it might have been a punishment for something 23 did at EVs. He was cruisin the opp blue on that stretchie from 91. If he was doing that all the time, Renney might have been displeased.
@LT
ReplyDeleteI usually get blame so just this once I'll see what taking credit is all about.
:D
I'm Kypreos is right I put $ that the Rags pick him up.
ReplyDeleteAh, C Simpson. My wife laughed when she read it too, so you're 2 for 2 at our house.
ReplyDeleteIf the put him on waivers and isn't taken? That would be one bad day at Black Rock for Souray.
ReplyDeleteSome of these deals going around are beyond strange. I'm not sure I want to buy or sell right now, as it changes every deal that comes in. Not sure dithers moves fast enough to capitalize on some of this.
ReplyDeleteCan anyone explain that Anderson for Elliot deal at all?
chartleys
-As per Bob McKenzie tweet:
ReplyDeleteEDM realizes dmen are hot commodity right now and hoping someone will see Souray as good value. A claim has not been pre-arranged, I am told
The comedy if he clears would be world class.
I think Anderson was unhappy in Colorado. I have no idea why but he had asked for a personal leave.
ReplyDeleteBringing Souray up now seems like such a waste. You would think they would be committed to dealing him for anything in the summer.
ReplyDeleteI can't fathom the Elliott for Anderson deal either. Why bother?
It wouldn't make a lot of sense to make a deal for Souray and THEN put him on waivers. I mean if you're the team trading with the Oilers.
ReplyDeleteThe only way EDM gets a player in return is if the claiming team wants to dump a salary the Oilers like--similar to Vandermeer.
jmo.
In regards to Souray on waivers:
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it make more sense to wait til AFTER the trade deadline (or closer to it)? If someone claims him now, that's one less team that needs to acquire a Dman at the deadline.
To me, makes more sense to move JVM/Foster/Smid first (if possible), THEN put souray on waivers.
If our big move this deadline ends up being paying half Souray's contract with nothing in return, one could not help but laugh.
ReplyDeleteMaybe v3.0 hopes Souray clears so that he can bring him back to the big club for 1st D-pairing minutes and a long swing into the second season...
ReplyDeleteThat COL-STL deal is pretty bizarre with Stewart and Johnson switching teams.
ReplyDeleteYeah, COL gets what could be a top 10 pick as well. But I like the deal for St Louis. Shattenkirk replaces Johnson and Stewart is an upgrade on McLement.
Its rare for a team to give up on #1 overall pick so fast.
Cautionary tale on taking a Dman so high?
itseaf makes a great point. This timing shows they are far too obsessed with getting rid of Souray at all costs.
ReplyDeleteCall them Ishmael trying to dump their white whale.
The biggest concern is that whoever takes Souray might have taken Foster in a trade.
ReplyDeleteAt least we can all rest assured that whatever Vish and the Action Team(TM) are planning over at Rexall Place, it's for the benefit of both fans and the organisation in general.
ReplyDeleteHow many NHL fans can say that?
@ Ducey
ReplyDeleteif this season Stl loius has a top 10 selection, then the pick gets deferred to next year and they will receive the 2nd round pick next year
Ducey
ReplyDeleteStewart is a much better offensive player than McClement, but they lose their tough minute shutdown center with no replacement. Stewart's a winger.
This is a sell job by the Blues. It doesn't make them a better team. Me thinks their coach is gone soon
The must have come to the conclusion that they were not going to be able to trade him in the summer.
ReplyDeleteMakes sense to get rid of him now then.
Doesn't let Vish or v3.0 off the hook for this schmoozle though.
Handled poorly from the time Vish and Nichols paniced at he backlash over the Smyth deal and threw his $$$ at Souray to try to placate season ticket holders.
It just went downhill from there.
Souray overplayed his hand in trying the Pronger route to put pressure on v3.0 to trade him. Sucks to find out no one would take you for free.
Stewart is an upgrade on McLement.
ReplyDeleteReally depends on what the job is.
That's like saying an old NovaSS with a big block engine is an upgrade on a 1/2 ton.
On the surface that's true, but if the job is hauling dirt, then the Nova is 2nd place.
McClement is one of the best (and cheapest) tough minute centers in the league.
I like Stewart a lot, but Avs could afford to get rid of him to upgrade the D and C.
Avs win this deal going away.
@ WG
ReplyDeletecompletely agree
It's equally possible that Souray getting claimed drives up the price of the other D. Any team that had calling Edmonton and asking for Souray to be put on reentry waivers as a backup plan if they didn't like the price of D on the trade market, would be forced to pay what the market was charging for depth on D.
ReplyDeleteIt really is a good gamble. Not only did a bunch of D come off the market yesterday, but I don't think Montreal haven't announced had badly James Wisniewski is hurt, giving any team considering making a claim at some point another reason to hink that he might not be available if they don't claim him now.
Just saw an interview on the weather channel with PK Subban on the game tomorrow and weather concerns, he was wearing an Expos ball cap...too cool.
ReplyDeleteHmm... Didn't I see someone post within the last week about Souray being out of games with a hand injury? Maybe I'm misremembering....
ReplyDeleteIt looks like he hasn't played the last couple of games....
ReplyDeleteFrom Hershey Bears Hockey Site blog - Yesterday...
ReplyDeleteAt the same time though Sheldon Souray did not make the trip to Rochester and is out with an upper body injury. No word on what exactly that is but he won't play tonight for sure.
Schitzo - load up the mobile device with a couple games and you're good to go. Took my 6 year old daughter last Saturday, gave her the iPhone, some popcorn and an apple juice and she didn't make a peep for 2 1/2 hours. Plus the wife is thrilled that you're spending quality time with the kid.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome.
RT via Willis twitter..
ReplyDeleteOilers told Souray few days ago that he will be on waivers.
Maybe his injury was a precautionary measure?
Some puzzling deals going on for sure. ST doesn't have the nards to pull actual hockey trades off.
ReplyDeleteFor the record, I don't think Penner or Hemsky go anywhere. ST can and will push the decisions on these guys off unitl the decision is made for him. Its the ST way.
Deadline deals next year after another year of suckage.
Go Oilers
Whoever wrote that LT wife line made me laugh, so I owe you a beer. Unless it was "Steve Smith."
ReplyDeleteAfraid not - I just read it out loud to my girlfriend, and followed it with "I don't know if it was actually his wife, but I choose to believe that it was."
I think you owe me a beer anyway, though.
LT: i was pleased that you asked Hughson about the Expos but I was less than pleased with his response.
ReplyDeleteOilers told Souray few days ago that he will be on waivers.
ReplyDeleteOh great, NOW they're on speaking terms.
If I was Burke, I would totally grab Souray.
ReplyDeleteHe's worth the gamble @ 2.2 mil for one season and likely at least gives you an additional 2nd rounder at next years deadline.
Plus it has a very real possibility of making Lowe and Co look very stupid. I would find that too hard to pass up.
Also, I wrote you a nice email about Souray and Smid:)
ReplyDelete"Plus it has the very real possibility of making Lowe and Co look very stupid".
ReplyDeleteAnyone managing a team goes from the finals to 30th place needs no help in this department.
For sure but Burke doesn't seem the type who wouldn't relish in constantly rubbing salt into old wounds of an enemy.
ReplyDeleteIf Souray plays well (last year of contract with some pretty hard b**& slaps to the confidence - no question on motivation). Burke can constantly bring it up in media scrums.
You could do a lot worse for 2.7 mil cap hit defenseman. Seems like a reasonable gamble to take (especially seeing as you just sent Kaberle packing).
Souray, Colburne, 24 ish pick and a conditional next year.
Pretty solid (at least that is how I would be selling it).
Tencer tweet...
ReplyDeleteNashville continues to scout the Oilers...who do they like? Hearing Smid's name over and over.
Things that make you go hmmmm...
Speaking of Burke, why wouldn't he take a shot at Souray at those prices?
ReplyDeletehey, I don't like Souray but he's a good gamble at this money, IMO.
The only thing we have going for us as Oilers fans in regard to 27/83 deals is we know Lowe's puppet doesn't like making big deals. Still, I won't rest until about 8pm NST on the 28th.
Also, I don't think either of them should be moved unless A: you're certain they won't resign and/or B: the offer is out of this world.
Hmm...Smid for Ryan Ellis? Roman Josi? Blake Geoffrion?
ReplyDeleteWtf? Mcclement seriously? His value is probably a 2nd round pick tops. Guys like him get traded around all the time
ReplyDeleteSince when 22 years old PF pacing for 70 points on a complete year became garbage?
STL absolutely SCREWED Colorado on that one.
Stewarts and Shattenkirk's REL Corsi is way better than EJ's and Mcclements (which is near last)
WG: Chris Stewart actually has more stiff competition then Jay Mcclement and is doing better.
ReplyDeleteThe Souray thing really makes no sense with the information we have.
ReplyDeleteNashville is very interesting... but what would they be looking for? I can't see us freeing them from the Dumont contract.
This excerpt stolen from Spectors:
AJC.COM: Chris Vivlamore reports Atlanta Thrashers GM Rick Dudley said he’s not actively looking to trade promising defenseman Zach Bogosian and doesn’t expect to trade him.
Oh well.
It takes a lot of Dmen ~310 games to find their offensive potential.
ReplyDelete5 has a great shot and great vision and he was acquired for Pronger so you know he's good.
Bogosian numbers:
ReplyDeleteBasic: Zach Bogosian D 48 4 7 11 21 -17
Underlying:
Qual Comp: 0,025 (1st D, but Oduya, Enstrom and Byfuglien are all so near it's a crapshoot)
Qual Team: -0,179 (5th) (Johnny Oduya)
REL Corsi: -12,3 (Worst)
Corsi ON: -15,0 (Worst)
GFON/60: 1,65
GAON/60: 2,86
Projecting worse than 2 previous seasons.
Injury History: Broken Leg
Being attracted by shiny rocks much?
spOILer: No surprise on Atl and Bogosian. Just means Dudley has not been offered anything that has overwhelmed him...yet.
ReplyDeleteRe: Souray, I'm interested to see if this is just a fishing expedition by 3.0 or if he actually has something. Listening to LT's show and he just said teams may have until Monday since it's the weekend to make a decision on Souray. I think we'll know something shortly and this will be another tell on Oiler management.
Dennis, slow and steady wins the race. The only question is whether Smid will be ready in 4-6 yrs.
ReplyDeleteWould Nashville give up their 2nd for Smid after already trading their 1st? If it's a hockey trade, then who?
ReplyDeleteAlphabet soup busts his slump against the Oil.
Power Play! Decline?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteGoddamn Peckham has been terrible as of late.
ReplyDeleteBad goal. Byfuglien is kind of interesting. His sh% is not that crazy, but he's bombing the net - might get to 300 shots this year.
ReplyDeleteRQ, he was at 10% through the 1st half of the season, unheard of for a Dman.
ReplyDeleteYeah but he's down to 7% now. That's a little lucky no doubt, but 250-300 shots is a lot.
ReplyDeleteIf the Oilers were a good team, Peckham would've been sent down to OKC about 4-6 weeks ago and at being called back now. Instead he's having the same experience over and over again.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. And for a dman to get 300 shots, it mean he can actually hit the net pretty consistently with his slapper, which is really all a guy should care about. Average percentages will guarantee the points will come. Rebounds, deflections...
ReplyDeleteBuffy v. Peckman would be a sight to behold.
ReplyDelete5th amongst dmen in hits. good job teddy peckman.
ReplyDeleteI love 27 for the Thrashers. I'm pretty sure that's Joe Satriani.
ReplyDeleteThe 4th has had much better possession since we lost Stortini and stopped playing MacIntyre. Coincidence?

They have the Heritage Classic on the NHL Network. Man do I miss Pisani and Stoll
ReplyDeletePrincipe said Its not often a guy breaks his nose and...
ReplyDeleteWhat he meant was: Its not often a guy breaks his own nose.
Dunno what the shots were but corsi surely must be reflecting zone possession that period because we had sweet fuck all pressure in their end.
ReplyDeletethanks guys, I'm a glutton for punishment I guess
ReplyDeleteI was shocked that Renney did the right thing, IMO, by starting DD today because I thought we wouldn't see him again until Wed at Col.
ReplyDeletebut he shit the bed right off the fucking bat even though he's looked calm since.
and, yes, because he's such a willing ruffian that it's easy to forget just how easy it is for teams to walk around 49. He's playing past his pedigree and another reason to remember that he we need a Real D in the summer and possibly too.
I'd like to not have to endure any other young or stupid D outside of 49/58.
So that means we need two guys to help out 6/77 and yeah it means I'd deal 5 as well.
Not for the fuck of it, mind you, but because I doubt he gets much better. There's no way he'll get tougher or dirtier and there's no way he CAN become better offensively because he just doesn't have it in that regard.
Chances 5-5 after 20; 2-5 EV and 3-0 ST.
BTW, I watched a bit of the Cats loss to Det last night and are all of Higgins-Reasoner-Dvorak UFA's this summer?
Did Katz bring in Bettman?;)
ReplyDeleteEven Katz must surely be embarrassed on how Gary Bettman is sucking up to him during this 2nd intermission interview.
ReplyDeleteKatz must be thinking, "Don't use your teeth."
Bettman is in Alberta for the Calgary game. Geez...some of you guys have tinfoil hats.
ReplyDeleteKatz invested in the building? What was that anyway?
ReplyDeleteBah another bad goal by Dubnyk.
ReplyDeleteHorcoff just standing there covering no one.
ReplyDeleteIt's not about settling his team town, it's about getting them interested in the game. Starting to feel like the Anaheim game all over again.
ReplyDeleteLovely.
ReplyDeleteI mean a great no look backhand but Jesus H. Christ we are playing soft. Do they really expect to win games playing like they did against the Habs?
27 has been brutal with the puck the last two games.
ReplyDeletethat play goes back the other way because 27 couldn't make a 10 foot pass to 10.
that's the 27 that's easy to hate.
let's see if the Oilers quit.
The last 2 Hersey Bear games Souray has been injured and hasn't played. Has he recovered or is he still injured.
ReplyDeleteIf there's any pre-arranged deal out there, it's that no-one claims Souray until five minutes before the waiver wire expires.
ReplyDeletePlus, a member of the Oiler's scouting staff is following Souray around in a white van packed full of electronics to block his cell phone reception since no one ever calls to express their love anyway.
Parting shot is to make him feel like the joke contestant on American Idol.
Dennis, agreed. Right from 27's first shift... I wonder if he's still trying to kick the flu because he's playing he's in a fog.
ReplyDeleteOh good. Hemsky's looking at his wrist and grimacing again.
ReplyDeleteTime to go do something interesting, like mowing the lawn.
ReplyDeleteWhy on earth are they interviewing Colin Campbell? Did his son get a penalty?
ReplyDeleteLT: They did it to put the rest of us asleep.
ReplyDeleteBoy, Tambo better get down to the dressing room for the 2nd intermission.
ReplyDeleteCampbell now too? What's with Oiler broadcasts and distasteful interviews these days? Lowe, Laforge, Bettman, and now Campbell? What does Charlie Manson think about the Oilers these days?
CC is a douuuucheee.
ReplyDeleteWell they haven't given up on Omark on the PP, that's at least his 2nd shift.
ReplyDeleteWhat has Penner's TOI looked like last two games, anyone know?
Jacques back injury from that fall should have him back by Christmas.
ReplyDeletePenner really is fighting the puck big time. That last shift looked nothing like his usual self. Great work by 77, 10, and 83 to get possession back and get down low and then the play dies on 27's stick again.
ReplyDeleteSweet Jesus. Bucky in Bucky vision. KILL ME NOW!
ReplyDeleteThe Penner of the last three games is the Penner I wouldn't mind if they traded. He looks like he's already dreaming of Southern California
ReplyDeleteRiv: he thinks the only way I'll get my emails answered on LT's show is if I call myself "Speeds.":)
ReplyDeletePenner gave no effort along the boards and takes a penalty.
ReplyDeleteIt's Times like these I hope Renney sends him a message and parks his ass. He's a vet and should know better
The Oilers have one scoring chance in the game's last 23 min.
ReplyDeleteand it was shorthanded.
It could be the flu, but I think he must have an upper body injury. We're talking about 2-3 weeks now. The good thing about Penner is he usually doesn't hurt you too much when his offensive game slumps.
ReplyDeletewould you have dealt 27 for the Blues Johnson?
ReplyDeletediscuss.
Dennis: I didn't get your email until after the show, but would have read it. It was very funny and none of the words were outside the law. :-)
ReplyDeleteNext week the email should be working properly.
and there's the Chris Mason I've been reading about!
ReplyDeleteDennis: No. Check out his underlying and basic numbers, not exactly golden.
ReplyDeleteWell that's a weak one. maybe it'll wake them up. What a snoozer
ReplyDeleteTerrible goal. Beyond terrible.
ReplyDeleteBeauty pass by 4. Beauty.
ReplyDeleteWtf?!
ReplyDeleteIs my feed delayed? I don't see a goal XD
Oilers lead the league in shooting at the crest?
ReplyDeleteAh there it is.
ReplyDeleteWeak weak goal.
LT: I thought it was good and wondered why you didn't read it.
ReplyDeleteI thought that perhaps Mike - Speeds - had purchased time on your program:)
BTW, I know you can't respond to this but I wasn't impressed with Hughson's Expos response in the absolute least.
The guy called the games for a couple of years and he could have given an anecdote or two. First, he was humourless when he responded to you not being over the Expos move as of yet - and I'm not over it either - and the provided a stock answer of Mtl being great when the Dodgers were in town for a series.
it reminded of why I learned to like Hughson all those years ago when he screamed "Big bert on the wing" or "Nazzy" or simply "The twins."
it's nice sometimes when people are you think they are.
//would you have dealt 27 for the Blues Johnson?//
ReplyDeleteYes. But the question is basically irrelevant. St. Louis was NOT going to trade Johnson to Edmonton for Penner.
Christ, there is absolutely no penalty to be seen. Peckham did nothing
ReplyDeleteDennis: Well, I think the Expos item might have surprised him. I set up the interview and went over the talking points but didn't get to that point in the discussion before we rolled tape. So, it was probably me.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to LEAD with the Expos but thought better of it. :-)
speeds didn't buy any ads, but everyone is welcome to. Dennis could buy a 60 second segment called "Tip of the Hat, Wag of the Finger" each week.
It would kill. :-)
Dennis, agreed on the Hughson/Expos comment. Maybe he doesn't like TSN for some reasonand that reminded him of that time.
ReplyDeleteIn a population boom, growth of your descendents is exponential in number of generations, which is maximized by reproducing at the youngest possible age. This is known as the hot-to-trot strategy. The human population has been all boom for hundreds of years now. It's taken for granted.
ReplyDeleteIn a population bust scenario, ravaged by disease, starvation, and lack of 91 octane petroleum, number of generations (and rate of decline) is minimized by reproducing at the oldest viable age. This is known as the ST strategy.
What is the house take on not being a desirable player destination? Churn is not a winning coefficient if you have to overpay to find takers.
The Souray deal was made to appease impatient ticket holders. The Pronger yard sale was also made with impatience. Haven't we harmed this team enough with impatience?
How many former GMs go to bed at night pondering how famous they might be for trades they decided not to make, if only more people knew?
What drives people nuts about ST is that he swaggers around town like a deaf-mute Clint Eastwood before his first gunfight. The whole dusty town is thinking "who is this poser, anyway?" And maybe he is, but it's hard to tell while he sits on the porch chewing the long stem.
We wait, and evaluate with contempt.
GD10: you don't think so?
ReplyDeleteYou think Stewart's that much better? or because he's that much cheaper?
what would it have taken to make it work, IYO.
I don't want to lose our vet wingers but something's gotta shake loose in order to improve this terrible D.
For instance, Plante doesn't project to be as good as 49 or 58, does he? so how many shitty plays will have to see from him before he can help us win?
real defensemen.
right now.
Yes. But the question is basically irrelevant. St. Louis was NOT going to trade Johnson to Edmonton for Penner.
ReplyDeleteI hesitate to ask, but why?
RiversQ:
ReplyDeleteWell I think Stewart is better. And that Shattenkirk is way better than Mcclement.
Stewart is 22, playing the toughs, got a good Corsi, and is projecting for 70 points.
LT: years of binge drinking might be catching up to me because my memory is still better than most - the Expos years remain untouched - but it's not what it used to be so I'm trying to remember - to also address Jake's point - the nature of when and why Hughson left TSN.
ReplyDeleteI know that I used to know but I'm trying to remember because maybe Jake's point has some merit.
But I wouldn't blame yourself; not in the least. I was listening to your show and hoping you would save it for the last question and I'll be goddamned if you didn't:) and it pleased me.
and then Hughson drops the ball and it was a weak effort by him. Especially how he mocked how much you missed the Expos.
at that point I wish it were live and I Could buy time.
we would have had some fun:)
Oilers forwards bringing the offence in this one. Shot toals by line through 40 minutes:
ReplyDelete4-13-14 = 2 shots
91-89-23 = 2 shots
22-85-28 = 1 shot
27-10-83 = 0 shots
Horpensky with three minutes of powerplay time among their ~12 minutes apiece. That's just pathetic, I'm sorry.
bruce: 27 is dragging down the 10 line bigtime.
ReplyDeleteI imagine I was one of the few who off the top supported that offer sheet and I've always liked the guy but he's been fucking brutal lately.
I mean he literally can't handle the puck.
Bruce: pretty much all five shots were muffins too. Poor performance thus far.
ReplyDeleteFpb: I don't understand why any of these players were available really. I don't see why you'd quit on Johnson now at 22 yrs old and having missed some development time due to injury, but STL would know best.
ReplyDeleteI can buy Stewart being worth more than Penner, but it's not like they're miles apart. Stewart was on pace for 60-65, just like last year and in the same range as Penner.
RiversQ: True dat. Even the goal was a muffin.
ReplyDeleteI have the chances at 8-14 after 40 min.
ReplyDeleteOpposing teams just don't care if they take a panalty against the Oilers do they?
ReplyDeleteEnstrom just did the most obvious can opener I've ever seen.
Jeez H, Penner's in California already.
today is a day when 27 can really go fuck himself.
ReplyDelete41 was a pylon on that one. What exactly was he thinking in the neutral zone there?
ReplyDeleteSatriani puts the Oilers on the PP.
Penner looks fucking terrible. didn't even attempt to do anything about Kane
ReplyDeleteDennis: Agreed Penner has stunk last couple of games. He seems to have coordination issues at times and on days like that he needs to just get pissed off about it and bring the big body. If he does neither he's pretty much useless.
ReplyDeletePenner is one year till UFA. Stewart is cheaper, younger, more physcical, and one year to RFA.
ReplyDeleteThat plus, the Oilers had no equivalent of Shattenkirk to offer.
St. Louis is a young team. I don't think they wanted to bring in a relatively expensive mid-career guy who might not fit in.
Penner is just a guy I don't think St. Louis would have any interest in.
From the Oilers point of view, I do Penner for Johnson without blinking because it fills one of the holes (centre and defense).
Hall - nice
ReplyDeleteWhat's happened to Mason? Not the St Lois Mason anyway.
Foster's shot is just as useless as Smid's
I've changed my mind for the 20th time. Keep hemsky deal penner. This is embarassing, whats wrong with him...
ReplyDeleteThat Hall kid is pretty good
ReplyDeleteHall yeah! (X2)
ReplyDeleteHemmer and Hall play catch on a nice PP goal.
ReplyDeleteThe difference on that 2nd PP goal was that Hemsky and Hall were both moving instead of everyone standing around.
ReplyDeleteWhat a concept.
CSimpson:
ReplyDeleteI too was set in my trade Hemmer/not penner until about 3 games ago. He wasn't on that PP with 10-83.
Hopefully that continues
Horcoff taking away the dman in front of the net should get a staples assist for sure.
ReplyDeleteSmid saved a goal there. He finally realized an opponent might be on the far post!
ReplyDeleteConsidering that both Campbell and Bettman are in the building can we check to see if the Oilers are actually Allowed to score goals from the slot on the PP?
ReplyDeleteI know for years it was a little known fact that Tommy Salo wasn't allowed to stop shots that were tipped.
Vandermeer shot that last one like he's actually an RH shot.
ReplyDeleteDoes 27 have Gilbert Brule disease or Alex Kovalev disease?
ReplyDeletediscuss
91 up with 10-83
ReplyDeletegood job by Renney.
Good on Renney for stapling the cheesburger to the bench. His worst game as an Oiler.
ReplyDeleteAnother shift of 10-83 and no 27 to be seen.
ReplyDeleteNice job Renney! (not sarcasm)
That's twice now I've noticed 89 talking to his wingers prior to a draw and then winning it pretty cleanly. The winger fouled up this last one - its not always the C. He's noticed something.
ReplyDeleteMaybe part of Tambo's call to arms was telling Penner that he wasn't trading him. Knowing that he has another year plus of this would be enough to break any man's spirit. I know mine was broken long ago and I don't have to play the games, I just watch them. Plus I can choose to turn the TV off if I wish.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if he's hurt.
Do you take Simmonds and a first (or Tuebert/voynov) for 27?
ReplyDeleteAny bets 4 gets the hatty?
ReplyDeleteI think Renney's sitting Omark too for the weak effort on Kane's goal.
ReplyDelete4 has taken the game over.
ReplyDeleteif he scores a natural PP hat-trick then I urge the denizens of edm to offer the young man all your women folk.
"Tom Renney riding the hot hand of Taylor Hall"
ReplyDeletePat: not bad:)
ReplyDeleteIAL: I love Simmonds but it's a D we need. Now if there was a D coming back that was as good at his position as Simmonds is at his, then yes I would be all about it.
This is the kind of game where you give 4 his head and let him run wild. Props to Renney for realizing he's the best forward for both teams tonight.
ReplyDeletePenner back on the ice and what happens? wow.
Holy Hell it gets worse?
ReplyDeleteI think Renney's sitting Omark too for the weak effort on Kane's goal.
ReplyDeleteThat was Chorney
Penner looking good.
ReplyDeleteWTF is Renney putting him out for again! And he takes a penalty...
ReplyDeleteSmid too.
ReplyDeleteProbably the best place for Penner right now.
ReplyDeleteHoly Christ, Penner!
ReplyDeletethis is the best "worst" game I've seen a talented vet play in a long time.
ReplyDeleteit's to the point where if 27 punched 4 in the mouth I wouldn't be surprised.
Turns out I've been posting under my second account all day. The Kiprian comments are mine.
ReplyDeletePenner is playing like a man carrying a "ball and chain."
ReplyDeleteWait a minute... He's got marriage-osis. Explains everything.
27 might as well skate from the box to the locker room. Me thinks he's done with ice time
ReplyDeleteWell I'm not one to let a couple bad games change my opinion after ~300 Gp as an Oiler, but Dustin is having a tough one today for sure.
ReplyDeleteHis game's got plenty of sustain but he's prone to the odd stinker. He's got more company on the second part of that statement than the first.
Why on God's earth do people dislike Reddox? He's a machine!
ReplyDeletePaging young Mr. 14....
ReplyDeleteToo funny. Penner gets out of the box and immediately gets called back to the bench.
ReplyDelete"The Red Antelope!" of course! that's perfect!
ReplyDeleteGeez, Antropov looked like John Ferguson on that play.
ReplyDeleteBruce: Yes, and I still like him.
ReplyDeletebut for his age and his GP he should have a way figured out how not to be Awful.
Agreed Bruce. Every NHL'er has some games where bad luck, some bad decisions, nagging small injuries make them look bad. Then they overcompensate and look worse.
ReplyDeletePenner's work ethic can't be questioned. He produces regularly over multiple years for a crappy team playing with kids, often against tough comp. That takes effort.
Antropov: diving is about timing.
ReplyDeleteholy, i thought the zebras missed it.
ReplyDelete89 battling the puck as well.
ReplyDeleteGreat shift by Reddox on the last PP.
I think you can pencil him in for next year. Looking like Tod Marchant tonight. The PK improvement started a bit before he got the call, but he's certainly helping in that regard.
I'd like Antropov on the Oil.
ReplyDeleteDoes Foster realize the idea is to hit the net?
ReplyDeleteNSH scouts in the house 3 games in a row. Something around 27 for C.Franson?
ReplyDeleteha!
ReplyDeleteCONGRATS TAYLOR HALL!
ReplyDeletegive up your women folk!!!!
ReplyDeleteJust threw my hat for that one!
ReplyDeletethis is a great day!
ReplyDeleteF Me its nice to see an Oiler drive the net like that on a PP!
ReplyDeletewell done, young man.
ReplyDeleteHall with the PP natural hattrick. Wow.
ReplyDeleteYou know what's funny? Smid faking a shot from the point. That's funny.
Well done child. Hopefully the adults are ashamed and pull up their socks.
