Petry's a talented young defenseman but he's lost his confidence. Playing defense with the Edmonton Oilers will do that for you.
I don't think the club should have called him up this season; then again, he was playing extremely well and Petry is 23 years old. I suspect he'll be better upon recall and would bet it comes at the deadline.
Someone from the Oiler blue is heading out of town; my guess is one or more of Jim Vandermeer, Ladislav Smid or Kurtis Foster.
--
Taylor Chorney is back in the show. I'm not sure if this is a good idea, as the young defenseman (Chorney is about 7 months older than Petry) is struggling in the AHL. Here are the Barons defensemen since January 1st:
- Bryan Helmer 17gp, 4-9-13 +6
- Richard Petiot 19gp, 0-5-5 +2
- Alex Plante 18gp, 0-4-4 +2
- Anthony Aeillo 10gp, 0-5-5 +1
- Shawn Belle 8gp, 0-1-1 +1
- Johan Motin 5gp, 0-0-0 +1
- Jordan Bendfeld 7gp, 0-0-0 -3
- Taylor Chorney 11gp 1-3-4 -5
Sprague Cleghorn anyone?
ReplyDeleteIt's cool they brought him up, and even cooler to send him back down. Now he understands that he's not ready to play in the NHL, and if he's got the right stuff he will improve.
It's cool they brought him up, and even cooler to send him back down. Now he understands that he's not ready to play in the NHL, and if he's got the right stuff he will improve.
ReplyDeleteAlternatively, he may have taken away that he's every bit as good as several of the Oilers' other "NHL defensemen", which he is. Could go either way.
Actually think it was a smart move to send Petry down. Let him get another 20 games and playoffs in AHL and start afresh in training camp. Like his skill set.
ReplyDeleteChorney call up is frustrating because I kept hoping Belle would get another 5 to 7 games to show if he play at this level
Agreed with your comments re quit last night. They looked as bad or worst than last season.
The ONLY hope this team has is if MBS is able to draft enough real NHL prospects over the next 3 years to completely overcome KL and ST inadequacies
Who's this Helmer guy? Let's get THAT guy! :)
ReplyDeletewhat does this say about Plante? That they'd rather bring up Chorney for his first pass ability or that Plante's way down the list?
ReplyDelete58 had been making the Big error as of late so I can't fault the club for sending him back.
It says that they are showcasing Chorney for a trade.
ReplyDeletei.e. They aren't going to bring up Plante before the trade deadline, and let other GM's start asking for him instead of Chorney, if Plante were to play well.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Chorney has a lot of trade value for a contender. Plante either. I prefer Plante long term.
ReplyDeleteVersteeg for a first and a third from Philly both in 2011
ReplyDeleteOver pay or under pay?
I don't know if playing Chorney is showcasing him. That's like "showcasing" a 1999 Tercel by taking someone for a test drive and playing them the kickass stereo.
ReplyDelete:)
Just listen to that radio. That's not factory my friend. No sir this radio has been replaced and plays crystal clear FM.
ReplyDeleteOh no I have gotten into an accident. How could this happen? What can I do?
ReplyDeleteSucks that this new radio has to go to waste. Should I take it out and put it in my new vehicles whose radio is likely to be inferior?
ReplyDeleteYou guys fail to understand the real reason for bringing up Chorney instead of others who may be playing well and deserve a chance, and for sending down Petry. It's more important to Dithers that the Barons play well and make the playoffs than for the Oilers to do well. In fact, it's most important for the Oilers to continue to fail.
ReplyDeletePerhaps my friends on the hockey blog can provide me with some much needed guidance in this matter.
ReplyDeleteSmarmy and Kris:
ReplyDeleteWell the I wouldn't call Chorney a Tercel, the Tercel is economical, reliable and shows consistency.
Chorney is more of geometro.
Well I'd rather talk about an old Tercel rather then Chorney.
ReplyDeleteYou see Taylor Chorney play and you think. "This team is terrible. Why did I pay 500 dollars for this while a gaggle of street kids break into car repeatedly."
ReplyDeleteThen you realize that Renney could just play Strudwick and you know things could somehow get even worse.
Plus awhile back I kidded that Khabby might have what it takes to lose 20 in a row and now that looks to be a reality.
ReplyDeleteIt's kind of funny.
Not a bad move by Philly. Versteeg has more points than any Oiler not named D Train, from playing on the Lafs 3rd line.
ReplyDelete1st and 3rd picks aren't as much of a payment on a team competing for the President's trophy though I have no clue what Philly has for prospects.
Oh and as Kevin Lowe would point out, he has a cup right too...
You've got to strike while the iron's hot, right?
sorry typo, I meant "cup ring"
ReplyDeletePlantes been a healthy scratch on the farm this year a couple times. Can't be a good sign for his development.
ReplyDeleteWhat has happened to Petiot's stock? I thought we would have seen him in the show at least once.
ReplyDeleteI haven't watched any OKC games, but during preseason he seemed to a lot of us to be one of the best defensemen on the ice. Has his play fallen off?
Rather than call up Petiot for a look, it seems mgmt is convinced of some potential in Chorney that the rest of us are not seeing.
Familiar story.... O'Marra, Jacques, dare I say Gagner, etc, etc, etc.....
Frelbo - The Oilers have never handled prospects as a meritocracy. (Petiot is actually more journeyman than prospect).
ReplyDeleteThere are favorites and then there's the rest.
maybe they are showcasing Chorney before a trade? We know that scouts from different teams visited OKC
ReplyDeleteSmarmy: Get photos of the stereo and all of the 8-tracks.
ReplyDeleteSmarmy: Get photos of the stereo and all of the 8-tracks.
ReplyDeleteThat's the kind of thing that'll get you charged under the Legal Profession Act.
I'd be willing to guess they wanted Chorney because they think he'll be magic beans on the power play.
ReplyDeleteAt this point, I don't know who to bring up. Plante has been a healthy scratch, Belle looked ok on his first recall and eh on his second.
Not sure why you wouldn't bring up Petoit unless he's another slow legged d-man and we have enough of that right now.
Do we have any idea who is doing the heavy lifting in OKL?
ReplyDeleteHemsky's value has to be more than Versteeg's doesn't it? Versteeg is certainly more rugged and fits what teams traditionally look for in the playoffs. But Hemmer is a better offensive player.
You guys are contemplating the Chorney decision as if the strategy is to win games. Therein lies your confusion.
ReplyDeleteThe Versteeg trade certainly sets the bar on value for Hemsky. He's certainly got more raw talent than Versteeg so a first and a third, or prospects of that pedigree, is the minimum we should expect.
ReplyDeleteBut where that first rounder lands in the draft is important. The first rounder Toronto got is likely no sooner than the 28th pick. I'd much rather get a first round pick from a team that tries and and then fails to crack the top eight in their conference.
Tambellini should be on the phone with the on-the-bubble teams.
Chorney's contract is up. Plante's isn't. Tambellini has to make a decision on Chorney. He doesn't on Plante.
ReplyDeleteThey are showcasing Chorney as a potential throw-in to a deal, especially if they are getting a young defenseman in the deal.
The Lowe-Prendergast era was not making decisions on prospects over. MacGregor is filling up the pipeline...Marincin, Davidson, Blain.
Fish-or-cut-bait time on Chorney is upon us this summer. Do you really want to use one of the 50 contracts on him next year? Especially if you draft Larsson, and send Marincin to the AHL?
The best option for the Oilers is to use him as a minor piece of a larger deal.
At the rate the Oilers are going they will have less points than last year. This year Oilers have not had as many key injuries as last.year.
ReplyDeleteOilers continue to be a young fast team that does not get any better. This is the same story for the last 5-6 years or so. Story stays the same.
I hope that we are showcasing Chorney for a trade but fear that nobody wants the Oiler crap! Geez I wonder if Stortini will clear waivers?? We are thirtieth overall, in a free fall, and other teams want our cast offs? Seriously do you guys realize the emperor has no clothes...... Not a nice winter outfit .....he is 100% buck ass naked
ReplyDeleteToronto media is questioning why the Leafs never claimed Grabner off waivers...... Edm, absolute deafening silence, Guess the local media was too worried about whether Stortini could sneak through waivers. Or maybe it was to gauge the effectiveness of Tambellini's message that everybody's job was on the line except for himself, KLowe and Khabbibulin
If there is a marketplace in North America where the MSM is more thoroughly in the pocket of, and completely complicit with, their professional team I would love to hear about it. I mean have you heard any reporting on John Short calling KLowe the worse GM of the last decade? Think that would happen in TO? Montreal? vancouver? NYC? Philly?
But the PLAN was always that we would stand alone in 30th overall and pick first overall. Surround our kids with players genetically incapable of performing their assigned tasks. End up last in PP, end up last in PK and talk about competing 4 to 6 years from now.
I can't buy the "Showcasing him" line. If they wanted to showcase him they'd leave him in the AHL to continue putting up some decent numbers. Bringing him up to show everyone that he can't handle the NHL will not improve his trade value at all.
ReplyDeleteSending Petry down at this time strikes me as pecular because of the timing. Coach Renney has been away from the team so the call must have been mostly the GM's to make. It just seems odd. Have we heard anything official of the reasoning behind the move from anyone yet?
Other John:
ReplyDeletethe emperor not wearing any clothes? the MSM not having any balls?
it's like you went back in time and took one of my old posts verbatim from 2007.
the funny thing is, though, you can still dance to that tune.
Renney off day including comments about Petry/Chorney at the 9:45 mark
ReplyDelete"my guess is that Petey(Petry) will be up again before the season is over"
I wonder if his call up is to demonstrate that he is a legitimate prospect to a potential suitor ? If Tamby were to send Hemmer somewhere for a top flight D prospect, I suspect they would be asking for a D prospect coming back to fill a void. Chorney might be an easier sell in that regard if he had some NHL minutes recently.
ReplyDeleteI also wonder if Cogs is being showcased to someone out east playing with Hall and Eberle .
Lowetide, do you feel that Penner would truly want to be part of this going forward, or is his alleged interest in staying just lip service ? While I am not his biggest fan, maybe we should just accept him for the player he is. A guy who consistantly scores 25-30 goals on a bad team. My hunch is he could elevate his play in a playoff run, if we ever get back there. If he wants to stay, I'd sign him. His skill set is not duplicated on the current team, even if he doesn't play like Clark Gillies.
Loubardias nearly orgasmed on that 4th Flames goal.
ReplyDeleteAre we on the Colorado plan?

Well, I suspect that the Oilers won't be anywhere close to making the playoffs next season either.
Still far too many holes and rookies. Our goaltending tandem is subpar along with our porous defense.
Horcoff's offense ain't where it used to be and he's not very rugged either. Whitney's our only offenseman and his Achilles feet will be an ongoing concern.
I don't imagine that Tankbellini will do much to plug the roster holes prior to next season.
It's okay though because we can draft well and continue to evaluate 'prospects' like JFJ and maybe even Chorney. All the while we get to watch brutal hockey.
Maybe Hall will go Stamkos next year and the light will go on for another four or five rookies and we'll see the second season... Okay, I'm putting the burning drapes down. :P
sigh...
Weird I thought I posted earlier.
ReplyDeleteLosing my mind.
Anyhow I've seen a lot of Versteeg. He got a lot of opportunity here in Toronto imo but he's not at Hemsky's level. I like him and he's a good player and he stays healthy but Ales Hemsky is a better hockey player.
I wonder if the Oilers even considered Grabner when he was waived. He has what, 23 goals now?
Opportunity knocked and he answered.

Pretty bold statement to say that about the only Oiler who scored 20 goals on a Stanley Cup winning team, and the only Oiler (other than Khabibulin) with a ring.
Godot makes a good point about the Oilers making a decision on Chorney this summer.
ReplyDeleteIn light of that, maybe this call-up is perhaps Chorney's Last Chance Texaco.
Maybe it's at the request of another GM... It's possible but I think it more likely that Petry needed a break and Chorney a last look.
Audition time also sends a message to the rest of the team.
It's obvious what has happened year.
ReplyDeleteKnowing the season is lost, the Oilers management plan is to do everything possible to ensure the 30th overall position and no worse than the 2nd overall pick.
Everyone thought still giving Khabibulin and his .890 save percentage was enough of a strategic move to ensure this outcome? Steve Tambellini is far, far more visionary than that when it comes to promoting failure.
Avert your children's eyes, because the horror show known as the Strudwick/Chorney defense pairing is about to be unleashed.
(Queue Liam Neeson as Zeus dropping the "Release the Krakken" line, for dramatic effect).
^*here, not year, in the first sentence above.
ReplyDeleteGrabner seemed pretty risky at the time. Traded from his first team, waived by the next. Keeping him on the roster for the entire season would mean we couldn't have Jacques!
ReplyDeleteWell, one team is in a playoff race and the other is in a race to the bottom. Which team do you put the better player on?
ReplyDeleteFrom the Friedman article it sounds like LT's Hemsky post was pretty prescient. I'm glad Tambellini was at least asking for Schenn. It's way too far away from the deadline for either side to cave or not make a counter-offer.
ReplyDeleteMy point is, people seem to dwell on the things Penner doesn't consistantly do rather than what he does deliver. He consistantly delivers offense on a team that doesn't,so I would sign him. Just not convinced the guy really wants to sign here. He,and his new bride, probably a lot happier somewhere like California.
ReplyDeleteYes, the guy has shown he can deliver in the playlets as well. We will need some veterans up front beyond Horcoff won't we?
Bold statement ?
H-bomb,
ReplyDeleteRelease the Crappin!
The "Crappin" is the Titan of tanking that is Chorney-Strudwick.
The only thing that could defeat the Crappin is the gaze of the Khabidusa, but we've got that under control.
HBomb/Kris
ReplyDeleteNot sure any of us want to admit that we went to, saw or know any of the lines to Clash of the Titans
Altho both of you are eerily accurate with how bad what are about to see will be
I didn't see it, uhh..., I'm just telling you what my friend who saw it told me.
ReplyDeleteIf the Oilers sell a couple of parts for prospects, or Hemsky or Penner, Khabi could easily lose 20/20, or at least go winless in 20
ReplyDeleteDallas looks like team that could use a winger. Anyone up to speed with their prospects. An injured Benn? Is Glennie a question mark? Do they have anything else?
ReplyDeleteChorney is up because LaForge wants to test his "Departiclization Cannon" before he uses it on the Vancouver Canucks.
ReplyDeleteAnyone saw the Steen goal tonight?
ReplyDeleteThat's dedication and effort.
The Other John: Oddly enough, I just saw the trailers for said movie, so I spared myself that waste of 2 hours.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I subsequently watched "2012" a few weeks ago and ended up sacrificing 3 hours of my life that I'll never get back, so I was cursing Roland Emmerich for an extended period.
Then I remembered how many 3-hour time blocks I've wasted on Oilers' games since fall 2006, and it all seemed relatively insignificant.
@ RiversQ
ReplyDeleteI would consider Glennie to be a disappointment. He is not having the kind of season expected from a top 10 pick in his fourth year of junior.
I would stay away from Glennie.
Any conversations with Dallas should start with Jamie Benn
Ok, anyone read anything about Benn's shoulder injury? Done for the year?
ReplyDeleteWould Benn and Dallas' 1st this year be enough for Hemsky or Penner?
and the only Oiler (other than Khabibulin) with a ring.
ReplyDeleteFraser, dude. I know it's easy to forget about him, I do it all the time, too. But he's technically a Stanley Cup Champion.
Terry Jones latest re:Tambellini meeting with
ReplyDeletethe team.
The more I think about the possibility of dealing Penner and Hemsky the more it scares me.
ReplyDeleteA 1st round pick and good prospect is nice and all but boy does it really fuck the Oilers for next year.
There may be some options in free agency to provide some help up front while more of MBS' picks develop but none of those options are any better than Hemsky and Penner save maybe Richards. And that's probably going to be a huge overpay.
I think the Oilers are really better off keeping these two and hoping they can re-sign them this off-season. If by next year's deadline they aren't re-signed then you can trade them next year. At least Hall and company will have had help for most of another year before being depended on to carry the bulk of the load offensively going forward.
I think this is actually a huge cross-road for this organization if they mess it up they could be Thrashers north.
They might be able to get away with dealing one of the two but trading both for anything short of a king's ransom would be a huge mistake.
A 1st round pick and good prospect is nice and all but boy does it really fuck the Oilers for next year.
ReplyDeleteI hear you but on the other hand, Hemsky and Penner have been here for two 30th place finishes. We are not talking Crosby and Malkin here.
Trade Hemsky and sign Penner to a two year extension - but I change my mind daily :-)
I realize they're not the be all and end all. The thing I'm most concerned with is who do you get to replace them?
ReplyDeleteFree agency hasn't been kind to the Oilers. Is management willing to start next year with Hall, Horcoff, Eberle, Omark, Paajarvi and Gagner as their top 6 while likely breaking in more rookies?
That's a recipe for another 1st overall pick.
Maybe I'm being too optimistic in thinking they won't be 30th overall next year if they keep Hemsky and Penner.
ReplyDeleteIf this mgmt group has any intention of winning any time in the future - then Hemsky and Penner are not traded. These guys are both quality out-scorers and we will not get better players in return. If we are getting a lesser player(s) in return - then this team will be WORSE next year if that's possible - and the franchise will be in a full death spiral no matter what the magnificent bastard does at the draft table
ReplyDeleteI'm of the opinion that mgmt should be looking to only trade soon to be UFAs (Vandy, Jones), vets who have not worked out (Fraser, Foster) or skilled runts that we have an over-supply of (Brule, Cogs). You trade these spare parts for decent bottom 6 forward help or picks of any type. The only skill guy I would even think about trading is Gagner and only for a dman like Bogosian.
And in case anyone is deluded enough to believe that Tambo can right this mess - do you think Lowe would actually hire someone with the capacity to make him look bad? Lowe may be mediocre - but he's smart enough to hire a bozo if only to make him self look decent in comparison. Look at what happened to Pendergast after the bastard started to show his stuff. I'd just fire the lot and hand the keys to MacGregor - we could do far worse.
ahem..cough...Glencross with another 3 points tonight. Think that might be 11 in 5 and 33 for the year. Tough....decent size....quick...slots as a probably playoff performer type...pffttt.
ReplyDeleteNot worth 1.2 per tho....nope. Why worry about filling out the worst bottom six in the NHL when we can chase leprechauns, Heatley's, and our beers with scotch while we pat one anothers asses and wipe Edmonton fan base bukkake residue off our cup rings?
Silly me. Bottom 6? On the Oilers Glencross slots as #2 LW and Hemsky's hangnail replacement on RW when the inevitable happens.
ReplyDeleteIt's every man for himself and since positive results are out the window for at least the next 3 years, trade anyone with a last name beginning with H except wonderboy. Horcoff's contract carcass is developing a nice reek anyways. Corsi be damned.
@Dennis:
ReplyDeleteWow, it's been that long? I had no idea I'd been reading Lowetide for that long.
Off topic but I know we all love crazy stats.
ReplyDeleteOmarks PDO this year is 919. That's 7th worst out of around 3000 seasons over last 4 years. Last years worst on Oilers was Souray at 951.
Year before that was SMac at 964.
Before that- Stoll at 962.
Can anyone tell me how much better his +/- would be if that was bumped up to even 950? What awful puck luck for the kid.
Tambellini talking to the team? Seriously, who is he kidding?
ReplyDeleteSure, maybe there is little effort on the players part, but man, what did he think he assembled? A hockey team?
Then it finally dawned on me. Oilers are following the Quebec Nordiques model.
ReplyDelete@Patrick Kane
ReplyDeleteSo GlenX is on pace to score 40 points. He is a tough and a gritty winger. But not worth 1.2mi.....why? He may not have been worth 1.2 at the start of the contract, but he certainly is now.
@Csimpson18
ReplyDeleteHad Omark been subjected to ES Sv% of .915,he would have given up only 10GA when on the ice. So add 10 to his traditional +\- . As he has currently given 20 GA
5 best rel corsi
ReplyDeleteEberle 13.6
Hall 13.0
Omark 9.5
Gagner 6.4
Horc 5.3
5 worst rel corsi not including macinyre
O'marra -27.4
Jones -14.2
Fraser -11.3
JFJ -8.4
Brule -7.6
@sumoil,
ReplyDeleteSo if he had the team average pdo of 992, he'd have given up something like 6 GA and you could also add considerably to his EV production, putting him well in the black for the season with something like:
27GP 5G 15A 20Pts +4
That's pretty shocking. Wish I knew how to get the right numbers. Anyone being anything less than very high on his potential seems to be selling him short. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think i might have estimated on the low end.
anyone realizing that a HEMSKY for 3 D prospects from L.A. OR NASHVILLE isnt such a bad idea?
ReplyDeleteHemsky for Voynov, Teubert Forbort
Ugh, forgive my logic problems above, it's early. Still Omark should be generating more excitement than he has been.
ReplyDeleteRQ,
ReplyDeleteBenn is a cornerstone of Dallas' future. I doubt Neiwy trades him straight up for 83. Not to mention that he has to go to the bank and NHL to get permission to spend andy money.
Hemsky and Penner have been here for two 30th place finishes.
And 83 and 27 are the reason for those poor finishes. More rookies will vault the Oilers up the standings.
I wonder if the Oilers even considered Grabner when he was waived. He has what, 23 goals now?
ReplyDeleteOpportunity knocked and he answered.
I think at that point of the season, the Isles had waiver priority. Remember, for a long time, they and the Devils were way the hell worse than the Oilers in the standings.
I would consider Glennie to be a disappointment. He is not having the kind of season expected from a top 10 pick in his fourth year of junior.
I would stay away from Glennie.
No question, he misses having Schenn. Those two were scary together last year. They played together for, what, two games before the World Juniors this year?
I hear you but on the other hand, Hemsky and Penner have been here for two 30th place finishes. We are not talking Crosby and Malkin here.
Objection. Relevance?
Then it finally dawned on me. Oilers are following the Quebec Nordiques model.
Great. So we'll win the 2016 Stanley Cup in Houston. Lovely.
@Doogie2K,
ReplyDeleteI believe the waiver wire for the first month of the season was the reverse order of standings from last year. The Oilers would be first. As per link below, the Panters placed Grabner on waivers on Oct. 03. In fact, the Oilers did pass on him.
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2010/10/03/panthers_grabner/
@Brett Gee,
ReplyDeleteI think Tambo's conversation was ... I want everyone to try their best out there and help get some wins.
And a voice at the back yelled out ... we will as soon as you do ...
@ doogie2k
ReplyDeleteu shud mention one more thing...Grabner wasnt really on anyone's radar. Its not like he was a Kyle Quincey or an Ilya Bryzgalov.
He could just as easily have been a 10 goal scorer.
His sh% is 17.9 which is very high.
Ideally he should have been on pace for 20 goals this season.
One thing encouraging about his season is the number of shots he is putting up. 134 shots so far s not shabby at all
@SumOil
ReplyDeleteSo GlenX is on pace to score 40 points. He is a tough and a gritty winger. But not worth 1.2mi.....why? He may not have been worth 1.2 at the start of the contract, but he certainly is now.
And we can add the fact that he was 25 when offered the 1.2 per, had already scored at a .50 rate (although a small sample),and had never been a - player. Pisani was 30 when offered 2.5, was never a + player afterwards, and is still looking for a 40 point season.
Gx has a few other intangibles we need not go into as well.
It was typical Oiler player evaluation, foresight, and prioritization. They had far bigger fish to fry of course, because we are no different than the TML's when it comes to selling a captive audience hype vs results.
Robert (Silky) Nilsson signed for 2m per that year as well if memory serves. Priorities, priorities
@ cabbiesmacker
ReplyDeletei did not sote the sarcasm early on.Sorry I see ur point
Cabbie, what's worse is that GlenX was rooming with Cogs, Gagner, and Gilbert at the time. Apparently they all got along very well and he was 'desperate' to sign with the Oilers.
ReplyDeleteI believe the asking price was 1.1 for 2-3 year. In an interview he said that he had bypassed his agent and even called Lowe and the Oilers directly more than once, and couldn't reach anyone so he left messages saying he wanted to sign and just wanted to sit down and hammer something out. His calls weren't returned. Apparently they were waiting to hear but from their free agent whales.
In the end Calgary approached him with a decent contract and he signed. Since then he's been a solid 40 point or so responsible winger for them.
Don't forget Hedja as well, who asked to sign at about about 1.2m, but was told, wait, we'll get to you later, while they were whale hunting .
ReplyDeleteHedja waited something like 4 weeks I believe before signing with Columbus.
I watch all the Baron games.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure if the numbers reflect it or not. But Chorney has been the best D men down there for a while now.
