Red Wings at Oilers, G38 '10-'11

I watched the last Red Wing game against Philadelphia the other night. Mike Babcock was not happy, Mickey Redmond  was grumpy and the team looked disorganized. My guess is they arrive at tonight's game in a bad mood and the town team is going to need to play very well.

I'm old enough to remember when the Red Wings were terrible. "Darkness with Harkness" and the flushing of Mahovlich, McGregor and the rest. The period of time when Detroit ownership spent long months implying Mickey Redmond wasn't really hurt. A short period when their best forwards were men like Nick Libett and Bill Hogaboam, the long period when John Ogrodnick was a one man show.

The problem back then was poor leadership at the top. Ownership had their head up their asses and management was either in-fighting or trading away Mahovlich. Impact players arrived in Detroit and shortly thereafter began to scheme their way out (hello Marcel Dionne).

Detroit's hockey team was called the Dead Wings.

Mike Illitch took over from Bruce Norris in 1982. Five years later they were in the conference finals, the year after that they did it again. In 1995 they made the finals and they've won the Stanley four times ('97, '98, '02, '08).

Daryl Katz took over the Oilers in 2008. I think he'll have his arena by 2013.

  1. When my Dad was upset at other drivers he would either call them Charlie or Ogrodnick. e.g., "Let's get moving, Ogrodnick."

Now I know where that name came from. Great name.

Hall and MPS are both overdue big games.

Also, Dipietro left the game last night with a groin strain (NYI Facebook Fanpage).

  9. The Wings have been playing about .500 hockey since Dats went down, including back to back home losses to NYI and PHI as well as beating COL in OT when the Wings were outshot 49-30.

The Wing being outshot? Cracks in the much vaunted depth of the Wings?

They lost Cleary, who was their leading scorer at the time (think about that statement for a moment) and held their heads up, but putting Dats on top of that has really hurt them.

That being said I expect them to have the puck 75% of the time and outshoot the Oilers something like 36-16.

Points % of bottom 5 teams:

    OTT .463
    TOR .421
    EDM .419
    NYI .405
    NJD .289

If the Oilers lose in regulation tonight it will drop them to .408 and tee up Thursday's game as the battle for 29th.

I really hope NJD start stopping pucks and scoring goals.

I really hope NYI picks up Leighton off waivers. (given that he has 1 year after this one, I doubt they do)

    Go Oilers!

They are both UFA at the end of the year, which is a huge plus.

Trading Gerber would be a bit hit on the AHL team. I think that it's important that OKC has a strong season.

I really hope he's seen his last scratched game this season. What kind of message are you sending him if you scratch him one game and play him on the top line the next? It just seems silly.

    Tencer projectile tweet...

JDD is too expensive for Wang. Gerber is too good for Snow.

Besides, it will be impossible to pry a pick out of NYI. Too bad Mike Milbury isn't still the GM.

...Other than an admission that they are burning a spot in the lineup to help ensure losses of course...

Oh, don't know if it was mentioned over the holidays, but Kyle Woodlief did an interview over the holidays - a good read for Those of us who have become more interested in the draft this year.

  19. I read that over the holidays (once the injuries hit and I started thinking more seriously about the draft) and it was an absolutely great read, as was Redline's pre-tournament report.

    ReplyDelete
  27. If redline is right and you have a cluster of picks that are top4, it'll be pretty hard for the Oil to miss out on one of those four at this point. TOR/NYI/NJD/EDM look like a pretty clear bottom four, and the likelihood of a team 5th last or better winning the lottery is small.

How much is it going to cost to keep Hemsky?

At the very least he is going to ask for a couple million more than Horcoff.

That's one of the problems with Horc's contract - every team has an internal pay scale do you can't expect Penner or Hemsky to take anything less than Horcoff.

So lets say he gives us a discount (in relation to what Horc is making) and only asks for 6M... I'm I the only one here that isn't comfortable giving an injury prone player like Hemsky that kind of money, likely long-term?

We're already paying Horcoff millions every year to sit on the IR.

    ReplyDelete

Honestly, I'm quite impressed that Steve hasn't managed to mess it up yet by trading our bad players for something more useful...

  38. Chicken or egg?

I'm not a big believer that goaltenders are solely responsible for their W-L record. Check out his individual stats: GAA and SV% are all good for most of those years in question. Toss out his three-game 15yo season in the Dub, and you only have one season (his 16yo season) where he's under .912. Fast-forward to his pro career, he has a good year in the ECHL, then one full season and one partial season with the AHL's worst team, in which he still stayed around .905 as a 22-23yo, which I'. pretty satisfied with. Then last year he puts up a .915 and earns a spot in the NHL, where he's back to playing behind horrifying defence and middling-to-poor offensive support. He had some weak numbers last year in a small sample, but this year he's doing much better.

Looking at all the numbers, and not just the ones that rely on all 20 guys, in areas of the game the goalie has essentially no contribution to, I'd say Dubnyk hasn't been the problem for any of his teams.

    ReplyDelete
  39. And since we mentioned Pogge, let's see here...

    2003-04 (17) Prince George 17-18-2 2.83 .900
    2004-05 (18) Prince George 10-9-2 2.80 .891
    2004-05 (18) Calgary 14-12-3 2.29 .917
    2005-06 (19) Calgary 38-10-6 1.72 .926

How much of that is development and how much of that is playing behind a much, much better team? (Calgary had the second-best record in the Dub in 2006.)

Furthermore, note the record post-trade to Calgary in 2005. Great goalie numbers, barely above .500. Then you look at the goal support, and see Calgary only scored 200 goals in 72 games, in the bottom third of the (admittedly large) playoff pool. (The next year, it was even lower, at 195 GF.) But those 12 losses were his fault, right? ;)

  45. he is going to ask for a couple million more than Horcoff.

That's one of the problems with Horc's contract - every team has an internal pay scale

So Smid will ask for Vandermeer money?

Yes, that's how multimillion deals are negotiated. "Waaa.... waaaa... but Horcoff makes so much. I don't care if Edmonton is offering more than Philly. Horcoff plays in Edmonton and he makes sooo muchh even though I'm better. Waaaa! I'm a stupid baby."

Hemsky's agent will ask for whatever he can get. The only question is whether Edmonton will offer as much or more and whether Hemsky is willing to stay in Edmonton for more, equal, or less money than other cities.

This also explains why NJ can't sign anyone better than Rolston for less than Rolston.

Our center position is the worst in the league even with Horcoff.

So you now agree that Cogs and Brule suck?

This is starting to make me crazy. If you did a draft of goalies from the early '90s through the end of the last decade who you'd have wanted starting for your team over that time, would Osgood go in the top-20?

If you can get into the HHOF without ever having been considered one of the very best at your position for a period of at least 5 years or so, they need to blow it up and start over again.

I'm sure there are some guys in there already who violate this rule, but there's no need to continue a trend if it's terrible.

  93. Comparing salaries to people in the same line of work to determine your worth is hardly a foreign concept.

Comparing salaries... around the league. And not just one player. NJ doesn't have to pay centers more because of Rolston, etc. This is so obvious, if you don't get it, you don't belong in a grownup conversation.

Horcoff is a mild overpay. But he's an excellent player. As we've discussed. (The bigger problem are injuries. If that doesn't stop soon, then his contract is an albatross.)

"The C and D without Horcoff and Whitney are league worst, no?"

Where would you rate them with Horc and Whitney?

Tough call. I'd say D is probably still bottom 5. If they could bring back Souray, then everybody is shifted down the depth chart. Maybe then around 13th or 15th worst.

C are pretty average with Horcoff in the lineup, though 3C is still dragging us down to below league average. Cogs and Brule are the problem. Replace one of them with Reasoner and we have an above average, middle of the pack C-corps. Fraser sucks too, but it's the 4th line so it matters not. (I sort of wonder if Fraser, Brule, Smid, and Foster have a little more in them. It's only been a half season, so maybe they're slumping.)

But really I haven't watched a lot of other team's games, so I'm just spit-balling.

  103. Would it kill the Oilers to actually hit someone tonight?

    ReplyDelete
  104. Oh yeah, Omark and Reddox would have some chemistry from playing in OKC.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Reddox!!!!! Rolls out of bed and executes!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  106. OMG that was disgusting.

    Tic-tac-toe... Omark-REDDOX?!-Brule.

    Wow.

    ReplyDelete
  107. That line is going to be legendary.

    Sample size too small?

    ReplyDelete
  108. It's the ORB line.

    Doctor Venture has unleashed it.

    ReplyDelete
  109. It's the BRO line. BRO's before HO's!

    ReplyDelete
  110. Anyone have a stream that works that is unlikely to be blocked by a companies blockin program? I am dying here listening only to the game.

    ReplyDelete
  111. "Our kids end up broke"

If the money is borrowed within Canada,
    rather than by furriners,
Our Kids end up just as rich as they are broke.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Not like they REALLY wasted that money.

It's still better than any of the shit show for teenagers with the same plot over and over again.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I don't know some would say the Oilers are a shit show with the same plot over and over.

    ReplyDelete
  114. That Canadian Jersey Shore copycat show on Much or MTV shot in Ontario undoubtedly received money from the same pot.

The tip money from what CBC execs pay for lunch with taxpayer dollars is probably more than what Katz and Edmonton received.

You guys don't seem to know who is really screwing you.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I had the chances at 2-8 and with the blender on high the top two lines look way out of sync.

Two really good shifts preceded the goal from the 67 line so that's a good sign.

The 13 line plus 2-58 pairing got drilled chances-wise.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Fun period to watch. Reddox is a better player than Jacques, I hope Tom Renney agrees.

Re: money for television, etc. One of the best things about government money for that kind of thing is that at some level it gives entry level talent a chance to earn a living.

Way back in 1980, the government had a program that allowed my radio station (CKGY in Red Deer) to hire me and have half of my salary paid for a period of one year.

There were likely more talented people available, but the program gave me a year to prove my worth.

So, maybe it's just a rich getting richer story. But maybe there's something good happening too.

    ReplyDelete
  117. So, maybe it's just a rich getting richer story. But maybe there's something good happening too.

This is exactly what is wrong with godot10's ridiculous argument. This money does go to worthy media arts from time to time. For the Oilers to get it for their informercial is awfully hard to defend.

    ReplyDelete
  118. You are missing my point. It's providing employment for media arts people in Edmonton, rather than in Toronto or Vancouver. The show is no worse than lots of other junk that gets funded in Toronto or Vancouver.

    ReplyDelete
  119. And these types of shows are just TSN copycatting ESPN and the NFL Network and HBO.

    ReplyDelete
  120. It seems like Cogliano has been victimized for a goal the last 4 games.

    ReplyDelete
  121. You know, the most painful thing about this game is watching not our defence, not our centres, but having to contrast the Red Wings' power play with the Oilers'.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Isn't NK's back due to explode?

Would it do any harm for DD to get every 3rd start?

    ReplyDelete
  123. So far 13 has thrown a 3 on 1 pass to nobody, dropped a pass to Hall who was about 5 feet away from being onside, and now he just got absolutely schooled by Bertuzzi...

Bad night for a bad hockey player.

    ReplyDelete
  124. We have no idea why the credit is there. Without knowing the whole story it's tough to criticize. Maybe it is just the hiring of 2 interns. Maybe it is a whole lot more or a whole lot less. My economics are naturally against taxpayer funding, but I will say that there are a lot of struggling technical people down here in the Calgary area that had the rug pulled out from them when Stelmach cut back the incentives.

You can call that a misallocation of resources getting rectified, and you'd probably be right. These kinds of people are handy though and when something local needs to be done it means the production, which has such an effect on message in the cinematic arts, will not be in the hands of others.

    ;o)

    ReplyDelete
  125. So the Detroit commentator pointed out that our shutdown d-pairing, vs Zetterberg/Franzen/Holmstrom is... 49 and 77.

    Yup.

The best we have is a guy whose brain takes a vacation for weeks at a time, and a near-rookie.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Trade Penner or Hemsky for Patrice Bergeron.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Is anyone else tired of Kurtis Foster yet?

    ReplyDelete
  128. Wow, Reddox watched him go right on by for that goal.

Emulating Cogliano is not a good way to impress the fan base(coaches don't seem to mind).

    ReplyDelete
  129. 2 and 26 were clowned on that goal. Itwould have been nice if the forwards could have slowed them down through the neutral zone but that was bad defending.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Fuck. Just sit the Foster and Vandermeer pairing. The consequence could not be worse than leaving them in the rotation.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Wow, then Reddoox copies cogliano's ability to finish.

2 and 26 look terrible. Horrible play by 2 on that giveaway.

    ReplyDelete
  132. What was that one liner from MacT about Hemsky, turnovers and donuts?

    ReplyDelete
  133. godot -I do know who's screwing me. Its people who think the gov't should be involved in everything and then point to the administrative costs associated with that involvement as the problem.

When the gov't gets involved producing what offends me, it allows more people to partake of the abuses that offend you.

(Federal funding for the porn reality shows that used to be on Showcase was easily the most offensive.)

Where do I go to get my (tax) money back?

John Deer - debt ain't wealth. Imagine you had loaned me $40MM. I then use it to make Ishtar II, which flops worse than the original. I can assure you that you can not count on my obligation for your retirement.

What is so offensive about your position is that one generation chooses to squander the money on crap and thinks that its okay to leave the obligation to their kids. This money was not spent on infrastructure or education (invested) it was wasted on a commercial for a billionaire to stay connected to his youth by enabling inept egomaniacs to re-live their glory days. Nothing of value was created with this expenditure.

LT - yes some good does come from it, but we are now in a situation where spending is equated with economic health and what the money is spent on is of no concern.

spoiler - the US military is easily the world's largest 'workfare' program. They employ good folks too. What could the world have if those resources were directed elsewhere?

    ReplyDelete
  134. Hemsky has looked real bad so far.

He's got four blatant giveaways from my eye.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Omark has more hits by my count than Jacques.

    3 to 1.

    ReplyDelete
  136. As bad of a night as I've see from 83 in a long time.

I have the chances at 8-20 over 40 min and I'm looking forward to this one being over.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Deano,
That's my point. The premise behind funding of the tv and Film industry lies in security. It is at least threefold:

-Bread and circuses. We all watched and are engaged. Many will watch the same thing again.
-National identity, propaganda, etc. Known since Hitler (who through Riefenstahl gave us the whole genre of sports films by the way) visual stories are powerful tools to the state and the status quo
    -cultural warfare

    Please, please make Ishtar 2.

    ReplyDelete
  138. With all of 6-10-14 on the IR and 4 looking his age it's times like these I wish the season was already over.

    ReplyDelete
  139. And as I publish that comment I get, "Interac, the Canadian way to pay."

    ReplyDelete
  140. There really is no point to JFJ and tonight emphasizes it. I like Reddox but he is what he is.

He's still twice the player JFJ is. Omark too.

    Time to cut him loose.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Dennis,

If your chances counts get a little loopy over the next month or two, I understand.

I'd be drinking straight out of the gin bottle too.

    ReplyDelete
  142. What Dennis, the season is not even half over yet.

And we're in our fifth year of boring shitty hockey.

Not sure what your complaint is ;)

    ReplyDelete
  143. And Ferraro echoes nearly every Oiler fan's lament about the PP.

    ReplyDelete
  144. The one positive I can draw from this game so far is that Omark and Hall are desperate to win.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Peckham from Gagner. Very strong play by Gagner to make it happen.

Add him to my list of kids that don't quit.

    ReplyDelete
  146. That celebration can apply to Peckman's first NHL goal a while back.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Kris

Sitting in Phoenix and checked LT to see comments on the game. Saw your comment that Horcoff was a minor overpay. Sweet jesus........was that a test to see if we were still paying attention. Did you think that our $7 million dollars last year was a good investment? The $6.5million this year? Because when he is 36 and we are still paying him a cap hit of $ 5.5 million I expect that "mild overpay"is going to be redefined as a clog on our payroll.

Agree though damn good second line center

    Godot

It is never good when government money is used to produce Infomercials for an entity that is using tax dollars at the same time as they are asking for a $ 350 million public subsidy

    ReplyDelete
  148. Peckham looks a whole lot more interested in scoring then Smid ever did. We have a real player there. What a delight he is to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  149. John, you're forgetting:

They don't want us just to build the arena for them. That's not enough these days.

No, they want 100% of the revenue.

    ReplyDelete
  150. How many times tonight have we been unable to get a pass through the first forevchecker?

    ReplyDelete
  151. Peckham really looks quite good.

Nice instincts on the goal obviously but in the second the Wings had the Oilers pinned and he read the play and stepped in and broke the cycle and then cleared the zone calmly.

Plus he abuses everyone including Zetterberg and Franzen.

Biggest surprise of the season is his emergence.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Officiating looks familiar tonight. It's the Red Wings!

    ReplyDelete
  153. Teddy Peckman has been one of the few bright surprises since the injuries started piling up.

Plays hard every night. A real value for a 3rd round pick.

    ReplyDelete
  154. BD,
Peckham's development makes such a big difference to a team in rebuild mode. If we get lucky with Petry and Plante, we could have a heckuva team in couple of years. Throw in Marincin...

    ReplyDelete
  155. Nice to see Petry having a nice calm night as well.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Jacques just had a good hit.

    I had to look twice.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Jon, it's the reason why the Wings don't need an enforcer.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Petry is definitly a work in progress, but you can see that he SHOULD be a player.

He's made a bunch of plays with his long reach and plays a pretty smooth, yet physical game.

Once the Game slows down for him, he will be here for a long time.

    ReplyDelete
  159. The reffing has been bad (all season and for most teams) but I've been OK with it in this game. I can't imagine getting a lot of calls against the Wings but we've gotten away with a few things this game too. Also it seems like so often our stagnant PP takes more away from us than it adds

    ReplyDelete
  160. I can't count how many time Oilers have had sticks chopped out of their hands this game.

    ReplyDelete
  161. And Petry's an excellent skater. He's made a couple of reads tonight I didn't expect. I think there's a chance he never goes back.

    Terrible break is right, Ray.

    ReplyDelete
  162. SpOIler - yeah its huge. Kid is big, physical, he's smarter and better with the puck than anyone expected.

He's playing against everyone and he looks fine.

Is he a top four guy? Could be.

Compare him to Smid or Greene at similar points (Dennis referred to Greene the other night I think).

IMO if Omark could emerge as a top nine guy it would have a similar effect.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Move Smid to forward so he can out it in the other teams net for once.

A blatant interference on Petry goes uncalled

    ReplyDelete
  164. Wings with 3 pick plays there. They're masters at it.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Well the Oilers screwed my loss by less than 2. Jerks.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Now that's just effing retarded. Oh well... it's Detroit. And draft lotteries don't win themselves.

    Le sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Two points...

#1) How many of those "HHOF!" wins have been like this? Play like shit, but your team is spectacular, so what's it matter?

#2) Man do I ever hate watching the Wings get call after call after fucking call.

    ReplyDelete
  168. And then he falls down lol the kiss of death eh?

I know Ty mentioned Terry Jones on Twitter, anyhow for all of you non twits Jones has been pretty adamant that Lander is pencilled in as the #3 centre for next season.

    Fwiw

    ReplyDelete
  169. "Way back in 1980, the government had a program that allowed my radio station (CKGY in Red Deer) to hire me and have half of my salary paid for a period of one year."

Good for you. But that's just a happy personal ending to a government handout, stolen from productive taxpayers, and given to the owners of CKRD. i.e. corporate welfare.

    ReplyDelete
  170. 'draft lotteries don't win themselves'

    Beauty.

    ReplyDelete
  171. I'm guessing LT has become a productive taxpayer since 1980, partly due to that stolen money.

    ReplyDelete
  172. Art - LT's subsidized internship could be interpreted as investment in skills development.

Not all gov't spending is a waste but the Oil Change series certainly is.

    ReplyDelete
  173. KLowe and Tambi are doing all they can to draft #1 but those bastards in Jersey are playing for keeps. TO, not worried. NYI, I think Garth Snow can out manage us, but damn now that Marty Broduer is trying to lose, who kmew he'd even be good at that

    ReplyDelete
  174. I know Mickey Redmond wouldn't like this but the Wings are the worst team I've seen all year in terms of being grabby and hooking and holding all the goddamn game.

And, yeah, I liked a couple of little things from 58 as well. There were a couple of plays that he broke up and was able to skate out of danger and these are things he should be able to do more and more.

49 has been a great revelation, too. Awhile back he struggled but it was covered up by some nice play by 77 but tonight he played a great game and looks every bit like a kid who'll be way more than a goon.

Brutal night by 83 as it looked like he was using 22's hands.

The 3-2 goal made the third period enjoyable but the Oilers didn't record chance between the score being 3-3 and 5-3 so they really were never in the game.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Brutal night by 83 as it looked like he was using 22's hands.

Hah. And yet he ends up with a two-point night. Puck gods, and all that.

    ReplyDelete
  176. Man, Foster on the point shot on the PP is rooted to one spot. With the shooting lane blocked just close your eyes and blast. Oy

    ReplyDelete
  177. The Omark line actually carried the play a number of times. Passed and everything unlike the others. Half way through the season and it's still individual effort. Dare I say bad coaching? This carrying the puck into three man coverage is really depressing, yet it happens all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  178. Deano, your position on "Oil Change" doesn't get better each time you state it.

Penner didn't even break a sweat tonight. Brutal. Is that Heatley trade still on the table?

Nice quote from Mike Babcock in the pregame when asked about the Oilers. 'They have some nice talent and will get some good picks this year, which is important. I'm not supposed to say this but if you get too good, too fast, you don't get good enough'.

    Words to live by Tambo.

    ReplyDelete
