The Edmonton Oilers recalled Linus Omark and Liam Reddox today. I believe this might be the beginning of the end for JF Jacques as an Edmonton Oiler. Omark gets the call because Jordan Eberle will miss a few games due to injury (just a few though, Eberle is a superhero after all); Reddox gets the call because the Oilers have some real issues with their bottom 6 forward group.
Jacques can hammer, Reddox can play. The Ginger brings with his a strong resume filled with hard work and results.
- Reddox is tied for 2nd in AHL short handed goals (4).
- Reddox is tied for 2nd in AHL goals (18).
- Reddox is 10th in league scoring (37gp, 18-15-33).
- Reddox is tied for 9th in AHL plus minus (+14).
- Reddox is 3rd in AHL shots on goal (143).
- Kelly Buchberger: "Night in and night out, he's been our Ryan Smyth. He goes to the net all the time. He's used in every situation. Last year in Stockton (ECHL) he didn't play a lot. He's a surprise. Now it looks like he has a chance to make it. He's our Ryan Smyth the way he works in practices and the games. I've been at the rink early and who walks in the door before eight, for a 10 o'clock practice? Liam-- so he can start working out. He competes, plus he's got skill, lots of skill. You know how Smytty drives to the net, burying that shoulder? Well, Liam does a lot of those little things, too. He's made big strides in one year. I use him on the point on the power play and when we're down five-on-three, he's the forward I send out."
- OKC coach Todd Nelson: “He’s a big part of our team. He does everything out there. He kills penalties, he’s on power plays, he creates a lot of scoring opportunities with his speed. He’s just a solid, all-around player. I don’t know if he’s the fastest (skater in the AHL) but he’s right up there. He’s got that ability, he’s got that extra gear where he can pull away from guys. There are a lot of fast guys in the NHL and there are a lot of fast guys in this league, but he’s in the upper echelon of quickness. He can skate, and that’s his biggest asset. He uses that to his advantage, and people can’t keep up with him."

The decision on 22 isn't tough, but he's still here which means its not a slam dunk for those who make the decisions.

You did well to get something to Rhyme with Couturier.
I've always liked Arson for Larsson if its all about rhymes.
If we're going to be treated to the Son of Tyler/Taylor, I think requiring partisans to rhyme their arguments would make the whole thing rather more bearable.

ReplyDeleteCan you really make the point that Reddox and Omark are not among the twelve best forward they can ice at this point? Is Colin Fraser really doing more for our bottom six than Reddox? Omark may be sloppy yet on the defensive side of the puck, but he at least can generate offense, and at this point, the team needs help on the PP almost as much as the PK. Would not be heart-broken if they were promoted full time.

Having a great time catching the WJHC streaming in Mexico, a great New Year's tradition! There are a number of sports bars here in Puerto Vallarta, but I was goofing around too much this afternoon to make it in time for the start of the game.

He plays an NHL winger's game already: Strong on the boards, protects the puck well, low risk hard passes, quick hands in traffic, smart PKer, can play on the 1st to the 4th line. Underrated skater as well. What a steal! Stu, you magnificent bastard.

Any strong non-Canadian team always gets somewhat overhyped at these international tournaments. It's boring to always name Canada as the favorites even if they bring the roster with the most first-rounders, so if it's close like this year, then the other team will be called the favorites. I think it's similar to the good chunk of the media who named Russia as the favorites at the Olympics because for the first time they an advantage with their top 6 forwards, but ignored the Canadian superiority everywhere else on the roster.

The Oilers didn't use 42 on the PK - though 85 has four shorties so he's more high-profile - so I'm not convinced 85 will get a lot of PK time because lately the Oilers have been going with 13-27 and then 16-28 and the PK hasn't been all that awful for the past few games I don't believe.
ReplyDeleteMaybe 89-85 gets a shot at the third pairing and then the 13 line gets out for the first post-PK shift.
I've long since given up wondering when the Oilers will drop the bottom six anchors or what justification they will or won't use but 22 would be awfully lucky if he sticks around once 14 comes back.
I wanted no part of Kassian on draft day, and remembered being horrified of the rumors the Oilers wanted him (pretty sure Traktor was a huge NO to Kassian as well... comp'd to Pouliot iirc, though he can speak for himself).

Stoll and Torres, both forced into top 6 roles on the perpetually under par Oilers - much like Horcoff the "first line centre", then both unceremoniously shipped out of town as damaged goods. And never replaced.
