Ginger Snaps!

The Edmonton Oilers recalled Linus Omark and Liam Reddox today. I believe this might be the beginning of the end for JF Jacques as an Edmonton Oiler. Omark gets the call because Jordan Eberle will miss a few games due to injury (just a few though, Eberle is a superhero after all); Reddox gets the call because the Oilers have some real issues with their bottom 6 forward group.

Jacques can hammer, Reddox can play. The Ginger brings with his a strong resume filled with hard work and results.
  • Reddox is tied for 2nd in AHL short handed goals (4).
  • Reddox is tied for 2nd in AHL goals (18).
  • Reddox is 10th in league scoring (37gp, 18-15-33).
  • Reddox is tied for 9th in AHL plus minus (+14).
  • Reddox is 3rd in AHL shots on goal (143).
Quotes (old and new)
  • Kelly Buchberger: "Night in and night out, he's been our Ryan Smyth. He goes to the net all the time. He's used in every situation. Last year in Stockton (ECHL) he didn't play a lot. He's a surprise. Now it looks like he has a chance to make it. He's our Ryan Smyth the way he works in practices and the games. I've been at the rink early and who walks in the door before eight, for a 10 o'clock practice? Liam-- so he can start working out. He competes, plus he's got skill, lots of skill. You know how Smytty drives to the net, burying that shoulder? Well, Liam does a lot of those little things, too. He's made big strides in one year. I use him on the point on the power play and when we're down five-on-three, he's the forward I send out."
  • OKC coach Todd Nelson: “He’s a big part of our team. He does everything out there. He kills penalties, he’s on power plays, he creates a lot of scoring opportunities with his speed. He’s just a solid, all-around player. I don’t know if he’s the fastest (skater in the AHL) but he’s right up there. He’s got that ability, he’s got that extra gear where he can pull away from guys. There are a lot of fast guys in the NHL and there are a lot of fast guys in this league, but he’s in the upper echelon of quickness. He can skate, and that’s his biggest asset. He uses that to his advantage, and people can’t keep up with him."
I think this will be an audition for Reddox. If he can help on the PK and in an energy role, it may mean JF Jacques is the player the Oilers risk waivers on when the next man needs to be farmed out.

  2. should say "first and foremost OKC Barons fans", obviously I cheer for them as well.

  3. Are there any good MacT quotes on him? He was up here for quite a while a couple of seasons ago and seemed to play ok.

    ReplyDelete
  4. You spelled "Reddix" in one of those stat lines, LT.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Let's see how the kid does.

But AHL competition and NHL competition are two different things.

They were when Reddox was a MacT favorite, there is now.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Musta: You can google "MacTavish top 2lines powerplay Reddox" and spend about 10 hours if you want. MacT liked him fine, the fanbase no so much.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Hoping the best for Reddox. If he was six feet he'd be in the NHL full time

    ReplyDelete
  8. MacT had a hilarious penchant for putting no-skill, bust-your-guts-out grinders on the power play.

    First Toby, then Ox.

    Well, it's hilarious in retrospect.

  9. Reddox turning out to be a decent 4th liner/PK'er would be a nice bonus for the future.

At least it's soething to look forward to.

When do we start cheering for losses in the "crappy play for Couturier?"

  10. Reddox and JFJ have to clear waivers going down.

v3.0 will probably send 23 back rather than make a tough decision on 22 or 85.

The decision on 22 isn't tough, but he's still here which means its not a slam dunk for those who make the decisions.

So Lowe was with Tambellini, MBS and the scouts at the WJR today.

Is there any other "President" of hockey operations who acts more like a GM than Lowe?

  11. Kris,

Its "Crash for Couturier" and I started when 6 went down.

    ReplyDelete
  12. WG,

I like a rhyme. But as long as we draft low, I'm okay with whatever you call it.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Red Ox? I like his style of play. He causes havoc on the forecheck and, as LT noted our bottom 6 is crap. Very surprised it took this long for him to get a call.

Q: Does Omark get to keep the air miles or do they stay in a team account for Tambo to use while assessing talent? Goodness!?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Kris,

Ahh, didn't realize there needed to be a rhyming component, thought alliteration could be substituted.

You did well to get something to Rhyme with Couturier.

I've always liked Arson for Larsson if its all about rhymes.

    ReplyDelete
  15. If we're going to be treated to the Son of Tyler/Taylor, I think requiring partisans to rhyme their arguments would make the whole thing rather more bearable.

    ReplyDelete
  16. "Bomb away for Courturier" is a possibility.

Can you really make the point that Reddox and Omark are not among the twelve best forward they can ice at this point? Is Colin Fraser really doing more for our bottom six than Reddox? Omark may be sloppy yet on the defensive side of the puck, but he at least can generate offense, and at this point, the team needs help on the PP almost as much as the PK. Would not be heart-broken if they were promoted full time.

  17. Hamilton drives to the net very well.

What about "Hang 'em high for Cout-eer-ee-eye."

    No?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Macguire missed how crucial Schenn, standing by the post, doing nothing was to Hamilton's goal¡

    ReplyDelete
  19. L.T,

Is that your Stauffer influenced pronunciation?

    ReplyDelete
  20. lol. I love that even though this game is home soil it's not even close to being a home game for the USA.

I hope that the Dark Knight gave MBS a real nice X-mas bonus this year. His picks seem to keep coming up roses.

I wonder how long it takes for Renney to fall in love with the Red Ox? 1 game, maybe 2 and we'll see Liam getting 8-10 minutes a night.

It's too bad for JFJ though, the kid just never really was given an opportunity to show what he can do.....

    {thick, thick sarcasm}

  22. Having a great time catching the WJHC streaming in Mexico, a great New Year's tradition! There are a number of sports bars here in Puerto Vallarta, but I was goofing around too much this afternoon to make it in time for the start of the game.

Oddly, I think I've seen just as many (or more) Oil/Canada games here as I generally do back in Edmonton, but it's not too hard to be convinced to have a couple beers and watch a game drinking $2 Pacificos.

  23. What a period of hockey that was. DOMINATION.

Reminded me of my old college roommate's favourite saying, "You want to get cocky? Let's play some hockey!" :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Fiercely played period. Fantastic pace. Full value for the money this game.

You can be as connected as you want to be these days, it seems like, especially in a resort town like Puerto Vallarta. The condo I'm staying in his high speed wifi, some of the sports bars here have HD tv's (with CDN satellite, I think, since TSN and Sportsnet are both available here for WJHC and EDM games)

  32. Glad to see a hard working kid get his chance.

When I arrived here I didn't think he owned to be in the NHL, but with how MGM has given opportunities left and right to guys who didn't deserver it,

    ''Hell, it's about time''.

    ReplyDelete
  33. @boopronger

It always made me laugh back in the day too. Helluva fun guy to room AND play hockey with AND our table hockey tournaments were epic!

    ReplyDelete
  34. No need to worry 'ey
    We're drafting Couturier

    ReplyDelete
  35. Nicely done by Team Canada so far. Hey, who drafted that kid, Hamilton? :p

    capitulate for Couturier?

    make tanking pay, draft couturier?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I hope they No-no these Yo-yos right out of Buffalo.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I wouldn't associate JFJ with being "risked" on waivers.

First time I saw Hamilton live I wasn't sold, but he's really growing on me. Just a solid player.
He plays an NHL winger's game already: Strong on the boards, protects the puck well, low risk hard passes, quick hands in traffic, smart PKer, can play on the 1st to the 4th line. Underrated skater as well. What a steal! Stu, you magnificent bastard.

    ReplyDelete
  38. We are way behind in our losing for Couturier to be of OUR choosing.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Finishing last isn't gay
    When you draft Couturier

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hamilton doesn't seem to get near enough icetime. He's been quite effective considering the role they are limiting him to.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm sort of disappointed that nobody's rhymed anything with "Nugent-Hopkins".

We are way behind in our losing for Couturier to be of OUR choosing.

We're on pace to get a ticket - whether it's the winning one remains to be seen. As long as we don't finish 29th, that is - I have it on good authority that the 29th place team has a 0% chance of winning.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Really surprised at the Americans. They can skate, but not with the puck. I bet there's been 15-20 clean pokechecks by Canadian D on American forwards on the rush.

Did they play over their head last year? This team should be even better than last year souldn't it?

Canada has played close to a perfect positional game. MacT would be impressed.

    ReplyDelete
  43. "We gotta bunch of Mary Poppins, but it'll be worth it when we pick Ryan Nugent Hopkins."

    No? Too Pat Quinn?

    ReplyDelete
  44. You're rhyming like Barbara-Ann Scott out there, LT.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Agreed LMHF,
Hamilton was rolling in the 1st and saw his ice time dwindle since then.

Americans will get shut out of the medals playing against the Swedes like this ... after being the so called favorites.

    ReplyDelete
  46. My two entries:

    Hope we get Larsson
    Many years of bad hockey
    Leads to great new team

    No Nugent-Hopkins
    Edmonton a real bad team
    Sean Couterier!

    ReplyDelete
  47. One and done for Team USA. That rivalry IS growing but I guess I'm old school, Canada v Russia for gold still has a certain ring to it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Disappointing and embarrassing to see the young men and coaching staff representing our country couldn't be bothered to even mouth the national anthem.

    ReplyDelete
  49. one of the best things that could happen to this franchise would be to have JFJ picked off waivers. ergo, it'll never happen. Send him down; allow him to make the team again next year

    face palm!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Any of you watching the score of the islander flame game? Isles winning 4-1 in the second without Roli.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Tambo's chocking on Baskin Robbins so he can draft Nugent Hopkins...

    ReplyDelete
  52. Grease Trap: They don't sing it until the Gold medal is won. It's a tradition going back a few years now.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Gogliano, I know you wanted to try too
But what made you think of Haiku?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Any strong non-Canadian team always gets somewhat overhyped at these international tournaments. It's boring to always name Canada as the favorites even if they bring the roster with the most first-rounders, so if it's close like this year, then the other team will be called the favorites. I think it's similar to the good chunk of the media who named Russia as the favorites at the Olympics because for the first time they an advantage with their top 6 forwards, but ignored the Canadian superiority everywhere else on the roster.

    ReplyDelete
  55. All of Omark's impudent hoggin's

  57. The Oilers didn't use 42 on the PK - though 85 has four shorties so he's more high-profile - so I'm not convinced 85 will get a lot of PK time because lately the Oilers have been going with 13-27 and then 16-28 and the PK hasn't been all that awful for the past few games I don't believe.

Maybe 89-85 gets a shot at the third pairing and then the 13 line gets out for the first post-PK shift.

I've long since given up wondering when the Oilers will drop the bottom six anchors or what justification they will or won't use but 22 would be awfully lucky if he sticks around once 14 comes back.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I wanted no part of Kassian on draft day, and remembered being horrified of the rumors the Oilers wanted him (pretty sure Traktor was a huge NO to Kassian as well... comp'd to Pouliot iirc, though he can speak for himself).

.... I'm pretty sure I was very, very, wrong.

Kid is big, fast, strong, mean and skilled.

    That's a very rare combination.

    --

Reddox? Nice. Red Ox has to be the worst nickname of all time, but the kid will help the team.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Yay Isles! Good work men, keep it up for the rest of the week. And give us Tavares for Cogliano.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Strome has probably made the biggest move up the charts, year over year, but I thought he played RW?

    ReplyDelete
  61. This is a good one for the Isles:

Lying dishonest floppin for Ryan Nugent Hopkins.

    Suck on that Shakespeare.

    ReplyDelete
  62. OOOhh:

Lyin indecent floppin for Ryan Nugent Hopkins.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I hope Gingerballs sticks on the team. That'll mean either JFJ, Stortini, MacIntyre, Fraser or Strudwick will be risked on waivers whenever we are forced to make that decision. I'm OK with that. Much more OK with that than risking Reddox on waivers.

    ReplyDelete
  64. nothing rhymes with Strome. What a rip off!

Sad for Saad isn't really a rhyme, I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Yay Isles! Good work men, keep it up for the rest of the week. And give us Tavares for Cogliano.

I think you may have jinxed them. Dipietro left injured. Of course they just traded Roloson away. So they have Nathan Lawson who just played his first game of the season (in any league, by the looks of it.)

    They'll be hard to catch.

Dammit - I totally should have had that one.

    ReplyDelete
  69. WG - its called 'Strudwicking the team' - removing every hope of winning through the addition of a lovable, but hopeless player. The Oilers have mastered it this year.

Note - the 'ome' words are all because Speeds said nothing rhymes with Strome.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Damn - Nome (Alaska) was my next one ( you can see Russia from there)

  71. Playing the Gnomes in the hope of drafting Strome

    ReplyDelete
  72. Schitzo might have a winner.

    It rhymes, it incorporates Strudwick.

I tried using roam for awhile, i could come up with nothing even as good as "slowly fade away for Couturier", which doesn't even strike me as all that good.

Somewhat apt, perhaps, but not funny.

  78. According to Scott Reynolds at C&B, Reddox won't need to clear waivers unless he plays at least ten games with the Oilers. His interpretation looks right to me, but I'm no CBAologist.

    ReplyDelete
  79. SS - that's correct by my understanding of things as he already cleared waivers earlier this season.

  83. Who was the last bottom six player to make any kind of an impact? Pisani?

    Stoll. Reasoner. Torres.

Oh and any guy playing on an actually successful team.

I believe it is referred to as 'a balanced roster'.

And I sure picked a bad night to interact with the family and stay off of here. Classic poems/rhymes (note, classic often means horrific too).

    ReplyDelete
  84. Stoll and Torres, both forced into top 6 roles on the perpetually under par Oilers - much like Horcoff the "first line centre", then both unceremoniously shipped out of town as damaged goods. And never replaced.

What's that now, five seasons ago?

    ReplyDelete
  85. As if this season hasn't turned out to be some kind of walk down the Trail of Tears for the fans...

Tambellini's absolutely got until opening night 2011-2012 to present the coaches with a semblance of a balanced roster - or else this team seriously needs a new GM.
