Uh-Oh

The Edmonton Oilers made a couple of moves today. This morning, they sent gifted winger Linus Omark back to the AHL in hopes he'll learn a little more about minding the store. Later in the day, the club recalled Shawn Belle from OKC. On the face of it that's no big deal, Belle showed well in his cup of coffee earlier this season and he's a better NHL defenseman than Jason Strudwick right now.

The worry comes from something PDO (and perhaps others) pointed out: Tom Gilbert played his final shift last night between 19:16 and 20:00 of the final period. Meaning he didn't play any of the overtime. Here are the pairings in the OT:
  • 0:00-0:33 Kurtis Foster
  • 0:00-0:33 Ladislav Smid
  • 0:33-1:48 Theo Peckham
  • 0:33-1:23 Jason Strudwick
  • 1:23-1:52 Jeff Petry
  • 1:48: 2:22 Jason Strudwick
  • 1:52-2:26 Theo Peckham
  • 2:26-3:14 Kurtis Foster
  • 2:33-2:42 Ladislav Smid
  • 2:42-3:20 Jeff Petry
  • 3:14-3:20 Ladislav Smid
  • 3:20-end of game Kurtis Foster
I think that's right. So, we have Gilbert (easily the best defenseman on the club) not playing a second in OT, although he was on the ice at the end of the game. On top of that, there are the curious two final shifts of Smid's evening. Thet lasted 9 and 6 seconds, respectively. That could have been due to a powerplay.

Could be nothing, but worth keeping track of in the next 24 hours.

  1. I would just like to say that I was wrong for endorsing the Strudiwck signing.

    Thank you.

  2. Strange to be sure, but hopefully nothing.

During Stauffers hit on The Team this morning, he mentioned that 77 "tweaked" something in the third last night, but it was unrelated to the knee that caused him to leave the Dys game early and he would play tomorrow night against Calgary. No cause for concern apparently.

  3. Dennis:

Lapierre already has 104 hits this year in 34 games.

He had 164 hits last year and 130 the year before.

In 2008/2009 he took 987 draws and was 52.3%

He has size at 6'2 and will hit you from behind like Matt Cooke and mouth off you until you drop the gloves and take a penalty and then not fight you like Shawn Avery.

    Opportunity missed imo

  5. Kind of ironic, but I just happened to glance over at LT's post tags. he has exactly one post with the tag, "actual NHL players." Kind of reflective of the roster, I guess.

We just might get to see Struds, Belle, and Petry play together if there's any merit to the concerns over 77. Sounds exciting!

From Staple's blog, there seems to be no love for Sam-i-am after last night's game (backlash in the comment section).

Well, Tambo likes to stand pat during the season and save the summer for getting anything done, so all arrows point to a Couturier lotto ticket.

  6. Trak: still not overly impressed.

y didn't you point out his faceoff stats from the last two years? have they been cut down?

yeah, he may have been a candidate for the bottom 2 pivot slots but then again so are you and I given what's currently with the big club.

  7. Why is Gilbert so overrated? I'm serious, people act like he's a norris candiate around here yet he defend worth his ass

  8. Why is empiricism so underrated around here? I'm serious, people act like the only way to reach a conclusion is to reach deep up their own colons and substitute confidence for evidence yet there reams of data available.

  10. I certainly hope Gilbert is not injured because when I said Whitney's injury was debilitating, I did so predicated on Gilbert playing 28 minutes a night. Without Gilberts ability to move the puck, we might reach 30th overall by the end of January

  12. Imagine another 1st overall pick? Seriously, it would be TOTALLY worth whatever pain we would feel during the next few months.

I haven't seen a talent as prodigious as Hall since Messier left town. And it feels damn good.

Mr. Gilbert, I hope you're alright, but if you're hurt for awhile, I hope if contributes to us picking 1st overall this June.
