When You See A Chance

Stand up in a clear blue morning
Until you see what can be
Alone in a cold day dawning
Are you still free can you be
When some cold tomorrow finds you
When some sad old dream reminds you
How the endless road unwinds you
While you see a chance take it
Because it's all on you
-Steve Winwood, Will Jennings

Five years from now, Taylor Hall and a plethora of young men will still be Edmonton Oilers (barring insanity or injury). Those 5 seasons are not promised to Steve Tambellini, and his decision-making in the next few weeks will go a long way to determining just how long he'll be an Oiler manager. Here are 10 things you could see today:
  1. Andrew Cogliano traded to a second organization. He isn't progressing, but he had a solid resume coming in and a change of scenery might be just what is needed for this player.
  2. Oilers acquiring a faceoff man, a penalty killer, someone capable of posting 30 points and outplaying the opposition. Someone like Martin Hanzal.
  3. Sheldon Souray dealt for an NHL defenseman, someone who can step right into the lineup and deliver quality minutes on the 1st or 2nd pairing.
  4. JDD traded for a pick or a prospect. It is time for ST to make a decision on the goaltending. Should Khabibulin be unavailable in the fall, there will still be other options out there.
  5. Oilers acquire a physical left-winger. With Moreau gone, the club can offer only Ryan Jones as a possible 3line solution. Andrew Ladd is apparently in play, he would be a quality solution and is still young enough (24) to grow with this team.
  6. Oilers acquire a veteran right-winger. This is the Pisani spot, and there are some free agents available for the position. This is a slot where the Oilers could have used Pouliot, but that bird has flown.
  7. Enforcer. Bob Stauffer has been on this for awhile, and he's connected so chances are the first free agent signing will be an intimidator.
  8. An NHL defenseman to go with Whitney-Gilbert, Smid-Souray replacement, Vandermeer-Peckham. This would force all of the prospect defensemen down the depth chart and make Peckham a 6-7, meaning the club could withstand injury and ineffectiveness without calling Okla City. This has been an ongoing problem for the farm team for many years.
  9. Find a stud D prospect of the future. If someone comes calling for Gilbert Brule, consider it if the offer includes a high end prospect who could become a cornerstone for the blue. Oilers lack a solution in this area.
  10. Fix the farm team. Sign some mid-level AHL free agents in the next few weeks, giving them the chance to be this year's Ryan Potulny. Oilers really need some help on the farm.

NOTE: Many of you have emailed me this morning (and posted on this blog) in regard to my signing a free agent deal with Oilers Nation. It is true. There are some details to be ironed out (I posted 71 times in June and have agreed to deliver 20 items to ON each month) but this is the beginning of a transition period. I will still be posting at this blog for the forseeable future, so please stop by when you get a chance.

My reasons for joining ON are both public and private. Oilers Nation wasn't the first to come calling with financial opportunity, but they were the most persistent and lucrative. I have been having many issues with blogger, and can't devote the time and energy required to move it. I suspect this would have happened sooner or later, and one usually goes with what they know; I've known Jason Gregor for a long time now and he was certainly a huge part of the process.

I am smart enough to know that the real appeal of Lowetide is in the quality of comments from the reader/posters. I am hopeful you will try Oilers Nation on for size (I suspect my first post will be tomorrow, have some things to do and need to figure out how to post) and can promise to deliver the same prose as you've seen here for these years.

I have enjoyed your comments and insight, and feel that we've become friends along the way. Here's hoping that continues down the dial. All the best,

LT.

  1. Congrats on the new gig LT. Well deserved. See you over at ON.

  2. LT - Glad to see you going pro with what is, in my humble opinion, the highest quality hockey blog in the history of Al Gore. Dare I say that you're the accomplished figrehead of our happy hockey family, and I look forward to coming over for awkward family dinners on a daily basis for many years to come.

  3. LT, if anyone deserves to make some coin off their blogging it is you. I check this blog every morning and will keep doing so.

    Best. Blog. Ever!

  4. LT: Looking forward to following your writing here and at ON.

Besides Motin, Plante, Petry, and Chorney who will round out the blueline in OKC? Could this be where a couple veteran minor leaguers are hired?

  5. While I'll admit it will be a bit weird to see Lowetide posts at ON, I'm very happy for you LT, you certainly deserve some financial reward for all your hard (free)work over the past few years (how long has it been anyway?)

This site is always my first visit daily and although I frequently visited ON previously, I will certainly make it a regular stop with this news. Which is what I'm sure they would like to hear, and more like me is good for not only ON but yourself.

There is no other hockey blogger I respect more then you.

    Congratulations.

  6. LT-

    Longtime listener-first time caller.

I've read your blog daily since the 06 run. Great insights and an excellent way to follow my oilers. Introduced to 'the math' instead of the 'saw them good' methods. Hope all works out with ON, and agree that it's the comments and discussion from your posts that make it even more special.

The amount of work you've put in over the last few years is yeoman like- glad you're getting rewarded for it.

  7. Thanks for the kind words, folks.

Psyche: I think the Oilers need a veteran goalie (someone like Dany Sabourin), at least two defensemen (like Jake Taylor, Dean Arsene) and a whack of forwards (like Potulny, Linglet). There`s a finite number of veterans that a team can have, but lots of good players after that who can play in that league.

Basically, i`d like the Okla City team to be deep enough so that Plante could play 2nd pairing minutes and Chorney 3rd pairing + powerplay. Move them up the depth chart when they`re ready.

  10. Congrats LT. Living the dream. Posting on the oilers and getting paid for it. Well done sir. Essentially makes ON my first stop now (it was 2nd to your blog, so smart move on their part).

As for moves. I don't expect any moves by the Oil today, unless someone like Michalek or Hamhuis choose the Oil. i hope Tambellini is kicking the tires on some of the top end defenseman, but not offering overpays, but rather selling them on the top end young talent and building a dynasty that rivals the 80's. that is the sales pitch they need to talk about:
    - City that loves hockey. Win here and you are a god.
    - Top end young talent that sets the foundation for a stanley cup contender for the next decade (not quite accurate with free agency and the cap but you sell it that way)
    - New building that will include the top training facilities and environment in the league. This is an underrated part of the decision process for UFA's.
    - The intregal part that the top dman will play on the ice and in the room. Some guys want to know that they are immediately part of the leadership core and will be looked to be a huge part of the team going forward.

I don't consider hamhuis or michalek whale hunting, as long as we don't overpay. Stop selling ourselves short and offer a competitive offer but nothing more (like the Souray million dollar overpay). But at the end of the day I'd be happy with a Derek Morris to play in our top 4 on a 2 year deal. He's solid, physical and can play the PP or PK. a 2 year $3 mill deal solidifes our back end top 4 for the next 2 years, and allows us to keep Chorney int he minors and gives Petry another year or two of AHL seasoning.

This is my first stop every morning on the interweb. Thank you for all your work here. Best hockey/Oilers site ever produced, and that is saying something with all the different blogs out there.

I find ON a little too much "HF Boards" for me, but I am willing to give it a try in order to follow your stuff as well as JW's.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Congrats LT. Bless you and curse you at the same time, for churning out quality stuff daily that puts the hurt on my work productivity. I hope the rest of the "happy hockey family" follows you over to ON. Even wierd uncle Hunter.

  23. Congrats Lowetide, happy for you and Oilernation, this takes them to the next level in my opinion. This was the most unbearable season ever as an Oiler fan, but your insight and observations helped get us all through it. We're on the way back, and look forward to ejoying your work on ON. Truly amazing how ON and Lowetide have become our first stop for our Oiler fix, then we fill in the blanks (maybe) on the mainstream media sites.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Congrats LT. You really deserve a lot for making this site the "must read" for all thins Oilers.

It will be interesting to see what the "Summer of Steve" serves up next. So far I have to admit to being pleasantly surprised. If he can continue to do the little things needed to keep rebuilding the foundation it would be a major step in the right direction.

Although I must say, I'm not convinced that Souray for Brewer is a good move - other than financial reasons (getting out 1 year earlier from that contract). Seems like a laterral move at best.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Good for you LT, I hope the opportunity works out well for you!

This morning Moreau said "It was definitely time to move on. I need a fresh start. I need a team that's going to use me where I'm most valuable and I don't think that was the case the last few years. And my play suffered because of it. But no regrets. in the Ed. Journal.

What does he mean? Did he expect to be in the top six? Did he not like playing with younger players? Maybe he wanted to spend more time taking offensive zone penalties?

Following that he said "(Howson) was really the architect of that team. He made some key acquistions that got us to the final ... I don't think people realize how much he meant to that run. It's not just a coincidence that things went south when he left,"

Nice lob at KLowe there. Even if its justified, Moreau did nothing after 2006 and never took one bit of responsibility as captain.

Part of me wishes him well, the other part of me hopes that he finds himself on the farm team by mid-season so that he recognizes his own shortcomings.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Congrats. While I can understand why you are doing it, I can't say I'm thrilled - the quality and editorial style of your blog and their site almost couldn't be more different, and I anticipate a resultant dilution in the quality of the comments by the readers. Best of luck though.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Nothing wrong with your decision - is is YOUR decision. Might as well get some financial compensation for the hard, outstanding work.

I will be checking out posts on ON.

    Congrats.

  28. Glad to see your muse is cashing checks for you.

ON isn't quite the wild, wild west, hopefully the tone in the responses won't change much from here to there.

Also good to know that you will still post here for a while.

Kinda like Methadone for us junkies. Cold Turkey would be too cruel.

I think the Oilers will get their caveman and another D, but they don't necessarily get signed today. (Esp if the rumour is true and caveman is King from the Blues coming along with Brewer)

I'm not holding my breath for 3C. I think that ST thinks he filled it with Fraser.

  32. LT

I've been living abroad for 16 years now and largely relied on the Journal and Sun websites to follow the Oilers. In 2007 however, I followed a link from Staples' blog, discovered Lowetide, and never left.

The past couple of years have seen some of the least successful Oilers teams ever, but I've actually followed them more closely than at any other point in my life, largely because of your blog and the people who comment on it. I can't imagine being a fan without it.

Thanks for all you've given us. You can count me among the legion of loyal fans that will (I hope) follow you over to Oilersnation, apprehensive about the change, but grateful that you're finally being rewarded for all that you've given us over the years.

  35. Delighted you can make a dime off what are superlative efforts!! I am hooked and could not imagine not following you wherever you went.

I have been very pleasantly surpassed by the quality of "Tambi's" decisions all the way back to the decision to letting Quinn go. Like Fraser and Vandemeer trades, Nilsson buyout, qualifying offers etc but find a RH center that can win drws and kill penalties.

If he doesn't do that, whatever his progress, it will be like a pretty girl with broccoli stuck in her teeth....... pretty girl but!

  38. First off, congratulations of the move. I hope the quality of the comments stays high but at least we know the blogs themselves will.

"I still remember waking up, thinking someone had emptied an ashtray into my mouth, and then that horrible realization that your body needed water but your head was being held down by an anvil."

This. This is exactly how I would describe this morning.

  40. Dave: No, I have told Brownlee numerous times what I thought of his treatment of Lowe:) and now either he deletes all my posts over there or he asks it of Commendant Wayne:)

Note: one time he threatened me with physical violence if he we met:) but if I wasn't afraid of him when he was overweight I'm really not afraid of him now that he isn't:)

The deal with ON is they sold their soul so that Brownlee and Gregor could rule all and I hope for their sake -- and now LT's -- that it's profitable.

Gregor's messed up a few times with CBA posts and he goes nuts when you call him on it and Brownlee's just a miserable bag of dicks who loves deriding posters because Wayne allows him to do it.

I love reading LT's stuff but I could stop myself from reading it and posting on it if Brownlee's allowed to run roughshod.

So before I wasted my time I wanted to know what the deal is.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I've been thinking a great deal about Pisani and Strudwick and where they are going. I know there have been public statements about Pisani not being part of the future, but I think writing them out of the Oilers organization is folly.

Neither of them are going to command top dollar on the FA market, but both are slod role players (pisani more so, but health issues limit efectiveness).

Why not offer them both 2-way contracts for OKC. Maybe something like 1M/300k for Pisani to mentor the kids on the 2RW, and 750k/250K to play a solid physical game and be a locker room presence. Both could be called up for depth, and both have a place in the org still.

It's the kind of move that would go a long way to shoring things up in OKC, and provide real depth for the Oilers this coming season.

Our young guys will be on the job learning, and they’re going to have to be lead by guys who know about winning.”

  44. LT - What sets your blog apart is your content and your oversight of the posters. I am sure the content will continue to be top notch, but I fear that the 'come one, come all' aspect will disappear.

If ON doesn't work out, I think you should look into 'rolling your own' like Ty. I doubt it will be as lucrative as ON, but the 'culture' will be all you and that's a significant reason why we are all here.

I am glad to be considered your friend. Right back at ya'.

    Best wishes.

  45. 20 minutes to go. What time does Souray's NTC expire? Any word if Brewer has been asked to waive his?

    ReplyDelete
  46. On to hockey:

    - would 13 be a suitable replacement for Versteeg and then we could work something out with him and maybe something else for Ladd? Ladd would be an excellent start to a third line that can match.

Just for fun, throw out 13's '10 season and match his '08 and '09 years with Versteeg's '09 and '10 and what would it tell you? I imagine TOI and PPTOI would be a good place to start.

13 might be a guy who'd get into the 50 point strata if he got to play with either Sharp or Towes.

    - I like what the GM's are doing and the only problem with it really is it's burning years off the pacts of 10-27-83. As we're structured now we're super young up front and the D isn't fit for a playoff charge and maybe that's the best thing. Things would improve if we signed Michalek to a four or five year deal but I think that's highly unlikely.

But as poor off as we seem now for '11 we'll even be more so if we don't grab a very good D and vet RH pivot.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Versteeg to TO. Sorry if it's been mentioned already.

  48. Given what we know about our PK I'd rather have 34 back in the fold than 46 or even Ryan Jones for that matter.

In fact, fuck crust and jam and everything else and a 34-Fraser-78 4th line would have at least given us three PK options.

it seems like the 78 ship has sailed farther along than 34's and why not bring back 34?

  59. Its great to hear you're going to get paid, LT. I hope it's lucrative as hell, you deserve it.

I hope too, that the comment section over at ON is as informative and interesting as this one always seems to be.

Dennis, it seems to me that the problem with the comment section over there is too many people pot shoting the writers into a response, followed by endless MSM ass kissing by others. This can change easily though, if people can just use a little restraint when it comes starting stupid arguments about credibility, or personal agenda, and just focus on The Edmonton fricken Oilers all should fine.

  61. Congrats LT! This blog has become a second home for me on the Al Gore and the first place I turn to for Oilers related reading. Your effort over the last few years has been more than appreciated. I do hope you continue to post over here or somewhere other than ON because I would hate to see the community of posters here disappear or be subsumed by the unwashed masses at ON.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Quiz: Yeah, that's not a bad point. I've calmed down a lot -- it's true:) -- but I did and do believe that guys like Brownlee were afraid of Lowe and that's why he got such a free ride and I don't mind saying that. That rankles Brownlee and drives him nuts and leads him to threats of physical violence.

Gregor doesn't understand the CBA to the point that some of his posts allude and then people question it and he goes nuts. The first time a comments section was posted on a newspaper was the first time that sportswriters had to realize that no longer could they throw out opinions that were false without someone pointing it out.

Brownlee in particular circumvents that reality by deleting comments and Wayne has given him that power and that diminishes the site and leads to the ass-kissing which really doesn't further any kind of discussion.

Anyway, that's my last post on it.

    Good luck to LT.

You tried going to ON 22 months ago, and were there for a while. I know that during that time you had kept this website still updating.

  73. Tom: A few things. Some are personal, but among the issues we can talk about are:

    1. blogger drives me nuts
    2. The company I work for has no problem with me doing this as long as it doesn't impact my day job (and it won't. I have a great job).
    3. Controlling the comments and direction of this blog became a major issue.
    4. I looked into doing it myself (creating my own blog minus blogger) and it involved a lot of hours that I didn't have.

There are others, but they are all family items that wouldn't be of huge interest to anyone outside the lunatic asylum I'm sitting in. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  75. Congrats LT. Well deserved. Like many others, this is my go to site for Oiler info and I will certainly follow you over to ON. Your analysis is always spot on and the writing never fails to entertain. Your tone is always so conversational, reading one of your posts feels like talking with a friend over a couple pints.

I sincerely hope you have full editorial rights over at ON as it would be an absolute crime IMO if some pinhead felt himself worthy of editing your stuff. Hopefully the comments over there will retain the same sense of community and in-depth knowledge that you've engendered here. I am constantly amazed by the quality of the comments on here and find myself wondering why the Oil don't hire at least half a dozen of the regular posters on here as personnel/CBA consultants or capologists! lol

As for today, I'm pulling for the Oil to sign Lombardi, Nystrom & move out Cogliano or Brule for a Top 4 D-man.

BTW, can someone tell me why it's so important the Oil sign a right-handed centerman? I'm assuming it's relevant to the faceoff circle (and somewhat similar to baseball where you need a lefty or righty as the situation warrants for a favorable matchup).

With Brule being a righthanded centerman, it seems to me the club could sign Lombardi, put Brule on his wing and have the flexibility of both a right handed and left handed center on that line to take faceoffs. Of course, Brule would need to improve his faceoff skills, but can that skill not be learned and improved? Supposedly Sidney Crosby focused on improving that aspect of his game in recent years, so why couldn't a player like Brule?

  76. Tanguay back to Calgary. I really don't like what they're doing.

Best PP assist wingers since the lockout?

Tanguay is one of them. he has one bad year in TB because dip shits don't play him on PP. He gets 3rd line.

PP and !st line in Calgary. They just got Hemsky?

  77. LT,

For what it's worth, the two Oiler sites a have in my favourites folder is Lowetide and Oilers Nation.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Congrats LT. I know that keeping the comment section in line must be time consuming. Hopefully, your consistent and level headed posting at ON will help introduce some common sense thinking in some of the ON posters.

Even when I don't agree with your positions *cough* Pouliot :), I respect your point of view and understand your thinking. Bringing that to the masses could actually improve the knowledge of the Oiler's overall fan base.

    ReplyDelete
  79. While I'm absolutely delighted that you'll be getting paid for your writing LT, and offer my congratulations to that effect I supose I'm also rather apprehensive about your heading to ON. The quality and tone of the writing and the comments there have always had the tenor of a tabloid and I've very much enjoyed the reasonable and informed quality of your blog and comments.

  80. Weird that the Sens would throw big money at Gonchar when Meszaros was being shopped by the Lightning? Would've thought they would've backed the horse they know over a vet on the negative side of 35?

Volchenkov out. Rundblad and Gonchar in. The Sens certainly look improved on the backline. And in related news, Wade Redden continues to suck slough water in NY for big money. lol

  81. Chris: I think we'll see. I'm not going to change, but the ON folks are convinced that it'll have value over there.

    We'll see.

  84. Lowetide,

Congratulations on the new gig. For the last year and a half, your site has been a staple of my daily routine.

Between your blog and oilersnation, there are few who come even close to the quality and insight you deliver.

I'm glad to see that you can now make some money off of this, and ON is extremely lucky to have lured you in.

See you on the other side.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Rishaug is floating that we're potentially after Manny Maholtra and Curtis Foster. Maybe Tambelini has started reading the Oilosphere.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I avoid OilerNation like the plague. However, the problem there has always been that the writers really suck. (with the exception of jw, at least I think he is/was there. I was serious about not reading that site) I think that trickles down to the rest of their issues. Good luck LT.

    ReplyDelete
  87. so does Hamhuis get $4 mill per or more with michalek getting $4 mill?

and would anyone be upset about Hamhuis for 5 yrs at $4.5 mill? doubt he chooses the Oil, but i'd do that deal. it also opens up more places for Souray. also, with philly's move they need to shed salary. anyone we would want, or do we stay the course?

    ReplyDelete
  88. I tend to agree Rivers, Willis is good but infrequent there as he has two other blogs on the go. Aside from that Gregor sometimes has something interesting to say but the other writers...

  89. Congralutations LT, you're the first blog i've read day in and day out. And you're a complete stranger LoL. (jk) I'l see you on ON when your first post will be made.

(Now i have to create a username... flamingpavelbure? FPV? FPB?)

    ReplyDelete
  90. LT,

Am thrilled that you're going to make some coin off of your writing. And I will follow your writing even if you post at the gates of hell, which is, come to think of it, not far from ON, IMO.

I really think, stylistically, you're a better writer than anyone writing in the Alberta papers, by a long shot. And I don't just mean the sports pages. In fact, I really think you should try to write a book. You could format it to fit your style: brief chapters resembling posts, loosely organized, some math, some baseball, etc. Sort of a journal of your thoughts. There's nothing wrong with that kind of formatting in a book.

I am also a bit worried about what will happen to the comments page here or at ON. But then again, the comments page here has been headed a little bit downhill ever since "Coppernblue" siphoned off a lot of the mental energy posters who put a lot of time and effort into their posts. You don't get as many comments from JW, Bruce, Scott, and Derek. And Rivers, Quain, Slipper, Tyler and a few others seem to make most of their posts on other sites. Andy Grabia, Vic, and Mike W exist only in the ether now.

I think if you really want to make the ON comments page good, you should moderate the crap out of it. Clean crappy comments out of their constantly. If a comment isn't substantive, if it's just a one line "sqeeee" or whatever, kill it. If a comment is at all ad hominem, kill it.

But the ON guys wouldn't like that. People don't like their comments removed and would be less likely to return and hits are everything.

    Anyways, congratulations.

    ReplyDelete
  91. So fair to say that the Habs won't be signing Ellis?

I wonder if they'd like Souray back?

    ReplyDelete
  92. colby armstrong 3 yr deal in toronto as per mackenzie

    ReplyDelete
  93. I like the Tanguay signing. Calgary needs veterans who can score and play tough minutes to take one last crack at winning before Iginla's wheels fall off.

By that same token, I don't like the idea of dumping Regher. That Flames team was decent because of the depth at D, which was all about Regher playing the toughest opposition.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Bit of a rich deal for Armstrong but its not all that surprising that the Leafs would go after him. He's a Brian Burke style player. We could use a couple of those too.

    ReplyDelete
  95. That's a lot of money for Armstrong's role.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Versteeg, Kessel, and Armstrong will keep TO out of the basement.

I still don't know how they can build a contender after losing two firsts and a second, but we'll se how much free agency can buy.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Steve: No lol. Once again we don't want Souray back.

Think about it, we didn't signed him at your price the 1st time, and that's the reason we let him go.

Now you want to give it back broken and older? Damn.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Congratulations LT, let me add my voice to the chorus, you belong in the pros.

That said, often ON deteriorates into an in your face slam down in the comments section. Group wisdom and consensus doesn't emerge in such an environment. Rather chaos and bad feelings reign. In the end little men with tin badges step in to enforce the rules. Ulitmately their napoleonic insecurities make it a truly toxic place. ON is well on its way there.

Maybe your attitude will come to infect their site. I'd certainly hope so. When I am working with clients or teaching I often use your blog as an example of how the tone and style of the blogger can help shape the posts on a blog. You've made this a relatively safe place for a lot of crazed fans with lunatic ideas and outrageous opinions to think out loud. Yes, as Kris said, many of those posters have moved on to other blogs but you gave each of them a forum to float trial baloons and find their voice.

I am also with kris, and I imagine everyone here, when I say it is the quality of your writing that hooked me on this site and that will lead me to follow you to ON. I look forward to many more years of reading your posts and yes, please consider writing a book. If nothing else I'd love to here the story of how lowetide came to be and how it has changed your life.

    ReplyDelete
  99. FPB: Don't mind me; it's just that the part of my brain that finds stupid shit funny has directed me to use every free agent signing by a non-Oilers team to speculate about whether this means they're interested in Souray.

  102. I like what Wilson is doing in SJ with a 2M goalie.

Take the money you save on going cheap on a goalie and spend it on defense.

Was talking with PDO yesterday and he said the same thing.

The difference between a 2M goalie and a 5+M goalie is usually negligible and can often be attributed to quality Dmen.

Never give a goalie a long contract either, they are too unpredictable.

  103. A well-deserved payoff, LT.
You're too humble: Your well-researched posts are the best thing about this blog.
The funniest part of this blog would be the commenters who drop by to quote long-discredited fossils like Matheson, particularly his ill-founded trade rumours.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Congratulations, Lowetide. I echo the sentiment of others when saying that you're the best Oilers writer out there. Like others, I also think that what also makes this blog special is the knowledgable and respectful group of followers who post on this board. Hopefully, we'll crowd out the juvenile drivel that pollutes other message boards. Keep up the good work! And us fans here will keep up the good feedback!

  105. I've gotta say, I'm glad ST has been quiet so far.

  111. Also, never been a fan of the ON schtick but I'm also a firm believer that if you do things well you end up being surrounded who are worth talking to. So I'm certain you'll make ON a better place if you stick it out and you'll get a fair number of good conversations going over there. Congrats on the move and good luck, I'll keep reading and occasionally commenting.

  113. When you give a guy that had no job just prior to TC last year a big contract and nothing changed, you blew a tire somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  114. In my opinion, goalies are similar to baseball closers. Unless you can sign one of the top 2 or 3 guys, don't give a goalie/closer a big contract. (Remember Mark Davis and the Royals?)

  115. Lowetide,

Thank you for the years of great writing and informative posts.

Exactly. Malhotra's the kind of player you sign for $700 K in Sept (like SJ last year), not for $2.5 mil on July 1.

    ReplyDelete
  121. GMs being dumb on the first day of free agency? Some things never change.

The best Toronto can hope for from Burke is to be completely middle of the pack. Mediocre if you will.

As an oilfan I can tell you how grating that could be.

    ReplyDelete
  122. LT,

Congratulations, and make no apologies. You provide a great deal of content -- and you had no obligation to continue to do so for free.

Blogs - forum sites, whether pro, semi-pro, or non-pro all follow the same pattern. As visitors rise, you no longer have the elite and knowledgeable readership -- you end up with wider appeal but all the flotsam and jetsom too. It went that way with HF boards, and even on your site as well.

ON has a current readership -- some who wander over here on occasion, and others who can't take the conversation that happens in the comments here. This blog is also blessed with the history -- with many of your comments (myself included) who first landed here in the spring of 06.. ON won't have that history -- but you will get new and loyal readers. They deserve to see your insights, and your ability to evaluate and divine a future for this team, its prospects is frankly some of the best out there.

If I can make a suggestions (take it or leave it) leave blogger around to handle the comment streams of your current readership. I read ON articles, but never comment there.

    Cheers.

  127. Well LT - always great to get paid to do what you love... well done.

That being said, I don't often visit ON for many reasons (most of which have been well covered in the first 129 comments made).

Will I check it out more regularly now that LT is in the fold? Well... No pressure but unless you can somehow bring your fellow ON contributors up to your level (and quickly) then the answer is a definitive no.

Good news for LT and family - bad news for us daily Lowetide supporters?

    Best of luck.

I would think it was more important to find and pay players who can actually play hockey.

    ReplyDelete
  138. LT,
First of all, you deserve to be paid for the value you generate here, or anywhere else on the Al Gore. This is uncontestible, and it is long overdue.

Furthermore, unlike a lot of people who don't like to see hockey in the desert, near Cuba, or where they like both kinds of music (country and western), I am a hockey evangelist; everyone, everywhere should be a hockey fan, and join god's frozen people.

So it is with your blogging. You deserve a wider audience, so that all may receive your wit and wisdom. ON has some knuckleheads, but you and JW will raise the bar.

    Stick tap on ice....

    ReplyDelete
  139. the tampa goalie situation is an interesting study in goalie development as both were "goalies of the future" in dallas, i believe.

also, wonder how much say gaborik had in boogie man's signing? i'd say quite a bit, since it covers his whole term. i'm guessing hemsky almost laughed with joy when he say that.

the NW has become a very different division in the last couple of years.

lt, good luck over at ON. i'll miss the community here.

Souray and Kaberle must have a half decent market at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  150. LT,

By all accounts Tallinder is an acquired taste. He is sort of the definition of macho. He also apparently believes he created Tyler Meyers almost single handedly a position that could get a bit aggravating. If you read some of the press coverage out of Buffalo he sounds not unlike poor Ethan.

Wolfie, LA doesn't need another defenceman. They have Drewskie ready to step in and Hickey, Voynov, and Teubert knocking on the door. So we can probably take them off the list of possible destinations for Souray. I'd say New Jersey is climbing well up that list on the other hand.

    ReplyDelete

  161. Congrats LT and best of luck. I guess I'll have to sign up over at ON now.

Tambo 3.0 has been doing a good job of clearing out the stable, now he needs to keep his head about him and get is that checking center and depth d-man that we have been sorely lacking. Accomplish both of those and don't overpay and this really will be the Summer of Steve.

    ReplyDelete
  162. An evil doppleganger must have caught Sutter. Only explanation.

Let's hope that it means Souray is going and we can get King in return as rumored so we can stop goon hunting.

    ReplyDelete
  174. Sheessh. I can't imagine paying Jim Vandermeer (who is not very good) $2.3M and then complaining abot paying $1.8M to a guy who had 3 less points than Visnovsky last season.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Foster with the best Corsi, second best rel Cors amongst TB defenceman.

He faced comparatively easy comp. and good teammates though.

Still, this is really the best we can hope for right now. I think it frees up Tamb. to hold onto Souray if he can't get good value too.

    ReplyDelete

  179. I can't say I like having the Hamhuis in Vancouver, but with all the crazycrap going on in Cowtown, I can't feel too bad about it. I mean, the Oilers are improving by leaps and bounds, and the only bad thing to happen so far is that Van got a good top4 dman.

Overall, this has been a great day for the Oil.

  180. I know Souray is one the way but has there every been a pp tamdem with a righty and lefty with huge point shots?

Vancouver: paying big money to load up for longer post season run.

Edmonton: making good decisions to lay the foundation for a responsible rebuild

Calgary: Mushroom tea, and an old game day program guide they've mistaken for a free agent list.

If Sutter resigns Jokinen he might as well bury his head in a mountain of Coke on his desk because Sosa's men will be coming over the mansion walls shortly after.

  181. The teams in the Atlantic have just been crazy busy so far. Considering the d-men who went there, and the heavyweights, can you imagine being on the Islanders right now? God that would be a scary place to be...

  182. Vancouver needs to try and win now. Hamhuis should help. Smart move and that 4.5MM cap hit should look good 4-5 years from now.

I seriously thought someone would offer him 5.5-6MM, a la Redden and Ottawa. But I guess Sather is out of money.
