Quick Hits

A couple of quick hits this morning. The EJ tells us the Oilers goaltending situation has been moved up and this article tells us Ethan Moreau is not going to change a thing in C-Bus.

Moreau: "When I come out, I'll be one of the faster guys and one of the most physical guys. We'll put all that (stuff) to rest right away."

Also: "there are other times when you have to be not confrontational, but on any good team I've played on, there's always some form of dissension in the room."

Hopefully Derick Brassard keeps his head up and the penalty kill is all-world. Opposite George is ready, baby.

Worstcase scenario is that Khabibulin goes to jail or can't cross the border to play, right?

I've also heard rumours that he hasn't even been working out yet. If either of these scenarios are true, what do you think they will do?

Run with JDD and DD or sign/trade for a veteran?

  7. I don't think Grebs wanted to go home so much as he wasn't receiving much interest.

    Too bad, he's a decent d-man.

  8. I wanted Moreau rushed out there door as quickly as anyone else did while he was here (in his final couple of years). But I know how he can play when he's at his best (ex. Dustin Brown's yard sale). But actions do speak louder than words. We'll just have to wait and see if he can back it up. If he can, great for CBJ. Either way, we're better off.

  10. Moreau's metacognition (thinking about your own thinking) is non existent. Guy is a child. He takes no responsibility for his own actions, blames others for short coming he creates, and i think he may be a vampire. When he looks in the mirror there is clearly no reflection. The guy is a joke and the fact that he was ever the captain of this franchise is an ever bigger joke. Getting rid of him is Tambo's greatest achievement to date.

Wait. Are we still talking about Grebeshkov?

He'd be a servicable top-4 guy on this roster, but he'd be a 5-6 on any other team in the NHL. He probably priced himself out of the market. That being said, I think he returns next year after (1)blowing the doors off the KHL, and (2) realizing that transporting your blotter across Siberia isn't a smart idea.

Jebus, Ethan. It wasn't about your poor quality linemates, YOU were the bad linemate.

Easy to forget that in years past, expecially during the playoff run in '06, Moreau was often the voice of reason.

At this point, the cheese has slid completely off the cracker, though. That's clear. Dude is bonkers.

He can still, PK, but damn, what a break that they were able to unload the guy on waivers. Props to Tambellini for preparing him for a buyout by waiving him. I'm not sure that Lowe would have done the same. Is there any Moreau defender still out there? (Ethan himself excepted)

  27. I think it's fair enough to say tere must be all sorts of tension between Moreau, his teammates, management etc.

But our awesome media didn't report any of it. Good job guys.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think sports journalists have the ability to report that much about how the players interact. Or even that the media should do that. But normally, some of this stuff leaks out.

    Not in Edmonton.

I'm trying to figure out how you got that impression from such a short article. Really, I got tired of Moreau here as much as anyone and was one of the guys begging to have him waived for at least a couple of years now... but it seems like you read way too much into his short interview to get that impression. Not trying to be confrontational, just wondering how you got the idea that he was basically saying he played with bad linemates.

I'm not saying you're doing it, but it seems commonplace in Edmonton for a fan or two to extrapolate one bad thing (and not necessarily correctly) about a current or former player, and then it snowballs from there. Next thing we know we'll be talking in a couple of years about how Moreau hated his teammates and couldn't get along with anyone and such. If it's true, great, but I just take a bit of issue when fans use a bit too much conjecture and end up (possibly unintentionally) spreading bad rumors about players. I think it gives our city a bit of a bad reputation.

I don't want to open this can of worms too much, but it has happened to at least a couple of players here.

Again, not trying to be confrontational here, and I was as frustrated with Moreau's play as the next guy, but trying to understand where you get the impression that he was blaming his linemates (" It wasn't about your poor quality linemates, YOU were the bad linemate."). For the record though, I DO agree that he was the bad linemate... he was an offensive vacuum and killed the play more often than not. Just wondering where he was saying that it was other players' faults in this interview.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Rackie - I am not one to pile on and I think Oil fans have a history of picking 'goats' for little reason. However, over the past two years Moreau has been astonishingly arrogant and has frequently criticized other areas of his team (power play, defence, etc.)while never accepting any responsibility for his own play. I imagine a lot of players feel that way, but most are smart enough to keep it to themselves.

This last interview was not too bad actually, but taken as a whole, the past two years of interviews have greatly diminished my respect for the guy.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Racki- I think it stems from when he says stuff like...

"The biggest motivation comes from what I want to accomplish here," Moreau said. "The problems that we had in Edmonton ... it wasn't really my health. It was more just a situation where we had a bad team. It's hard for anybody to look good in that situation."

That's from the extended Portzline article(here). He just never seems to claim any fault of his own.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Congratulations Ribs. As someone who is married to a designer, I am always amazed at the creativity of some people.

Moreau certainly has been creative in explaning why he was such a cancer on this team. In Nerd terms, he was Senator Palpatine in 2006, but slowly progressed into the Emperor.

Good luck CBJ. I hope your scouts are out looking for the inevitable lottery pick you are going to have next year.

  39. Hey Ribs/Bookie...

Thanks for that info, that was pretty much what I was looking for. I've heard him comment on our PP and stuff like that as reasons for losses (which I don't think are so bad), but I think it's pretty uhm... cowardly and irresponsible to blame the team as a whole for his poor play. So I see now where Vic was coming from. Like I said, wasn't trying to be confrontational, just was wondering where the comments came from. And I have always been one to say that having Moreau here was a detriment to the team, so I wasn't disputing that at all or trying to defend Moreau.. just making sure that we fans weren't reading into interviews too much (which is quite commonplace). This interview Ribs quoted wasn't one I had read yet. Man...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh and the tough part too though is he's partially right. The team WAS bad, and it IS hard for anyone to stand out on such a crap team. But it's a guy like Moreau who should be standing out and setting an example, not doing stupid stuff and fading in the background. He needed to take a page from a guy like uh... I'm going to get flamed for this.... JFJ (when he was on the "energy" line, not on the top line). Just go out and hit everything and not worry at all about scoring goals.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Agreed, Racki. Trying to do too much was a problem for him.

Thanks, CrazyCoach. If anyone wants to check out the artwork I've got it up in a pdf for download here.

  42. Moreau needs to pull his head out of his ass.

He makes it sound like CBJ are a contender.

They are one or two key injuries away from being a 30 place team.

Especially with Moreau on the team now.

    Yeesh.

  43. Ethan Moreau last year:

    OTC: You're up Ethan!
TCEM: You got it coach! *climbs over the boards, points to other team* Do you know who I am? I'm The Captain Ethan Moreau!

    In his mind:
*skates down the ice with the puck, blasts such a powerful shot from the point that it goes through the goalie's chest, the net, the boards behind the net, and kills or injures several people in the stands. The other team forfeits out of fear and awe while beautiful women come from the stands and kneel at either side of him.*

    In reality:
*skates down the ice with the puck, shoots a weak shot that misses the net entirely, hooks somebody and goes to the box. The Oilers are scored against shortly thereafter.*

TCEM (in the box): This penalty kill is terrible. If only there were ten of me. We would be the best team ever. Those guys would know how to step up for sure.

  47. $1.75 million for one year is a small price to pay for a key piece in the Columbus dive for a lottery pick.

They saw how well it worked in Edmonton and just had to get in on it.

    :)

  48. All these contracts rolling in have really set the bar for the Cogliano and Gagner's contracts.

Cogliano should be in or about $2 million, and Gagner should be no more then $2.5 unless the Oilers are tacking major years on the deal.

  49. Bank Shot,

I didn't like the slam of Salo after he was traded, either, that was bad form. MacTavish was guilty of a bit of the same iirc.

  50. Ribs,

    Congratulations on the nomination.

And on Mathieu Roy ... I really rated him as an Oiler prospect. Saw him good. Damn though, that guy took some hits, he would buy an extra bit of ime by being brave. And hat was in the AHL. Niinimaa was just like that and he managed to play in the NHL for about a decade ... Roy ran out of luck early.

Yzerman is putting a lot of eggs in the "He's a terrific signing at that price if he stays healthy ... but he stays healthy" basket.

I hope it works out for him. Certainly a different way of doing things from Yzerman so far.

    ReplyDelete
  51. "And on Mathieu Roy ... I really rated him as an Oiler prospect. Saw him good."

Vic, this confuses me. He didn't do anything really well and wasn't a skater or a positionally effective defenceman. Obviously not an offensive force. What was the appeal?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Vic,

I like Tampa's roster. If Hedman takes a huge step forward, which isn't entirely out of the question for a guy of his pedigree, and if they use their cap room to buy a couple of pieces -maybe one more D and one more decent forward, and some filler forwards, and if they stay healthy...

That's more than a playoff team. That's a contender. IMO.

Top 6: Stamkos, Gagne, St. Louis, Lecavalier, Malone, X (Even with a nobody as X, that's one of the best top 6's in the league, IMO.)

    Bottom 6: Needs more work

Top 4 D: Kubina and Ohlund are a nice option at the 2 and 3 spots. If Hedman steps up, he's a great option in the top 4. They only need one more guy.

Goal: Both guys have a chance at being good.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Cogliano should be in or about $2 million...

That's about twice his qualifying offer, no? What's he done to deserve that?

    ReplyDelete
  54. That's about twice his qualifying offer, no? What's he done to deserve that?

Seasons of 45 and 38 points. I think he can make a case he's a comparable player to Brule at the very least.

If they do ink him at $1.5 or something, I'll be happy, but I'm not really expecting it.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Thanks, Vic.

I liked Roy as well. He could be a physical force at times and looked like a guy who had a lot of things going right for him developmentally.

    Then the injuries hit.

It was just bad timing at the point in his career when he would have been learning the most and would have been getting his biggest chance. He's a reclamation project these days. Oh well.

  57. Ribs, yeah Roy looked very good, better than any of the D prospects save Gilbert since the lockout, but injuries derailed him. Looked like a strong defensive defenceman prospect.

From what I've read of Swedish fan comments, Hedman looked very much like he did his first go with MODO when he was elevated to the top men's league in Sweden. Took him a while to get used to it and adjust. His 2nd season he started breaking the doors down, and by the time he was drafted he was starting to tear the doors off the hinges. There's every chance he takes a huge step forward in the next season or two.

Adam Larsson is smaller at 6'2" but apparently is much further ahead of Hedman at that age. Smarter, more skilled, and more physical. Consensus is that Larsson is better, but Hedman has more potential based on size. But who knows with prospects =).
