Shapes of Things to Come

One thing all Oilers fans have in common: eventually seeing their favorite players in another uniform. From Blair MacDonald through Coffey through 99 through Messier and on to Tikkanen, Kurri and later Weight, Smyth...and soon?

I don't think there's very many of the current bunch that the Oilers would refuse to lose. Dustin Penner might be the only guy on the completely restricted list, altough one hopes players like Hemsky, Gagner, Gilbert and Whitney are close to unavailable (the Oilers need their good players).

On a parallel track, the kids who could be close (Hall/Seguin, MPS, Eberle, McGuinn, Clark & Hillman) have to be factored in, plus (unless I'm wrong) there is probably a list of value free agents for Edmonton and Okla City in the mix.

We'll know in the next four weeks. Here are some questions to ponder.

  1. Is Pat Quinn the man to coach a period of transition?
  2. What of Nikolai Khabibulin and his future?
  3. Will they get anything for Sheldon Souray?
  4. Hall-Seguin? Seguin-Hall?
  5. JDD-DD? DD-JDD?
  6. How many rugged wingers can they grab?
  7. Which of the many minute men are heading out of town?
  8. The team photo requires more blue. Right?
  9. Can they acquire enough quality to pair Gagner with Penner for an entire year?
  10. Are the Oilers going to acquire a 2nd pick in the first round in order to acquire someone like Dylan McIlrath?

  1. Let me be the first to say that I think Horcoff is going to have a bounceback year provided he stays healthy and has reasonable linemates.

    ;P

    Now lets see here.

    1. No. Maybe if it were the transition period when they legalized the forward pass.

    2. 3 to 5 years and a voided contract hopefully

    3. Damaged goods and a big contract right back at ya.

    4. Fowler. ;)

    5. DD - he wasn't sent to Europe for nothing.

    6. No need, they have Jacques! He's worth two or three.

    7. Nilsson, POS, plus one more.

    8. Right.

    9. Possible.

    10. Yes.

    You can thank me later.

  2. I luv playing 20 questions:

Is Pat Quinn the man to coach a period of transition?
If he's good enough for Barbara Ann Scott, he's good enough for me.

What of Nikolai Khabibulin and his future?
Would Florida be up for saving $2.5 Big Ones next season?

Will they get anything for Sheldon Souray?
I like the Kent Huskins idea.

    Hall-Seguin? Seguin-Hall?
    Seguin

    JDD-DD? DD-JDD?
Trade DD, Sign JDD and send him to Oklahoma to play for th Blazers [Gerry Cheevers for a new generation]

How many rugged wingers can they grab?
    One? OK, two.

Which of the many minute men are heading out of town?
Gagner for Spezza, Brule for Stafford, Cogliano for Wheeler, Rowbear to Timra, Patio to the Blazers.

The team photo requires more blue. Right?
    Shaone Morrissonn, Kurtis Foster.

Can they acquire enough quality to pair Gagner with Penner for an entire year?
Well, they couldn't last summer. Let's see what Clarity brings.

Are the Oilers going to acquire a 2nd pick in the first round in order to acquire someone like Dylan McIlrath?
Yes, but not McIlrath. Just take Petrovic with 31. Ross with 48.

  4. 1. Pat Quinn will be here for the length of his contract.

    2. Khabibulin will be at training camp and ready to go.

    3. They will get another salary dump for him.

    4. Hall

    5. One will be the backup, the other will clear waivers and be the starter in OKC.

    6. One potentially for the top 6, maybe one that can be a 14th forward/7th Dman.

    7. Nilsson, O'sullivan and Cogliano.

    8. Right

    9. Does Eberle or Brule count as quality?

    10. Yes. Cogliano is the bait.

  5. 1. He's proved he can coach young players before, at the World Juniors, I think a better question is whether Quinn-Renney is really working. Are they on the same page?

    2. Khabibulin is an Oiler until he plays his way onto another team via trade with excellent netminding, or plays his way into the minors with poor play. An average performance will likely keep him an Oiler for at least two more years.

    3. Something like a player who is really worth $2 million but actually paid $3 million, and can play a regular shift as your #5 D-man? Sure. Maybe a very good prospect if you take back a salary and a team needs help on their blue-line. Souray for Ryder + Colbourne, maybe? Not sure if Boston really needs help on the blue, per se, though.

    4. Tambellini will have his much desired consensus, and it will go the way of Hall, but he'll get something out of Boston to leave Hall available at #2 (so the Oilers can maintain the prestige of #1), and they'll take Seguin. And possibly end up with #15 for it.

    5. I think the organization thinks they've already have JDD figured out, and will invest in the mystique of a younger goalie who has a higher pedigree and has played fewer games.

    6. Depends if they're willing to off-load Cogliano straight up for one. But they really need to draft players like those in the third and fourth round, more. Surely guys who can play a physical game on your fourth line are still available then?

    7. Nilsson and O'Sullivan. They'll be dealt for nothing if anybody wants to take a chance on them. I think O'Sullivan might get picked up somewhere. Cogliano will likely be dealt as well, making room for either Eberle or Omark.

    8. Whitney and Gilbert can probably be your number one pairing, and Smid is good enough to be your #4, but they could still use a powerplay specialist on their bottom pairing, a shut-down #3, and Johnson would likely be a nice add as #6. I doubt they get Hamhuis unless the contract is way better, and that makes me uncomfortable if you have to add a fourth or fifth year just to get him. How well five year deals have worked out for high profile, offensive-minded defencemen here? Then again, is there a legitimate #3 that the Oilers can afford?

Oh, and they need to leave the #7 spot open for one of Peckham or Petry to grab.

    9. If they draft Hall, that's a quality LW that Gagner is going to have regardless of which of the top two lines he plays on. Would running Hall-Horcoff-Hemsky and Penner-Gagner-Brule work? Is Paajarvi going to score right away, or will he need time to adjust? He's certainly in the running for one of the top two LW spots as well.

    10. I think a 1st round pick is the centerpiece of any Boston package that ensures they get Hall. Tambellini may be fishing for more, but I think that'd be the foundation. They might try to package that #15 along with their #31 and maybe a player to move up to grab one of the high profile defencemen (what if Fowler is available at #6, for instance?).

  6. 1.
No, not at all, he seemed helpless last year.
    2. Can bounce back, a good goalie when healthy
    3. Sure, damaged goods, but it's still shiny
    4. Seguin (Not gonna put it up again)
    5. DD (He's younger)
    6. 1-2, i'd like Ladd
    7. O'sullivan, Cogliano, Comrie
    8. Yellow with purple diamonds
    9. You can always do that, it's just a matter of how you do it
    10. Going to be honest, i don't like guys who can't play a tiny bit of offense. Maybe if it fits with trading the minute mans or Souray. I bet they'l call Kabanov's name 2nd round if he's still up there.

  7. 11. We talked about the Ivy League earlier. Is there a bettter team name than the Brown Bears?

    12. MC79 is bucking the wisdom of the Oreosphere by suggesting Spezza would be a good pick up for the Oilers. Will he [Mudcrutch] be right again?

    13. Has anyone noticed Spezza has a NTC?

    14. Or does it not kick in until July 1?

15 If the Oilers ditch JFJ, how many other teams will give him a kick at the NHL cat? Two? Three?

  8. 16. In the past Jason Gregor has entertained us with his thoughts on the Salary Cap and The Waiver Wire. With which topic will he enthrall us this summer?

    17. Well known maroon Joel Quenville outcoached Todd McLellan in the Western Final. Was his secret to leave the Bus with the best 20 guys?

    18. Has Sam Gagner done enough to become scapegoat if Shawn Horcoff is traded?

    19. After Montreal lucked out against the Capitals, several media commenter-types declared that Ovechkin is a putz. These same commenter remained quite mum when Sydney "da Binger" Crosby suffered the same fate against those lucky Habs. What's up with that?

    ReplyDelete
  9. 1. No. With rumours of he and Renney not being on the same page and some players complaining about OTC, Renney needs to be the man going forward.

The question is does Milquetoast have the balls to fire him?

I can see a Tambellini presser where he apologizes to OTC for selling him a bill of goods in terms of where the team was and "letting him out of his contract"

    2) He is here for at least 2 more years.

    3) Yes, but what is coming back will have its own unique set of problems, but probably not as many as what is going away.

    4) Seguin

    5) DD and its not close

    6) They should get 2, they will get 1

    7) POS, Comrie, Cogs, Nillson

    8) At least 3 more, if Peckham can't clear waivers maybe 2, but I still like 3.

    9) Really depends on who is head coach on whether or not those two play together. I think Renney is more MacT like where its Power v. Power. Hopensky!

    10) Yes. Watch for them to parlay what the wrestle out of Boston to pass on Hall, and add a body from the roster last year and their 31st to get McIlrath.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Your questions

    1) Is Pat Quinn the man to coach a period of transition? Of course not, seriously that is NOT even a serious question is it?

2)What of Nikolai Khabibulin and his future? He is "Tambi's" signing ......we are stuck with him

    3) Will they get anything for Sheldon Souray? if we get nothing of value stick him in OKC

    4) Hall-Seguin? Seguin-Hall?
    Seguin

    5)JDD-DD? DD-JDD?
Again ....seriously they are both bad, if we need 35 games from our backup.....neither of these guys are the answer to whatever the Q is

    6) How many rugged wingers can they grab? never enough....Boyd Gordon

    7) Which of the many minute men are heading out of town? be very careful and trade minutemen for 2012

    8) Can they acquire enough quality to pair Gagner with Penner for an entire year? why not trade Penner at the peak value or is the objective to try for 8th through 12th in the West for the next 5 years?

    9) Are the Oilers going to acquire a 2nd pick in the first round in order to acquire someone like Dylan McIlrath? It is very very hard to do

It is a lot easier to trade for a solid defensive 2nd center than it is to find a Spezza like talent

Course Horcoff is a habitual 65 point tough minutes center if you ignore the fact that he has scored 53+ points ONCE in his career

    ReplyDelete
  11. Ethan Moreau will be the Oilers Captin come this October (and going forwards)

Was that one of the questions?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Course Horcoff is a habitual 65 point tough minutes center if you ignore the fact that he has scored 53+ points ONCE in his career

Seems like the convenient thing to do is to ignore the fact that he scored 50 points in 53 games prior to the shoulder injury in January 2008, or that his points-per-game rate of production from 2005-06 through 2008-09 translates into 0.78 points per game (or, in other terms, 64 points over an 82 game season).

And this is without considering the undeniable fact that the player in question did this while facing the absolute best opposition possible night after night. But hey, let's not consider things such as "context", right?

  14. Hbomb: He was shooting for 18,3%, so let's call it luck.

  15. If Ethan Moreau is on the team at camp I'll eat my hat.

I fear they wiLl JFJ another contract though.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Endras had a .905 save % last two DEL seasons.

KHLers Glass & Garnett look better than that

    ReplyDelete
  17. If we get the Ethan Moreau that played at the end of the season with Horcoff and Pisani I'm not opposed to seeing him back. That's if we can put him in the same situation next season.

He obviously can't play with the youngins. With Hall, Penner and MPS on the left side you can play him in that scenario while having one of the two youngins eating up 4th liners from other teams.

Unless of course you move MPS over to the right side and let Gagner have both on his wings. That should be interesting. Probably a ton of goals both ways if that happens.

Next Souray is dealt to Dallas for Ribeiro so Horcoff and play those tough checking minutes and not have to worry about offense.

The only real problem after that is finding enough d-men who can play.

JDD and DD... I don't think it really matters at this point. There are so many affordable options on the market this summer that I really doubt either gets plucked off waivers. I would like to see more of DD. Like FPB said JDD has some incredible tools but I'm not sure he has enough mental fortitude to play at a high level consistently. DD might be the next Alex Auld but there is also a chance he could be much better.

DD shows the mental stuff you need in a goalie. He looks unflappable and mentally solid. He has very good technique. Still plays a little too deep for my liking. But I think he has what it takes to be a better goalie than JDD even if he doesn't have the same physical gifts that Deslauriers has.

It's going to be an interesting summer. I hope there's less talk and more action than last summer.

  18. "Endras had a .905 save % last two DEL seasons."

    .929 sv% in playoffs in 2008/2009

    .937 sv% in playoffs in 2009/2010

    .961 sv% in WC

    MVP of WC.

I'll take him over anything we have.

Fortunately for you Tambellini doesn't believe in free assets.

  19. 1. Quinn deserves an opportunity to redeem himself. As long as he wants to continue coaching, he should get another shot. If it doesn't work out, then look to make a coaching move after the season.

    2. Stays in Edmonton, recovers from surgery and plays 40-45 games winning 25 of them, but still loses time to some sort of injury.

    3. Spare parts and/or mid round picks.

    4. Hall, unless Boston makes an offer Tambi can't refuse.

    5. DD. JDD gets traded for a 3rd round pick, or maybe another team's minor league goalie.

    6. There's plenty of rugged wingers available via free agency this year, just depends on who they want to target. Should be able to get 2 or 3, unless Tambi wants to go with 3 scoring lines and one shutdown line next season.

    7. Nilsson & Comrie. Patty O gets one more chance and gets playing time with some of the rookies.

    8. Right.

    9. Yep. They'll at least get the quality PK 3rd/4th line center they've been desperately needing which will free up Horcoff and give the team a strong top 6. I really don't expect Horcoff to struggle like he did this past season, if he does... it's going to be a long year.

    10. Possible but doubtful unless they package some combination of Cogliano, Brule, 2nd round picks and/or JDD/DD, or trade down from the #1 pick.

    ReplyDelete
  20. If it was a 'Strasburg' draft no one would be saying either guy would be fine. But nothing wrong with a good shot at a legit top liner.

  22. 1. Is Pat Quinn the man to coach a period of transition?

Probably not. But We're stuck with him for at least one more year.

    2. What of Nikolai Khabibulin and his future?

Hasek redux, and we're not Detroit. He might have one healthy season in him. Hopefully they wise up before they're running backups for the next 3 seasons. Olivier Roy is our saviour but he's a ways off.

    3. Will they get anything for Sheldon Souray?

Nope. I wouldn't be surprised to see him stay.

    4. Hall-Seguin? Seguin-Hall?

    They'll pick Hall.

    5. JDD-DD? DD-JDD?

    Dubnyk is the better goalie.

    6. How many rugged wingers can they grab?

    One.

    7. Which of the many minute men are heading out of town?

    Nilsson, Comrie.

    8. The team photo requires more blue. Right?

They really should make this a priority if they are planning to be competitive. I'll say they pick up Lilja and it's 50/50 if he stays healthy next season.

    9. Can they acquire enough quality to pair Gagner with Penner for an entire year?

    Nope.

    10. Are the Oilers going to acquire a 2nd pick in the first round in order to acquire someone like Dylan McIlrath?

They'll try but unless they give away Cogliano, no dice.

    Fun!

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1. Yes, surprisingly.

    2. He'll come back and play alright. He was settling in before he got hurt and I could see him extending that.

    3. Yes, and an overpay at that.

    4. Hall-Seguin

    5. JDD-DD. Always has been, always will be.

    6. They should grab one really good one. They'll probably grab two really bad ones.

    7. Nilsson, Cogliano. Probably O'Sullivan even though I truly hope not.

    8. Yes. They won't go after who they should though. And we'll probably be stuck with Strudwick again...UGH!

    9. I'm not sure they'll need to acquire it. I'd love it if they did but I don't think they're aggressive enough. Their prospects might just walk right in and claim the spots though.

    10. I hope not. They should pick a kid who has enough high end potential to cause a serious debate in 2 years as to whether he's better than whoever went at #1. Swing like Bryce Harper.

    ReplyDelete
  24. PDO - I wish I threw a 90 MPH changeup...

They'll be fun to watch with Harper and Strasburg. A bit of a side show because I highly doubt they'll dedicate the resources to support their stars, but an amusing one nonetheless!

  25. 1. He is perfect. About the time we get good and need a real coach he'll be ready to move on down the road.
    2. He'll play out his contract here. By the end of it he'll be an overpaid #2.
    3. Yes. Mostly likely Jan Hedja and cap room.
    4. Seguin. Because Boston wants Hall badly enough to give up something good.
    5. Wrong question. We should enter camp with four potential back ups. Add players like Nathan Lawson to your question. All will be at the high end of the pay scale for AHL help. Two go to Oklahoma. Best two stay here until we know Khabibulin can play.
    6. There are several who would look good here I just can't see them signing more than one if they re-sign Ryan Stone. Otherwise two.
    7. O'Sullivan. Nilsson.
    8. Absolutely at least one more NHL level 5-6 (assuming Hedja) and at least one more AHL capable veteran with upside. I am holding out for Brendan Bell.
    9. I think they already have enough talent for that. If they pick Hall certainly they do. I am thinking MPS/Horcoff/Hemsky Penner/Gagner/Brule if no Hall.
    10. Yes. I think Boston is actually going to give it to them.

  26. HBomb

Want a little context: Horcoff has scored more than 53 points ONCE. I am too lazy to calculate his points per season but I bet it is around 45 per season or less. On two other occasions he had 2 very good starts but, alas, he never got to 55 games. So to avoid that fact you suggest lets PROJECT his performance if we do that he would be a 75 point player if he played 80 games.

If my Grandma had balls she would be my grandpa. She does not and is not! Thank God

But he isn't a 60 point scorer .....he is a 45 to 50 point scorer. That is quite simply a fact. Does he play tough competition? yes. Is he a good defender...yup. Does he work his ass off...yup

But he has scored more than 53 points on one occasion

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think its funny how scoring 53 is way more impressive than 52..

At least referencing the 100, or 82 point plateaus the line isnt moved around to make the point as 'dramatic' as possible

  31. The thing to remember about Horcoff is that he had his 70 point season in a freak year when the Brian Giontas's of the NHL were putting up 90 points.
Any career year from 05-06 should be taken with a grain of salt.

His other big season was abbreviated, and helped greatly by an unsustainable shooting percentage.

If you view those seasons as outliers which they certainly appear to be, then you're looking at a 50 point center making too much money in a league where counting numbers determine payscale.

He's still useful, so having Horcoff as one of a couple overpays won't be the end of the world.

What is more worrying to me is if Hemsky or Gagner have breakout seasons, then their agents will have a field day using Horcoff's salary as a comp. I hope they do break out, but the Oilers could pay dearly because they made Shawn Horcoff the highest paid forward on the team.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Voxwah, that's the big question. From what I saw of the WHC he looked very good at shielding the puck in the offensive zone, and did one or two things a game to draw attention to himself around the net. He also dished at least 2 very sweet saucer passes right onto the tape of the late man into the zone for a one timer after drawing a defender to himself in close.

That's not to say he can do the same thing on the smaller ice and more physical NHL, but here's hoping he adjusts well and quickly.

On the downside I didn't notice him for the vast majority of games, and never in any zone besides the offensive one; I guess that could be because of the way the coach utilized him but it doesn't bode well.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Off topic, but I have an office World Cup soccer pool starting up. I haven't followed football since I was a kid and I doubt Klinnsman, Maradonna, Caca, etc. are still around.

You pick players by round, so which players do the more worldly denizens of the Lowetide realm recommend for round one?

  34. Who the heck are McGuinn, Clark & Hillman?

    ReplyDelete
  35. They were all members of the Byrds (McGuinn was the leader, played that 12-string on Turn, Turn, Turn and Mr. Tambourine Man, among others) and the three of them released a really nice album as McGuinn, Clark and Hillman in the mid-70's.

Nothing ground breaking, but really good songs. Roger McGuinn is pretty much forgotten now but he had some talent.

Normally I'm not the one to jump to Horcoff's defense, but in this case I will, at least to an extent.

While I agree that point totals from the 05/06 season were elevated in comparision to years before and since, it was all to do with artificially elevated PP scoring, something that Horcoff didn't really gorge himself on that year.

In 05/06, there were 24 players with 40+ PP points. In 09/10, there were 2.

In 05/06, there were 16 players with 50+ EV points. In 09/10, there were 23.

Horcoff was the runaway team leader in EV points that year, while only finishing 5th on the team in PP points, while guys like Hemsky and Pronger feasted on the elevated PP opportunities.

While I think that people refer to his abbreviated 07/08 season far too much as something that future performance can be projected from (c'mon, his shooting % that year was around 5% above his norm, to expect that to happen again isn't impossible, but I'd consider it a losing bet), he should be given credit for his 05/06 performance, IMO it was an honest 70+ point season.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I saw McGuinn at the Folk Festival several years ago.

And, of course, Clarke & Hillman played for the hated Flyers.

  38. 1) I think OTC gives it one last chance.
    2) I doubt we get anything better than Rosival or something of the like for Souray
3)Bulin will be back, and hoepfully we will have some sort of suitable back-up plan
    4) Leaning towards Hall, but I'll take either or.
5)DD is the clear winner, especially when you factor in late season performance and age.
6)Hopefully we can find a player in that mold that can contribute.
    7) Nilsson, POS, and (oh, please god!) Moreau
skipping to 9)If we draft Hall there is some quality right there, I think MPS would help too
    10) the best use of the Oilers assets, after Hall-Seguin is Alex Petrovic and trying to nudge the 32nd overall from ( Boston? or is it TO this year?) and snag Kabanov, provided he is still on the board.

  39. Oddly enough, imo, Penner best serves this team as quality trade bait. Especially if Byfuglien (sp?) has another impact game this play-offs.

As for the battery of questions:

Is Pat Quinn the man to coach a period of transition?

Don't care for this next year.

What of Nikolai Khabibulin and his future?

Anything and everything that can be done to dump him. Including a buy-out.

Will they get anything for Sheldon Souray?

Sure. The quality of what they get will be directly attributable to what they take back.

    Hall-Seguin? Seguin-Hall?

Hall, unless Boston coughs it up in which case I take Seguin.

    JDD-DD? DD-JDD?

    Given that I am a rebuild man - JDD-DD.

How many rugged wingers can they grab?

Two. One will even be able to play a bit. Three if they take Hall.

Which of the many minute men are heading out of town?

    Pick two.

The team photo requires more blue. Right?

Yes. But you won't find it.

Can they acquire enough quality to pair Gagner with Penner for an entire year?

    Yes. Will they? No.

Are the Oilers going to acquire a 2nd pick in the first round in order to acquire someone like Dylan McIlrath?

    I hope so.

  40. Hard to see how Horcoff will be able to maintain his offensive production given the prospects coming along who will be getting PP minutes.

Hall/Seguin, Pajaarvi, and Eberle are all going to get some PP minutes, and Brule is going to get more than he did last year. Those minutes will come at the expense of Horcoff, who has been a fixture on the first unit in recent years, but was pretty ineffective last year.

  41. How hard is it for people to understand a 70 point season requires you to score 70 pts

You don't get to use stats to project what he could have scored.....we know what he did score

  42. Guess I can stop searching Hockey Futures for McGuinn, Clark and Hillman.

I just flipped a coin and it landed heads.

I guess the tails side of a coin is a myth. And there is no such thing as a range of reasonable expectations.

  44. 1. Is Pat Quinn the man to coach a period of transition?

No...Renney is the man...but there are worse things than OTC's pressers.

    2. What of Nikolai Khabibulin and his future?

Options are play him or play him. I will take planting a pound of yayo in the back of his Ferrari for $600 Alex?

    3. Will they get anything for Sheldon Souray?

Sure. His value is debatable though.

    4. Hall-Seguin? Seguin-Hall?

    Begging for Seguin.

    5. JDD-DD? DD-JDD?

    DD...and it isn't close.

    6. How many rugged wingers can they grab?

One. People always overestimate roster turnover.

    7. Which of the many minute men are heading out of town?

Nilsson is a good bet. Comrie is 50/50, and the rest are less than that for before TC.

    8. The team photo requires more blue. Right?

Depends on the long term plan. Do you want 9th or another lotto pick. Status quo for the rebuild.

    9. Can they acquire enough quality to pair Gagner with Penner for an entire year?

MPS, maybe Hall on LW....with Horc, leaving Gags and Penner.

    10. Are the Oilers going to acquire a 2nd pick in the first round in order to acquire someone like Dylan McIlrath?

I would rather take Petrovic with 31st but it wouldn't disappoint me depending on what they gave up.

  45. Everyday we Don't hear that Quinn's coming back is, IMO, a day that brings us closer to the possibility that he isn't.

I still say that MacT returns even that that's probably off the mark given that 27 didn't play for Canada's Worlds team and the only reason I can think of is that him and MacT can't mend fences.

    Oh and welcome back Slipper.

  46. 1. Is Pat Quinn the man to coach a period of transition?

No. Renney and Quinn should switch jobs. Renney as Head Coach, Quinn as assistant and/or adviser.

    2. What of Nikolai Khabibulin and his future?

Gives us one decent year (with some downtime) then the Oilers beg a KHL team to take him on permanent loan.

    3. Will they get anything for Sheldon Souray?

Absolutely. I like some of the Boston rumors going around. Vastly better than the dumb Roszival one.

    4. Hall-Seguin? Seguin-Hall?

No doubt, Seguin. Hall's the sexy pick now, Seguin will be the better NHL player 3 years from now. Let't hope they can get some assets from Boston in the deal.

    5. JDD-DD? DD-JDD?

Dubnyk has show a lot, and he had substantial minutes a year before he really should have. Ditch JDD.

    6. How many rugged wingers can they grab?

One or two, but in deals, no signings. May need to sweeten the pot with Nash or another mid-level prospect.

    7. Which of the many minute men are heading out of town?

All of them Nilsson, Comrie, O'Sullivan, Cogliano.

    8. The team photo requires more blue. Right?

Absolutely. They sorely need a 2nd line stay-at-home guy who can give then 10-12 minutes of solid positional/good checking play and can make the good breakout pass. But I've been saying that for 3 years now.

    9. Can they acquire enough quality to pair Gagner with Penner for an entire year?

Possible. Depends who we get in a Souray deal and/or if MPS can make the team this fall.

    10. Are the Oilers going to acquire a 2nd pick in the first round in order to acquire someone like Dylan McIlrath?

Doubtful, but an extra 2nd round pick could go a long way.
