Oilers at 61: Ryan Martindale
ISS: 61
Bob McKenzie: 58
Ottawa 67’s head coach Chris Byrne: “Ryan Martindale is a tall, skilled, swift-skating center who can play in all situations. Ryan has worked hard on playing a 2 way game this season. He has a nose for the net and can beat defenders one-on-one with his size, speed or skill.”
Martindale has first round skill coupled with late round competitiveness. At times he can dominate a game, and at other times, you will struggle to realize he’s on the ice. Martindale could be a steal if he can find some passion and drive in his game and utilize his size, but if he doesn’t he’ll have a rough adjustment to professional hockey.
Scouts love his size and skill. His work ethic and consistency? Not so much.-Hockey News.
Red line report Ranked 100
Big pivot has three OHL campaigns under his belt and still shows the same mind-numbing lack of effort and passion we saw in him playing minor hockey, when he was being touted as a can't miss prospect. Effective with the puck in open ice - uses long quick reach, quick hands, and slick puckhandling skills. Lackign strength and drive in his legs, and not quick off the mark. Does have a nice shot release and can be effective when he shows some interest. But is easily pushed off the puck by smaller d-men. Soft and doesn't compete. Loses all the little battles and in not wild about contact.
Projection: Frustrating project on the AHL/NHL shuttle
Style compares to: Ryan O'Marra
Steve Tambellini: "He's a 6.03 center, some games he would dominate and some games he wouldn't. He's just growing into his body, he's a tall young guy. That presence in the middle with that kind of size is what we're looking for."
Stu MacGregor: "He was their top line centerman, he played with Toffoli. He was a very solid, big guy. He has to improve his game in some areas, but he has size and skill. His overall commitment needs to be there every night. He's a big kid that has a lot of talent."
anything? anyone?
ReplyDeleteRyan Martindale is a player that may or may not be in the NHL in the distant future.
ReplyDeleteWTF OILERS.
ReplyDeletetypo or annoyance?
ReplyDelete"Oilers at 91"
He's umm...better than Abney?
ReplyDeleteMB had to have seen something in this kid. We really could have used a defenseman there, sounds like the Hawks got the guy we wanted.
ReplyDeleteIf I was going to draft a "project forward", would have taken the top 10 talented Russian Kabanov over Martindale. Just sayin.
ReplyDeleteHe's got two fights listed on youtube. He gets rag-doll'd in both of them.
ReplyDeleteAnyone for a Coke?

ReplyDeleteAlso on Martindale, he's got another two youtube clips of goals.
ReplyDeleteCombined distance to the net for the three goals listed? about 6 feet.
He's going to pack his ass out front, and won't be moved.
Weal goes to the Kings
ReplyDeleteUgh,
ReplyDeleteOilers drafting falls apart in round 3 again
Isn't one of the key ingredients of a coke machine being taken well above where they are projected to go?
ReplyDeleteMcKenzie had Martindale at 58
Date of Birth: October 27th, 1991
ReplyDeleteHeight: 6.03
Weight: 182lbs.
Shoots: L
Season Statistics: Regular Season | 61GP 19G 41A 60P 37PIM - Playoffs | 12GP 4G 5A 9P 6PIM
ISS had him at 40, The Hockey News claims he's a kid who can be dominant at times, but has serious work ethic/consistency issues
ReplyDeleteYeah, not so bad I guess.
ReplyDeleteJust have PTSD from Abney pick

Yes it's just typical oilfans freaking out about players and selections they don't know a whole lot about.
CSS had him #27 NA skater.
ReplyDeleteLT - you have Martindale #91 not #61
ReplyDeleteYes it's just typical oilfans freaking out about players and selections they don't know a whole lot about.
ReplyDeleteBig, slow, uninterested.
True definition of a coke machine.
He's slightly more offensively gifted when compared to our recent coke-machine selections, but this is Brad Winchester re-incarnate.
Thanks Deano.
ReplyDeleteI'm liking the draft a lot, but would really like another defender. Plus, they gave up on Riley Nash and they shouldn't have; that is on management not the scouting department.
Galiev still on the board.
ReplyDeleteMattN:
ReplyDeleteSo is Pulkkinen. Guy's got first-round offensive talent.
Why wouldn't we try Kabanov?
ReplyDeleteSondre Olden was a good pick. Leafs are having a good day.
ReplyDeleteAnon: Oilers don't draft Russians. They never really have.
ReplyDeletePulkkinen or Galiev. Hold, Hold.
ReplyDelete@ Lowetide: I wouldn't necesarilly say it is just on management. Nash was one of Pendergrasts boys, and a second round projection in his draft year. Could be KP fell in love with him and MBS didn't, and the difference in how they evaluate him coupled with the contract issues results in him getting traded for a guy MBS likes.
ReplyDeleteWhen considering the depth we have in the forward ranks and the lack of it on the back end, I'll take MBS' judgment over Kevins blunders.
It sucks that we traded so much to get him initially, but this is a new regime and their asset management shouldn't be held side by side anymore.

I am at work hitting F5 like a madman, calling out an 18 year old Russian boys name.
ReplyDeleteMan I love hockey.
By the way, I am working on filling in the blanks for previous selections. That defenseman looks good but inconsistent.
ReplyDeleteMatt McKenzie went to Buffalo.
ReplyDeleteMcKenzie off the board.
ReplyDeleteIf Galiev makes it to the 4th round and MB takes a coke machine, I will yell at one of my co workers randomly.
I like this pick. Really nice passing ability and solid puck skills. He uses his size to protect the puck well in the offensive zone. He's not a goal scorer though as his finishing seems somewhat suspect despite his ability to get position. There's enough offensive upside here, he wasn't drafted just to be a banger. I liked him a lot more than Hamilton in the games I saw them both play this year.
ReplyDeleteFuck you Washington.
ReplyDeleteThere goes Galiev.
Martindale looks good
ReplyDeleteI had Shipley on my list, the other side of the same coin.
I see Leach went to Calgary at 73,
I was pretty sure the Oilers would have to take the poor man's McIlrath at 61 if they wanted him.
Re: Drafting more Dmen...
ReplyDeleteIf Hall is the focus of the new cluster, and if Dmen take longer to develop, then wouldn't it stand to reason that a smart team would draft players that would make more immediate impacts (forwards), and try to target more veteran Dmen through trades or FA?
Makes sense to me.
It's sick that Washington gets a free pass to sit there and take Russians all day.
ReplyDeleteCan't we hire a couple genius Russian hockey guys to funnel that talent this way?
Take a crack at Spooner at 91?
ReplyDeletespooner is gone.
ReplyDeletewhoops, totally missed that spooner went in the second.
ReplyDeleteCarolina takes Levi at #85
ReplyDelete"Levi is a physically devastating defenceman"
Take a crack at Spooner at 91?
ReplyDeleteHe went 45th to Boston
Is Spooner still there? Crazy.
ReplyDelete@Phil - Also remember that in pure asset management, you have 12 forwards and 6 D. Loading up on forwards makes more sense, we could definitely use a blue chipper or 2 on D though.
ReplyDeleteTAKE THE FINN
ReplyDeleteI have no idea who that 4th rounder is.
ReplyDeleteWhy would anyone have a problem with a ppg in the OHL 6'3" Center at 61?
ReplyDeleteLooks to be good value.
Jeremie Blain??
ReplyDelete6'2" 192lbs defenseman from Acadie of the QMJHL. Stats look to be a two-way guy with some crust.
ReplyDeleteCrust is all well and good, but hardly delicious without any jam.
ReplyDelete@ James L - Clever, I like that :)

Okay, couldn't the Oilers have used this pick on Kabanov?
ReplyDeleteI'm really hoping that Kabanov and Pulkkinen are the next picks, and that both are still available when the Oil next step up.
It's not like Kabanov is has any options on where to play. Also Galiev and Weal getting snapped up rankles.
Link two - Blain

Sounds like a good kid.
ReplyDeleteNM, just saw where Kabanov went, to the NYI.
ReplyDeleteWoodguy, Kabanov is also a 6'3" centre with over a PPG in junior...kinda. Bitterly disappointed that the Oil didn't snag him with 61OV.

ReplyDeleteWho might be a basket case and a flight risk back to mother Russia.
I like Kabanov's talent too, but I can't remember a pick who had a reputation for "crazy" that actually panned out.
Throw the Russian/KHL thing and you might as well throw that pick in the garbage.
Super high risk. With still some quality prospects left, too risky for me and I used to partially make my living from poker.
maybe they got Martindale to replace Nash?
ReplyDeleteI really don't get all the disapointment in this pick. I had him as one of the guys I would've been happy with at 31. I've watched him play quite a bit this year, and I've liked what I've seen every time.
ReplyDeleteHe's a good skater with a great release and good size. I definitely wouldn't put him in the "coke machine" category any more than I would a guy like Corey Perry because he's clearly more than that.
He's got lots of development ahead of him, but I like this pick a lot.
