Things usually go a little crazy by Wednesday of draft week, so consider this a 'last Chance Texaco' reminder about some of the really important links to pay attention to leading up to Friday.
- speeds is well along on his first round list and its interesting to see he likes Granlund and Gormley as much as I do, and his thoughts on Connolly are also worth reading.
- YK Oil does brilliant work with the draft and has already been active this week. I find myself visiting his archives for each season's draft often during the season. Very interesting blog.
- Flaming and Millard don't get near the respect they've earned but the truth is their reviews of last season's draft were the most worthwhile words devoted to the Oilers over those days in 2009.
- Redline Report does their "draft chat with Kyle" over at USA today this morning at 11. If you can't make it, they archive it right away. Very insightful stuff available there.
- Also today the HHOF announces their latest names. I hold out little hope for Mark Howe, a bit more for Eric Lindros and would be astounded if Doug Gilmour doesn't make the grade (he's a former Leaf, for crying out loud). Howe should have been in long ago, and Lindros should be in too.
It's a great week to be an Oiler fan, and those have been few and far between since 2006 summer. Enjoy.
Whoa. I just read Dean and Guy's 1st overall prediction. All along i have thought that I'm OK with whomever we pick. Now i find myself nervous we might take Seguin without any compensation from Boston.

ReplyDeleteI think the NHL Hall of Fame has already let in too many "very good" hockey players. I believe the Hall should be reserved for the top players of each generation. If that is the main requirement (and not simply the accumulation of stats due to longevity) then Lindros deserves to get in. And guys like Glenn Anderson and Clark Gillies are not worthy.

ReplyDeleteIf the HHOF were like Cooperstown then nobody would get in this year and the guys that everyone are referring to - Neely, Gillies, Anderson and so on would not be in.

After Jack Lemaire Anderson is the best of the lot, back in the day he was on a par with all of the non Gretzky guys on that Oilers' team.
Guys like Gillies, Lindros, Bure - I think I could take them or leave them even in the Hall as presently constituted.
And Dug have to disagree on Lindros. He had his shot at glory a few times and never got it done. Had a Finals appearance with the Flyers, was a featured player in '96 and '98 and nothing there either. Only time he ever won was as a supporting player in 91 and 02
I was never a big fan of that whole Lindros act.
You know what sucks. Its that after the draft we have a couple of more months of Tyler vs Taylor debate with no new news on the horizon until training camp.

Doogie2K, Bure was a terrific offensive talent, but Lindros was arguably the best player of his day and dominated the league. He definitely gets in before Bure by all rights. If the HHOF makes decisions based on peak value over a period of time Lindros should be in.
ReplyDeleteThat said it's a crap shoot shoot this year, and as LT said, former Leafs get in for that fact alone and decisions aren't always based on merit.
If the Oilers do manage to pry away a 15th or in the range pick, and both Connolly and Tarasenko are available, who do you take? I see Tarasenko going to the Rangers though, but I'd take either of those guys over McIlrath at this point.
Black Dog - I don't begrudge Lindros as the old white guys that run the thing have it set up so he had very few options and he chose an unpopular one.

Bure doesn't have a cup because his teammates didn't win one for him while he was hanging out at the opponents blue line.
Yeah, the fact that the Hall has already welcomed in several "very good but not great" players makes it very difficult to keep out similar guys now.

I'll be sporting my Oil jersey and hoping to see a lot more. Hall or Seguin, I can't take it anymore, I will be happy with either one. I'm more interested in the other draft picks and transactions that we will make.

I'm still pondering options for Souray.... So Chicago built a great team but are soon to be in a world of hurt with salary cap issues now that the Kane and Toews contracts become much more expensive. Chicago built a great team but in doing so offered quite a number of troublesome contracts. Brian Campbell is a perfect example. They signed him for over $7MM/yr though the 15/16 season. With the emergence of Keith and Seabrook I see that Campbell really isn't filling the role that they had originally intended for him. Still a valuable player for them but worth the $7MM/yr?? So I think Campbell might be expendable to the Hawks. Might there be some sort of Souray for Campbell trade possibility. Wouldn't be a straight up trade obviously. We'd have to throw in a draft pick to make it palatable to them. But their cap issues and our considerable cap space would give us plenty of leverage. Any thoughts?

Personally, I like Souray for Campbell+. 4-5 of that 7 mil is dead salary, but, unlike a straight-up clunker, Brian's still got some tread left. I say Campbell+ because we'd need to take more salary back to make it worth it for CHI. Unless we're taking Huet too, I don't see any kind of a deal happening.

Jesse R, good points on our own ELC's and RFA's coming due in a few years. Campbell's contract would become as troublesome for us at that time as it is for Chicago right now. I thought of that right after I pressed the 'enter' key on my post. But then again, that might be leverage to use against Chicago in a deal. All that being said, this is exactly why I detest it whan GM's sign UFA contracts for more than 5 years. The long term impacts of those contracts are not worth the price.

I think Tallon did a damn fine job on that trade. Wideman has the makings of a stud young D man, and would have been solid straight up for Horton. To also get the 15th overall for a 3rd line centre is a good day's work.
I'm going to give the edge to Tallon here, good trade. Wideman is a solid top 2 d-man once he rebounds next season, and the 15th could possibly net Connolly or Tarasenko although I doubt either fall that low. (Unless Wideman steps into an elevator shaft, or Horton keeps up his scoring pace out of the bottom feeder division, both of which I doubt).
I don't rate Wideman well. At all.

The GM in Beantown is earning his money eh? The Kessel trade looks better by the second and now this.
I wonder how this impacts on Boston's position re: Hall? They have added a first line winger so in theory it reduces their need for Hall.
What is perhaps really good about this is that Renny has had a chance to learn the players before he had to step up and take on the roll.

He has long standing relationships with Oilers PR so won't be left out.
To my eye, Boston was clearing D-room to sign Boychuk prior to him going to market. They now have Ryder/Wheeler to offer up as there's no need for one or the other with Horton on the team. Boston's next move will be to send one of those two wingers out of town, is my guess.

Anyways, the Hall of Fame - another year passes, and the election committee continues to miss the damn boat with regards to the builders category: why the hell is Bill Hunter not "in" by this point? ReplyDeletePlek's deal expires after his age 33 season. I think it's a given he won't be 100 cents on the dollar, but he is durable, reliable, versatile. Not as good at moving the puck forward as a healthy Horc, mind you.
It's an interesting comparison, for sure.
I wouldn't pay Plekanec more than 2.5 million.

That contract is going to be laughable as early as next season.
I really liked OTC at the beggining. With the streak of wins, the outdated euphymisms, and his "one lug with two fancy-dans on a line" strategy, he seemed like some sort of old-timey genius.
ReplyDeleteBut JW, Quain, Tyler, and others had to keep reminding us about the unsustainable SH%'s. Vic had ominous words about Quinn's 1-2-3, 1-2-3, waltz style of line matching. Killjoys.
Pretty soon, the odds caught up with him, and the team started to show it's colors. OTC then lost the sphere. And not without cause.
Still, you have to love the guy's media personality. His press conferences weren't as interesting as MacT's, but they were funny and usually upbeat. He seemed like the exact kind of coach a losing team needs, for the players to relax, and the fans to laugh.

ReplyDeleteI think the most valuable thing that Quinn brought to the team (and the fans) was an awareness of how important COACHING is at the NHL level. You can't just send out the boys to play shinny. When MacT left, I felt he was 'overcoaching' and looked forward to a bit more relaxed approach (as I believe the team did as well), but Quinn woke us all up and made big 'C' coaching popular in the blogosphere and likely the dressing room again.

Given what we heard about Quinn and Reney throughout the season, I suspect that Quinn's 'advice' will be rather limited in nature. It will probably involve a lot of vacations and shuffleboard.

I heard the same thing and was asking around to see if I heard it right as well. Quinn did retract and say depending on who they take however.

Pierre Lebrun reporting the Hawks are asking for a prospect and a 1st rounder for Byfuglien. I can't believe they'd trade him - I'd think he's untouchable, right after Toews, Kane, Keith, and Sharp (and possibly Seabrook).
ReplyDeleteLosing him would (will?) be a monumental loss for the Hawks, though perhaps they're planning on slotting Kyle Beach in his place.
That said, I'd be happy to trade our #31 and Cogliano for him, but I'm not convinced that gets it done.

1. Glad for Dino. Loved his hockey cards as a kid just for the name.
ReplyDelete2. Ecstatic that Quinn is moving on up and out. He's just not the right coach for this team at this time.
3. On Renney: Silk scarf. All kidding aside I'm very happy he's taking the reins. He is the right coach for this team at this time.
4. The Boston trade looks to me like good value for both teams. It's a deep draft and a mid-round pick (15th) could be a Kabanov, Granlund, Forbert, McIlrath, etc. There's value in that pick that's being under-appreciated.
Mike Remmerde has also put his blog back to good use, taking a look at all the Dub's draft eligible players.
ReplyDeleteAs a shameless homer I had to look at his assessments of the Hitmen's 2010s, and I think they all line up reasonably well with my view from Row 5. Sylvester had a Pisanian playoff run (11G in the playoffs after 10G in the regular season) that could help him sneak up a round or two, while Beach did nothing to light my pants on fire despite his bloodlines.
Which means Edmonton will take him in the third round, because that's how they roll.
I realize Byfuglien is big, but his underlying numbers don't seem to suggest he is a huge difference maker. He was 17-17-34 on the Hawks which was 10th on the team. He had fairly tough zone starts comparatively, but seems to have played middle of the road competition with middle of the road help and had a poor relative Corsi. He was a -7 on a team that was +46.
ReplyDeleteI think Cogs for Buff makes sense to some degree as it is a swap for "size", but I think the Cup run probably has people overvaluing the big man.
If a team is doing a proper rebuild, you don't trade Eberle for Byfuglien. You just don't. You are trying to build a cluster around Gagner-to-Hall/Seguin.

Agree with Josh on Byfuglien and according to Sassone, Hawks beat guy, the core is Toews, Kane, Hossa, Keith and Seabrook. And they want to keep Sharp and Bolland.

That said, No way Buff is worth a 1st and a prospect. He hasn't really done much to warrant that much of a return. He's never scored 20 goals or 40 points.
He had a great playoff run. So did Pisani...don't over-react to a twenty five game stretch.
