Draft Week 2010 Post #6: Getting Busy

Things usually go a little crazy by Wednesday of draft week, so consider this a 'last Chance Texaco' reminder about some of the really important links to pay attention to leading up to Friday.

  • speeds is well along on his first round list and its interesting to see he likes Granlund and Gormley as much as I do, and his thoughts on Connolly are also worth reading.
  • YK Oil does brilliant work with the draft and has already been active this week. I find myself visiting his archives for each season's draft often during the season. Very interesting blog.
  • Flaming and Millard don't get near the respect they've earned but the truth is their reviews of last season's draft were the most worthwhile words devoted to the Oilers over those days in 2009.
  • Redline Report does their "draft chat with Kyle" over at USA today this morning at 11. If you can't make it, they archive it right away. Very insightful stuff available there.
  • Also today the HHOF announces their latest names. I hold out little hope for Mark Howe, a bit more for Eric Lindros and would be astounded if Doug Gilmour doesn't make the grade (he's a former Leaf, for crying out loud). Howe should have been in long ago, and Lindros should be in too.

It's a great week to be an Oiler fan, and those have been few and far between since 2006 summer. Enjoy.

  1. Whoa. I just read Dean and Guy's 1st overall prediction. All along i have thought that I'm OK with whomever we pick. Now i find myself nervous we might take Seguin without any compensation from Boston.

    ReplyDelete
  2. i'm looking forward to seeing who they pick at#1, and WHY they took him, but i'm also curious to see who we pick at #31 or whichever pick we get in a trade for #31.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Pavel Bure. I'd pick him before Lindros, I think, but maybe it's just because I saw more of him in my youth than I did Lindros.

    ReplyDelete
  4. it's a shame neither Bure or Lindros ever won a cup (to my knowledge).

    ReplyDelete
  5. ON a different note, what would it take to pry Coburn from teh Flyes now that they are trying to sign hamhuis? Trade for him and sign him to a multi year deal sets our defense for 4 years and allows our youth and any dmen we draft time to develop.

    ReplyDelete
  6. the Flyers should do a sign and trade, then he'd have to honour his new contract, only with us!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Pavel Bure was a one dimension player. (Hell of a dimension though)

Played for a sad sack franchise and deserves to toil in the unofficial Pretty Good Player Hall.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Thanks for driving the bus this far, LT. Your communicable enthusiasm is appreciated!

I'd sure like to feel as though the Oilers paradigm has, at least, got its turn signal on. Hopefully this draft will become the shoulder check.

    ReplyDelete
  9. We need to sign some teachers. Adam Oates...John Madden?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Hawks are in such cap hell there is reports they can't/won't qualify Andrew Ladd and are trying to shop him like mad.

The Oilers really should end up with a serviceable Hawk in the next week or so.

    ReplyDelete
  11. i would have no problem seeing Ladd or Versteeg here.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think the NHL Hall of Fame has already let in too many "very good" hockey players. I believe the Hall should be reserved for the top players of each generation. If that is the main requirement (and not simply the accumulation of stats due to longevity) then Lindros deserves to get in. And guys like Glenn Anderson and Clark Gillies are not worthy.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Ladd is a perfect addition to our team. Somehow get Ladd and Coburn and we are a better team right away with more depth and the core of our team is under 27

  17. Gospel, Jacques Lemaire and Cam Neely should not be in the hall of fame either.

    ReplyDelete
  18. If the HHOF were like Cooperstown then nobody would get in this year and the guys that everyone are referring to - Neely, Gillies, Anderson and so on would not be in.

    But its not.

After Jack Lemaire Anderson is the best of the lot, back in the day he was on a par with all of the non Gretzky guys on that Oilers' team.

Guys like Gillies, Lindros, Bure - I think I could take them or leave them even in the Hall as presently constituted.

And Dug have to disagree on Lindros. He had his shot at glory a few times and never got it done. Had a Finals appearance with the Flyers, was a featured player in '96 and '98 and nothing there either. Only time he ever won was as a supporting player in 91 and 02

I was never a big fan of that whole Lindros act.

    ReplyDelete
  19. You know what sucks. Its that after the draft we have a couple of more months of Tyler vs Taylor debate with no new news on the horizon until training camp.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Thanks for driving the bus this far, LT. Your communicable enthusiasm is appreciated!

Wait, do we have to walk now?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Doogie2K, Bure was a terrific offensive talent, but Lindros was arguably the best player of his day and dominated the league. He definitely gets in before Bure by all rights. If the HHOF makes decisions based on peak value over a period of time Lindros should be in.

That said it's a crap shoot shoot this year, and as LT said, former Leafs get in for that fact alone and decisions aren't always based on merit.

If the Oilers do manage to pry away a 15th or in the range pick, and both Connolly and Tarasenko are available, who do you take? I see Tarasenko going to the Rangers though, but I'd take either of those guys over McIlrath at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Black Dog - I don't begrudge Lindros as the old white guys that run the thing have it set up so he had very few options and he chose an unpopular one.

That being said, I also think Karma worked out appropriately for him in the end. Cups in Colorado because of his departure and no cup for him.

Bure doesn't have a cup because his teammates didn't win one for him while he was hanging out at the opponents blue line.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah, the fact that the Hall has already welcomed in several "very good but not great" players makes it very difficult to keep out similar guys now.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm going to be arriving in Vegas on Friday. Any other Oil fans going and anyone know of a place that would be a great spot to watch the draft from. I'll be sporting my Oil jersey and hoping to see a lot more. Hall or Seguin, I can't take it anymore, I will be happy with either one. I'm more interested in the other draft picks and transactions that we will make.

  27. Hall of Fame sucked early when the old Leaf boys got their buddies Dick Duff and Harvey Pulford inducted.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh good. Something new! A Hall coversation on an Oilers blog.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Argh! we have two Hall conversations going on this thread

    ReplyDelete
  30. Pavel Bure was one of the greatest pure goal scorers ever. He won the Rocket Richard on probably the most helpless team ever (2000-2001 Panthers).

If he hadn't stopped at 31 of age he probably would be with the big boys in the 600 club. That or just playing full seasons. Both him and Lindros deserve the Hall, being crippled by injuries should not be held account factoring how good of a player you were. `

Some guys in the Hall are just not even close to being as good as they were.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oilers Report just broke a Tambi presser (noon) that may be an Ass-GM announcement, as well as possible coaching changes.

Nothing that I can see on the Oilers main site the corroborates it, so this might be the scoop that validates this twitter feed.

    ReplyDelete
  32. From today's Sun:

New Jersey Devils’ scouting director David Conte put the Taylor Hall - Tyler Seguin draft debate into context almost all men could understand.

“Who do you like better, Angelina Jolie or Julia Roberts?,” Conte asked the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as draft day at the Staples Center in Los Angeles approaches. “It works for me, either way.”

I totally get it now. I can't stand Julia Roberts.

    ;o)

    ReplyDelete
  33. i'll take either one, it's what i've said from day 1. nice comparison though! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  34. “Who do you like better, Angelina Jolie or Julia Roberts?,”

On this blog, we know the answer to that question is Diane Lane!

    ReplyDelete
  35. OilersReport now speculating that Quinn's headed to Ass-GM, which would support their claim that Bucky's in for a promotion.

I know I probably shouldn't just be retweeting these guys onto LT's comment thread, but not seeing this coming from anywhere else and it's juuuicy.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Tencer Tweet...

Going to have to leave my golf game after 9 holes...sounds like the Oilers are going to make some news. Working on it...

    ReplyDelete
  37. I thought that other dude was going to be assitant GM?

Will Quinn be in charge of the OKC team or am I confusing my assistant GM's?

Maybe we will have an extra position to create a nice out for Quinn that is not a firing?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Maybe we'll have 3 Assistant GM's. Heh.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Bonner reportedly soured on the Ass-GM role due to it's focus on the AHL franchise.

I could see Quinn overseeing OKC... Or (shudder) Bucky, if OTC gets a cushy Bowman-esque gig.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Maybe we'll have 3 Assistant GM's. Heh.

Or 2 Assistants and 1 Associate.

    ReplyDelete
  41. ...and I am happy to anounce that Pat Quinn has been promoted to our new assistant GM of Onion Toating, Crustiness, and Cantankery.

On another note, we are happy to anounce that we have traded Nikolai Khabibulin to the Arizona State Correctional System in exchange for a bottle of signing regrets.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Per the Oilers' website, Taylor vs Tyler is Sunday Feb 27th in Edmonton.

    Schedule was released today. http://oilers.nhl.com/club/schedule.htm

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm still pondering options for Souray.... So Chicago built a great team but are soon to be in a world of hurt with salary cap issues now that the Kane and Toews contracts become much more expensive. Chicago built a great team but in doing so offered quite a number of troublesome contracts. Brian Campbell is a perfect example. They signed him for over $7MM/yr though the 15/16 season. With the emergence of Keith and Seabrook I see that Campbell really isn't filling the role that they had originally intended for him. Still a valuable player for them but worth the $7MM/yr?? So I think Campbell might be expendable to the Hawks. Might there be some sort of Souray for Campbell trade possibility. Wouldn't be a straight up trade obviously. We'd have to throw in a draft pick to make it palatable to them. But their cap issues and our considerable cap space would give us plenty of leverage. Any thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Brownlee on ON: The Tambellini availability at noon is just a chance to scrum him before the draft. I'm not expecting anything newsworthy.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Well Brownlee's a lot more reliable than this nameless Twit-feed.

But I hope he's wrong just for the sake of my boring workday.

    Frelbo:
Personally, I like Souray for Campbell+. 4-5 of that 7 mil is dead salary, but, unlike a straight-up clunker, Brian's still got some tread left. I say Campbell+ because we'd need to take more salary back to make it worth it for CHI. Unless we're taking Huet too, I don't see any kind of a deal happening.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Why would the Oilers want the headache of Campbell's contract?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Yeah, I would pass on Campbell for sure. That 7 million would really hurt in the summer of 2015 when our prospects' ELCs start coming due.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Quinn will be Assistant TO THE GM. Or the secret number 2 man.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Downright Fierce said...

The Oilers are always looking for Ass GMs. The guys they have now are totally ass, so might as well add another.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Campbell's deal has twice as much dead money in it for triple the duration of Souray's and we add the pick.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Who's spidey sense is better, Brownlees or Tencers....

Doubt that it's trade or buyout...sense that it's more than pre-draft avail. That leaves coaching staff or assistant gm...my guesses anyway. - Tencer

    ReplyDelete
  52. Jesse R, good points on our own ELC's and RFA's coming due in a few years. Campbell's contract would become as troublesome for us at that time as it is for Chicago right now. I thought of that right after I pressed the 'enter' key on my post. But then again, that might be leverage to use against Chicago in a deal. All that being said, this is exactly why I detest it whan GM's sign UFA contracts for more than 5 years. The long term impacts of those contracts are not worth the price.

    ReplyDelete
  53. That 7 million would really hurt in the summer of 2015 when our prospects' ELCs start coming due.

Didn't think of that, and it single-handedly outweighs the list of "positives" I was going to post...

  54. Anderson is easily one of the most clutch players in the history of hockey.

Now, 20 years after the fact, people who never saw him play dismiss him.

    Laughable.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Tencer tweeted that Oiler's PR "suggested" that he should be at the noon PC.

Quinn gets soft boot is my guess.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Tambellini announces he is still evaluating, but he is reall making the decisions now.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Anderson is easily one of the most clutch players in the history of hockey.

Is there really such a thing as 'Clutch', what do you think LT.

[I am kidding - the last thing we need is another 'clutch' debate.]

Speaking of which, who do you think is more clutch, Hall or Seguin?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Quinn gets soft boot is my guess.

The 'golden ass' istant GM job.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I just hope it has nothing to do with Jason Spezza.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm clutching my throat right now as I have taken rat poison. Come on Friday you can't be here soon enough.

Regardless of your belief in clutch or not Anderson was a phenomenal player, he gets discounted because he's a weirdo but he was absolutely great.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I'm clutching my throat right now as I have taken rat poison.

I've been there Black Dog. It always seems like a good idea at the time, but you learn your lesson after you do it a few times.

  62. Didn't ANA prepare for that possibility already with the Visnovsky trade?

    ReplyDelete
  63. spOiler... I'd say so.

Souray is going to Buffalo, New Jersey or SJS, I think.. with NYI being an outside possibility.

As for this... I think Quinn is only the head coach for another 22 minutes or so.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Poor ANA. Going from Pronger-Niedermayer, to Visnovsky-Souray is a kick in the balls.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Well I guess Boston doesn't need Hall anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hmm, Boston involved in a trade and the Oilers about to have a press conference...

    Anyone for a three way?

    ReplyDelete
  73. What's the line on the 15th being involved in the Horton trade?

    ReplyDelete
  74. Horton and Gregory Campbell for Dennis Wideman, 15th overall pick and another draft pick. Done. - Bob Mck

    ReplyDelete
  75. Damn, I was hoping Horton would make a good fit at 2RW alongside Gagner.

I wonder if Wheeler is going the other way... problem child for problem child.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Thx, Showerhead. Wow. I don't think we could've beat that offer. And Tallon begins to weave his magic by getting a quality 1st rounder.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Horton and Gregory Campbell for Dennis Wideman, 15th overall pick and another draft pick. Done.

    -per McKenzie

    OTC done.

    ReplyDelete
  78. The timing is crazy though eh? Oiler presser on the way? A little bit of pixie dust in exchange for 2OV and I would question the contents of yesterday's "Crown Royal" bottle.

    ReplyDelete
  79. OTC to management, Renney's the head coach.

    ReplyDelete
  80. OTC - Senior Hockey Advisor

Tambellini says that was always the plan, but accelerated 1 year due to how much they suck.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Gregory Campbell is a pretty good 3rd line centre. Just saying.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Gregory Campbell is a pretty good 3rd line centre.

...and our guys are rearranging the deck chairs.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Tom Renney In A Box

That was my first thought and I figure it would be nice to link for other folks who want to remember Lowetide's analysis. Also, I started by clicking "Renney" on the sidebar and found LT's predictions on hiring day to be awfully prescient.

    ReplyDelete
  84. My point was:

Is Gregory Campbell on his way to Edmonton?

    ReplyDelete
  85. Quinn new Ass-Lowe or Lowe new Ass-Quinn?

    Tamb. Is Ass to both.

Management may have too many Ass's.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Campbell's allright. I think his 2 goal season this year killed him tough .

    ReplyDelete
  87. WG, he did better than the Moreau, Brule, Chorney I would've offered (although I wouldn't have been asking for Campbell too). I imagine Tallon places a fair amount of value on the picks and he resolves a hole on D left by Seidenberg's departure.

    What's the other draft pick?

    ReplyDelete
  88. Boston has a lot of forwards now....

Also, happy happy joy joy that Quinn is not HC any more...

    ReplyDelete
  89. I'm a pretty good Oilers' fan, but not a very good hockey fan, so can somebody fill me in on whether Renney's any good developmentally, whether he line matches, and whether he's an improvement over Quinn in assorted other ways that the latter was ill-suited to this team?

    I'll miss his post-games.

    ReplyDelete
  90. If Renney takes over, does that mean we can finally hide the hobbits at even strength?

And if we thought MacT rode Horcoff into the ground, look out. I sense a re-unite of Horpensky to play PVP for 25 minutes per night.

    ReplyDelete
  91. godot - I know - I was just contrasting thew Oil's news with news that would actually involve the roster.

    Fingers crossed.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Brownlee on ON: The Tambellini availability at noon is just a chance to scrum him before the draft. I'm not expecting anything newsworthy.

    Buddy is really plugged in.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Also up today, Douchebag Cooke signs a 3-year extension with the Pittsburgh Crosby!'s.

Stoked on the Renney announcement. Very excited to see the Oil line matching again.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Renney line matches very well from his time in NYR... he hid Jagr like you wouldn't believe.

He had some kids develop pretty nicely under him there too... Dubinsky, Callahan, Staal...

    Tallon didn't get full value

I think Tallon did a damn fine job on that trade. Wideman has the makings of a stud young D man, and would have been solid straight up for Horton. To also get the 15th overall for a 3rd line centre is a good day's work.

I'm going to give the edge to Tallon here, good trade. Wideman is a solid top 2 d-man once he rebounds next season, and the 15th could possibly net Connolly or Tarasenko although I doubt either fall that low. (Unless Wideman steps into an elevator shaft, or Horton keeps up his scoring pace out of the bottom feeder division, both of which I doubt).

    ReplyDelete
  98. I don't rate Wideman well. At all.

And because of that I think FLA got absolutely worked...

    ReplyDelete
  99. Brownlee's a mere blogger now and the Oil are the oldest of the old school.

Yet he gets to sit at the press conferences and ask questions with his C.P. credentials even though 98% of what he writes is on Oiler's Nation.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I wonder how this decision took place...

Tambo: So Pat, I'm going with the youth movement, and I was wondering how you felt about--is that onions I smell?

Quinn: Yessirree there young feller. Onion belts were all the style back when I was a youth.

Tambo: Umm-er, okay then... so do you think you'll be able to communicate with our new younger players, y'know, on their terms, at their level?

Quinn: I'm not here just to do the downy, young fella. If them youths are costive they don't need cockering; they need a good clyster up the keister to embrocate their funk. There'll be no princesses wearing pinafores on my poop deck.

Tambo: But can you roll lines, protect the inexperienced from the other team's vaunt?

Quinn: Sure, but that's no way to become a player of ice hockey. Sink or swim that's how we separated the wheat from the chaff, the men from the boys down at the docks.

Tambo: You know, you're a really smart man Mr. Quinn... and you do have an onion belt. How would you like to be Senior Hockey Advisor to Mr. Katz and we'll let Old Tom worry about line-matching.

Quinn: I'm in! Can I wear the onion belt to the Big House?

    Tambo: Please do.

    ReplyDelete
  101. WG - do you think Brownlee's CP credentials got him a text from the Oil to make sure he did not miss the presser?

    ReplyDelete
  102. Wideman leaving Boston creates a need for an experienced defenseman in Beantown. Hmmm. We have one of those on the market....

    ReplyDelete
  103. Campbell is solid. Campbell and another pick or prospect along with the 2nd for the 1st?

    ReplyDelete
  104. Something based around Souray and Wheeler?

    ReplyDelete
  105. A tweet from Darren Dreger: "When Tallon got the job in Florida, he says Horton told him he wanted out. Florida now has 5 of the first 50 picks (3, 15, 33, 36, 50)"

Credit to the man - he's going to be throwing a lot of darts this weekend.

    ReplyDelete

  106. Also, happy happy joy joy that Quinn is not HC any more...

Agreed! Week one, I thought he was going to be a damn fine coach who threw off others with an old man act.

    Nope!

    ReplyDelete
  107. spOILer - Nice work! It probably went down just like that.

    ReplyDelete
  108. @ Woodguy
    Tallon didn't get full value.

    Wanna bet? :-)

The GM in Beantown is earning his money eh? The Kessel trade looks better by the second and now this.

I wonder how this impacts on Boston's position re: Hall? They have added a first line winger so in theory it reduces their need for Hall.

    ReplyDelete
  109. What is perhaps really good about this is that Renny has had a chance to learn the players before he had to step up and take on the roll.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Well, there goes the 15th pick trade with Boston (to grab MacIllgrunt)...maybe Edmonton wanted Horton instead, and the next trade will be Horton to Edmonton to lay off Hall?

I think I need to eat lunch, my brain is getting woozy...

    ReplyDelete
  111. Deano,

Its my understanding he wears CP credentials at the rink. (I asked him about it once)

He has long standing relationships with Oilers PR so won't be left out.

    ReplyDelete
  112. To my eye, Boston was clearing D-room to sign Boychuk prior to him going to market. They now have Ryder/Wheeler to offer up as there's no need for one or the other with Horton on the team. Boston's next move will be to send one of those two wingers out of town, is my guess.

    ReplyDelete
  113. WG, I'd assume nothing has changed with the situation we discussed earlier in the summer?

    ReplyDelete
  114. Dino into the Hall!

    Pleks re-signs in Montreal.

NHLPA votes to raise cap 5%... $59,000,000 or so.

    ReplyDelete
  115. And to somehow rid themselves of Thomas. Would anyone take Thomas, Wheeler and the 2nd for Bulin and the 1st? Saves them money and they get hall. We take on money but shore up the goalie and wing positon while still getting Seguin.

    ReplyDelete
  116. DBO:

I'd rather have Bulin than Thomas... I'm banking on some luck of being able to snake ourselves out of this contract.

Sure, if you don't count Chara, Seidenburg, Ference, Stuart as experienced defencemen.

I don't think the Bruins are in the market for overpriced injury prone D at the moment.

Anyways, the Hall of Fame - another year passes, and the election committee continues to miss the damn boat with regards to the builders category: why the hell is Bill Hunter not "in" by this point? Is there still a few dinosaurs hanging around that are bitter about the existence of the WHA? Because trying to deny its importance in terms of where the game is at today is, to say the least, foolish.

  124. Plekanec gets 30 million over 6 seasons from the Habs, as per Bob McKenzie.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I'd rather have Horcoff than Plek at their respective numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Anyone going to complain about how Quinn was fired?

    ReplyDelete
  127. Bookie,
Yeah - why can't I get fired like that?!

    ReplyDelete
  128. PDO: Interesting coment, actually.

Plek's deal expires after his age 33 season. I think it's a given he won't be 100 cents on the dollar, but he is durable, reliable, versatile. Not as good at moving the puck forward as a healthy Horc, mind you.

It's an interesting comparison, for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  129. I wouldn't pay Plekanec more than 2.5 million.

He's a 3rd line player that put up some numbers because he was the best option.

That contract is going to be laughable as early as next season.

    ReplyDelete
  130. I really liked OTC at the beggining. With the streak of wins, the outdated euphymisms, and his "one lug with two fancy-dans on a line" strategy, he seemed like some sort of old-timey genius.

But JW, Quain, Tyler, and others had to keep reminding us about the unsustainable SH%'s. Vic had ominous words about Quinn's 1-2-3, 1-2-3, waltz style of line matching. Killjoys.

Pretty soon, the odds caught up with him, and the team started to show it's colors. OTC then lost the sphere. And not without cause.

Still, you have to love the guy's media personality. His press conferences weren't as interesting as MacT's, but they were funny and usually upbeat. He seemed like the exact kind of coach a losing team needs, for the players to relax, and the fans to laugh.

  131. Plekanec gets 30 million over 6 seasons from the Habs, as per Bob McKenzie.

    Plekanec:
    Rel Corsi QC 6/12
    Rel Corsi QT 5/12
    Rel Corsi -2.2 10/12

    Scoring
    QC 4/12
    QT 4/12
    +/- ON/60 7/12 +0.05

Sooooooo, Horcoff is now on a value contract?

I think the most valuable thing that Quinn brought to the team (and the fans) was an awareness of how important COACHING is at the NHL level. You can't just send out the boys to play shinny. When MacT left, I felt he was 'overcoaching' and looked forward to a bit more relaxed approach (as I believe the team did as well), but Quinn woke us all up and made big 'C' coaching popular in the blogosphere and likely the dressing room again.

    Fired - with benefits!

  135. Given what we heard about Quinn and Reney throughout the season, I suspect that Quinn's 'advice' will be rather limited in nature. It will probably involve a lot of vacations and shuffleboard.

  136. Quinn Presser:

"Finally figured out that Band Aid fixes won't work on this team"

"Need to hold players more accountable for their performances"

"Offered an opportunity to stay, and I want to stay with these people and historic franchise"

"Didn't want to walk away from Oilers to look for another coaching job....loyalty"

    ReplyDelete
  137. "Band Aid fixes" sounds like a shot at management.

    ReplyDelete
  138. I'm happy as anything that Quinn coached the Oilers out of the MacT era.

Unfortunately Huddy left too, taking his defensive playbook out of town with him.

Tambellini gets a B+ today, and I'm a Quinn loyalist, lol.

    Since the lockout:

    Plekanec (5M UFA)
    385GM 103G 151A 254P .66P/GM

    Horcoff (3.6M RFA)(5.5M UFA)
    369GM 89G 174A 263P .71P/GM

You are consistent in hating tough minutes centers who pk and are in the 40-20 rank in points each year.

Oh OH OH you must hate Bolland, Zajac, and Kesler.

    Bolland: (3.375 rfa contract)
    160GM 29G 51A 80P .50P/GM
    Zajac: (3.9M RFA)
    326GM 76G 129A 205P .63P/GM
    Kesler: (5.0M RFA)
    374GM 88G 122A 200P .53P/GM

Or you will when they sign there ufa contracts.

  140. "He's made it very clear where we have to improve ourselves," said Renney. "I love that fact that Steve (Tambellini), as we discussed a year ago quite honestly, has continued to identify with this plan and kept true to that template, if you will."

Plan? Template? Please do share, Uncle Tom.

    ReplyDelete
  141. I hope Tambellini finds some time to change the players too.

    ReplyDelete
  142. I think they're going with a hybrid Chicago template: 3 forward skaters, 2 dmen and a goalie.
    Worked for those guys.

    ReplyDelete
  143. kris,

Tambellini is 100% focused on The Most Important Draft Pick in Oiler History. Don't distract him. Nothing else matters at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Alice,

I also like the way that Chicago put different players on the ice at different times. "Line changing" they called it. Very effective, because it keeps the players from getting to tired.

    ReplyDelete
  145. I love that fact that Steve (Tambellini), as we discussed a year ago quite honestly, has continued to identify with this plan...

Does that make any sense on its own? I don't think so.

Good riddance to Quinn. He sucked.

  146. I think "going forward" has now surpased "at the end of the day" as my most hated tag line.

Did Quinn just leak Edmonton's pick? WTR to rookies coming in- 'I've worked with 3 of them. Well.. one of them isn't drafted yet.'

For those who don't remember, Quinn coached Taylor Hall at the U18s.

Its all part of the plan to get Toronto's pick next year from Boston.

    ReplyDelete
  149. I heard the same thing and was asking around to see if I heard it right as well. Quinn did retract and say depending on who they take however.

If the Oilers get the Leafs first next year and its just a ploy, its genius ;)

  150. Next fight in Oiler land.

    Renney vs. Bucky.

I hear Renney doesn't want him and he's Vish's boy.

This will really show how much influence Vish still has.

    Let the hilarity ensue.

Perhaps a "promotion" for Bucky down to the farm?

    ReplyDelete
  151. 'I've worked with 3 of them. Well.. one of them isn't drafted yet

If we assume that one was Hall, who's the third guy aside from Eberle?

Oh, and congratulations to one of the best female hockey players in Cammy Granato. Well deserved that she should be among the first inducted.

    ReplyDelete
  152. A Hall-side leak - if that's what it was- is not a problem. The other way could have put a wrench in it, if there were plans to use the lever.

    ReplyDelete
  153. kinda glad the quinn coaching era was short lived. i know this year was an injury and tambellini plagued season but his only output was 30th place.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Perhaps a "promotion" for Bucky down to the farm?

...and I would like to announce Kelly Buchburger as Vice Deputy to the Senior Hockey Advisor. Meanwhile Kevin Lowe will shift to Viceroy while I, Steve Tambellini will become President of Hockey Operations and Craig Mactavish will move to the Puppet GM position...

    ReplyDelete
  155. Pierre Lebrun reporting the Hawks are asking for a prospect and a 1st rounder for Byfuglien. I can't believe they'd trade him - I'd think he's untouchable, right after Toews, Kane, Keith, and Sharp (and possibly Seabrook).

Losing him would (will?) be a monumental loss for the Hawks, though perhaps they're planning on slotting Kyle Beach in his place.

That said, I'd be happy to trade our #31 and Cogliano for him, but I'm not convinced that gets it done.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Shaft19:

That'd be a sweetheart deal for us and I'd be happy to see Cogs land in CHI. Lemme just savour that idea before someone slaps its taste out of my mouth with an explanation of why it can't/won't happen.

    ReplyDelete
  157. I'd think Eberle and Nash/31st would do it though.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Any move that further waters down Lowe's impact on the team is welcome.

Good news to hear Pat Quinn's staying.

    ReplyDelete
  159. 1. Glad for Dino. Loved his hockey cards as a kid just for the name.

    2. Ecstatic that Quinn is moving on up and out. He's just not the right coach for this team at this time.

    3. On Renney: Silk scarf. All kidding aside I'm very happy he's taking the reins. He is the right coach for this team at this time.

    4. The Boston trade looks to me like good value for both teams. It's a deep draft and a mid-round pick (15th) could be a Kabanov, Granlund, Forbert, McIlrath, etc. There's value in that pick that's being under-appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Mike Remmerde has also put his blog back to good use, taking a look at all the Dub's draft eligible players.

As a shameless homer I had to look at his assessments of the Hitmen's 2010s, and I think they all line up reasonably well with my view from Row 5. Sylvester had a Pisanian playoff run (11G in the playoffs after 10G in the regular season) that could help him sneak up a round or two, while Beach did nothing to light my pants on fire despite his bloodlines.

Which means Edmonton will take him in the third round, because that's how they roll.

    ReplyDelete
  161. I realize Byfuglien is big, but his underlying numbers don't seem to suggest he is a huge difference maker. He was 17-17-34 on the Hawks which was 10th on the team. He had fairly tough zone starts comparatively, but seems to have played middle of the road competition with middle of the road help and had a poor relative Corsi. He was a -7 on a team that was +46.

I think Cogs for Buff makes sense to some degree as it is a swap for "size", but I think the Cup run probably has people overvaluing the big man.

    ReplyDelete
  162. If a team is doing a proper rebuild, you don't trade Eberle for Byfuglien. You just don't. You are trying to build a cluster around Gagner-to-Hall/Seguin.

Byfuglien will be unrestricted way to soon, whereas you still have 7 years of Eberte.

    Nothing against Byfuglien.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Agree with Josh on Byfuglien and according to Sassone, Hawks beat guy, the core is Toews, Kane, Hossa, Keith and Seabrook. And they want to keep Sharp and Bolland.

Byfuglien is the right choice to make - sell high.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Now that the Bruins have Horton, they don't have to move on Hall.

    ReplyDelete
  165. To Josh:

Keep in mind that his coach was moving him back and forth from winger to defense. BUT....

That said, No way Buff is worth a 1st and a prospect. He hasn't really done much to warrant that much of a return. He's never scored 20 goals or 40 points.

He had a great playoff run. So did Pisani...don't over-react to a twenty five game stretch.

    PASS
