The Rangers?

That's Vic Hadfield of the NY Rangers with Gary Bergman (and Floyd Smith) in pursuit for the Detroit Wheels. Hadfield came to the Rangers via the Intra-League draft in 1961. However, the blueshirts didn't learn from the experience (Hadfield was a big part of the Rangers for over a decade) because throughout their history the club pursues name brands with little regard for the future.

I think there's a deal to be made between the Oilers and Rangers this summer. The two teams have done lots of business before and will likely do so again (I'm hoping it is in the next three months). Glen Sather is still in charge (despite some crazy eyebrows and even crazier transactions) and the Oilers have some people he'd be interested in (specifically Sheldon Souray).

New York has some cap issues, but those things may fade quickly. According to this article, Olli Jokinen may be headed for the KHL. Jokinen is a UFA this summer, so the club has 5.2M free and clear to begin shopping for a replacement or another big ticket item to address needs elsewhere on the roster. The Rangers have some nice items on their roster and Edmonton has welcomed many NYR draft picks and prospects over the years. Notables include Doug Weight, Todd Marchant and several others acquired by Sather when he was Oilers GM.

Is it too much to dream? Sather helping another Oiler rebuild? Well, he's been doing wonky stuff for awhile now and the Rangers never did learn the lesson of Vic Hadfield.

Souray for Rozsival is lateral at best. If Souray plays 82 games we lose the trade and if Souray only plays 40 games will still lose the trade because Rozsival is a waste of money.

  2. Well, I don't have any faith in the Oilers doing shit for the next 2-3 seasons anyway, so maybe when Rozsival comes here and you all realise what I've been trying to tell, namely that he's useless, I'll get some online money or something.

Callaghan of course, I'll take in a second.

    ReplyDelete
  3. And Souray was such a good use of money this year... or his first year here....

I'd deal them straight up for each other just to save the $400k and get a defenseman who can actually play an entire season.

If you can somehow convince Sather to include Cogliano and Dubinsky into the deal, you're laughing all the way home to the bank.

  4. Somehow Messier for Bernie Nicholls never quite resonates as one example of the Rangers "helping" the Oilers either.

  5. However, the Doug Weight deal was a beauty.

  6. I don't like or want Roszival. From a hockey and contract standpoint, I'd prefer Souray, even considering injury history. But we've pretty much got to get rid of Souray, and I suspect that all of our alternatives will involve even bigger boat anchors.

  7. Anyone else scared we deal him for Redden+?

I mean, presumably, that plus would have to be ridiculously mammoth... but.... still...

    ReplyDelete
  8. (Redden has a cap hit of 6.5 for the next 4 seasons, and is owed $23,000,000 over that time)

    ReplyDelete
  9. Can eating some of a players' salary still be included in a deal? Could NYR conceivably offer up Redden?

    No.

  11. Are we looking at the wrong NY?

    Would the Islanders be interested?

They have more cap space than pretty much any team in the league and also like shiny things.

  12. C'mon Olli, you'll at least be a nice plan C or D for someone.

  13. Good bye Ollie. Too bad all the divisions weren't as soft as the Anemic SE for ya! Don't let the door hit you on the way to the K.

I don't care who takes Souray either. NYR would be nice and their are pieces that could be had, but he would be better off in Oil silks.

  14. God with the divisions comments.

They only play a quarter of theyr schedule in the division dammit.

  15. 6'3, 212 lbs Evgeny Grachev had only a so-so year at the AHL level (only 19, mind you) and he might be trade fodder. Also, Uncle Glen has so many names to keep track of on the blueline that one or might slip his mind.

Grachev, Bob Sanguinetti and the rights to Ryan McDonagh (their problem NCAA child) for a smurfy forward or two and our problem college child? Cogliano and O'Sullivan might hold some interest.

  16. I think he goes to Dallas. They only have 8.7 million committed on defense next year and 35.7 million total. They've been in need for a PP guy since Zubov left and Souray should also fill a void that's been missing since Hatcher departed.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I only say it 'cause its true. You take player out of the SE they stink, you put them in and they have a career rejeuvenation (a la Reasoner or Afinogenov).

  18. God with the divisions comments.

That wasn't God, it was Bar Qu.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Who-guay?

    How about Bouwmeester?

I forget the post, but Willis analysed it to death. SE sucks.

    Sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yeah i know it sucks, just that it doesn't make entirely a player. Olli Jokinen can still play hockey, even if it isn't 1st line level.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Joke is far too one dimensional, and that is in large part because he was never asked to become more than a soft minute muncher in Florida... despite not being all that good at munching soft minutes.

Dallas is interesting, but the Ribeiro rumors scare me shitless... I'd take pretty much any LW they have though.

    ReplyDelete
  22. If they bring Redden's insane contract to Edmonton, I will cut my 30 year relationship with this team..........I think. (please no, please no)

    ReplyDelete
  23. What about Souray for Rolston? He's had 32 and 37 points the last two seasons and Jersey wants him gone as bad as Edmonton wants Souray gone. He has 2 years left at 5.0 per.

Is that as bad as Rozsival?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Trak:

Probably worse, given the over 35 rule.

Without CII though, I haven't seen Rolston or Roszival play much any time recently.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Rolston outscored against slightly better than average competition with slightly better than average teammates last year. He's big and can win faceoffs. He's aging, but has been pretty healthy most of his career.

He's a ripoff at $5 million, but so's Rozsival, even though it crowds up centre a bit (my solution is to trade Brule, but I think I'm in the minority there).

    ReplyDelete
  26. Sorry, that should have read "I think I'd prefer Rolston of the two, even though it crowds up centre a bit".

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think the bottom line is, no more boneheaded plays by the management, because a lot of the fans are starting to get pretty fed up with this dog and pony act.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I was hoping the Oilers would acquire Rolston a couple years ago as a UFA but Jersey got him first.
He's scored enough goals in Rexall Place, you might as well put an Oilers jersey on him.

  29. Yeesh, there's some good Canadian stories in this year's playoffs, and round 1 was great, but the last few nights have had some of the worst hockey I've seen since the lockout. I thought the Montreal-Pittsburgh game was bad but Philly-Boston was just awful.

It took awhile but the trap-masters (Julien, Martin) have found a way to lock things up or maybe its a letup in the obstruction calls. I hope its the latter and the league can crack back down because for a half dozen years in the 90's I nearly gave the sport up.

If you take the emotion out of it, how has the hockey been out west? I'm in NS and haven't seen those late games.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Knightown: Yeah i know it's boring. But it's not like the Habs have a very big choice. Can't ask them to have a suicide strategy.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anyone remember when the Oilers had a hockey team that wasn't awful, and every time we went to Vancouver we'd horribly out play them, but Vancouver would score on the 4 chances they would get, one of which was almost always a 5 on 3 that was shady at best, and we would lose the game?

This playoff game is like watching that in reverse... :-).

  32. more than anything, Slats likes shiny things. He is going to bed dreaming of Kovalchuk. All he needs is some cap space.

If we can move Souray and Ethan, send POS and Nilson to Oklahoma, we have the cap space for him. Slats has the #10 draft pick and we might find another MPS there.

Slats tells Drury that it is Edmonton or the AHL. Maybe something like Chorney for Drury and the 1st.

Another option might be Drury, Brashear, and the 1st for Souray. This gets Slats 3 mill closer to Ilya. If he flips Souray for a mid round draft picks, he has enough to Ilya and another shiny thing.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I can't see the Oilers trading Souray without bringing an equally bad contract back as part of the deal. If he goes to LA (could we get Greene back?), we'll probably have to take Handzus. If he goes to the Devils, I could see Zubrus coming back. Dallas is having ownership problems, I can't see them taking Souray's contract on.

If it's the Rangers, and we're going to take on a horrible contact, I'd rather it was Drury over Roszival or Redden (even tho' there's a much bigger cap hit, he can at least provide leadership the younger players coming up). O'Sullivan, Moreau or Nilsson would need to be added to make the deal even a little palatable from from the cap standpoint. We'd then throw in a mid-level prospect or maybe JDD (they need a backup) and get Girardi as well (Rangers have a lot of young defencemen and Girardi's been spinning his wheels for 2 years - he could be part of a decent 2nd pairing).

It isn't much of a return, and admittedly it certainly doesn't help our cap problems, but at least we add a guy to the room who knows what it takes to win.

Whatever contract we have to take back in a Souray deal, we're likely going to end up with the highest paid checking line in history.

  34. I've thought for years that the day would come when Sather would make a sweetheart deal with the Oilers that would baffle the hockey world and then at the press conference he takes off his suit jack and shirt and underneath is an Oiler shirt.

The Lowe and Katz come out and they all celebrate.

    ReplyDelete
  35. what about cogs and the 31st to NYR for their 1st rounder (#10). i'm not really sure what the recent history has been like for buying a 10th overall pick.

but, you can market the kids speed just like you would a big slapper. you give slats a fairly cheap contract as well. might be someone to replace prospals money and place in the lineup.

it's not the salary shed, but i tend to agree with trak that souray is going out west.

souray, redden and drury as your "pick ticket items" would be just a brutal situation.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Rolston is something we need but at nowhere near that age or price.

Dallas is dumping salary. While everyone has been pointing at the hole left on their D after the expiration of Zubov, they have done as much to fill the D hole as the Oilers have done filling the Centre hole.

Dallas is for sale. They might be late-comers to all the parties.

As far as the Rangers go, I too, am terrified that all Slats is offering back right now is Redden. That's a far worse scenario than Roszival showing up.

NJ might want to hire a coach before making any trades.

Souray is not going to be easy to deal.

  37. Several defensemen have to make a decision. The Lidstroms, Gonchars, Niedermayers, Blakes, Footes, Aucoins, and O'Donnells of this world. If most of them hang it up in one summer, that could affect the demand for Dmen. Big If though.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Would anyone take Drury off Slats for Souray, if they sweetened the deal with a guy like Sanguinetti? He looks like the kind of stud we need at the back end. Stick Drury on the LW and he fills a hole on the 3rd line.

  39. OT :: i'm a seguin guy but found this small recap of the OHL playoff run for "thick toe"

"Forward Taylor Hall led the OHL with 35 points in 19 playoff games and had 13 multi-point games in the post-season. He also finished second in the OHL with a +17 plus-minus rating, third in the OHL with 17 goals and tied for third in the league with 18 assists. Hall posted a league high 16 game point streak in the post-season."

  40. At this point if the Oilers take Seguin over 2 time memorial cup finalist Hall they're out of their depth as hockey minds...something many fans already suspect is patently correct.

Hope is about (h)all I've got left as a fan of this moribund small market franchise, that's pissed away it's legacy and then pissed on the city and fans who paid their wages for the past how many years.

Seguin looks like a real good player, but Hall looks more and more like a great player. Of course with these bozos and muppets, you can imagine them talking themselves out of doing any simple decision, because suckers - always can be counted on to be just that - suckers.

Are there not quite a few pro scouts and agencies who also have Seguin first - I think LT does as well.

Do those guys also fit in the class of 'suckers'?

Are there not going to be enough Tyler/Taylor posts to discu

    ReplyDelete
  42. bookie: Hunter is "framing the issue" with "internet aggression." Taylor Hall and Tyler Seguin ran side by side during the regular season, and Hall has indeed been impressive in the playoffs but you can't punish Seguin just because he ran out of railroad track.

Arguing over the top pick is pure lunacy. A reasonable man or woman would read the information, make a decision and then sit back content in the knowledge that:

    1. Stu is good at what he does
    2. There isn't a bad choice between the two.

The future holds injury and all sorts of maladies, but you can't fault a man for not being able to read the future.

It looks to me as though Seguin is the better bet based on all kinds of items that I've expressed previously. If someone chooses to call me a "sucker" I reserve the right to assume it is a reflection of them instead of a correct assessment of me or the conversation at hand.

    :-)

  43. Lowetide:

No one is a sucker for wanting Seguin - it's just that trade down for Pouliot, trade picks for Nash, draft a Niniimaki, screw up every offensive prospect's nature for a trap first mentality, offer sheets to anyone regardless of losing up to 4 first round picks, publicly offering to go down on Heatley, drafting Kelly with the fans screaming for Doan, insane overpays to pluggers like Moreau, making Moreau the captain of an NHL team...the list could go on and on - tends to make, putting it mildly some fans a wee bit nervous.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Internet Agression. I like it. It sounds like a disorder of some sort.

    ReplyDelete
  45. There is no way the Rangers could have Souray, Redden and Rosival on D. We'd have to take one of them back and we're lateral at best. Move Souray for cap space (ie prospect and pick if you can) or make him play. I'm all for moving him but his value has to be all-time low. After the Pronger trade, maybe the hockey gods will show us some compassion.

    ReplyDelete
  46. People! Some of you want Drury. Drury will not come to Edmonton. If you do a little research on his time with the Flames you would stop suggesting this. It's ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The big question for me between Hall/Seguin is thinking 3 years down the road.

With Horc/Hemmer/Penner likely all gone, which kid would we rather have on the first line?

I like what Hall could do in that instance (and who wouldn't want a potential 40-goal scorer) but for me Seguin's the better pick, and a player like him would be much harder to acquire on the trade/free agent market.

Look at Ryan Smyth, which for me is a pretty good template for Hall. How many times has he been traded the last few years?

Best case for Hall is a Ryan Nash, who can't move the team up to another echelon by himself in Columbus, no matter how many goals he scores.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hehe...Is it funny that your name is Rick and you still typed out "Ryan Nash"?

I agree with you on the winger issue. They can only do so much, it seems. My real concern is that I just really haven't seen enough of Seguin to say "Yes. He is the guy.".

I'm still hoping for Seguin but Hall will be very welcome here as well.
