This is Stan Weir. Stan called me the other night, and man is he pissed. Stan feels the Oilers are a laughing stock and he is displeased to say the least. The last time we spent a prolonged period with Stan it was 2006 spring and honestly he enjoyed himself. He's secretly been hoping for a return trip to the finals (or semifinals, or quarterfinals, or frankly the playoffs. Close to the playoffs. Somewhere on the same page. In the neighbourhood. In the race. In the race through Christmas. Win 2-in-a-row. Have more than 3 defenseman on the roster at a given time) but it is not going to happen. Again. Stan feels the management needs to lay off the fugazi and cut out fubar completely.
The AHL Falcons are also on the way to ending their season (thankfully) and there are some noxious fumes coming from that part of Oil Country too. A few recent stat lines:
- Jeff Petry is -11 in his last four games. His totals by game (-4, -2, -2, -3) must be close to a record for a 4-game period and I really wonder if this organization just throws the new hires into the deep end (facing the toughest competition). Either way, Petry is 7gp, 0-2-2 -10 to start his pro career. Taylor Chorney went 7gp, 0-3-3 -5 to begin his AHL career.
- Jordan Eberle is 10gp, 4-7-11 -5 this season in Springfield. It is very similar to his stint with the Falcons a year ago, except he's scoring more at EV (3 goals) this year.
- Chris Vande Velde got a point last night, making him 2gp, 0-1-1 +1 so far in his pro debut this weekend.
The Falcons play again this afternoon to wrap up their schedule. We'll be looking at the Falcons in-depth during the spring, but I really wonder how many of the Oilers prospects will move from Springfield to Okla City. A guy like Slava Trukhno is three seasons into his pro career and if he's developing the math can't see it. Colin McDonald was -25 and Ryan O'Marra a sprightly -19, Geoff Paukovich has done little to distinguish himself and Bryan Lerg is 23 and can't get into the lineup most nights. And that's just the forwards!
If we can agree that this organization needs to bottom out before they can move forward, then today is a good day to reach rock bottom. Oilers are in 30th, the Falcons are calling in Mayflower movers to get the hell out of Dodge, and a bunch of those 50 contracts won't be back next season. Send in the Clowns, don't bother they're here.
Part of the process is admitting that you have a problem too, is it not? I guess that by finally starting the purge at the deadline that Tambellini is admitting that its a disaster. People can talk about injuries and bad luck and all of that but you don't trade away half of your D if you think you are just a player or two away or you'll be in the mix next season.
ReplyDeleteShould be an interesting summer. I guess we'll see a lot of guys shown the door, the ones that we expect plus probably a lot that we do not. When you're the worst organization in professional hockey you can pretty well justify burning it to the ground.
But hey, what a season though eh?!?!

The lasting image of this season has to be "The Shift" played by Struds and Chroney against the Wings a few weeks ago. They've broken it down every way possible over at C&B and it never gets tired. Every fucking Red Wing played against them before they hada chance to make a change.
ReplyDeleteLast year, for me, I blamed coaching for not being able to get the best of a decently talented bunch of individuals so I got my wish. In the end, it always was about having real NHL players.
Jason Strudwick is a decent #7 guy, if you are playing in a league where only players with the initials JS are allowed to play. And Taylor Chorney is the guy I'd go after in my Rec league if I picked up a turnover at center ice and had a 1-on-2. That 53 year old playing left defense has poise, even if he is wearing an XL7 and Cooper-Alls. And really, its not an insult to Taylor as, coming off the right wing, as a right shot, I have my toe drag method to get to the net. I still haven't discovered a way to get to the net from left wing. So its mostly that.

ReplyDeleteThe D corp yesterday in Springfield was JF David, Motin, Jake Taylor, Eddie Del Grosso, Ryan Donald and Petry. So a bunch of guys on try outs, a vet, and 2 propects. Taylor (the most experienced) was in the sinbin for 13 minutes. Bryan Pitton let in 7 goals in 40 minutes on 26 shots. That makes it tough on everyone's +/-
With better health they would have some combo of Arsene, Nickerson, Plante, Peckham, and Chorney ahead of Petry.
As far as the 50 contracts for next year, I am guessing that Lerg (6pt in 35G), Trukhno (25pt in 72G), Hrabal, Paukovich, Nickerson and one of O'Mara or MacDonald will be gone. If they can clear a few contracts off the major league team (Souray?Comrie?) they could have 8 openings.
It's been rather nice to avoid playoff hockey for the last four years. I've been able to devote time and effort into my university finals instead.

ReplyDeleteSpringfield record with DD is 13 17 2 and with all the other goalies is 11 34 2. One is a team that is fighting for playoff spot and the other is a laughing stock. Particularly if you subract Levasseur's numbers and he isn't even Oiler property.
The last 5 games are a good window on the trend particularly as it relates to Eberly, Petry, VDV, and the other recent arrivals

Oponents - 148 shots and 27 goals
Tough to emerge from that unscathed in +/-

ReplyDeleteI'd agree with you. Kid has a lot of skill and scored a "Marek Malik" through the legger in a shoot out this year.
Problem is he is finding success in a disciplined system that rewards hard work. This is not what the Edmonton Oilers are about.

ReplyDeleteWhy not sign inexpensive RFA's from teams that can not afford to match? Chicago is a perfect example since they already spent $57.5 million on 14 players for the upcoming season.
Defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson is a large 22 year old Swedish RFA presently earning "almost" league minimum. He plays more than 19 minutes per game while being on the second penalty killing unit. He might sign a four year contract averaging $2 million per season.
That offer would only cost us a 2nd round pick in 2011; a pick that would not be guaranteed to get us a solid NHL player. So why not take the sure thing?
With Whitney / Gilbert / Souray / Smid already in our top four, Hjalmarsson adds solid depth while the kids gain more experience in the AHL.
If injuries occur, we are covered. If the Oilers are in danger of missing the playoffs next season, Souray becomes trade-able; leaving us with a top four all under the age of 28 with all having 3+ years of NHL experience.
Since it will be two years before MPS / Eberle / 2010 first round pick are ready to make an impact in the playoffs, why not plan accordingly?

ReplyDeleteHow about trading Cogliano for James Sheppard? Both having career worst years in their third year in the league. Drafted 9th overall in 2006, Sheppard is 6'2, 200+, born in '88, but was brought up too early by Minnesota. He had 19 points in his rookie year
ReplyDelete(at age 19), 24 points last year - but a dismal 6 points this year. Scouting report says he has good hands and a good shot to go along with a solid frame. Obviously 6 points is pathetic, but Peter Mueller wasn't doing much better in Phoenix, and he started dominating when he got traded to Colorado. Same goes for the Pouliot - Latendresse swap.
How about Cogliano for Sheppard and a 3rd round pick?

ReplyDeleteThe top 7 D, assuming we can sign one of the UFAs mentioned by others here, seems solid. It wouldnt be terrible if we got rid of 44, because of his money, but I can still see him coming back a man possessed next year, like he did the year after his shoulder injury. with Smid and a UFA in the 3/4 spots, Souray playing with Peckham 5on5, and gunning on the PP, could make for a nicely balanced D roster.
The real challenge is the same as it was last year, clearing out the clutter at forward, and we all know how that went. 19 imo would have to be bought out, he has just been a trainwreck the last two years, and hopefully 18 is tradeable after his decent finish to this season. I wouldnt mind keeping 12 around for injuries to skill guys, and trading 13 like some suggest seems ridiculously narrow minded. After that, signing a strong centre and a winger with some size and brains are the obvious priorities, but that of course does not mean it will get done.

I haven't seen any of Petry's play in the AHL so far, but it's worth noting that, surprisingly, the Falcons team he plays for is somehow much weaker than the one Chorney played for. Much, much, much, much worse.
ReplyDeleteChorney's team still had goaltending (Dubnyk), some decent AHL scorers (Linglet, Minard), and the defense core had fewer lesser lights.
Still a pretty bad stretch though. I wouldn't be concerned, at least not until the cesspool that is our AHL affiliate is cleaned out and rebuilt, as you suggest.

ReplyDeleteRoy's performance in three games is a nice surprise. There have been some reports (from non-Oiler sources) that Roy had a very good regular season in the QMJHL. It would be nice for this franchise to pull a diamond from the rough with a goaltending prospect, after spending high picks on our last two.
Traktor - true enough they look pretty good when Gilbert and Whitney are out there, the problem is with the second pairing.
ReplyDeletegorewell is right, as always some of the issues are pretty fixable; add a solid stay at home type who can play in the top four and then you have Smid or Souray in your bottom pairing. Add a vet to play there as well and the D looks ok.
Of course on paper they looked ok this fall too. They were supposed to be the strength.

ReplyDeleteNotice Cogliano's point totals each year, going from 45, to 38, to 27. I'm not suggesting it'll keep going that way, but a small player who can't play defence who doesn't really have a particular skill other than his speed isn't the most valuable guy.
I wouldn't compare Sheppard to O'Marra - Sheppard made the NHL at 19. He's played 224 NHL games while O'Marra has played 3. Sheppard reminds me of another current Oiler - Gilbert Brule. Both came up at 19, played just well enough early to stay with the club, and then gradually regressed as they saw their roles decreased.
Brule turned it around nicely this year in the 4th year of pro hockey at age 22. Sheppard will be in his 4th year next year as well. By all means, if we can get Sheppard for less than Cogliano, lets do it. There's no risk to the move if it's as easy as you suggest. I like the fact that he's young, has size and skill, and is supremely undervalued right now.
Though based on the statistics, Sheppard currently looks hopeless, some players have shown an ability to turn it around in new settings. Latendresse had 3 points in 23 games this year with Montreal, and then ripped it up with Minnesota (25 goals in 55 games). Mueller had 17 points in 54 games in Phoenix, and then 20 points in 15 games with Colorado. Though limited, these cases show that talented young players can turn their games around if given the opportunity in a fresh environment.
Maybe there's even hope for Nilsson and O'Sullivan on new teams, since I don't think anyone is willing to give them the chance to show it here. Cogliano deserves another shot since he's ended the year well, though I really don't see a place for him long-term unless he can develop a defensive conscience and either adapt to the wing or become a better face-off man.
PJ Oil: Take 2 extra strength advil to get ahead of the pain a little and then gargle with salt water. Seriously. It tends to make things better for awhile.

Oilers need to get a tough stay-at-home Dman back in the Souray trade, and then sign two more.
If they go into next year without adding at least two actual NHL Dmen, it will be another long year. Smid is not durable and his numbers away from 71 were not good.
Hope Doobie gets the start. I'm convinced that ADD got the Colorado start because he was presented with the Molson Cup for March pre-game and it looks better if he was on the ice when they bring the trophy out.
I really hope this is the last I see of 43 in an Oiler uniform. 41 can come back, but only if he learns how to play D during the next two years in the AHL.

Here's to the worst Oilers season I can remember. Worse even than the bad old days of squandered draft picks, Pocklington threatening to move the team, selling or trading some fine players, and Shane Corson with the C. This team is best defined by the swaggering incompetence of the front office; we won't have hit rock bottom until the aforementioned clowns are shown the door.

It looked like he lost the handle on the puck to me. He was coming in pretty fast. Don't really understand his approach at all. If he's trying to go five hole he would need to come in wider and with less speed. Coming in fast usually indicates to me it's either going to be a shot or a deke involving a change from forehand to backhand or vice-versa. Then again I'm no expert by any means. It just seemed to me like he lost control on it.

Gaborik was flying all game and played over 20 and had two good chances I thought.

He does the same thing where he circles around the faceoff circle in his own zone to build up speed, and once he gets the whistle he's off to the races. The key to his deke is to get the goalie moving at speed, and he typically tries to slip it through the 5-hole.

2) Charles Linglet might be the worst player I've ever seen at the NHL level. He can't do anything. At all.
Sadly? O'Sullivan is quickly becoming a close second...I can't imagine how we're going to trade that foppish weakling to anyone without pictures of some team's GM naked with a hamster and duct tape.
Linglet's actually got some good things going for him at the AHL level. He's got some good size and hands along the boards and in front of the net.

After watching the last 2 west coast games I think DD can be described as a big goalie who plays big - while JDD is a big goalie who plays way too small. Add in JDDs spastic technique and he's too inconsistent to ever rely on. Trade him if you can as an add-on to a bigger deal or just send him down to OKC after TC - doesn't much matter either way - he's totally replaceable a little cost.

I'd keep Potulny if the price was right; unfortunately, I don't think it will be. Better to sell him high, if anybody will offer anything decent.
ReplyDeleteJones looks like acceptable fourth-line material, and Johnson like acceptable seventh defenseman material; I'd be okay with keeping either/both on cheap contracts in those roles.
Other than that, I agree with that list.
I am listening to 630 Ched post game to see if Rod is retiring...... did not realize Dan Tencer is a MUCH MUCH MUCH WORSE than Gene Principe. Would not have believed that possible. I never listen to the post game show because he is SO bad but Tencer is absolutely brutal

Traktor: Care to comment on Shawn Horcoff's 16 points and +2 over the last 22 games while you're at it? He turned it on very nicely the last quarter of the season (see what NOT having to drag around POS and JFJ does for a guy?). I figured you, if anyone, would have been all over this.
ReplyDeleteNeither Horcoff or Cogliano's performance compares to that of one Tom Gilbert, however - in the last 21 games, 77 scored 20 points and put up a +3 while being on Quinn's blueline pairing of choice for tough matchups with one Ryan Whitney.

ReplyDeleteIt's called cherry-picking, and Traktor is a master of it. Facts are facts, and Gagner is still tracking well ahead of Cogliano, despite being two years younger.
It's the reason that 13 is potential trade bait this summer (one of he or Brule is going to be used as a chip, I'm almost positive of it), while 89 is a huge piece of the long-term equation going forward. And that's how it should be.
Why is everyone raving about the GREAT job the Oil have done over the last 15 games....... that surge has happened after many of the teams fell out of contention......empty wins, meaningless points, plus/minus, etc when it truly does not matter
ReplyDeleteI'm not adverse to trading Cogliano at all. However, we should realize he played on the 4th line with pluggers for a large majority of the first half of the year. Neither is playing with guys like Moreau/Pisani going to generate offense.
ReplyDeleteHe succeeded when playing with Gagner/Nilsson and most recently Penner/Potulny.
Unless you can get sufficient return on him (i.e. Souray + Cogliano for Dubinsky/Rozival), it would probably be prudent to lock him up 3 years at a ~1.5-1.6M cap hit as he's likely to outperform that type of contract.

ReplyDeleteThe sad thing is that what Souray said about the management is absolutely true; these guys are the absolute rock bottom of the entire hockey world. Their decision making process ranges from throwing hail marys on a good day to outright idiocy on a bad one.
It is truly mind blowing to me how any of these guys still have jobs.
It's interesting to think of Souray's comments about being rushed into the lineup. Sort of casts a different light on the time of Pitkanen as an Oiler, and Stoll's season lost due to a concussion after being rushed into the lineup.

ReplyDeleteHorcoff, since the Olympic break, is scoring a lot of points playing with Moreau against tough opposition.
MacT had Cogliano playing with Moreau most of last year.
Penner makes everyone look good. Brule and Cogliano look horrible when they aren't playing with Penner. Cogliano's problem is that he wants to be a centre, and he can't win a faceoff, or check worth a damn, and Gagner is a better small centre. Brule can play wing, and brings a physical element, and had a better year.
The Oilers won't give him away, but Cogliano should certainley be traded in the next 18 months.

ReplyDeleteBut I don't understand his beef with Tambellini. Tambellini wasn't around when Souray signed, and didn't Spector have an article last year already that Souray had requested a trade. Why would Tambellini feel compelled to go to the hospital bedside of a guy who had requested a trade, particularly when Souray himself had made that trade impossible by breaking his hand in a fight with Iginla.

It appears that years of binge drinking have begun to dull my once formidable memory so all I can recall is that it was a game at Rexall; I don't remember the opponent. The overall point though is this has happened for years.
On the stretch offensive totals: how much can we make of this? I know that with 10 doing all this while dragging around Ethan "Bernie" Moreau perhaps he'll be positively Sedinian for the 2011 season!
On the last game: I thought it was a fitting way to end the year. I just watched the first period but in the first three min I saw the slot being unattended three times and I hope someone else noticed the way Quinn dropped his head after the second goal because it reminded me of how defeated my father would look after I repeated the same mistake over and over again or disappointed him.

Of course, they reviewed the initial "crossbar" and our goal didn't count and that was pretty much that.

It's Ales Hemsky coming back in a 4-0 game after getting creamed in the face by Tootoo.
It's Ryan Smyth coming back early from a broken ankle.

Same old same old for the gerbils who manage the Oilers - how many players have to say the same thing? How much goes unsaid about how pathetic mgmt team is. How much more does the owner have to see before it become obvious he's as dull as the guys he has under salary to manage the team. A suitably pathetic ending to a pathetic season for a once proud franchise. Don't expect anything to get better unless the mgmt suite is purged. Lowe, Tambo, Pendergast etc are a complete joke around the league and no one with s shred of sense will sign here until they are flushed.
