This poor fellow is Cy Denneny. He is wearing an Ottawa Senators NHL jersey and no doubt paid full price for that haircut.Grooming aside he was a helluva player. Cy Denneny (whose brother Corb-lord didn't they have any of those GOOD BABY NAMES books at Safeway back then?-also played in the show) was the scoring leader in 1924.
He wasn't fast, but had a very hard shot and experimented with a curved stick (much like another LW with a plus shot did in the mid-60s). He was the top goal scorer in the history of the Ottawa Senators (247 goals) when he retired.
He was born in a town that was swept away by a flood (Farrow's Point), he starred for a franchise that was swept away by commerce, and he helped bring the Stanley to Ottawa a long, long time ago. He was elected to the HHOF in 1959. He was 5-7, 168. I have also seen his name in print as Dennenay. Cy Denneny died in 1970.
Ottawa is a city of 860,000 people. The motto of Ottawa is "advance".
Ottawa's hockey team is pretty damn good. I can watch and enjoy them despite Bob Cole's inability to know ANY of the player's names, his irritating tendency to say OTTAWA! OTTAWA! OTTAWA! during play-by-play instead of naming the players involved in the action. Ottawa fans don't mind that stuff, but do get their noses out of joint when Cole says "OTTAWA SENS".
I like the Ottawa Senators. I hope they win the Stanley Cup. Back in 2000 when I first discovered Hockey's Future I chanced upon three wonderful people from Ottawa (Hossa-Sean Keough, Yokel-Gilles and Kyle's Mom-Never got her name) who shared my passion for hockey and also had several hours a week to blather on to strangers.
For Hossa, Yokel, and Kyle's Mom, for Dave Archibald and Lonnie Loach, and for Cy and Corb Denneny, bless you boys and bring home Stanley for one more summer.
"Advance" on what? Our wallets?
ReplyDeleteOttawa does not = the federal government.
ReplyDeleteI'll fight you, Art! ;)
Ottawa/Gatineau is over a million bucks btw.
bucks? people, I'm dumb.
ReplyDeleteGO SENS
Go you Ottawas!
ReplyDeleteHow about a post about the Silver Seven and One Eyed Frank McGee, LT?
No sport has such a collection of colourful characters and great stories.
Kooky Canadians!
LT, did you go to high school with Cy? Kidding, kidding. Just sounds like you saw them play, driving to the rink in your velocipede.
ReplyDeleteI lived in Ottawa in '94-'95 when the Senators were truly wretched in a way Oilers fans cannot imagine, and while I can't cheer for other teams, I won't be gutted if they win like I will if Pronger does a lap with the chalice (and does unspeakable things to it in the privacy of his own home).
