I've been obsessed with the NHL draft since about 1970. My interest in Oilers drafts goes back to maybe 1974 (I do remember being happy they drafted Mike Rogers, who was a pretty famous junior based on Hockey News coverage).I've learned over the years that some of these guys who have zero pedigree end up being actual NHL players. A recent Oiler example would be Fernando Pisani who passed safely through college without one thread at Hockey's Future being devoted to him and then went under the radar as a pro until he arrived in Edmonton as a finished product.
Could this happen to Glenn Fisher? Hell if I know. He is a hometown boy trying to make good (played for the Edmonton Maple Leaf Athletic Club and then in the AJHL for Ft Saskatchewan) and judging by his ever improving GAA and SP maybe he will (a good comparable for Fisher's stats career would be the WKRP episode where Johnny Fever's reaction time gets better as he drinks more alcohol).
Here's a neat little interview from his college website (Denver):
If you could be one superstar athlete in any sport, who would you be? Why?
Wayne Gretzky. He influenced the game of hockey by setting over 60 records that still stand today and he still influences the game today.
If you could be on one of the reality television shows, which one would it be? Why?
The Amazing Race. It looks like a lot of fun and I'd love the competition between the teams.
If you could play another collegiate sport, which one would you play? Why?
Football, because of the size of their stadiums and the amount of attendance. It would just generate an amazing atmosphere.
If you had to say today what you will be doing five years from now, what would it be? Why?
Playing for my hometown NHL team the Edmonton Oilers. It has always been a dream of mine to play for them.
What would you name your first-born child? Why?
Glenn Jr., it's just such a great name.
If you were featured on the front of a magazine, what magazine would it be? Why?
GQ, so I could follow in the footsteps of the almighty pretty boy Seth Appert.
If you were stranded on a deserted island and had three things with you other than the clothes on your back, what are they? Why?
Food, a TV, and the NHL center ice package.
How would your teammates describe your style of play?
I guess they would say I'm an athletic, butterfly-type goaltender.
What was your favorite cartoon as a kid? Why?
I was always a Flintstones and a Jetsons fan. We were always forced to watch them at lunch time in elementary school.
What is your favorite number? Why?
28 is my favorite number. In juniors it was the only number left on the goalie jersey I had to wear, and I guess it grew on me after that year because of the success I had from wearing it.
Always liked Seth Appert, especially when he was with the Tijuana Brass (I am SO sorry). :-)
Sensible signing - we will have a slot open in Stockton with DD moving on and want to keep our relationship with that franchise solid. Where he goes from there - who knows - but he's a solid ECHL signing. Anyone else wish we could have Stockton as our AHL franchise? Honestly I don't know why a number of the western team just don't band together and move their AHL affiliates out west.
ReplyDeleteAsia: The old WHL was a great league (never saw it, but have read tons on it). The league had tremendous franchises in places like San Diego, Portland, San Fransisco as well as cities now in the NHL (LA, Vancouver, San Jose is kind of Oakland).
ReplyDeleteIt makes complete sense, and in fact with the IHL now several years dead I wouldn't be the least surprised to see an upstart league at some point.
And of course I still believe in a Double A for hockey.
It tempers one's enthusiasm a bit by seeing that his backup posted a nearly identical SV%, GAA, and winning percentage. Still, it will be interesting to compare his performance in Stockton next year to Dubnyk's performance this past year.

ReplyDeleteClassic episode.
On a one year contract it can't hurt to see how he handles the pro game. You can never have too many prospects in the org. It was embarrasing to see the Oilers run out of pro D-men last season.
ReplyDeleteLowetide, great blog and I have the same passion for the draft that you do! Being a huge draft nut, I decided to start a blog nhldraftbuzz.blogspot.com. I have a few posts up, but have much more on the way. Would you like to swap links? Have a nice day in Oil country!
